God of War Gameplay Reveal Demo Proves Naughty Dogs Influence On The Industry

They say the highest form of flattery is imitation and if that proves to be true, then developers over at Naughty Dog studios must be colored with blarney during Sony’s E3: 2016 Press Conference. Games have always had stories attached to them, however, many of these stories were flawed, and its characters bland and monotonous as it used to be that story and characters didn’t matter all in games. All that mattered to the industry at the time, was how the game played but after the monstrous success of The Last of Us,

It's called the TNDE or "The Naughty Dog Effect".

It's even on The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wind when Link steps into Nathan Drake's rock climbing boots.

Imalwaysright2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

That rock climbing is from SotC. That's the Team Ico effect.

miyamoto2864d ago

LOL!

The Team ICO Effect is best known for magnificent gigantic boss battles not rock climbing as seen on many games after it.

As for Naughty Dog, Uncharted popularized cinematic storytelling in gaming and of course rock climbing among others.

The Last of Us popularized grounded storytelling.

solideagle2864d ago

Even days gone had this effect. When a character talks while walking it reminds me of Nathan drake.

Imalwaysright2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

Oh you're one of those that belives that everything that ND does is new and original and everyone else is copying them. ND popularized nothing of what you mentioned. MGS1 is considered one of the most influential games ever made because it pretty much started cinematic storytelling in video games and rock climbing has been an element in many games before the 1st Uncharted was released. Tomb Raider and SotC come to mind but the 1st game where I saw rock climbing as an element was Tintin au tibet for the Sega Megadrive but I wouldn't be surprised if other game before it had rock climbing has an element.

LoL! Hell no.
Not the rock climbing you see in Tomb Raider reboot, right?

Imalwaysright2864d ago (Edited 2864d ago )

No. TR Legend for the PS2 which was released before the 1st Uncharted.

And why not show SoTC rock climbing?

This is really true - many of Sony's first party titles seem to be heavily influenced by Naughty Dog this E3 - which can only be a good thing!

UnHoly_One2864d ago

I love God of War, but this new version.... Ugh... Looks terrible.

I hope I'm wrong.

Nyxus2864d ago

What looks terrible about it? I thought it looked great.

UnHoly_One2864d ago

The close behind the back camera seems to have simplified the combat, for one.

But mostly it's about the slow pace and the emotional bond with the Kid.

It's Kratos. He yells a lot and kills everything in his path.

Having a tender moment with his kid while hunting a deer might be great in another game. But it isn't what I want in a God of War game.

poppinslops2864d ago

It looks like God of Babysitting... I actually thought I was watching a Horizon trailer, thinking "Damn, aloy was an ugly kid", until Kratos showed his face.

It's almost as though these studios played The Last of Us and said "let's make our version of that" - Horizon's got the overgrown apocalypse, GoW has the kid (and the camera), whilst Days Gone basically looks like TLou with Bikers... Microsoft and Nintendo are often criticised for lacking variety, so I find it odd that the only games that make me want a PS4 are 3rd-person action/adventure type games - Uncharted 4, Horizon, Days Gone, Wild, Rime, the Last Guardian, Hellblade, even Bloodborne fits that description.

I guess there's No Man's Sky, but I'm still 50/50 on that one... doesn't look like it's getting VR support, so it's gonna need some GREAT reviews to justify it's price-tag.

@UnHoly_One

Its a beginning story sequence, im sure it will have the GOW combat meat parts. I for one love the direction they seem to be taking the series. Do you think the whole game is going to be tender moments and deer hunting?

UnHoly_One2864d ago

No I don't think the whole game will be like that, but from what they are saying, you will be babysitting the kid the whole game.

There is a dedicated button for interacting with him.

And the combat that they showed looked weak compared to old GoW's, due to the limited camera angle.

Yea but again were going off of begining story sequence, when the game reaches its meat it will be similar to all other gow, games I'm sure of it!

Naughty Dogs are a beast.
Having said that Sony Santa Monica are magicians in their own right.
