Gran Turismo Sport isn't the PS4's visual showcase you had been expecting - VideoGamer.com

Well, I never thought I'd be saying this: The latest Gran Turismo – at this stage, at least – isn't much of a looker. The playable build on show in London yesterday was riddled with technical issues, from screen tearing, frame drops, noticeable aliasing and poor texture filtering. But the biggest issue, ultimately, is that it isn't as big a step up from GT6 as you'd expect from the series' leap onto PS4.

Polyphony has never let us down before and has never given us a reason to doubt. The fact that a company with a good reputation for solid games is questioned shows lack of character.

@septic wasn't talking to you was referring to the article notice I didn't say @septic

WoW!

Gazondaily2896d ago

"The fact that a company with a good reputation for solid games is questioned shows lack of character."

I have a lack of character for questioning PD's next project?

Wow.....

The author is David 'scam' Scamell.
He doesn't own a PS4.
He often writes PS4 attack articles that bait the fans, as repeatedly they have proven to be more successful for Videogamer.com than Xbox praise articles.
This isn't journalism, it's just revenue focuses cynicism.

Crimzon2896d ago

"Polyphony has never let us down before"

I'd disagree with that on account of how GT5 & GT6 turned out, and there's a hell of a lot of people over on GTPlanet who'd say the exact same thing. Polyphony Digital have let the fans down many times over the past decade.

As for Pumblechook, were you still spouting that absurd conspiracy theory of yours back when David Scamell was singing praise for Driveclub at a time when most other reviewers were pointing out how broken and flawed the game was? I suspect you sang a different tune back then, seeing as his opinions at that time were more closely aligned with your own agenda.

kraenk122896d ago

@Crimzon

I respectfully disagree on GT6. GT6 was a great game. The problem was GT5 and the fact GT6 initially was the game GT5 should have been. Forza had the same problem with Forza 5 and 6.

itsmebryan2896d ago

I guess you never played GT 5 and 6. They were very disappointing and a letdown.

freshslicepizza2896d ago (Edited 2896d ago )

@Magnes
"Polyphony has never let us down before and has never given us a reason to doubt."

yes they have. gt5, while be an awesome game in the end, was not that great when it was released. gt5 prologue was also a letdown and was just a quick cash-in.

they really need to get the engine sounds up to par and the bumper car like mechanics hitting other cars and walls is still from the 90's. adding psvr looks to have its toll on the hardware as well with not so stellar graphics and poor aliasing.

sony and many of their fans have a superiority complex, this is why i think sony is pushing forward with ps4 neo. they don't want to look inferior to other vr peripherals. plus at the beginning of this generation after all the resolutiongate stuff and how much more powerful the ps4 was to other consoles you really think they now want to look like their hardware is struggling when adding psvr support? gran turismo was always known for pushing the hardware and looking gorgeous and to be blunt, this doesn't. at least not until they show the final build running on ps4 neo. that's when you will see many ps4 owners upset because they will want the new ps4.

Salooh2896d ago

You guys for real ?. This game vision is all about tournaments. This is not GT7. This is a spin off.

I dont think so.

hay2896d ago

This doesn't look like a sequel at all. Appears to be a lot like GTA5 PS4 was to GTA5 PS3, a next gen, online oriented update. I'm in, always wondered how GT6 would look on PS4.

"The author is David 'scam' Scamwell. "

lvl_headed_gmr2896d ago

WHAT?!?! Poly has never let us down?
GT5 was a train wreck with limited options and the huge difference between premium and standard cars. Many cars were PS2 ports and looked horrendous.

Lets not even talk about GT 5.5 which was called GT6. It actually reviewed LOWER than GT5.

To say Poly have never let us down is nothing short of comic relief.

David 'scam' Scamell writes: "Finally, the game it promised to be at launch, DriveClub is one of the most exciting racers available on PS4." 8/10

BigLurch2895d ago

Oh yes thats right, they dont think a game on your precious ps4 looks that great so you launch a personal attack on them. Man up and admit the game looks crap right now,the sky wont fall in on you haha

Gaming1012895d ago

lol GT6 was a joke... I've been a diehard GT fan since GT1 and I'm sick of the same outdated game engine with the same cars that sound like vacuum cleaners.
The engine is showing its age, with the screen tearing, aliasing problems, frame rate drops with lots of cars on screen, all on a game that barely looks marginally better than GT6.
The car models look alright, but everything else just looks dull, drab, lifeless, and even though Yamauchi claims the audio was redone from scratch, the cars still sound like droning vacuum cleaners... GT5 was my last GT game and if they can't get the graphics and audio right, to heck with GT sport.

I think people forget this is Grand Turismo Sport (which is like a prologue) and not GT7 which by the way will follow this game..

I understand the writers frustration as the more you wait the higher and higher your expectations for the game become, and while that's not fair it is what tends to happen. You see this game looking good, and then this game, and were still waiting...

-But understand this, the guys always push the system and do an amazing game, if it took this long, I'm sure there was a good reason, one of the rumors I was hearing is they were trying to make it so you can drive down to the track. So I'm sure whatever it is, that you didn't see yesterday that has held up the game, is huge...

And this team has always worked like this -Get the game up and running, and then polish and fine tune like a mad man, so by the time this comes out, I'm sure it will be a well oiled machine, that plays so good it will be amazing...

And then GT7 the full and crazy huge game will follow and most likely blow you away... So I understand the frustration but don't worry, I don't think this one will disappoint, I think they will nail it...

SnakeShady2896d ago

Grand Tursimo Sport. Da fuk das it even mean?

donthate2896d ago

SnakeShady:

It means a downgraded game for VR, and by a studio that no longer produces cutting edge games. Perhaps give it to Naughty Dog.... Even though they don't make racers, it wouldn't surprise me that they would excel at that as well.

Mulando2895d ago (Edited 2895d ago )

Prologue was a paid demo, this is a "real" game for the series. According to the trailer, is really looks much more like GT5/6 than anything else. All those grey buildings... well that scene is really ugly, but maybe the city really looks that grey ...
It is really underwhelming and I really hope that that isn't the PS4k "versions" quality

This is not a launch game like Forza 5 was. For a full price title there has to be more in it than ~150 cars and 19 tracks. This is not enough for a game with GT in the name.

JackBNimble2895d ago

Yes , and prolog was shit and a money grab , and sport will be exactly the same. It's posing as a full game just until GT7 is released which probably wont happen for at least 5 years.

i dont believe 50% complete means the visuals will improve. historically, games shown vs. time of release degrades visuals. We will not suddenly see an increase in better lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing, reflections, environment (grass, leaves, wind), particle effects (dust, etc)... I dont think there's any hope for this game.

I expect, this is very downgraded for VR sake. So, for VR sake, let's hope the experience is good... otherwise this is a write off and i'll be waiting for GT7. Thanks.

Update: lol why do i get disagrees? Did I say anything wrong... or do whiners just feel better to click the disagree button. lol. would love to hear someone refute:
- "historically, games shown vs. time of release degrades visuals"
- "We will not suddenly see an increase in better lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing, reflections, environment (grass, leaves, wind), particle effects (dust, etc)"

or, just click the disagree button, and feel better that "i sure showed him... for... saying something... true... that i didn't like to hear"... lol

Sunny_D2896d ago

Uhh many games atleast Sony first party studios have always been able to improve the graphics. Biggest examples are Uncharted 4 from E3, Infamous SS, GOW3 and many other games that looked better at launch than the previews.

daynnight3652896d ago

This site is hella corny with all of the downvotes

IamTylerDurden12895d ago

GTS will be a solid game w/solid 1080/60 visuals. Do u really need another visual showcase on ps4?

AndrewLB2891d ago

Video game developers almost always "aim high" when developing games because is is MUCH easier to reduce the quality of assets to fit a performance target than it is to increase them late in development. Ever try to increase the resolution of an image? You're essentially using software to add information that previously wasn't there through an algorithm and even the best software at doing this isn't very good.

hiphopisdead2896d ago

nope. @Spyroo and @Mr.Pumbleshook. Do you agree the visuals do not look great? Do you agree that when games are revealed in trailers and made playable ahead of release, that quality generally decreases by the time it comes to retail? Do you really think the; lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing, reflections, environment (grass, leaves, wind), particle effects (dust, etc) -> will get better? Or are you fanboys that cannot have a real discussion.

DaGR8JIBRALTAR2896d ago

Look at all the naysayers and detractors coming out of the woodwork, still salty from the greatness that is uncharted I assume. Every Gran Turismo has been beautiful and has received high scores and this new entry will be no different. Why don't you guys just buy a ps4 already lol.

sammarshall1022895d ago

This one looks like it might be held back from VR

agame9142896d ago (Edited 2896d ago )

i think coming from all the disagrees you get on a daily basis even if you have some what a rational thought says something bro....

XanderZane2896d ago (Edited 2896d ago )

True, but the game also comes out on Nov 15th 2016. You think they can complete the other 50% of the game in that time frame. How long have they been working on GT Sport? It seems they have already been working on this game for over a year now. Either it will be delayed or rushed to market for the holidays. It seems EuroGamer is saying pretty much the same thing VideoGamer.com is saying. I'd love to see a next gen GT game with next-gen visuals and gameplay. If they have to delay the game to get there, so be it.

@Mr Pumblechook
I would completely agree with you on this if EuroGamer didn't say pretty much the same thing this guy is saying. We all know that EuroGamer loves the PS4 and everything Playstation. They too said the game looks like GT6, had some frame problems and texture issues.

daynnight3652896d ago

60 downvotes? Lotta pessimists

karatejake752895d ago

It is twice the fps of drive club so you should expect it to look better than forza 6, not drive club.

otherZinc2895d ago

50% complete isn't an excuse, Gran Turismo Sport is terrible.

Looks love Forza Motorsport 6 will stay Champ since Forza Motorsport 4 & counting.

IamTylerDurden12895d ago

Well the PS4 already got a graphical showcase 2 yrs ago...called Driveclub.

GTS is 60 frames so obviously to expect the same level of detail is absurd.

The game is 6 months out and will be playable in VR. It has competent visuals, this is not in the realm of the hideous Gears 4 beta. I just think ppl are surprised when a ps4 exclusive doesn't blow the doors off visually. U4, R&C, infamous, DC, The Order. We r spoiled.

But the biggest issue, ultimately, is that it isn't as big a step up from GT6 as you'd expect from the series' leap onto PS4.

I think VR is a huge step up for the series, drving/racing is tailor made for VR, if they can pull it off at a solid 60fps or more, then the series will have arguably taken the biggest leap forward since the franchise started.

YinYangGaming2896d ago

And yet people who have NEVER played the game commented on the internet that "The king was back" I'll buy this, espcislly if there's a VR version but I'm still more excited for GT7

TwoForce2896d ago

I agree. I think they want push the game on VR launch.

Rookie_Monster2896d ago (Edited 2896d ago )

Wow, this part of the article is really concerning.

Videogamer "There doesn't appear to be any damage modelling, either, with cars simply bouncing off walls and each other, and we haven't yet been shown anything on night racing or weather effects. Whether Polyphony is holding these back until they're ready, I don't know, but with the performance on display yesterday I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that they'd been cut from the project altogether."

If this game is indeed going to be released this year in 6 months time, it might really exclude many, if not all these standard modern racing features in order to make deadline. Man, this is looking more and more unexciting after the joy many had felt when it was first announced last year. But keeping my fingures crossed in the meantime.

amiga-man2896d ago (Edited 2896d ago )

IamTylerDurden12895d ago

Ur a joke. You are so concerned?

Yeah, they are going to cut all damage fx, all weather fx, and the day/night system....gtfo. Gran Turismo is the biggest and most trusted brand in the business. PD doesn't make bad or bad looking games.

I'm sure u were so concerned that R&C went to 30fps right? That obviously destroyed the game huh?

Track record speaks for itself, breath easy friend, GTS will be a hit. Excited to play in vr.

Gol3m2895d ago

Yet it's been confirmed there's damage modelling just not implemented into the build they showed. Perhaps if you actually tried to read more than the arguments that suit your agenda you might actually educate yourself. But then again I wouldn't expect much from rookie

Gran Turismo Sport Has Been Delisted From PS Store

Sony Interactive Entertainment has delisted Gran Turismo Sport from the PlayStation Store as of January 1, 2024.

ApocalypseShadow109d ago

The great digital future. Where games vanish. The benefits of digital just aren't enough over physical to every buy in 100 percent. Especially when my Atari games still work and can be played to this day over 40 years later. Some of these digital games don't even last a whole generation.

purple101109d ago

But in this case everyone who has it still has it

And they unlocked single player to be allowed to progress offline

ApocalypseShadow108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

But in the case of others, they can no longer can buy it or any delisted game. Just like online only games that get their servers turned off and there's no update for offline with bots.

If you like the idea of any digital game being delisted where it's no longer available at all, then you and others are fools. What's all that presentation bullshit guys like you spew?

There should be no reason any digital game should be removed. Ever.

Bathyj108d ago

Apocalypse no one likes it. But let's be clear here.

If you own the game, you still own it. All that's happening here is they are stopped selling it.

Why? I have no clue. But it's the exact same thing if your local best buy isn't stocking the disc anymore and Sony aren't making any more. Same thing, just in the digital realm.

If you want to complain about servers for an online game being shut down, go ahead. But that's a separate topic and can happen to any online game even with a physical disc.

fan_of_gaming108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

@Bathyj "But it's the exact same thing if your local best buy isn't stocking the disc anymore and Sony aren't making any more. Same thing, just in the digital realm."

It isn't the exact same thing at all. When a game gets a physical release, it is always available even if big-box retailers aren't selling it new anymore. For example, I can go on eBay today and buy a new & sealed copy of Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron for PS3, because it once had a physical release. However I cannot buy a copy of Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron for PS4 today, because it had a digital-only release and was delisted.

If Gran Turismo Sport had a digital-only release, it would be unavailable for anyone to buy ever again. But because it had a physical release, in 5 years someone that wants to play it can still acquire it.

Cacabunga107d ago

People should stand against digitalization

purple101107d ago (Edited 107d ago )

I have only brought one or two digital games in my life
Everything I buy is physical

Often from eBay in perfect condition.
Sometimes from a online shop in uk such as

365games
Shopto.net
Simplygames
Base.com

All, who will ship disk to your door on day of release, cheaper than buying from digital store.

Then I either keep, lend, or sell. My choice

No where, did I say I support digital. And yet someone even called me a fool,
Haha
Totally misunderstood, some would say, he’s the fool

With GtSport It ISNT being taken away from anyone who already owns it. So this has all got out of hand with people not even reading the article

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 107d ago
DigitallyAfflicted108d ago

Maybe this will make people realise the future of digital-only games

purple101108d ago

This one won’t though
Because it’s not de-listed and taken away from you
It’s just not on sale anymore and the multiplayer will be shut down soon I reckon. It released 2017 so it’s had a fair run of 5 years online multiplayer lobbies

DigitallyAfflicted108d ago

@Purple, but it could be taken away, like p.t. Demo was, as well is taken away from anyone who didn't purchase GTsport in a digital form and yes I know we can still buy disc version and it's not a big of a deal.

My point is that you can't own something if it's not physical, with digital-only content you pay for the right to download and use and possibly in the future there will be some laws regulating you rights to it…

blackblades108d ago

I mean y'all been whining about that since the ps3 era. To this day im still able to play all the games I payed for.

ApocalypseShadow108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

It won't. Fools like purple think that just because they can still download it now, that it's safe. I've bought multiple games on console and mobile that are no longer downloadable or function. Because the game was either delisted or since it was connected to the Internet, no longer works because the servers were shut down turning those games into coasters. With no update to be able to play some games offline with bots. They're gone.

He won't get it or care until it happens to him and some of his games are delisted and removed or don't work any more even if he "bought it "

EvertonFC108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

If you don't keep your old consoles, your physical disk will be useless too. Do you think console hardware or disk drives will be around in 20 years. Good luck with that.
I'm not saying it's right btw, just pointing out to the physical crowd that digital and physical are very alike when it comes to actually being able to play the games in the future like 20 years time.
When I'm in my care home, I don't expect to be able to play my old digital or physical collection as consoles won't be around or disk drives for playstation.
Unless your keeping the old consoles safe in the attic over time, nobody will be playing there old physical game collections.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 108d ago
EvertonFC108d ago

If you bought a physical launch day copy of GTS you still won't be able to download any of the updates in 20 years when servers are off.
Plus there will be no such thing as a disk drive or a hardware box for that matter in 20 years unless you keep your old consoles.
My point is sadly your physical or digital copy won't work.

Barlos108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

I see this as the digital equivalent of physical games going out of print. They don't continue to make copies forever, at some point they will stop making it, usually when sales dry up and I guess for GT sport that happened some time ago. Also, in the digital world, storage space is not infinite. If a game is no longer selling, why would they waste space on keeping it available?

For those that already own the digital version, they will still have access to it.

frostypants108d ago

I generally agree, but GT Sport is primarily an online game. They probably have some reluctance to deal with the blowback of selling an online-oriented game that may not have active servers much longer. Admittedly that's a whole other issue in itself.

Online based titles like this I wouldn't expect to last forever as the game has been updated iterations as in gt7

Same with if FIFA 20 was delisted as example there's update to game. If something like Uncharted collection was delisted then that's something that's bad

Time to get a PS5! New PS5 owners in the USA can currently claim a game for free, but GT7 is not part of this promotion.

purple101207d ago

GT sport was good. Gt7 is better.

For someone who was crap at racers (and still is) and only played kart racers with powerups, I can say GT sport and gt7 balance SIM/ arcade racing to perfection. Easy enough for anyone to play and not crash but with enough depth to master for years.

Totally different to need for speed / Forza handling where the cars feel 'floaty'.

The dualsense is just supreme with gt7 toi

badz149207d ago

So...will they enable offline saves now or what?

VariantAEC202d ago

From Gran-Turismo.com (the article liked above): "All existing cars and personalized Car Settings kept in Garage will be accessible. Gameplay progression required as normal to unlock additional cars and items."

So... yes, as far as I can tell you'll still be able to use all your collected and purchased cars and race on all the tracks in the game and unlock ones you might not already have access to. That's what I'm getting from the post, but time will tell if this actually comes to pass February 1st, 2024.

Agent75207d ago

After Turismo 4 on the PS2, the series was never the same. Although Turismo 4 wasn't a finished game and didn't play as good as Turismo 3. Turismo 5 on PS3 was a mess, Turismo 6 was Turismo 5 finished. Sport on PS4 was another mess, especially VR mode. Sort of back on track with Turismo 7, but so tiring as with the Forza series. Anyone remember the PSP version that had no championship mode? Turismo has always been average at best.

OmegaSoldati207d ago

Thats why i dont like online only games. Cant believe this, this game sold so well. You need to be a fanboy to keep supporting Sony after this. Bought this thinking that it would take 10 years for this. I'm lucky that there are enough classics and single players for a life time.

VariantAEC202d ago

Looks like PD has the potential to set the bar for closing out always online games.
Back when GT Sport launched you couldn't do anything when you couldn't access the servers, but it looks like GT Sport will retain access to SP race modes, custom races, VR, your full garage, and all tracks. This is much more than what was available at launch if offline.

We still will lose custom liveries and race suits, which is nonsense, but hey if you share them online now they will be in the cloud and available to you in GT7 if you're interested. Basically, we lose MP, but players keep everything we earned and whatever was paid for.
