It's not the triggers on the DS4 that bothers me, it's the rubber that's starts to peel off of the analog sticks that really irks be

FYI I got this controller in Nov 2014, after Sony said they fixed the issue. Yet it still slowly detoriated over time.

Revvin2915d ago

The 360 pads wore down yes but after a much much longer period, years in my case. The analogue sticks on my PS4 pads wore through after only around 6-7 months. I bought a new pad which does seem to be a bit better but I prefer the diamond textured harder wearing rubber on the XBOX One pads though they don't have the funky touchpad and the speaker

oof462915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

@Revvin: Thanks. I asked for comparison's sake. I've read they sell nubs to put on the ps4 analog sticks, but hopefully Sony has remedied the problems.

Gazondaily2915d ago

Lol this is about Playstation.... Fml

marioJP872915d ago

This isn't about 360 at all. Stat relevant.

xHeavYx2915d ago

I've been using the white controller since Destiny launched. The rubber is still intact.

dantesparda2915d ago

My original DS4's that i got with the system at launch had the rubber worn down to the plastic in just 6 days, well one of them did. But the replacements that Sony gave me have been good ever since. So its not all of them that wear down and i think it just from the early batches. I think they fixed that about 6 months to a year in.

MEGANE2915d ago

That has nothing to do with it!. Relax man no one is attacking PS4. I don't have an Xbox an I don't think I ever get one, but that does not make the PS4 perfect!

UltimateMaster2915d ago

The analog sticks issue has been fixed after the first year.

Poli_Games2914d ago

Not surprised to see people fall on the sword for Sony when it comes to this issue. No the analog stick problem hasn't been fixed. My Uncharted 4 controller's sticks are already wearing out, and i have had to replace my white controllers analog sticks do to them breaking within two months. No, i shouldn't have to buy anything extra for the item i bought originally, to work. I understand them wearing over time, it happened to my 360 controller, but over the short span of a month? That's just Sony cutting corners. This is coming from a guy that, for the most part, only plays on a PS4

PhoenixUp2915d ago

What does that have to do with what happened to my DS4

Movefasta19932915d ago

buy thumb grips from amazon

PhoenixUp2915d ago

I shouldn't need to buy thumb grips to have a more efficient controller. I acknowledge it's an option, but the principle of the matter is that Sony should've just built these controllers with better material for long term durability from the start.

Both my Sixaxis from 2006 and my DualShock 3 from 2008 get continuous use to this day and they hardly naturally detoriate on me. In fact even my DualShock 2 still looks to be in good shape after all this time. The rubber on my DualShock 4 started to peel only about only a mere 6 months after I bought it, which makes me worried how it'll look after 10 years of use.

MeteorPanda2915d ago

they fixed that. it was a problem with the first models l noticed.

you can get grips for a dollar off ebay btw, they're pretty good.

KTF262915d ago

Didn't they fixed it long time ago?

2915d ago
rainslacker2915d ago

There's a couple different issues. One where the rubber tears, and basically comes off. One where it dries out and cracks...which I assume is the problem The infected had.

The tearing was poor quality control on the initial batches of DS4's, some included with systems, some sold seperately. I'd imagine some of those are still out in the wild for sale as well. however, the actual problem with the tearing has been remedied....outside of if they have a batch with poor quality control again, which I imagine is feasible.

The cracking is a similar issue, which can lead to it tearing, however it comes more from environmental flaws introduced through normal wear, and I'm not exactly sure why it would be an issue. however, it doesn't seem to be common.

The original problem was covered under and extended warranty by Sony, from 90 days to one year. The second usually shows up soon after purchase, and is covered under warranty.

While the issue should have not happened on the scale it did, the first one I mean, Sony did offer replacements which you could actually get through GameStop, and most people I've seen complain about it seem to not have taken advantage of that when asked. The ones where it happens outside of warranty, like it did for myself on two controllers, happened after the first year, and Sony wouldn't replace them. I just settled for some analog nubs, which I've actually come to like more than the supplied grips.

MyDietEqualsGames2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

buy xbone sticks from amazon or ebay. cost me about 8 bucks and they snap right in and fit perfectly. Best of both worlds

Oh, and you'll have to open up the controller, but it's not hard and doesn't take but about 5 minutes or so from the first screw till the last one being tightened.

Perjoss2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

I've been using thumb grips as I've always preferred sticks that are convex rather than concave. They are really cheap but they only problem I've found is that some companies use a cheap plastic, I've found the rubbery ones to be awesome though.

rainslacker2915d ago

I brought some for my controllers when the rubber wore off. Wasn't too keen on it, but had two $60 controllers which were perfectly functional.

Brought a pack of 2 pairs from GameStop. Some no name brand really. They slip over the current stick, and have a softish rubber side, but the top is a stiff rubber. It's mostly flat, which wasn't an issue as I never had a preference for concave/convex, but it has a nice prickly surface like the picture you showed, which keeps my finger firmly in place when using the analog sticks, and I've come to prefer them over whatever I've seen provided from any controller.

jsin942915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Mine is the same way, it also has issues connecting when not plugged directly into the console. Not really a problem for me , I do want to get one of the colored controllers. :D

Knushwood Butt2915d ago

I read you may be able to fix that by resetting the pad via the pin hole on the underside. YouTube it if you haven't tried it yet.

kraenk122915d ago

You must have a first generation controller then. They fixed this 2 years ago already. Sticks are easily replaced as well.

Ozmoses2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

http://www.gamestop.com/acc...

I bought these after my very first DS4 started to lose the rubber coating on the analog sticks...

these things work like a charm and i've used the same 2 sets with every controller I've had...

I haven't broken a DS4 in quite some time... but since the PS4 came out I've broken at least 4-5 DS4 because the R2 and/or L2 trigger buttons snap to the point where they are no longer functional..

I use the PS 20th anniversary DS4 right now and I've been using it for awhile now... Whatver was wrong with the first generation of DS4's I think they've fixed it.

http://www.gameinformer.com...

also here is an article from November 2014 from Game Informer talking about the DS4 and it's problems...

People out there may not believe me but yeah I've gone through a handful of DS4 controllers... playing a game like normal and then you hear a "little snap" and then all of a sudden your trigger button doesn't work anymore because the components that make it work properly have broken. (definitely an issue of quality)

It's not like I throw my shit at the walls or something. Controllers are too damn expensive.

But Gamestop will buy back your broken controllers...

Bahamut2915d ago

The first two controllers I got for my ps4 (at launch) had that issue, but the other 4 controllers I got after that seem to use a different material that doesn't rip.

S2Killinit2915d ago

@phoenixup
That issue was already fixed. The newer dualshocks analog sticks dont peal off like the older ones.

SuperbVillain2915d ago

What games do you play? once I started playing destiny my controller started falling apart, that game kind of forces you to be rough with the controller sticks so they peeled off and tilted to the sides a little...

SynestheticRoar2915d ago

The old sticks when the PS4 first came out, was affected by that. Easy fix would be grips. Cheap grips on ebay 4.99.

ShadowKnight2915d ago

If you add this on the triggers they last forever.

http://www.amazon.com/KELUX...

Ratty2915d ago

I have a day one PS4 and that hasn't happened to me yet. I heard people claim they come off after like the first few days of playing but I don't know anything about that unless they use their sticks with their nails or use knives for some reason. Anyway I bought a more recent controller and they seem to have changed the material they used to cover the sticks. It feels a bit sturdier I suppose.

rainslacker2915d ago

It was limited to a rather large batch of the initial controllers made before launch. Some were included with the consoles, others were sold as separate accessories.

I don't know the percentages, but I'd wager most people...maybe 9 out of 10 from these early batches, do not have faulty controllers. Internet can make it seem like a lot of people having a problem is everyone having the problem...which is far from the case here.

Sony did acknowledge it though, and extended the warranty for this particular issue....although it wouldn't be applicable anymore for day one purchases.

GHOSTxx4202915d ago

Replace them with the xbox one analog sticks. Its what i did and no issues yet.

_-EDMIX-_2915d ago

Wow guys what about those that don't own the new controller?

Sony is screwing them!

I'd rather have them make no controller for all so the community won't get divided... /s

S2Killinit2915d ago

sorry didn't see the sarcasm sign, and disagreed by mistake.

rainslacker2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Both the DS4 that came with my PS4, and the 2nd one I brought on launch day both had the rubber come off during some extended DOA5:LR sessions trying to get through the training mode. Unforunately it happened after the warranty ran out.:(

While not ideal, because I feel it was a design flaw, or at least poor quality control, and should be replaced after the warranty since Sony admitted it actually being a problem, I ended up buying some cheap covers at GameStop. They came 4 to a pack, couple different colors, and cost about $5. Found them in the store, not online, so can't provide a brand name or link. While it's a way to make it usable again, I found that they actually are quite comfortable to use, and give better grip than what's on there by default. They're not concave, but have kind of a prickled surface which is milky clear instead of the color of the edges which wrap over the analog stick so they stay on pretty secure. It works better for me, because there is no slipping or travelling of my finger while using them, like I have with any other analog stick I use regardless of design.

So I would recommend them just to keep your DS4's in service, and you happen to have the faulty analog stick rubber. It's a cheap fix, but admittedly, kind of a disappointment that one would have to resort to it.

Triggers themselves I haven't had an issue with. Sounds like some simple WD-40 would solve it though.

Edit

Ozmosis posts a link to the one's i used. COuldn't find it on their site.:( I highly recommend them as a start over the more expensive options, because you'll probably find they're more than sufficient.

ITPython2915d ago

I've has my controller since launch and have averaged 3 hours a day using it since launch. The rubber on mine are still fully intact.

Although to be fair I do use a FPSFreek on my right stick, and also had one on the left stick for a little while. But the left stick has been completely exposed to my thumb for at least a year and a half now, and it shows no sign of degrading or falling off.

FITgamer2914d ago

I guess i'm one of the lucky ones. I'm still using my controller that came with the console. No issues yet.

bujasem_892914d ago

I ordered X one analogs and replaced the playstation ones. the added length gives it a bit more accuracy, and bye bye rubber deterioration I suppose.

sAVAge_bEaST2914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

same. it's B.S. the DS4 has these issues. ( I have xbone sticks in one of my controllers.) The newest camo DS4 is starting to wear. This rubber wear on the sticks is really unacceptable ..

rezzah2914d ago

Don't know how people complain about this all the time, it is as if they eat the rubber and then complain about it after.

Tru_Blu2914d ago

I had a few controllers do that to me. I kept sending them in for replacements and finally got one that hasn't had any peeling yet, knock on wood.

asadachi2913d ago

I've had my PS4 for a couple of years now too and have not had any issues with the controllers. I think you got one of the older ones as this issue is dead and buried for most.

Yi-Long2915d ago

Good to know they improved it. Just bought 3 new controllers so I'll check the back to see if they're the fixed ones...

EMPERGA2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

yes sony has sold 40 millions poor quality ds4 and finally fixed it .

nowitzki20042915d ago

lol. Poor quality? please explain this one

nowitzki20042915d ago

No need to PM me lol. What do you think is bad with the controller?

Ratty2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

It's possible some people experienced issues with theirs. I haven't experienced any with my day one DS4. Maybe I got lucky.

Edit: I do have some issues such as one of my DS4 not working properly on my PC when using bluetooth for some reason. My other controllers work well with it including the day one DS4.

cobalt2915d ago

sony sold much more controller . 40 millions with console and 100 million without console

rainslacker2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Guess I'll throw out the obligatory, it's not all of them that have the problem line.

Nice way to blow things out of proportion. I''m happy to know 10 years from now, people will be using this as an example of how Sony screwed over it's entire fan base, instead of maybe the 10% it actually affected, were addressed, and somewhat, if not minimal, recompense was offered.

jimi362914d ago

is not that all ds4 had issue . maybe about 70-80%

badz1492915d ago

I have 4 DS4 but thanks to Driveclub, I now only got 1 that is flawless. The other 3 have this trigger issue! I love you Driveclub but damn you for destroying my controllers!

Knushwood Butt2915d ago

DC didn't kill my DS4. I remember Warhawk killed at least one DS3.

Vanfernal2915d ago

I love Warhawk! So ahead of its time!

badz1492915d ago

I'm still playing DC right now and I got it at midnight launch! go figure

nitus102915d ago

If you are still under warranty and have the receipts then get them replaced.

badz1492915d ago

Nah...receipts all long gone. Didn't expect it to happen because my DS3s lasted for the whole gen. Lesson learned.

cobalt2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

what the dreamy generation for play$tation fanboys . buying 2 console per generation buying 1 controller per month playing at 900p with slideshow in 2016 . upgrade 180p in 2017 for gamer who had dream to play 4d games with 120 frame and 1080p at 1 decade ago with ps3

rainslacker2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

For me it was DOA5:LR training mode binges going for the platinum.

Just had the rubber problem, triggers work fine on all three of my DS4's.

Free_Fro2915d ago

That's nice..
I'd love if they released official drivers for PC, call it PSinput

q8kik2915d ago

It already works but I think that the devs only have to make their games recognize the DS4.
A bunch of games have DS4 support. http://pcgamingwiki.com/wik...

To my surprise Tera online is one of them.

Free_Fro2915d ago

whoa thanks for that. . I didn't even know that
I just built my PC recently ..

Skate-AK2915d ago

Get DS4 Windows. It is an amazing driver that lets you do all sorts of cool stuff with the DS4. You can even you the touchpad as a mouse. It works really well. I have been playing Simpson's Hit & Run with it. It will work for any game.

nitus102915d ago

I don't have a MS Windows operating system on my PC but my DS4 works flawlessly via USB cable (never seen a need to get a Bluetooth dongle so I can't check pairing). It also works flawlessly on my PS3 as well.

nowitzki20042915d ago

Download inputmapper if you have not already.

Ratty2915d ago

It works out of the box if you use a wire but last time I tried, the joystick's axis get inverted when using it wireless for some reason. Maybe it got fixed but using InputMapper also fixes that problem.
