After 13 years, Game Trailers is closing down.

The new came via their official Twitter account, accompanied by replies from various developers, publishers and industry figures.

This is the final step in the long transition from Viacom to Defy. On more than one occasion they got caught doctoring ps3 footage to make it look worse, or blatantly trying to pass off ps3 footage as 360 footage of the ps3 version was better.. And their apologies were soo laughable time and time again

I'm sorry to hear this. Pre-YouTube/before it became so big I used to watch a lot of videos on GameTrailers.

Bonus Round panel show covered video game news. It was topical, and approach video gaming in a grown-up manner. Not by being all stern but just by having an understanding of the business and fun side. This was because of presenter Geoff Keighley who was so natural on the show. No over the top shouting and trying hard to be seen to be fun! Just intelligent conversation.

I also like Michael Pachter in Pach Attack although I almost always disagree with his predictions, he shares some great insights into the business side of things.

Kyle Bosman good too. Singing to Shuhei Yoshida who remains stone-faced. One of the funniest gamer videos I have ever seen!

But my favourite moment from them has to be the E3 Reaction to Sony's 2015 conference when FFVII AND Shenumue III were announced!

I wish it were that simple (all fake news sites disappearing).

Unfortunately, those are the ones that often survive. Joystiq was one of the great ones. There was general Joystiq, then there were the specific sites within Joystiq per platform. They had very objective reporting, regardless of platform. It was nice. It was really my go-to site because their reviews very often aligned with my opinions of games.

It's a crying shame that, unless you're fishing for hits, you're doomed.

Yea Gametrailers really hit its peak right before Youtube officially blew up. I used to go there all the time because it was the only place to get goodd quality gaming videos but yea...Youtube has that now. They really should have transitioned over there early on in Youtube's lifetime instead because they probably could've been close I think to Gamespot's subscriber numbers. Oh well. their 360 n PS3 comparison videos were so one sided. always favouring the 360. one time they even mixed the videos and said 360 video is PS3 one and vice versa. they were caught. that's probably the time i knew about them... and i decide to forget about them. haven't been to their site for like many years.

From a person point of view (as someone who used their site a lot since 2007) the constant redesigns really turned people off. It became harder and harder to find things, sometimes even run the site.

I wasn't keen on the modern product, but that didn't matter, during the day it was my go to site. Shame to see this happen when much more toxic sites like Kotaku/Gawker remain.

Gametrailers is/was one of the best sites for original content, their weekly talk shows and podcasts were great with diverse and differently opinionated people. Also their full playthroughs were a joy to watch. Above all most of the people that worked there really enjoyed videogames and it really showed in the content that they produced.

While I agree that they have TRIED to produce better content lately, as a long time loyal GT visitor (my homepage for almost a decade) its been a sinking ship ever since Shane left and they stopped Invisible Walls. Also doesn't help that lately they've become an anti-Xbox cesspool. Ian in particular is hugely annoying.
Also Mike D. leaving was a huge blow as it meant no more "Pop Fiction".

Wish the dudes there the best of luck, especially Mike Huber. He's class.

Not surprising. They were in a "transition" from the old site to the new one for years, and they lost talent along the way. One of the main reasons for going to the site, the trailers, was negated by YouTube and Gamersyde who offer far higher quality and 60fps.

I honestly can't remember when I stopped going there. I think I just grew tired or watching videos to get the news. They used to have some original shows which were good though. But now, places like the Escapist and Rooster Teeth seem to be providing that stuff.

Think the last thing I ever watched at GT was Dead Fantasy, and they never picked it up like RT did with RWBY.

Aside from a few interesting shows throughout the past years, I'd gladly throw them in with the other hacks if I'm being honest.

They were the cream of the crop early in 7th gen's history, but they've made A LOT of disappointing moves along the way, both in regards to game criticism and site design.

-One of the first premium to introduce those pre-roll ads before EVERY video
-Site redesigns after redesign
-More than willing to peddle their 9's from anything like Resident Evil 5 to practically every Call of Duty games while that previous editorial lead was there
-Being THE PLACE where the likes of Pachter rose to prominence in gaming news/predictions

"Video game journalism" is dying. More and more small sized companies and individual personalities are what people gravitate towards. Gamespot is also nearing it's end but I think it'll live for at least another decade. IGN will survive the longest due to how big the company is but small size gaming media websites are all at risk.

Places like Kinda funny, Funhaus, angry joe and other YouTube channels are taking away the audience from these websites. Which is why more game companies are inviting Youtubers for game preview events more and more. The "Video game journalism" industry is in Flux

I loved GT, but their quality has gone so far downhill over the years. Kyle Bosman was literally the only good thing they had going for them. Some of their reviews aren't even reviews, they're just a list of features with a score at the end, no criticisms to be seen. And their video player gave me a reason to never watch any of their material on their own site...that's a big problem.

I really loved some stuff at GT like Retrospective, Timelines, Final Bosman, AVGN etc. But i must say i was not biggest fan of their reviews. It just seemed they gave every big releases a little bit too high scores, and had HUGE spoilers in their reviews. Review voice guy was epic though.

I think i stopped visiting GT during Shane Satterfields reign. That guy was ridiculous, he got outbursts in Invisible Walls if someone didn't like what he was liking. It was funny to watch a grown man cry when three other guys were roasting a game he liked. He's biased love with CoD was also annoying, he pretty much forced some GOTY awards for CoD for few years. I also liked how he did not like any complexity in games. If other guys at GT were praising some challenging gameplay elements, Shane was again going red faced with anger usually yelling "IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!". And this guy tried to shove his face in any show he could on Gametrailers. I heard that Shane got fired, but never went back. I have no idea how good or bad GT has been for last few years.

Youtube, Shane Satterfield and a little bit of Doritos Pope killed Gametrailers for me years ago.

All of you who are saying this site "obviously" fell off because you left years ago are really not seeing what's missing. While their consistency wasn't up to par, neither is any single youtuber, really.

But more importantly, Gametrailers, despite not being popular, delivered on quality. Kyle Bosman is my favorite gaming personality. Way more than any relevant youtuber. Timeline was the most exquisitely crafted lore-based video I've ever seen and completely outshines all the attempts by youtubers. And they had a good narrator while have of these youtubers are only popular because they make dumb meta-jokes or do something rather unprofessional that makes them funny and stand out. Gametrailers was quality shit, and that's what I like so I'm very sorry to see Game Trailers go.

Well, I guess the partnership with Microsoft and Viacom expired. Yes, Viacom owns GameTrailers and there was a direct partnership between them and Microsoft. That explained all the trickery and nonsense towards PS3 versions of games and BS reviews of exclusives lol. I'm glad they lost popularity and is shutting down. Lying to millions of gamers worldwide didn't help the site at all, they should've stayed independent and honest to keep fans of all platforms.
