I'm more interested if the new Xbox can play all Win 10 PC games ( i thought I read that rumor somewhere). That would be more of a concern than actual power.

What MS hasn't learnt is that - it's not always about powerful machines. You need games to play on it. Good games. Whole of last year MS depended on Halo/Forza/Gears and third party games.

You could level the same criticism at Sony and Nintendo, to be honest. We've just seen the launch of the fifth Uncharted game and recently witnessed the unveiling of seventh Gran Turismo game, although they've milked that franchise much more than the number would indicate with prologue releases and GTPSP etc.

The fact of the matter is all three console manufacturers have their staple franchises which are relied upon. Microsoft has Halo, Forza & Gears, whereas Sony has Uncharted, Gran Turismo & God of War, and Nintendo has Mario, Metroid, Pokemon and countless others. I'm not sure why Microsoft is singled out in this regard when both competitors do the exact same thing and Microsoft themselves also invest in new IPs regularly, such as Sunset Overdrive, Recore and Sea of Thieves.

microsoft could in theory screw up both sony and nintendo by having consoles much like cellphones with upgrades all the time. they already have 90% of the pc market with windows so it's not out of the question they can simply create steam like consoles to go with it.

does a PC game have to be UWP / W10 in order for it to work on the XB1? While it certainly makes the whole process of PC - Console easier I don't think it is a requirement. Especially given that some of the same indie games released for PC now are playable on the XB1 and PS4. Windows store is just the PC side of digital distribution just like Steam. If a game is made available on the Windows store then it is likely able to be played on the XB1. The potential to double their sales is something they would not simply ignore.

Call it a loophole to which many PC developers / publishers may take advantage of because they wouldn't have to recompile anything. Their single release that is playable on PC and console means more $$ for them by having less overhead.

Sony also had - inFamous. Motorstorm, Resistance series, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2 n 3, Demon's Souls, Ni No Kuni, Heavy Rain, RnC, Journey, MGS4, Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, Heavenly Sword, Modnation Racers, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Xillia, Puppeteer, Nier etc...

Some of these have actually started or is continuing on PS4. Most of them are not one off games.

Microsoft doesn't need Steam, they have a store of their own. They simply need to offer PC games on Xbox. If they then helped developers do an optimized version for console they would easily have more console exclusives (since so many are convinced that matters).

But should Sony be worried, no. They've done an excellent job of convincing people to believe the PlayStation console is better know matter what. Reality doesn't matter, their fans will just uproot the goalpost, move them to their desired position, close their eyes and cover their ears.

Nova, yes both sides move goalpost. But nobody moves them like Sony fans. I personally don't move them. I have never believed exclusives matter. It was too easy to see most failed. A company could claim some value from the small groups of people that gravitate towards a certain title but for the console maker and the developers they are more waste than value.

Resolution, I know the majority can't tell the difference. The truth is most are or have been watching 1080p cable feeds in 1080i for years now and had no clue. So when someone complains about 900p I know they are far more likely to be repeating what they hear instead of basing it on what they see.

Last generation with the need for blu-ray. People going on and on about uncompressed sound on their tv speakers or --itty $150 surround sound system. A complete joke. Blu-ray could have waited till this generation. Sony wanted video revenue and rallied sheeple to push it. Which still hasn't paid off since DVD still dominates. Why is that? Because the mass market doesn't care about HD to that extent.

Sadly sheeple seem to always rule, which explains why marketing is one of the most lucrative business' in the world. But it also is why so many developers go out of business and why big companies get themselves into trouble. The reality is more power should be geared towards better gameplay and not the next tier of resolution. I want better Ai, game mechanics and more life like environments. Not 4k. The need for higher and higher resolution is a sign of stunted growth that has more in common with our newborn days when shiny and bright things ruled. Oh, pretty!

Time to evolve.

As for the Steam pie, Microsoft already has a pretty successful pie of it's own. It called Live. It will become one with the Windows Store. They also have something Valve doesn't. A successful Steambox. Most Steam users have a mid-range PC. The next generation of console (Scorpio?, probably closer to 10 teraflops-2018) will more than fit the needs of that group in resolution and will be better priced. Add PC game support and cloud compute and suddenly Live and Xbox become everything that average user needs. Moving goalpost, bad. Seeing beyond where things are now, good.

Im all for evolution, but last gen's low res camera/motion control fad that bled into this gen, was clearly the less future-proofed investment. Now there's some catchup to play. what's holding us back right now aren't exclusives, but third parties having to cater to the weakest link in the chain.

It's not all marketing, they want it to be but consumers drive the market too. We saw that happen with digital music. If this business was all marketing then 3D & Kinect would still be stamped on every game and we'd be DRM'd worse than we already are. 4k console gaming itself is reliant on all of us buying new 4K tvs, after they just finished trying to get us to buy 3D ones a few short years ago. That's a huuuge marketing hurdle.

The reality is a lot of the things used to differentiate the two consoles don't seem to matter in any other space for many of these people. If resolution really matters they'd only own a PC. Cable companies would have changed set top boxes a long time ago. The same people complaining about 900p probably own a 1080i cable box and never knew. Cable company equipment was sub 1080p for years after 1080p feeds were introduced. Netflix was throttling resolution and no one knew. The only thing that makes it an issue is someone pointing out bullet points on a statsheet to get you to buy their machine over another.

Uncompressed sound is the same. Most people don't buy B & O or Definitive Technology equipment. They get a sound bar or a system in a box. They bought a console in the first place for convenience and cost. To pretend that uncompressed sound is a selling point for that user is a joke. Fun fact, science says the vast majority of the public can't determine the difference between compressed and uncompressed sound. Again, not a real selling point, just marketing. Like undercoat on a car.

Sheeple are gullible and everywhere. Each year companies spend millions on superbowl ads that often make no sense but they know if it gets attention it will sell their products. Old Spices was a dying brand until marketing made it popular again.

So don't get nauseous or offended by phrases like goalpost being moved, that is just pointing out manipulation. Be more offended by companies being manipulating. And don't think it's always about you. But if it does offend you maybe you need to look at it from the other side.

Trouble Bubble, let me break it down for you. 900p doesn't matter because the vast majority can't tell the difference between it 720, 1080i and 1080p. Put the average gamer complaining about it in a room with a PS4 playing a game at 900p and they would never know. Uncompressed sound? The guy that can tell the difference is called an audiophile. He spends more on one speaker than the average console gamer spends on his console. You know why? Because that is the type of money it cost to actually play that quality of sound. You're not getting it from your tv speaker.

3D is exactly my point. The manufacturers already know the science. They know most people get nauseous from 3D. They knew it was going to be a niche. But they use it every 20 years or so as a marketing ploy to make a little extra money. And Kinect evolved into Hololens. Considering the first sold well enough to provide a study group for the further evolution that may make Hololens an industrial success isn't a waste. It may ultimately fail because of other products, though there will be apprehension to something that shines a laser right onto your eye. But the potential capital risk is well worth the potential market. AR can be hugely profitable. And Kinect is a huge part of that.

As for the weak link argument that is , as it always has been, laughable. More marketing. Consoles period would be the weak link if there actually was one. But PC is far more powerful and all of the amazing things being done in the PC space shows....oh, wait. It doesn't. The big difference between PC and consoles, resolution and frame rate. Each generation we hear about the amazing things they'll do with the amount of power and we get the same stuff. The best we can do is hope that now that we are at the point where everything will be at 1080/60 in a generation people will move on from the next resolution and focus on new gameplay ideas, better stories and better ways to bring all of the parts together. Kinect has value, even if it is a small value to gaming it could be useful.

What needs to change is perspective. In a medium that should be based on creativity everyone is too focused on repeating. Old technology instead of new ways of using technology. And less marketing trying to sell poor people on luxury items. It hasn't worked well in America.

Sony shouldn't really be concerned about XBScorpio in terms of raw power because, the Neo is just a slight upgrade to accommodate extra performance boost for PSVR, The Scorpio is a flat out successor to the Xb1, ie the Xbox 4. Bill Spencer said he's not interested in a xbox 1.5.

But Sony may have to worry if the XB4Scorpio will work with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. This mean MS won't need to create their own HMD, and those are way more superior to psvr in specs. And if these leak specs are true, XB4 kills the Neo in 2017 but the PlayStation after Neo will kill the Xb4 in 2018-19.

I think Sony started an arms race with the Neo. I personally think that the Scorpio is going to be a generational leap and defacto Xbox "Two". With the Neo coming out so soon, by the time Sony releases a true update to the PS4, MS will probably release a new mid-cycle refresh. This of course all stems on if the Xbox Scorpio is indeed a generational leap or just an X1.5

What I just thought about is how Nintendo is going to react to these new consoles. The NX is reportedly around the power of the X1. With the NEO and especially the Scorpio, Nintendo is going to be left a generation behind, again.

Nintendo has been behind for YEARS now. They don't really care about hardware performance or anything. They're more about "experiences".....pr oblem is....they haven't really created a good experience yet in my book. So they're kind of a joke to me. I'll always appreciate them in sort of a nostalgic way....but I've completely and totally lost all interest in them the past decade.

Be interesting to see how all the companies position themselves. But I'm still pretty highly skeptical/doubtful that any of these "new consoles" will show up or be mentioned at E3 this year.

The tables could turn for 3rd party performance, but Sony is finally rolling out some great exclusives. Also by the time this launches I would guess PSVR should be out. PS4 already sold 40 million consoles even if they stop selling to a crawl they would be fine.

From a power perspective, assuming that the rumored specs for both are even accurate, 6Tflops will give a boost, but how much of a boost remains to be seen. For instance, Xbox 360 claimed to have an amazing Teraflop(!) of computing power at its reveal. At the PS3 reveal, Sony bragged about a mind-boggling TWO teraflops(!!!) of power for PS3. DOUBLE THE POWER! Certainly the game was over for Microsoft, right? As it turned out, most multiplayer games had better graphics on 360 because of PS3's memory configuration. All it takes is one bottleneck at some point in the architecture to throw a wrench in the spokes and render that additional computing power useless. Lets wait until they release official specs, not only on raw on-paper computing power, but also on architecture, before we start trying to say one or the other will be more powerful.

Microsoft's trump card might be in breaking down the wall between PC and console. If they make PC games run on consoles, out of the box with no modification required, and unify Xbox Live across console and PC, that will give them an advantage Sony could never touch because of the massive (near monopoly status) market share Microsoft has in the PC business.

That's been Microsoft's secret nuclear weapon... I've been saying they should do it since the 360 days. It would make Sony have to partner with, say, Apple or Steam OS/Linux in order to compete, which would heat things up both in the console race as well as in the OS market.

Either way, no lifetime Sony console exclusives like SFV will not be accessible on the XBO. If MS comes up w/ some contractual work around to make it happen for those single titles, that hole will be plugged with the quickness. MS can't just cheat their way into grabbing games that other publishers paid for, nor should they.

Neither fans nor the companies need to be concerned about power if this becomes the new trend. The reality is both consoles would constantly outdo one another. This would simply mean that unless you upgraded every console release you would always be behind with power for your choice of hardware. This would simply lead to exclusive games being the single most important thing.
Now if ms add all games to pc they might have an issue. To overcome this though they could simply add the steam catalogue to the xbox in the future. This would be the biggest breakthrough in the history of consoles in my opinion.

1 of 2 things could happen. Ms could use their own store much like steam, but it would need an overhaul. Windows store is terrible.
Alternatively money talks. So ms could take a tiny cut and in return steam gets a larger user base. Another option is ms take a cut on only ms games, but to use steam and its Games you need games with gold. This would encourage more people to get gwg to access steam. It would give steam a bigger user base, so a win for both companies.

People seem to forget about the cost problem, something that's '4 times as powerful as the Xbox one' isn't going to cost less than $499, and if recent gaming history has proven anything it's that gamers aren't willing to spend more than $399 on a console.

So either the rumours are wrong, Microsoft is willing to eat a huge loss on each console sold or they're just going to end up making the same mistakes they did with the Xbox One and make the cost something that people aren't going to like.

Supposing that all the rumors we've heard regarding specs and releases are true (a big supposition, I know), I think Sony has goofed here royally. I think it's safe to say that (once again, if true) the Scorpio would not exist without the Neo - or, at the very least, would not have been released for quite some time. In creating a mid-life upgrade, Sony - the sales leader with the goodwill of the consumers, has now opened the door to allowing a second try at it from Microsoft. Perhaps Sony underestimated the power needed by its superfluous (in my opinion) PSVR? Whatever the reason, Sony does not have Microsoft money (in Q2 2012, Microsoft made $56 billion profit vs Sony's $17 billion, for example). Microsoft can absorb the financial blows selling a console at a lower price, providing a trade-in program, etc. Even without an added financial benefit to the consumer, you're also dealing with an ecosystem that is similar on three platforms (PC, Xbox One, and Scorpio - Windows 10) vs a split ecosystem (at least according to Rocketball developer, where he said PS4 vs Neo will be almost like programming two completely different consoles), making Microsoft's platform much more attractive and cost-effective to developers.

Had Sony let Microsoft lead the way and create the new console first, it could continue its narrative that Microsoft completely botched its efforts this generation and will do so again. In responding to Sony's seemingly unneeded Neo, Microsoft can claim it's just trying to compete but then blow the specs out of the water.

But, ultimately, this is GREAT fucking news for the gamers. This is forcing both companies to release new, good, affordable consoles with better performance. I'm looking forward to how this unfolds.

Make it backwards compatible and similar price to ps4 was at launch and with their better first party devs and more of them they've got a winning combination - all they'd need is something like a naughty dog game around launch and that'd be big.... Oh I agree, Playstation is the go to console and for good reason it is the most powerful console out and it has the lion-share of games. I don't think anyone can argue that most of Sony's lead this gen came about because it was the defacto power and price leader from the start. The only chance anyone has of stopping that is to create a situation where the PS4 itself is seen as under powered and "old" tech wise. The only way you do that is by introducing something that dramatically changes the narrative tech / power wise. It also is not a guarantee to work so don't take my comments as saying a new MS or Nintendo console would be a winner... It's a blend of price, brand preference/loyalty, and word of mouth. Performance hasn't really dictated success in gaming looking back. Kudos to MS for being competitive with the 360, but I get the very strong feeling that Microsoft is throwing a hail mary with this new system. If it isn't a hit, I cannot imagine a company with so many intelligent people at the helm holding onto a losing business. Competition is healthy, so I hope that doesn't happen.

A power difference that won't make much difference over the neo as both need to run well on their original console else they risk fragmenting their userbase. Here's why you're both wrong. Despite Sony's claims of the "power of the cell" the end result was almost always inferior multi-plats with lower frame rates and lower resolutions. While Sony claimed on paper that the PS3 was "more powerful" the games made for the system speak for themselves. Only a handful of titles actually showed the alleged "power" of the PS3, and when they did it still wasn't all that impressive. The vast majority of console games looked better and ran better on the Xbox 360. Your sarcasm and fanboy brand loyalties don't cut it here.

I own everything. Wii U, XB1, and PS4...as well as all last gen. I even owned all handhelds from DS to Vita. I sincerely doubt it. Europe is the biggest disparity in the machine sales (Japan is never going to buy an American made machine even if they did buy iPhones).

Probably not. These things happen with time and hindsight. If it WASN'T a big deal (that we are told day after day) that PS4 and Xbone launched pretty much in the same 2 weeks and one was substantially more powerful than the other (with utter hilarity), then it is hardly a big deal when one side panics and tries to rush out a solution.

The Xbox 360 had the advantage last gen with its easy to develop for, from the start, architecture. That didn't stop PlayStation absolutely trouncing it graphically with just about each and every genre exclusive.

The same can be said about the PS2 era. You put a game like Forza and Gran Turismo 4 together and have to wonder how the hell was PS2 putting out those kind of matching graphics with its little 300mhz "Emotion Engine" compared to Xbox's Pentium III 700mhz processor.

Power and ease is useless if you don't know what to do with it.

It's not too late for either console maker to alter specs. These are just heavily-optimized PCs now, to the extent that I wouldn't be surprised if 100% backwards compatibility becomes standard. Sony could just up the spec of the GPU they toss in. Microsoft could respond in kind. What's funny is that this could result in both pushing off release, as each waits to see what the other settles on. As always it will be a balancing act between having the best hardware and being first to market.

Nope. It's still this generation machines. Sony isn't worried about constant hype about every tiny thing Microsoft does. It always underwhelmed us and amounts to nothing.

I'm a firm believer in first party studios. Sony has that wrapped up. All the third parties are gonna make the same game across all platforms. With the upgrades both consoles should be able to handle any games made. I think Sony possibly bringing out the neo this year is gonna be the decider.

Which is why I think Xbox players should just sell their crap and move over to PC. All of their exclusives are going over there anyway. Their platform will have absolutely no identity other than "PC Lite."

Why should there be a concern when Sony can just match the specs if they so desire? A little something called "delay the release". Not like Sony needs to rush anything out considering their dominance this gen.

Now suddenly Microsoft is going to create the most powerful console ever with the same lineup of games.

The PS4 AND Xbox One are already powerful enough for this entire gen as far as sheer gaming goes.. Ryse Son of Rome, Gears remaster, Halo 5, Uncharted 4, Infamous 2nd son, Rise Of The Tomb raider, The Order 1886, Forza 6, Last Of Us remaster, Ratchet & Clank.... and so many more coming... It's not for lack of games or gaming at all.. The people who scoff at the devs efforts on these two platforms are entitled brats. Why Sony and Microsoft might be doing these incremental boosts is anyone's guess at this point. Maybe for the VR scene, maybe 4k capabilities... maybe both, maybe more, maybe less, maybe this, maybe that..

the point is.. Play games you have available to you, and the ones coming down the pipeline.

and to the title of this article.... Sony has no concerns. Not because all Sony fans are blind brand worshiping children. But because Sony has it where it counts ... they have always carried the most unique exclusives .. and own some of the greatest game development studios the world has ever known.

I switched to PlayStation after owning an Xbox One for two years.
Why? Because I wanted the Sony exclusives over Microsoft's offerings.
It's that simple.
