Spiderman: PS4 Exclusivity: : My Thoughts

So, Spiderman is now a PS Exclusive. Well done Sony, on detaching the games from millions of fans. The game may be good, but taking away a beloved character from this many people is not the right thing to do.

Oh Boohoo! This article fails on so many levels, it's not worth reading. He claims that - "Sony is strong-arming people into buying the PS4 for just the game". sic.

Firstly, Sony has a business deal with Activition and Marvel. Secondly, Sony's portfolio of games is so broad right now that there are so many more reasons to buy a PS4 than for just this Spiderman game. Sony is not forcing you to do anything.

Lastly, if you claim to be a gamer that loves Spiderman so much, but yet don't know the name of the developer making the next spiderman game... then you fail as a gamer... and as a spiderman fan... and as a games journalist as well.

My take is that "this game" is exclusive because of the deal Sony has (had) with Marvel for the movie. The character himself is not exclusive to Sony. It is not like the NFL license and being exclusive to EA so any other company can approach Marvel to request to make a spiderman game.

Activision just did not renew their contract with Marvel. Chanvces are there will be more spiderman games in the future and they wont be exclusive to Sony but this one is. It's all good and this game looks amazing. It's sunset overdrive meets infamous with wall crawling action.

This game deserves more attention than what it has been receiving and I am glad that it does not tie in with the movie.

Sony made the right move for fitting the movie rights to Marvel in exchange for the gaming right since the Slide Man movies where men.

As much as I wanted Sucker Punch to be the developers I think I am more excited that Insomniac are making it only because I know the game will be fun and the passion that this guys have for Spideman.

Because Sony's job isn't to make Nintendo/PC/Xbox only users happy, they are irrelevant to them, they only care about making their platform the most appealing, and having great exclusive games is one of the best ways to do it. It's good that you're neutral. But it doesn't change the fact that this is business.

Sony and Marvel made a decision they felt was best for them. Activision's last good (according to critics) Spider-Man game was Spider-Man 2 way back in the PS2 days. Ever since the series has been muddling under Activision's watch.

Plus this could have also been part of the deal to loan Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now the real question is, what would you rather. Another run-of-the-mill Spider-Man game that Activision and Beenox will HAPPILY take your money for? Or, a Spider-Man game backed by a high caliber developer that can potentially be something special?

He's right though! Sony is winning in the end, and strong arming has quite a bit to do with it. In fact, there are so many amazing looking exclusives coming in the next year that it looks like I'll be getting a PS4 for myself too! I know that's the industry, but you can't help wishing that Sony would renounce their ownership of all those amazing studios like Naughty Dog or Santa Monica. I mean they're good because they help fund new studios to create amazing games, it's just tragic that the deal entails being owned by Sony, which deprives everybody without a PS4 of some of the most unique and brilliant games of the last decade. So yes, Sony isn't 'forcing' me to do anything, but it's depriving me and a helluva lot of PC (and XBO) users of these brilliant games including GOW, U4, HZD, DS and now Spiderman (I'll just let you figure out those initials on your own). Not really, DeadRising 3 was published my MS, it went on to Steam in 2014. There is a chance of the game going onto PC, not sure Xbox. Marvel's Game department are in Partnership in getting this made. If this game is successful, there is a strong chance for further iteration going multiplat.

Sony still have the movie rights, Marvel won't get a penny from Homecoming. The deal is that Spidey is in the MCU, Marvel Movie will lend heroes they own to Sony published Spidey movies and Sony will lend Spidey to Marvel Movie published movies.

Part of the deal is probably that Sony has the video games rights of Spidey for however long that movie deal is. So that would make the game a Sony produced/published game developed by Insomniac.

Thinking a smaller scale developer like Insomniac acquired the video games rights of Spider-man from Marvel and then reached for publishers is foolish.

I think, outside of first party owned IPs and the like, letting games be available to more players is a good thing to do. Most gamers should. So it bothers me that people want a console to die because the company is letting more players experience their games, while praising another console-maker that could easily make their game available to more players.

It is possible PC just wasn't an option because Insomniac just doesn't develop for PC, though. And, to note, it doesn't bother me that first party IPs stay exclusive. Microsoft is choosing to bring games like Gears of War and Forza to PC, and that's a respectable decision. Sony doesn't bring games like The Last Of Us and Ratchet and Clank to PC, and that's also a reasonable and expected decision. No ill will to either, there. However games like Street Fighter, Spiderman, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Tekken, Bayonetta, etc... We should want those playable to as many players as possible.

EDIT: Also, I don't really have an issue with this game in particular being exclusive, just that people put down one group for expanding the number of people that can play their games, while praising someone else for restricting the number of people that can play a game.

I see no outrage by many PC gamers about how Microsoft's Windows OS much monopoly pretty much makes all 3rd party PC games Exclusive by default to Microsoft, but its such a bad thing for gamers only when it is outside Microsoft's. paradigm OS and Graphics Api.
If you and others want it to be fair, be fair about it..why is Microsoft's OS and Apple not Opensource so all PC 💻. OS's could benefit from great 3rd party games. On All PC' Os..instead of pretty much only one companies OS..

They are commenting on the idea that putting most of the major console exclusives on PC could inevitably render the need for a console useless. Both are business moves. One is more likely to increase the perceived value of the console, while the other is more likely to increase the profile of the company...but possibly at the expense of the actual console.

There are definitely some more reasonable people commenting, but all you have to do is look at the comment section on articles about it to see others sitting by gleefully hoping it will kill the Xbox One.

I am of the opinion that bringing Xbox games to PC will reduce the strength of the Xbox brand, but that Microsoft will continue Xbox and Windows as a united gaming platform. Future Xbox's will still sell fine because there's a lot of people that don't want to deal with the hassle of PC. All Microsoft has to do is sell enough to break a profit on Xbox, it doesn't have to be a runaway success. Since their games will sell more copies and they can just reduce production on consoles, they won't really be any worse off.

Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar company with tons of market research and analysis, if they looked at the numbers and it wasn't going to work out, they wouldn't do it. If any investors thought the move would reduce Microsoft's profits, we'd be seeing stock drops. But that's not really the case.

Having third party developed, third party IPs available to everyone is an ideal. It's unrealistic we will ever reach that. Microsoft took a step in that direction by making their games available to a wider audience, but were put down by it. That's what you're trying to do now.

I'd love if I could install linux or iOS and ditch Windows, but that's probably never going to happen. However that doesn't mean we should put companies down for expanding their audience and making their properties available to more people.

They may have not being 10/10 or anything, but they were leaps and bound better than those Amazing Spider-Man games imo. gamers have been blind for years by not supporting Playstation. They realize more and more of their favorite games are only on PS.

Problem is easily solved by buying PS. And when Sony's the publisher, they have every right to keep it exclusive...

This exclusive is no different than any other exclusive. I bought a PS for PS games, not to cry about games only on xbox. And I get people make mistakes, you can sell your xbone on ebay for $200-$225 and put that towards a nice ps4. Or, if we're going to cry about games I can't access you could always put that money towards a wii u or 3ds and enjoy nintendo games.

I'm not even sure why this game specifically is getting so much attention from whiners that can't figure out how to buy the system it's available for.

I own both systems and if u ask me the ps4 is so much better then the Xbox one, which I got for halo and was sadly disappointed by it. Haven't turned the Xbox on in months. Only good thing I got from owning one was Dead Space for free.

I don't fell like Spiderman itself is a big system seller at all. Sure some diehard fans might by a ps4 for but considering ps4 owners to xbone is more than 2:1 if the reports are correct, the may already have one.

Insomniac, however, is a huge system seller. Their name alone will probably push the game more than Activision published Spiderman games. Their exclusives have sold a ton more than the few multiplats they released.

Well I remember when rise of the tomb raider was a ms timed exclusive and you Sony fans bashed ms and the game for being only on Xbox when the game was multiplatform before. There are many reasons why Spiderman being exclusive is an absolute travesty for all gamers. First off this is Spiderman, not some new game cooked up by Sony, he has been one of the most iconic and established character in the entertainment for a very long time.
My problem with Spiderman being exclusive is the amount of people who will be denied to play as him. And that's the Xbox, PC, and Nintendo community. I understand that Sony has rights to the Spiderman franchise but that doesn't give them the right to deny other communities apart from its own to experience Spiderman.

Now if you think Sony has all rights to do what they want with a renown franchise like Spiderman, then take this as an example of what could happen in the future. Xbox could just see the success of Spider-man then they would want their own superhero franchise. Let's say they make an X-men game and make it exclusive to their console. Now you have 2 of the best superhero games for 2 different platforms and a very fragmented community.

I know Sony love to have a plethora exclusive games but this is a game that doesn't belong to them but belongs to everyone. Imagine what Stan Lee would think if he knew that a Spider-man isn't available for everyone, he would absolutely want all to experience this Spiderman game. FYI I only own a PS4 and no other consoles so I'm not port beeging.

Are you seriously that idiotic it's pretty obvious that a deal was made with marvel concerning the use of spidey in the MCU it was a very smart business at that.

If it is well received this exclusive will definitely be a system seller. If you wanna play it buy a ps4 if you can't afford one buy a used one and resell with the game and take the small financial loss after you've had your fill a ps4 can be had on CL for sub 200 easy and resold for the same source I've done this 3 times.
Each platform has exclusives I wanted to play sunset overdrive coincidently by these same developers since it's launch I waited til I found an X1 for 140 with two controllers and the gears of war remaster. and bought Sunset Overdrive off eBay for 8bucks. If you can't afford both be happy with what the system you chose (or the one mommy and daddy bought for you) and play the multiplats and exclusives I just don't get the backlash the moment spidey was in civilwar I knew this was coming are those with industry ties that shocked?
