Xbox One Scorpio Officially Revealed, 6 Teraflops and 4K Gaming Confirmed

After all the leaks and rumor, I doubt there is anyone that didn’t see this coming. Towards the end of Microsoft’s press conference at E3, Phil Spencer officially introduced the new Xbox One code named “Scorpio.”

Awesome, guess I'll hold out on the Xbox One S (was tempted to trade in my Day One XBO) to get a XBO Scorpio at launch!

poppinslops2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Sounds like a plan - either way, the 2017 date gives people plenty of time to decide... I wonder when we'll get to see some games running on it?

Eonjay2871d ago

Its only a year after all and since you already have an Xbox One you might as well put it towards Project Scorpio. It will be a monster. Now we just wait for the price.

2871d ago
Servbot412871d ago

Might as well pick up an old Xbox One once the prices start dropping while retailers make room for the Slim. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some sales for around $199 in the coming weeks.

AngelicIceDiamond2871d ago

MS announced it in a really bold way didn't hold back. Can't wait for games taking advantage of it and next holiday.

nix2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

by 2017 end Sony would have sold 70+ million PS4s, it won't even matter. i said it long time back that MS are going to completely ditch this gen and get a new console, and i was right. the only difference is it's powerful and they'll still support Xbox1 unlike the original Xbox.

so all these 16+ million xbox 1 owners are going to upgrade next year. i really don't know how this is going to work out for most of the owners.

and MS needs games. lots of it. what they showed was handful. and every game is going to Windows 10, it's like you don't need Xbox anymore.

Oh MS, i can't wrap my head around what you do sometimes.

Good gaming, my Xbox compatriots.

Plus when both companies release powerful consoles next year, guess which console is going to sell more? Playstation. you know why? because it's got great library of exclusive games. and those games ARE NOT available on PC. That's logic for those who haven't got it figured out yet.

its_JEFF2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

@Abash what your saying is exactly why I didn't think they would mention it at all, until next year E3 at least. You could have been a XBOs sale, but you're holding on for the Scorpio, not a bad plan at all and something I'm probably going to do. But that means one less sale of an Xbox.

We'll see how things go. Excited to see what the Scorpio can do.

2871d ago
Gazondaily2871d ago

Absolutely mad specs. Insanity. Gonna cost a bomb though

UltraNova2871d ago

Nothing we didnt already know. Except for the fact that they would kill the xbox one slim on arrival if they announced Scorpio this soon...

nveenio2871d ago

This is the Elite Controller of Xbox Ones. I don't think it's going to be a big game changer other than giving a solid performance boost. The only problem is that performance differential doesn't seem to be as big of a deal this gen as it was last gen. With Sony putting out a more powerful console, too, there really is no reason to think the game is changing. I was most happy that Play Anywhere is getting good support, as I have a gaming PC and won't need any version of Xbox One.

GameNameFame2871d ago

Wait wait wait.

All the exclusives are on PC. So why even get scorpio? You can get 6 tflop today on PC and play all xbox exclusive.

Kingthrash3602871d ago

Now.
Power.

Ok.
Price.
Isn't.

I like power too...but games more. I'll wait for more info

freshslicepizza2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

over 500 comments and counting. looks like microsoft tapped into the stratosphere and are about to give a huge bodyblow to the playstation and nx next year. phil spencer is tired of messing around and took the gloves off.

GameNameFame2871d ago

@moldybread

How does that logic work?

MS: Here are all the games you can play on PC!
Moldybread: Look at that bodyblow against Sony!
Me: wat? lawl.

DLConspiracy2871d ago

I'm buying one at launch and I own a PC and PS4. *shrug*

The argument that "why buy a Scorpio when you can buy a PC" isn't exactly science IMO. After all if people wanted to just buy a PC they can now. Some people just don't want that hassle. I love PC gaming but some just dont.

Regardless. I dont see this as a bad move for gamers at all. They can buy the Scorpio build their library and when they decide to buy a PC all their games will be there waiting. Not a bad thing IMO.

conanlifts2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

There are rumours that the xbox one s has had a small boost in power too. No idea if it's true.

fiveby92870d ago

I have to imagine it will be $499. Would be surprised if less. Only time will tell. I like the new X1 slim form factor with built in power. Probably won't get one though. I imagine Sony specs for PS4 Neo will change somewhat before official reveal which is smart. At the end of all this I expect both consoles to be more similar in terms of performance than before. Both will be 4K capable and have VR. I will continue to own both most likely. Although my purchases for titles have been almost entirely for the PS4 to date. Competition is good in the end.

Ju2870d ago

Scorpio might as well fill the very high end. And that's fine. I wonder how the Neo vs. Scorpio game will go. I would be very surprised, if the Scorpio will be the same price as the Neo. If you want full 4k gaming, I guess there is no way around the Scorpio. But if 60fps @ 1080p (or 1440p) is enough, but costs you $100 less I guess the Neo will do just fine. If the difference is less than $100, Neo will have a problem. And then, how do the OneS and PS4 fit into this whole game. At the end, it is also about games. If you want to play exclusives, one could go for one high end (either Scorpio or Neo) and one cheap one of the other to "just play" those games.

SpaceRanger2871d ago

They showed their hand way too early. Holiday 2017? It would have been best to show it at next years E3.

Overall though, it's sounds like a beast of a console! They really kept putting the emphasis on the specs.

DeadlyOreo2871d ago

They wanted to get ahead of Sony, so I guess they just wanted to have their moment in the spot light.

Genuine-User2871d ago

The reception to this annoucement was pretty good in the conference. I'm glad to see that.

Bruh2871d ago

Personally I like this, its being open and honest and they confirmed little details of the specs, so thus people can plan.

Imalwaysright2871d ago

Look at the bright side. Now that the Scorpio has been confirmed, you can start saving up right now because this one won't be cheap.

GrubsterBeater2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

I think that MS handled their Scorpio announcement very well. It is odd that they did not announce a price though... it might be very expensive OR they are waiting till they can lower the cost of manufacturing before announcing a price.

The problem though is that a heavy horsepower console you still need games, and XBOX'S doesn't get very many as it is, not to mention any games that really push the boundaries graphically.

Trekster_Gamer2871d ago

They show their hand to give developers time to start creating games for it just like Phil stated

Kyizen2871d ago

I agree now alot of people will wait to see the price, not buy an xbox one or slim plus most games going to PC

343_Guilty_Spark2871d ago

No they didn't. They revealed the specs because they know Sony will be unable to match it.

pcz2871d ago

nintendo will have to go back to the drawing board. i mean, the NX is reportedly 'approaching' the capability of an X1 or comparable to ps4.. but if scorpio and neo are vastly superior to their predecessors, that would make the NX 2 or 1.5 generations behind, capability wise.

SpaceRanger2871d ago

@343_guilty_spark

"They revealed the specs because they know Sony will be unable to match it."

Hmm, too much salt in one comment for my taste. Doesn't make sense that a software company (MS) would have better hardware innovation than a hardware focused company (Sony). How many years did it take for MS to not have a power brick, the size of a loaf of bread, tied to their console? Something Playstation took care of hardware wise in the PS2 days LOL

jessionpc2871d ago

Wait wait wait wait WAIT... Holiday... 2017?!?!?!?!?

Holy shit Microsoft... That's like... just 2 years short of a normal console cycle... WHY didn't they just wait and make a REAL next gen console?

Oh god... Another 5 years of 8gb of ram bottleneck here we come...

Lamboomington2871d ago

Learnt their lesson once lol

Unspoken2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

If Sony has to push Neo back that goes to prove how much Sony underestimated Microsoft when they showed off the specs for PS4K. It can't even do 4k gaming resolution. Ouch

fiveby92870d ago

If both Sony and MS are successful with new console re-specs I imagine the days of 7-8 year HW cycles is over. 3 years will be the new norm perhaps. We'll see. However, since I also have a gaming pc I don't think I will need a reason to own Scorpio if the 'exclusive' games are all on Win10 as well. Too early to say but perhaps just need my pc and a PS4 Neo.

blackout2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

How? The Neo spec are locked in, dev kits sent out and unless Sony pulls a Nintendo and pulls out for a long delay then the 4TF is what you have. Subpar VR on a Subpar system. Also Sony said the Neo was being made to save money, so if they go back and change then it's not to save money. Can't wait for my Scorpio. Don't defend Sony There the ones that tried to get greedy. BACKFIRED

CyrusLemont2871d ago

How nice of them to give Sony plenty of time to make some adjustments to Neo haha. In all seriousness, sounds beast. Curious to see how much they price it at.

Zeref2871d ago

its holiday 2017. Neo is supposed to launch this year. Its basically confirmed to be more powerful than the NEO

Sm00thNinja2871d ago

The specs for NEO lagged so far behind the scorpio to chang eveerything and start production at this stage would be absurd

NatureOfLogic_2871d ago

Scorpio will be better. There's no doubt.

turdburgler10802871d ago

You can't just change specs like that. Orders have been in place. Parts have been ordered. Whole assembly lines tooled to make the consoles. Most likely for over a few years. Xbox one only got the CPU frequency boost cause it was the only thing they could change on the assemily line. Sony is stuck with the specs they have.

darren_poolies2871d ago

@Zeref

If Sony aren't announcing it at E3 then there is no way it's coming out this year.

GrontB2871d ago

Yeah Sony will do some adjustments to out spec Xbox. But still really interested to see how this goes. Want more VR news!

-Foxtrot2871d ago

@Zeref

Even if it was coming this year Sony could just push it back since the date hasn't been announced.

They probably knew this was coming which is why they said no Neo news at E3

Now they are going to put their ears to the wall about Microsofts console, find whatever they can on it and make sure it's better or at least on par.

DarkZane2871d ago

The Neo isn't launching this year, otherwise, it would be shown at E3.

2871d ago
uth112871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Yeah when Andy House said Neo isn't in a form that's ready to show, it certainly doesn't sound it's ready to be released this year (BTW some rumors made it sound like it would release Q1 or Q2 next year).

It may well be expensive to retool the Neo, on the other hand, I can't see Sony letting MS have that much of an upper hand on them, so they might eat the cost and do it.

DarkHeroZX2871d ago

it looks like everyone forgot that Sony delayed the PS3 a whole year because the CELL wasn't cost effective to use two so they went to Nvidia and got the RSX chip put inside the PS4. And no specs or release date has been confirmed. If this thing hasn't even went through the mass production stage yet then they can easily make a GPU change.

ShiranaiJittai2871d ago

this is more in response to GrontB but it won't let me reply to him directly just your comment thread for some reason.

They can't change the specs. They either have to scrap it and start over thereby wasting millions of dollars on the upgrade they made or they release it and then get even more Bad PR by releasing a brand new system 2 years after that miniupgrade comes out. Systems are planned about 4-6 years in advance of release. As a Sony fan I can see the facts. Phil Spencer just became the Sun Tzu of the videogame industry. PS4 doesn't matter Xbox One doesn't matter Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Neo don't matter. His entire purpose of this was a big shell game. People who play Playstation and people who play Xbox are pissed at these mini upgrades. So where do they go? PC. Which is where he wanted them to go to begin with. This is an evil genius thing. Sony fans will be pissed the NEO won't be anywhere near as powerful as Scorpio and Xbox fans are pissed they have to upgrade again so soon. So we all "revolt" and go to PC where he wanted us all along.

freshslicepizza2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Microsoft just put a big damper on Neo because now Neo doesn't look too powerful until the PS5 arrives. All Microsoft now needs to do is further collaborate with Oculus and have both the console and pc market against psvr.

Sony will not wait until Scorpio comes out, they want to tap into 4k video now and ultra Blu-ray

JackBNimble2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

That's because neo is this gen not next gen like scoropio

Bruh2871d ago

Yup cause you can overhaul a GPU/ CPU set up within a year of production right? lol who the hell is stupid enough to think Sony will adjusts their system based on Scorpio? They can upgrade the RAM and thats about it, the Neo is rumored to be 2x as powerful as the PS4 and thus about 3.72 TFLOPS of power vs 6...not to mention it seems like the Scorpio will be using a dGPU set up vs the APU in the rumored Neo specs

fanboysmackdown2871d ago

And how will Sony adjust these specs when they're releasing Neo with the VR in 4 months? I'm thinking MS knew all this so why not reveal Scorpio.

ThyMasterDebater2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

If Sony hasn't entered production they could push scorpion back 4 months and add the extra beef, It would just be some renegotiations with their chip manufactures. Even 8 months would still put them way ahead of a 2017 Winter release. Will see I guess. Sony has changed specs before months prior to release, It wouldn't surprise me this is why they are not showing at E3. I'm assuming Neo was pushed.

Kyizen2871d ago

Pretty sure $499 no one can ever release a $599 console again after Sony and the jokes

Kyizen2871d ago

Neo is fine cause it will be $399 and a 4k bluray and streaming. Not 4k gaming but Sony will have a huge jump on VR and better looking games. Scorpio is a beast but with no price yet and over a year and half it has to play catchup and if you are talking VR plus a system you are looking at $1000 just to get started that excludes alot of console gamers ans that crowd will already have 4k on PC.

343_Guilty_Spark2871d ago

Sony has no time to adjust anything.

pcz2871d ago

im not fooled by the use of the xbox 1 branding. its a new console. they are trying to get people to buy a new console and adopt a new generation prematurely.

same for neo

cabbitwithscissors2871d ago

NEO is an upgrade of PS4 to cater for VR. PS4 will still be of use to gamers who want it. These upgrades are still within the same gen so tweaks and minor upgrades of this platform will allow Sony to stay with the 4th generation platform and maintain support for both developers and gamers. The next generation for Sony will come with the PS5 with new architecture and design. This will be the competition to Project Scorpio, not the NEO, though looking at the specs of that reveal, Sony has their hands full just to meet it. Let's see more of this when the calendar rolls over. Jumping the gun if you ask me and completely abandoning the current platform ; that reveal. :(

blackout2871d ago

Sorry those specs are locked in, dev kits sent out. Unless Sony pulls a Nintendo then 4TF is what you have. Enjoy LOL.

Unspoken2871d ago

Of they have to make adjustments to Neo, Neo isn't coming out this year. Better rethink your plan Sony.

shiva12870d ago

Would sony want to delay psvr further? That's some cost to the company if vr is already in production.

Think all possibilities bro.

mechlord2870d ago

This is absurd. Scorpio should not be compared to Neo. Xbox S should. All this does is give sony time to define their ps5 (which lets not kid ourselves, its being worked on) and thow in an extra TFlop for a good measure.

But hey, props for MS for staying relevant with the onsaught that the PS4 was/is

fiveby92870d ago

Sony never confirmed specs of Neo for one. That was all press rumor. But regardless, it is a sure fire bet Sony will adjust specs if necessary. I think it is wishful thinking on X1 fanboys part that the tables are reversed. Given the time and lack of official reveal / timeframe for Neo, Sony will adjust as necessary.

AndrewLB2870d ago

"This is absurd. Scorpio should not be compared to Neo. Xbox S should. "

@Mechlord

I want you look at what you just said and realize how utterly absurd you sound. Xbox S doesn't have a new, much more powerful GPU like NEO does. It's the same as the Xbone but in a smaller form factor. Comparing Xbox S to Neo is completely apples/oranges.

Yes he did. And he was loud and clear about it. I see some fanboys panicking on this site already.

gums0072871d ago

You hear that...i think i hear crickets in the sony fanboy frat house.

I'm actually not fanboy at all, of which i own ps4 and xbox one. I'm a fan on gaming...but it is sure fun to see all these sony "fan boys" getting all defensive.

Seriously who cares. Good for Xbox. It's great competition for Sony to up their game as well. No market should ever be dominated by a single outlet.

Fatal-Aim2871d ago

$499 to $599. I'm thinking $499

Imalwaysright2871d ago

That's way too optimistic but I hope you're right.

lokirevamped2871d ago

That's fine with me.......either number.

XanderZane2871d ago

$500 or less I'm thinking. They are waiting a year to launch. Hardware prices will drop in that time frame. Gives gamers time to save their money and developers time to make games for it.

MachuchalBrotha3162870d ago

Talking to a few friends who do PC gaming and when I mentioned the 6tflops and 4k gaming... $599 min...

For those saying Scorpio is next gen...maybe. But he made it seem like it was just a more powerful Xbox One...sorta like you can get a budget Surface tablet for like $300 or a premium pro model for $600+

Or how you can get a same model PC with different specs at different prices.
I don't see how with consoles it all of a sudden a new generation.

babadivad2870d ago

You can build a 6TB PC with $499 right now. Don't see why a console releasing next year couldn't cost the same.

yea y should anyone buy an x1 or an x1 s now? if they woulda showed some megatons people would be more excited, its cool gonna be a powerhouse but what about from now to december 2017?

lokirevamped2871d ago

Because you have some people that don't care about 4k or 1080p. This might be a smart move. Drop the new Xbox at around $400-$499. With a price in that range the slim and old X1 would have to be around $199-$250. I would love to hear a Oculus partnership. I will give my Old X1 to my wife (Kinect sports). I will also update my PS4 to the Neo version (give my old PS4 to my son).

Scottyxboxoneandps42871d ago

@aragon
Its just choice at the end of the day. And most parents buying for their kids will not know this. And some casual gamers dont care, so this is aimed at the hardcore probably for a hardcore price. Im definatley gonna get one regardless. Xbox just won me back.

MachuchalBrotha3162870d ago

I like reading comments like this. 'Why would anyone buy Xbox S' lol...is that why its already on Amazon best seller list. But I thought no one wanted to buy one

AndrewLB2870d ago

I'm buying one specifically for the 4k Blu-Ray player, just like I bought the first PS3 "Fat" specifically for the Blu-ray player (as did my parents). What i love is how with the PS3, it cost Sony money for me to get a sweet deal on a great blu-ray player.
As for gaming, I game on PC as Gaben intended, not some silly potato.

Sounds like they aren't sure if this is going to be a generational leap or an X1 upgrade. They did hedge their bets saying it will support X1 software but didn't go so far as saying it's definitely another version of the X1. They left things ambiguous.

Star512871d ago

I dont think sony is thick enough to release both psvr and neo in the same quarter

xfiles20992870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Yeah its nice but what are you going to play on it there really was not one mind blowing game from Microsofts briefing what they did announce is we do not need to buy a Xbone to play there games You can have all the power but if you do not have the games it does not matter and that is something Microsoft lacks is great games. They do not have the in house talent Sony has to make great first party games.

HawaiianDreads2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

As someone who recently got into PC gaming I agree. I mean the best part about PC is that you can upgrade the hardware as time go by. Seriously though if the rpg games that came on the PS ecosystem comes to PC, I will no longer have any use of consoles.

Flexiblefish742871d ago

Because not all going to spend shit load of cash to get beat graphics gaming on a pc..

senorfartcushion2871d ago

Exclusives only serve the ignorant.

Gaming_Cousin2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

@Flexiblefish74

If you are a pc gamer like I am, there is absolutely no reason to buy an Xbox One as it isn't distinct enough from a PC. It has no exclusives. PS4 + PC combo >>> Xbox One + PC combo. What is the point of buying an Xbox One?

@Punisher
Yeah!! Great reason to buy one over the PC because who wants thousands of exclusive games found only through steam and not Xbox One.

PunisherRevenge2871d ago

Yeah you're right whats the point. Chances are most people who owns a PC wont have 6tflop of power. So actually this is a great reason to buy one. Especially if its cheaper than building a PC.

candystop2871d ago

I can't speak for others but I'm getting a Scorpio regardless of if games run on pc as well.

NatureOfLogic_2871d ago

@Flexiblefish74

Bad timing, especially since AMD just announced a GPU that will be equal to Scorpio at half the price.

Windows 10 and Xbox Exclusive. UWP is the same damn thing. You are not going to see them anywhere else, so the games are exclusive. Not Steam, MAC, Nintendo, Linux or Playstation.

Yetter2871d ago

So I can buy my games once and play them anywhere. Perhaps you missed the consistent messaging through out this conference. Buy a game once, play it on any MS platform. I got a 980ti in my PC and an XB1. I'll be grabbing a scorpio for sure so my games look awesome no matter what I'm playing on.

ITPython2871d ago

Exactly. For console only owners the 6tflop xb1 is pretty crazy, but if you have a GTX 960/970 or higher PC build then you are already surpassing 6tflop, have access to all the xb1 exclusives, plus all the pc exclusives and multiplat games.

XanderZane2871d ago

Neither does PC once developers start making Win 10 PC games. They will all end up on the Scorpio. Won't need to get a upgraded PC.

ThyMasterDebater2871d ago

Exactly. These are not true exclusives anymore. Great for PC fans.

voodoochild3462871d ago

@punisher

Or someone with a gaming pc can just buy a rx 480(which is likely the card scorpio is based from) and get similar performance for $300 to $400 less.

jessionpc2871d ago

The only point is for console gamers who are ignorant and intimidated by the pc platform.

Other than that, the only purpose the Xbox3.5 has is to extend an already underpowered generation another 5 years.

ziggurcat2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

@343 - there's a few titles that were not announced as exclusive to xbox & windows 10 - I distinctly remember seeing one game just having "coming to xbox & windows 10" rather than the "exclusive to xbox & windows 10" text.

edit: that game was dead rising 4, apparently. so there's still a chance, but I honestly doubt dr4 will be on another platform other than Windows 10 or Xbox.

MachuchalBrotha3162870d ago

Xbox One does have exclusive, last i checked PC is not a console. And not all gamers have a rig powerful enough rig to run Xbox One game.

It comes down to choice and how much of a graphics whore you are really. You can still build a PC today that is more powerful than this console.

DragonDDark2871d ago

The Scorpio is not an upgrade, is the next-generation xbox that will compete against the NX. It will be fully backwards compatible with xbox one and priced at $600.00 or $700.00 dollars.

darren_poolies2871d ago

You mean who needs Xbox when you have PC? :')

AndrewLB2870d ago

I do all my gaming exclusively on PC but will be buying an Xbone S because it can play 4k Blu-Ray and will cost less than stand alone players. This was the same reason why I bought a PS3 when it first came out. Blu-Ray players cost significantly more than the PS3 at the time so i happily let Sony subsidize my purchase of their console so i can watch movies. :)

2871d ago
gedden72871d ago

The Scorpio will be behind PCs when its released.

freshslicepizza2871d ago

all consoles are behind pc's when they get released.

AndrewLB2870d ago

It already is behind PCs. The GTX 1080 cranks out 9 tflops from a single GPU and the GTX 1070 does 6.5 at reference speeds. Most retail cards though run at faster clock speeds than reference which easily makes those cards 10-11 and 7-8 tflops respectively. By the end of 2017, PC GPUs will likely be as high as 15 tflops.

XabiDaChosenOne2871d ago

"Who needs a gaming PC when you can have this"
Apprantly MS since thats where all thier games are going.

Kabaneri2871d ago

The Volta GPUs coming in 2018 will pack up to 18 teraflops this console will be massively outdated lol.

DarthZoolu2871d ago

You know this how and how much will it cost?

AndrewLB2870d ago

It will likely follow the price point of around $599 just like the current GTX1080. Of course for half that price there will be a version that does 10 teraflops.

JasonKCK2871d ago

Scorpio is a gaming PC, all new consoles are.

jznrpg2871d ago

Its the other way around. With PC you can have all Xbox games , Steam etc etc and functions of a pc . With new amd gpus being so cheap and powerful higher end gaming pcs price is going to do down drastically, why not just get a PC and ps4 combo instead and have every game.

Kiwi662871d ago

"why not just get a pc and ps4 combo " maybe because not everyone wants to have that combo but are instead happy with what they have

DarthZoolu2871d ago

My friends are on Xbox and Single player narrative games don't interest me so I don't need a PS4

GameBoyColor2870d ago

fiveby92870d ago

Unless Scorpio is modular then I will stick my gaming pc. Not stuck with one company store front for purchases either. PC is just more versatile still in the end.

s45gr322870d ago

Is going to be priced between $600.00-$700.00. Microsoft did not wait for 4K to come down in price. The gaming PC has no limitations.

You though Scorpio was a next gen console? Think again!

Nice specs and 4k gaming is around the corner at last. Announcing the specs with Sony holding back Neo for another event i think wa a mistake imo

DontShoot-Me-Bro2871d ago

its coming out in 2017 dude, Sony has another 12 months to announce the NEO, even though they will probably announce it later this year, they can take their time.

Zeref2871d ago

Neo is rumored to be coming this year.

Shubhendu_Singh2871d ago

PSNeo is rumoured to come this year in October.
XB1S is 2017.

343_Guilty_Spark2871d ago

@DragonDDark every single rumor thus far has been confirmed. Even the name Scorpio was confirmed. Now you are praying to the gaming Gods the specs for the NEO aren't true. Pathetic.

Lamboomington2871d ago

Neo won't have the raw computing power of Scorpio, but will still be a beast. Also, it'll probably end up being cheaper ? Honestly, given what devs have achieved with exclusives on consoles, it's going to be exciting regardless of which console you get.

That said, 6 TFLOPs... that's a lot

Bigpappy2871d ago

They put Sony in a very tough spot. They need the Neo to do VR properly. But they have to keep the price reasonable in order to sell a fair amount of them.
If they hold back Neo to compete with Scorpio, they end up hurting VR. I think they should release the Neo now, and then release another after Scorpio. There is no easy choice, and M$ knows that.
They said they were revealing this now so developer could prepare games for it, but I think it was intended to dampen Sony's hype over Neo and cause a bit of ciaos.

MS can also make changes before Xbox One Scorpio release. If Sony release first, MS will get the last laugh and they still have plenty of time left.

Aloy-Boyfriend2871d ago

That's the thing. They won't release it first ot later when Scorpio is well into production.

nix2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

well.. this is how it works.

MS announces new powerful console.
So will Sony.

MS releases new console.
So will Sony.

Look where we are this gen when both of them released it around the same time. There will always be more people buying Playstation. Always.

@candy below,

because someone said "Sony" above. and while you are gettting nostalgic over last generation don't forget Sony came out a year late with pricier hardware and how that turned out to be. you know how all that happened? i'll let you out a little secret - pssssst games yo, games. hordes of games.

candystop2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

@nix
Yes we know more people will always buy Playstation so what's your point? With so many uninformed gamers out there it's no wonder. Last generation MS gave Sony a run for there money and sold a heck of a lot more software and services. Really why even bring up Sony? This news is about Scorpio and its gigantic. No matter how many consoles are sold I'm sticking with MS period.

Tobsesan2871d ago

Neo is probably so far in development that they cant up the specs at this point.

Aloy-Boyfriend2871d ago

Both can do that if the consoles aren't in production phase. Neo is not coming this year.

darren_poolies2871d ago

Well you should have said that about the Scorpio if Sony had announced the Neo specs first. But they haven't and none of us actually have a clue.

Loktai2871d ago

Like how the ps4 had its memory doubled last minute?

Tobsesan2871d ago

You guys really think that they say "most powerfull console ever" and let sony slip in with a more powerfull console? They probably have insiders that know what is up. No way NEO will be more powerfull, keep dreaming.

candystop2871d ago

But what if it's upgradeable ? We know nothing and regardless if Sony tries to one up MS it's going to be hard when you factor in pricing. This console is a beast no matter what Sony tries to pull.

shiva12871d ago

@Tobsesan
What was the main purpose of NEO - psvr right?

There are two scenarios

1) Sony changes the specs - further delay to get psvr out. Purpose of upgrade is extended and the price goes up. Pc and rift should sound better.

2) Sony changes nothing. PSVR is out. Neo will be an underperforming console to scorpio. By the time sony launches a console which is of same specs... Microsoft announces of the price drop of scorpio and a whole new console is announced which is again powerful than scorpio. Its a shitty state for sony this way.

seanpitt232871d ago

If neo was coming this year it would be announced tonight but it's not so it will be coming next year this is the year for PSVR

tinkergbr2871d ago

Neo specs already confirmed by developers. Should be going into production soon. No chance of changing specs now!

Realms2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

MS is dumb they just showed their cards Sony can now pivot and delay the NEO to match MS. Sony will not release the NEO this year you can take that to the bank especially now that they know what MS is planning.

2871d ago
ziggurcat2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Tobsesan,

Sony can easily adjust the specs on their upcoming console given the info they would have seen at MS's presentation. They clearly did it with the RAM on PS4, and that was less than a year before the console's release date.

No way will Sony have a more powerful machine than this it will be on par at the very best but even that's going to be difficult. Fair play to Microsoft they have got some balls and are determined not to be beaten by Sony again for power.

Deadpooled2871d ago

wouldn't put it past Sony to troll people by revealing the Neo tonight with boosted specs, even though they stated it was not going to be revealed this E3

ecchiless2871d ago

Deadpooled2871d ago

@ecchiless

It's a war worth fighting! Competition breeds success and new games, and we gamers are the winners!

ecchiless2871d ago

@Deadpool....

Indeed, we are the real winners, im planning in making a dual boot with windows 10 in my pc, why? cause some of the MS games that are coming to pc picked my interest, recore and scalebound are the ones btw, still wanna see more of them.

OFT: Also wanna buy a new gpu, maybe that new amd looks cheap and good for decent gaming.

stuna12871d ago

The thing is Sony never announced the release date of the NEO! For all anyone truly knows, the topic of discussion could be a PS4 slim as well with upgraded specs!?

I don't see Sony ever taking a back seat to Microsoft ever again after the PS3's launch.

rainslacker2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Yeah, MS took a risk announcing so early. While they probably have a reasonable expectation of what Sony is doing given how these things work, but Sony could easily steal all of MS thunder by announcing a system for this year, or early next, a new UHD Slim(likely since they have interest in the medium), and close or better specs than the Scorpio(although unlikely), even if it's pretty high priced, because MS iterated pretty hard that this was for the discerning gamer who wants better performance. They've opened the door for Sony really, so what Sony does depends on what the Neo specs are, and where it's at in the design phase.

Even if the Neo isn't 6TF, Sony could release a 4 TF system this year, and pick up all those discerning hardcore players, leaving less for MS when they finally release. Odds are, most people aren't going to pick up another system after already having one. Biggest question is is would 4TF support 4K gaming on a closed console system which doesn't require hardware as strong as PC to achieve certain results. If they are confident it can, then Sony has a strong hand to play.

ecchiless2871d ago

@rainslacker

Im thinking about that too, 4tf is good enough or not? After ND work in uncharted 4, where they show how much they can do with all the hardware limitations, im thinking that a big part of sony "strong hand" is the ice team, how much they can improve the api to get the most of the new hardware, pretty sure that 1rst party developers are gonna show us that.

-Foxtrot2871d ago

Unless they wanted Sony to know for whatever reason

Them make a powerful more expensive console only for them to release a slightly less powerful one BUT less expensive would give them the edge.

Maybe it's a trick.

StifflerK2871d ago

It's not just the Scorpio, but the X1 S as well.
The old rumors had the PS4K launching close to PSVR in Oct 2016, the X1S has 4K video and HDR and launches August, but then there's the beefed up Scorpio launching in 2017.

Will Sony release the PS4K now, or delay it to beef up the specs? How will it effect PSVR?
Delaying seems like the best idea long term, but that'll mean the X1S will be the only 4K vid console on the market at least until the NX. But then again maybe Sony will have two consoles to announce today as well?

But if they have one console to show, and Sony delays it to beef up it's specs, what's to stop MS from doing the same? Maybe MS are deliberately doing this and planning a last minute switch, the same way Sony switched to 8GB DDR5 with the PS4? Just seems a bit random of MS to specifically mention those stats so early....???
Either way it'll be interesting to see them try to outdo each other, but it's looks like 4K gaming is on the way.

The only thing I'm certain of right now is that I need to upgrade my TV, lol.

rainslacker2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

X1Slim is not 4K native gaming like the Scorpio. Any 4K slapped on the box is there to confuse the customers, just like 4K has been handled up until the current UHD standard was finalized rendering much of those 4K claims moot for how many people will want to use it. X1Slim is UHD/FDR compliant, which means it has the proper HDMI chip, and that, along with likely a 4K upscaler...which TV's do better in most cases, is probably the only difference to the hardware besides efficiency designs. FDR on games isn't really anything that isn't possible now, because FDR is rather moot for the GPU. USB interface may hinder it though, but from my understanding the X1 has USB2.0.

I don't know how much of a delay would be needed to upgrade the specs. Depends on where it is in the design/production process. It's unlikely they'd need to if they release this year, because they would just likely increase their lead over MS anyhow. PS4Slim could be incoming, and I wouldn't doubt it'll show up at the Sony presser tonight. Sony has a lot of interest in having a UHD/FDR compliant console out there right now, and it'd be better to get it out while the stand alones are still $400+. It's a tactic which has helped them sell a lot of consoles in the past...all three prior PlayStations in fact.

4K in general is a confusing spec, and not all 4K listed devices are actually FDR compliant....so anyone looking for 4K, gaming or media wise, I'd highly recommend going and doing some research. For instance My expensive receiver I brought 2 years ago I got because it supported 4K, but it will not work with FDR/UHD HDCP2.2 encoded media. Luckily, my recently purchased TV is FDR compliant, otherwise I'd be quite upset if I had paid full price for it.

Since you may be looking for a 4K TV

Any TV brought now, and actually made since 2015, is likely to be FDR compliant....but if it doesn't say FDR, pick another one. If you have it hooked up to a receiver for input switching, it's likely not going to work, because there are only a couple HDCP2.2 compliant receivers on the market right now.

Best terms to research

USB2.0
HDCP2.2
FDR
UHD
Annoying copyright protection which screws over early adopters of 4K

ShiranaiJittai2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Zeref it's not a rumor they announced it before E3 even started. They said releasing this fall will not be at E3. Looks like Xbox Scorpio is why. It really wouldn't look good to announce an upgraded PS4 20-30% more powerful than PS4 mere hours after Xbox announced a system 6 times the power of their own system.

Phil Spencer just played the entire videogame industry like a fiddle. We are all pissed. We will all end up on PC. Where he wanted us all along.

Nix no that isn't correct. Unless they scrap the NEO and start production on a new system RIGHT now they are screwed. Don't get me wrong a new system will surely come out from Sony for 2018 probably. But it won't matter because Xbox Scorpio is just a trump card. It's only more powerful to make Playstation scramble to make a new system to abandon their plan and therefore honor with their customers that you can play the PS4 games. Unless Neo is cancelled RIGHT NOW. then we have a PS4 released in 2013 NEO released in 2016 and a new Playstation released in 2018. From a PR perspective that is an absolute nightmare. From a developer perspective that is a nightmare. Games take longer than a year to make people are under this illusion that these companies that make these yearly releases make the game for a year. They rotate studios. Here is what developers are going to see. Well I can make this game for PS4 or I can make it for Xbox One. Oh wait this new console is coming out for Xbox oh wait there are new specs for an upgraded PS4. What do I make this for? Oh wait Sony is making a new system after the Neo but we are already making this game for NEO and PS4 and Xbox One.

You can't make triple AAA titles on a 2 year turnaround. You just can't. These games take about 3-5 years to make usually and we aren't even including planning there just the development. That model doesn't work when a new console releases every 2 or 3 years. Developers already run into this problem with 5-6 year console cycles. Now that is cut in half. Oh but wait those games they want me to make for Xbox one and Xbox Scorpio I can make that for PC as well? Ok I will just do that then.

In the next 5 years watch more than half the current console gamers go to PC. I say this as a Console fan and as a Sony fan. Microsoft just won this preemptively. Microsoft has the funds to make new hardware every few years for decades. So does Nintendo. Sony doesn't. There is no way to look at this that comes out good for Sony. :(

Veneno2871d ago

I am convinced that you have no idea what you are talking about

ThyMasterDebater2871d ago

Actually, Sony has the upperhand if they haven't went into production. This is why Microsoft was also vague on specs. It's a dance. I personally see scorpio as a reactionary move to NEO in which microsoft had to just come up with specs and announce that. Scorpio was never mentioned till NEO poked it's head out, So either microsoft picked it up from devs or they are now reacting.

sAVAge_bEaST2871d ago

Track record for Hardware Production.. -beastmode

WiiU-Dude2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

I don't think Sony will worry much. PS2 was the weakest. PS3 took 2 plus years for developers to overcome some frame rate issues and even in the end there was never a HUGE gap. PS4 and Xbox One fuel a technical debate really for 2 reasons of course - resolution and frame rate. Neither machine seemlessly did 1080p/60fps. Sony's did much closer, but many titles opted for 30fps and even a couple went 900p. XB1 was even more troubled to do this. These issues created major headaches for people.
Now with NEO and SCORPIO, 1080p/60fps should no longer be the slightest issue for either machine at their purported spec sheet. Scorpio's confirmed, NEO's all but confirmed. However, even as NEO's stands it shouldn't have trouble doing 1080p/60fps. I hear for VR they want minimum 90fps. So I'm betting Sony is thinking, fine someone has to be lower spec wise let Microsoft be the more powerful system, but we have a much richer exclusive library and our exclusives will truly be exclusives.
Just like now, America will likely continue to be MS's solid territory. Japan will still not buy the thing if they sold it for $99. Europe, I think, will continue to mostly shun Microsoft.
I love all game companies, though Im a Nintendo man at heart. However, in the battle of Microsoft and Sony, I kinda pull for the underdog Xbox. I don't want to see it leave the market. I think in spite its games no longer truly being exclusive it still pushes Sony like Sony pushes Microsoft...while my beloved little Nintendo matches to its own little drummer its own little bubble - I love you Nintendo.
Anyway, Scorpio sounds beast!! However, owning XB1, PS4 and WiiU and all systems goin back to 8 bit, I will buy the Scorpio, NEO, and NX when they hit. I love gaming and I appreciate what all companies bring to the market!! We gamers are all the better for them pushing each other. It's called competition.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil9d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19928d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop8d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom7d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor8d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog8d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit8d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie8d ago (Edited 8d ago )
