A writer for Warp Zoned, and longtime fan of Resident Evil, describes his experience with the RE7 teaser demo. Does it feel like a valid part of the series?

"More than that, it lacked anything resembling a Resident Evil experience. Capcom had been touting a return to the roots of the series in the months leading up to this reveal, but they don’t seem to have any idea what made fans love the series in the first place. This was a horror game, with nothing to differentiate it from the other titles inspired by P.T. It lacked the crucial survival element necessary for a true survival horror game, and in the absence of that… it just wasn’t fun"

Couldn't have said it better

NovusTerminus2864d ago

Yeah, it just seemed like another P.T knockoff trying to fill the void. Capcom is so far beyond out of touch with the RE community now, and it shows so very well right now.

Resident Evil, even in it's first game was a story based action horror. This demo has a decent mood, but lacks story and action, very disappointing to me, I also do not think they should have went with a first person game.

With it being a first person VR game, with that release date it seems like Capcom is trying to be the first horror game (or close to it at least.) with PSVR support.

-Foxtrot2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

It's just so obvious that's what I hate

"Gee do you think we should make RE7 like the RE Remake but with modern controls to make this game play smoother. I mean the success of the re-released RE Remake proves it's still popular"

"Nah screw that lets jump on the P.T hype train, copy it and ride the success off someone elses idea"

The only reason I've seen for people defending the game is because it's "horror"...that' s all, it doesn't mean shit to them that it has nothing to do with RE and that it's basically a dumbed down version of P.T they just seem to be so sick of the horrible action route Capcom have taken that because it's horror it's automatically a good thing.

At the end of the day it's not survival horror and it's not in the same survival horror vain as the old games. Limited saves, no automatic saves, limited ammo, limited health, dangerous enemies, tough bosses, a map you need to unlock piece by piece by solving puzzles...you know things which made up the Resident Evil games. Yet because it just has "horror" element to it people suddenly forget about the rest of content which makes Resident Evil the franchise it's suppose to be.

Watch the Live Cast Interview and feel ashamed.

NovusTerminus2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

@Errorist76
I watched it, and I already knew all of that... It's all a first person game to chase after what KojiPro did with P.T back in 2014, which is when this game started development...

poison_shadow2864d ago

I won't lie, part of me is glad that it is at least in the horror genre... but that's meaningless when it doesn't resemble Resident Evil in the slightest.

If this was a VR spin-off, and not a numbered title with one of Capcom's main dev teams attached to it, it would be forgivable. We could at least assume a true numbered entry was in the works. Now, the best we can hope for is that the Revelations series continues...

Lonnie182864d ago

I thought it was rather fun, Capcom is heading in the right direction!

-Foxtrot2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

Not really. They are heading in the wrong direction.

They basically went from the right direction (RE1-3) to a different but alight direction (RE4) and then a wrong direction (RE5-6) to another wrong direction (RE7).

DarkOcelet2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

Well, u do realize that it will have combat though. Besides ,you guys are missing the point here of what the demo represents.

Multiple Endings Ala First Resident Evil trilogy

Amazing Atmosphere Ala First Resident Evil Trilogy

A freakin Mansion this time and the scope is not big like RE6 which works so well in a Resident Evil game

Mysterious story which might actually be good this time since it was seriously crap in the latest iterations

Puzzles and hidden elements just like the first Resident Evil game, if you remember in RE1, after u kill (YAWN) the Big Snake the second time, there is a hole where u drop down, and if you wait there as Jill instead of just moving forward, Barry comes back and this changes elements in the game. There were elements like that in the demo.

This is definitely a huge step in the right direction, the only thing that might be putting me off is the first person but if it makes it more immersive then am up for it. And there will be weapons in the game, this is not a walking Simulator btw.

And as a person who has been with Resident Evil since its first iteration, i gotta to say i have never been this excited for a Resident Evil game before. Maybe this change is what the game really needs to be awesome again.

-Foxtrot2864d ago

Well some of those points haven't been really confirmed fully or we don't know how they'll play out. Remember Capcom with RE5 and RE6. "Oh we are going back to the franchises roots" or "This game will be like the old ones because of X, Y and Z" yet look what happened. I take what they say no with a grain of salt and it makes sense after being burnt twice.

The way I see this...

It's not the right direction...it's just a better direction COMPARED to the wrong direction they were going in with RE5 and RE6

So basically you are comparing this new direction to a slightly worse direction and when that happens obviously the direction you have now seems better...HOWEVER this better direction doesn't mean it's the right direction. Get what I mean?

Better does not mean right. People just think it is because it's better then what we previously had.

It's like FF13, first one was a bad FF game but the sequel came out and was much better. However the sequel was still pretty bad it just seemed better because it was better then the slightly worse one. Was a step in a better direction but still wasn't the right one.

That's what is happening he...it's like an illusion. You compare something to something worse and the thing you have now seems more amazing then it actually is. However if you compare it to the Resident Evil Remake it's worse and you can see things more clearly.

Errorist762864d ago

How about you guys just watch the Sony Live Cast in which they tell everybody this is just an intro to the real game?!

-Foxtrot2864d ago

But it still sets up what we'll be getting in the main game

That's the whole point of a demo to show you what the game is going to be like. It may not relate to the main game but the gameplay and mechanics do.

if Capcom not show logo i don't think this is resident evil game.
but hey capcom said demo not part main game (just show how the gameplay is going to work) and actual game will have more RE element.

HarrisonMode2864d ago

This is a 17 minute demo of an experience within the game...it's Resident Evil enough for me at the moment and I've been with it since the beginning when it was called BioHazard in Japan - willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Exploration, zombies, finding keys...that's all very Resident Evil btw...just because it doesn't looking like RE4 a lot of people are complaining...wow, that was an entirely new direction and worked beautifully.

Hold_It2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

Yeah, a lot of people said the same thing about 4, got really mad and had a knee jerk reaction and said this isn't Resident Evil, and 4 became one of the best selling ones and best game in the series for a lot of people. I think the same thing will happen again with this one. People need to go out of their way to research things, we have the internet where you can punch in any question and get a result in a search engine. This has existed since the invention of DSL connection in 2000+. I expect disagrees, but I really don't care as people need to watch this whole video and understand what this "demo" actually is. Yes, it is going to be first person, but people need to understand that THIS IS NOT THE FINAL GAME.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

For people like Foxtrot who don't understand what is going on here. Watch and learn ^

sdcard4gb2864d ago

Exactly RE4 was something entirely different, yet this RE7 seems to adopt what's currently done by every single horror developer (well, unless we are talking Tango Gameworks).
I am so fed up with First-Person walking simulators watching RE BECOME one of them is making my blood boil. I don't want this, this is supposed to be Resident Evil, not Condemned: Criminal P.T Amnesia.

Skankinruby2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

While it is definitely an odd direction for the series I'll gladly take some genuine horror back into this series over the garbage from the last few entries. People wanting a genuine sequel with all the survival elements in it have a right to be upset however this at least seems to be adding some flare to a completely stale franchise and I'll go ahead and hold on to my optimism with this one.

What, I thought this was dead after Shawn Layden left Sony. I would definitely pick this up if it's true. I have such great memories of playing the MediEvil games on PS1 and I played the PS4 remake. Such a great and underrated series.

Cacabunga9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

A rumored game at a rumored show.. we’ve seen it all

TiredGamer9h ago

Agreed. The first remake was stylistically beautiful and a very noticeable improvement over the original in every regard. And it was reasonably priced and sustainably developed (i.e. not some mega big budget game that was do or die for the developer).

Zeke6811h ago

Thanks for the spoilers... :(

RonnySins11h ago

Another day, another remake. Ugh!

SonyStyled10h ago

If you played the original print I can see your annoyance. I didn’t and probably a lot others the past 20 years.

Was it any good? Would you suggest playing the original print of 2, or suggest the remake? Just wondering because I didn’t play the originals as I had an n64 at the time

TiredGamer9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I played the first remake and absolutely loved it. The quality of life and control improvements were very noticeable. I tried playing the PS1 original and gave up halfway through at the janky controls.

Expect the same for part 2. The PS1 version is janky as heck, but I would gobble up an improved remake day one.

The beauty of this kind of stuff is that I find myself enjoying more retro gaming today, so a relatively low budget classic remake (call it a single-A release) is exactly what is missing from first party releases in the modern age. I don’t want every game to be an unsustainable AAAA endeavor that is just overwhelming in every regard. Truly miss when game releases could be modest-sized surprises and still be commercially successful/viable.

Bring on more quality classic remakes!

DarXyde2h ago

I can see your frustration and mostly agree, but modern remakes of games lost eras ago are fine if you ask me.

I don't know how old you are, but I was a kid when the first Medievil came out. It's really for a new generation of gamers more than anything and the industry is at a point now where there is an insane number of current gamers who missed out on those classics.

If we're talking about remakes of The Last of Us or remasters of GTAV, I'm in agreement. Otherwise, the choice to remake games like Final Fantasy VII, Medievil, Parappa, etc. are fair to me. Even PS2 era games being remade would be welcome to me. Often, the tech updates make it worth it.

Knightofelemia11h ago

Such a good series I also wish Sony would dust off Wild Arms and Legend of Dargoon even the Legend series needs to see the light again.

Omegasyde9h ago

My bets on new Socom and/or Wolverine (since Deadpool 3 is dropping in the summer).

I think one after this state of play will be PS5 pro preorder

InUrFoxHole5h ago

SOCOM! SOCOM! SOCOM!
But please not like Socom 4
