Can Sony Beat Microsoft With a PS4 NEO Launch Later This Year

Sony are in a difficult position here no way can they compete against the Scorpio with their rumored specs of the neo. The positives Sony has are the games,cheaper console and the year head start if they can keep producing great games then they should do well.

The Scorpio if it's priced right will sell very well due to it being the most powerful console ever and thats what people want like everything in life big house fast car etc.

Now all Microsoft has to do is keep the games coming show what the Scorpio is capable of and it really needs some Scorpio only exclusives not on pc platform then they should do well.

TBH Microsoft already lost with the X1. They knew this and that's why announced Scorpio because they lost the X1 to the PS4. They just decided to move on to the next Gen and wash their hands of the x1

Sales don't dictate the best console either. The Wii beat both the PS3 and 360 last gen, was it the best console or the best selling? The PS4 is definitely the best console for Playstation gamers, it is also the best selling. These two things alone should be enough to please Playstation fans. For Xbox and PC gamers, the PS4 is far from the best or "beating" anything since it isn't relevant to anyone other than Playstation fans.

Define "lost". Sony lost quite a bit of marketshare last gen to Microsoft and Nintendo. When you look at the regions/countries the Playstatioin and Xbox are available, I'm not sure why some fans think Microsoft is trying to outsell Sony. Sony will most likely outsell Microsoft with a less powerful console. I think that is a given. The question I have is why do feel that makes Playstation the best? People that own an Xbox bought the console they feel is best just like people that buy a Playstation think they bought the best console. Why do you feel someone has to be wrong?

MS is resetting with Scorpio because 2013 won't rub off X1. Its like a permanent marker that kinda rubs off, but can never fully wash off the mark. And some of the reason is because is lagging behind PS4 but I think the nightmare of 3 years ago is there to stay on the current Xbox.

Now a days power is more of a factor than in the past. The X1 and PS4 have basically the same architecture. The PS4 was just stronger and cheaper. Had the X1 been stronger than the PS4, that console wouldn't have been the run away hit it's been so far. The sales would've been much more even. Microsoft killed themselves by having a weaker and more expensive console at launch. They've been on the back foot ever since.

Anyway, people generally pay much more attention to specs these days. It's the world we live in now.

Scorpio is part of this gen just as Neo is. They are both mid-gen upgrades that will play the same games as the lower-powered XB1 and PS4, but with enhanced visuals and/or framerates. Neither the Neo nor Scorpio will have exclusives the PS4 and XB1 don't.

The other difference is that Scorpio is able to play VR and the other Xbox's will not. That looks like a next gen feature to me. Both Ps4 versions will run VR. Not to mention, the way they didn't even showcase how the system will look gives you the new gen feel.

1. The power increase of Scorpio is almost the same as the power increase of the X1 from the X360.
2. This gen is suppose to be shorter than last gen 8 years. The industry was expecting 2018 reveal and 2019 launch for the 9th gen.

Scorpio is not a mid gen upgrade. MS are just pacifying you xbox fans that already bought an X1 with the idea that it is one.

Fact is MS just want to start fresh with a new console as everything they have done to try an compete with the PS4 for the first 2 years (Kenitc removal, Price drop, 5 game bundle, Power of the cloud marketing BS, DX12 marketing BS, X360 BC, Greatest lineup in history including Halo 5, PC multi-plat) didn't make a dent. What is worse is that this at the time when the PS4 still has not hit its stride until this year starting with U4.

Announcing a new console is really their only card left this gen and thats the card they have played.

I don't know about that. With Neo, Scorpio and gaming PCs all with healthy user bases I think developers will find it worthwhile to push the visuals in games much more. Yes, the games will still have to scale down to the capabilities of the PS4 and XB1, but there is still a lot you can do to push the visuals to much higher levels on the more powerful platforms.

You are in denial if you think the ps5 is going to be out anytime soon what I think Sonys plan is if the neo comes out this October that's 3 years until the original ps4 came out so realistically the ps5 will be out in 3 years after the neo so this generation will be 6 to 7 years long with a mid gen upgrade. We are looking at a 2019 to 2020 release date for the ps5 so that gives the more powerful Scorpio 2 to 3 years on the market being the most powerful console.

Everytime a company release a new console it cost billions of $ Sony said when they was going to put 4gb of memory in the ps4 but then changed it to 8gb at the last minute that one decision cost roughy a 1 billion dollars so they are taking a massive risk yes the ps4 is successful and it's paid off for Sony but they cannot release consoles like that they haven't got the money to gamble like Microsoft.

Sony is in no way in a difficult position. They have the momentum, the sales which are ridiculously outpacing the competition and lets not forget the software variety that regardless of how powerful the Scorpio is will keep their fans gaming on the Sony platform. Lets not forget that the Ps3 multiplats were in the first years inferior to Xbox360 and Ps3 was hundreds more yet when the Ps3 laucnhed almost every single month they outsold the xbox 360 world wide. Sony is not in that position anymore (actually in a better one) and are leading and stealing the show.

Two things can potentially happen 1) it releases earlier and of course will be inferior to a console coming out a year or so later (common sense) but that wont hinder their sales but will only cement them and keep the sales moving forward (i will be traiding in my ps4 for a Neo) or 2) they didnt announce the specs at E3 because they said lets hold up and wait it out since we are in the lead and Microsoft jumped the gun and we can now come out with beefier specs to be comparable to Scorpio. Its bs when ppl say that Sony cant beef up the specs now because the system is in production lol says who? From what we gather most devs were caught off guard when Neo was announced formally few weeks ago meaning none of them ever had dev kits. Either way the latter still works out for Sony because they'll still continue with strong sales and gamers will be provided with an even stronger system.

I dont see anything difficult with Sonys position, if anything they are the ones who dictate when and how. They are pushing Microsofts hand which is why they jumped an announced a new console only in name but nothing tangible.

Either way as a gamer who loves hardware as much as software (love my vita to death!!!!) i am excited and am very happy with the competitive nature of both companies. I am happy Scorpio was announced bcus itll sit really nice right along my Neo and PSVR.

Sony is happily sitting at 40mil plus and Neo will surely be Cheaper then Scorpio.. Also it will have a one year ahead advantage over Scorpio.. Why? It lowered it's price, had promotions that gave games away and yet it did not slow down the momentum of the PS4 at all. So I don't see how a much more powerful Xbox (with a higher price I might add) would persuade those who did not buy an Xbox One to begin with.

If it was Releasing in Sony's. PS3 & PC it was not a Sony console exclusive it was Multiplatform..i do not have to buy it on a PS3 I can play it on a PC and play the game with better visuals. To boot.

Fast forward to this cycle..whats changed? It's still the same, The argument used against console exclusives when the game releases on PC 💻. Also means.

For Microsoft if the game releases on both Xbox & PC it counts as a Microsoft exclusive.

Sony did this back in the PS2 cycle..3rd year, Sony released. The 👉 PSX👈 it had a 320GB hard drive, DVR functionality too and was for HD TV's at the time.

PS3 cycle..Sony starts selling PS3's and promoting the Blu-Ray video play back feature in A/V Hometheatre Sections of stores. I mean for petes sake Sony was selling the PS3 in Home depot..😂

Hopefully the PS5 does have around that Tflop count. Though 4.1 Tflops is plenty for 1080p gaming. A GTX 970 is perfect for 1080p gaming and that's around 4.1 tflops IIRC.

The better question, when has Sony even lost to MS this gen? They've won in sales, they've won in quantity of games, they've won in quality of games, and they're the ones that seem to have a prolonged plan for exclusive games, i.e. not just keep releasing rushed sequels to dying franchises, and occasionally showing off something somewhat new and interesting thats only going to prove to be a niche title in the long run. As far as Neo is concerned, everything is rumors and hearsay; nothing official. They let MS play their hand at E3, and now they're adjusting their fires. I'm curious to see how this all plays out. Rumor has it the Neo is set to launch this fall but theres no way Sony is going to let MS have a far superior console specs wise out in the market. Problem is its going to be hard to pull the plug if the NEO is set to launch this fall and they cant just release a stronger console a year or two later. I don't think the console market works like that, it'd be hard to get ppl to upgrade every other year. Sonys kind of stuck, they need to make the NEO very affordable now, since Scorpio is more powerful they need to make it attractive in other aspects. Its going to have a year Headstart so you gotta get the hype train rolling for this thing so that by the time Scorpio drops, NEO has a firm lead.

Beat? one of the strongest point of the PS4 sucess is its price. During the launch at e3 sony executive were all crazy when microsoft annouced the Xbox at 499... when the PS4 was 399. The rest is videogaming history. Breaking record after record month after month. So Sony is really afraid of an expensive console that is coming late 2017?

The most expensive console will never beat the other cheaper and with the sony logo. By the time the Scorpio is out the PS4 will be like 60 or more millions, because they got more 18 months until the launch... in terms of software they will sell millions and millions games.

Microsoft must launch the console at 399 and i dont believe they can without huges losses. It will be even worse if Sony does a «preemptive attack» and before the launch of Microsoft scorpio cuts the price of the PS4 and the Neo....

This is a new direction, never really done in such a way as its being done right now, who knows what's going to happen, Sonys winning on console numbers right now but MS has this whole Win10 platform thing going which will increase game sales, that's good for business.
This is a new era of console timelines and I think Sony and MS are trying to drive the market forward in their own way and I love it.

ok all the sudden power isn't that big of a deal I'm sorry but thats just hypocrisy. we all know a good chunk of ps4 users chose a ps4 because it was price cheaper and it had better specs than the xbox1. they didn't go ps4 because they were sony loyalist, MS knows this so it decided to fight sony with what made ps4 popular at launch power. leading up the launch everyone believed ps4 had 50% more power than xbox1 except for those who really keep their feet on the ground. till this day there isn't much of a difference in power between the two not enough to say 50% but still that becomes the first argument.

MS put sony in a tough spot if rumors are true that neo is or was slated for a 2016 release because it let those users knows hey we have this console thats gonna have better hardware than that. not everyone that owns a ps4 is a sony loyalist they just chose the console who had the better specs and would run 3rd party better. MS knows most of its xbox owners will buy a scorpio eventually because at this point most who have a xbox1 like what Microsoft offers to them. at this point the scorpio is aimed at those ps4 consumers that were swayed by sony with the power of ps4.

if neo does launch this year with the rumor specs it will still sale but not at the rate the ps4 sold, because it would have the scorpio looming over it . the whole power argument comes back scopio will be the leading 3rd party console just because it would all look better on it. now sony can easily swallow the loss on the neo if in fact it has already been to production delay it back to drawing board do what they must to match scorpio and release it . now sony can release the neo still this year and then try to release another console 2017/18 but that would just kill the fans. they would be screwing them over by giving them a inferior console and then 2 years later try to sell them a better one. sony could also try to 1Up ms but with no price they could be stuck with a strong console at a lucrative price. the scorpio won't be cheap neither

I know Microsoft felt like they cheated you a couple years ago but since hiring Phil Spencer they've done some pretty cool things with the XB1. They can beat them to market, but the PS4 Neo absolutely won't beat the Scorpio's hardware specs. There's no possible way simply because AMD doesn't have the tech (7th Generation APUs and Summit Ridge Zen CPUs) ready just yet.

So essentially Sony is going to offer a console that fits between the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio that supports 1080p to 4K upscaling, 1080p 60FPS in future PS4 games (older games may get this support but it'll be up to the developers to patch it in), 4K UHD Blu ray playback, and it'll play all existing PS4 games at the regular resolution/ frame rate.

The advantage that Sony has at this point is time. It can beat Microsoft to the market a full year, thus providing a massive influx of games--but they won't be in "true 4K", just upscaled. Even still they will do full 1080p 60FPS.

But Sony also has to convince people to upgrade, which could be tough. I'm also concerned the Neo's rumored upjumped Jaguar CPU will bottleneck with the new Polaris GPU.

Plus the Xbox One S will likely be cheaper than the Neo--one of the main selling points of these 4K consoles is 4K UHD Blu ray playback because UHD players are super expensive at the moment. So it all depends on price and being able to not only SELL the console, but being able to explain the console in a clear, concise and transparent manner.
