Sony further extends PS4’s console sales lead over the 2015 holidays

"The last time we checked in on the sales battle between the big name video game consoles, Microsoft had seen its annual sales increase, but not fast enough to catch up to the still-surging PS4. The same trend was apparent in 2015's all-important holiday quarter, which saw Sony continuing to extend its sales lead over the competition."By Kyle Orland

Obviously, it took MS a whole year (all of 2015) to produce the same numbers PS4 did in the last quarter alone.

It was a slaughter and with Sony releasing a ton of big games and VR this year the lead will only continue to grow much, much wider.

How do you figure when the xbox shipped 5 to 6 million in the 4th quarter???

BitbyDeath2993d ago

Because EA already provided the total number of 55 million.

http://n4g.com/news/1856834...

Minus Sonys number of 36 million

http://n4g.com/news/1845407...

Leaves 19 million.
November 2014 MS said they almost shipped 10m

http://n4g.com/news/1620281...

Now considering that is pre-xmas it should put it around 11m by Jan 2015.

19m - 11m = 8m in 2015.

skratchy2993d ago

Like he just said. Sony is launching VR first, with a larger user base (37 million to 19 million) and Xbox One has way less exclusives coming out this year, comparatively. Makes sense to me.

Bdub20002993d ago

I liked the chart comparing X360 to X1 lifetime sales. It's good to see that the X1 sales pattern has greatly improved over the 360's at this same time, and is right on track with the PS3.

All in all, getting beat by PS4, but selling really great.

This is positive news X1 fans. Don't get caught up in the PS4 crossfire.

Sony's numbers are shipped, not in home.. Your math is wrong

EA state install base as in consoles in the home mate

Gorilla_Killa_X2993d ago

@ Mattz

Sony's number is sold-through not shipped as stated in the article and he just rounded up a tad from 35.9 million to 36 million. Get your facts straight before you comment.

1 million or more on a system with 36 million consoles in home?

dirkdady2993d ago (Edited 2993d ago )

@matt

You should try reading the article. He is right, in sonys financials they report shipped at 37.5 mil, but via holiday NPD obligatory statement they stated sold through of 35.9 mil. So as article states a lil over a mil sitting on shelves.

So bottom line quite a feat Sony was able to move as many consoles in a single quarter that is on par with Microsoft's Xbox entire 2015 sales.

S2Killinit2993d ago

@Mattz
its "sold through" that means its in people's homes.

It's incredible how the PS4 has sold up to this point, but the next 2 years will see historic sales unlike anything we've seen. With the gauntlet of big-time exclusives, AAA indies, VR, and Sony's 3rd party relationships the PS4 is only trending up.

Consider that PS4 only recently unlocked the 7th. With the 7th core unlocked PS4 should see a performance boost adding yet another reason why sales should increase.

I honestly think 2016 is too packed with games on PS4, certain games will get overshadowed and it's unfortunate for the developer. However, the logjam of quality games will only increase sales of the PS4. Once Uncharted, NMS, Last Guardian, Horizon, Gran Turismo, Ratchet, GR2, SFV, and PSVR hit...it's going to feel like 1 long holiday season for PS4. It's just beginning folks.

S2Killinit2993d ago (Edited 2993d ago )

Yup. Sony consoles tend to go into overdrive right about when MS consoles seem to do the opposite (although maybe MS will change that). From here on out is traditionally the time that Sony starts to pump out its most memorable games of the generation. 2016 seems set to follow that trend with all the games coming out for PS4 this year.

Looks like it's only growing faster as time passes: http://cdn.arstechnica.net/...

And 2016 will be a great year for PS4 in terms of games, so it should go up even more.

pupa2993d ago

At least according to that graph it competes with the ps3.

FriedGoat2993d ago

yeah but ps3 was SOLD THROUGH, MS hasn't released sold through, nobody has any clue how many xbox ones are in peoples homes, but i'm damn sure it's less than the shipped figures they used to give.

It's be SHIPPING in comparable numbers to Xbox 360, I wouldn't be surprised if it was SELLING less though.

freshslicepizza2993d ago

electronic arts would be using figures they could sell to and in that case they said 55 million systems combined. that would mean 19 million xbox one systems. is that a terrible number?

i find it amusing how so many want to continually discredit the xbox one sales just because the ps4 is selling so well. in context it really isn't selling that badly and is close to the ps3's sales (according to this article) which now some also don't like it being compared to. hilarious.

Herbalistic2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

The gap will only increase being as Xbox doesn't have appeal outside of US/UK..There is nothing that Microsoft could do in terms of market share. They just need to focus on keeping their fans happy.

Kingthrash3602994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

Seem they are losing appeal in the US too. Seeing it released halo 5 and had the "best Xbox holiday lineup in history" and lost the holidays. To Sony, who had no big holiday releases other than a uncharted remake. Where In 2014 xbox won the holidays with a remaster of halo.

IamTylerDurden12993d ago

I expect PS4 to avg 2 millions units per month from March to January.

I expect PS4 to sell over 20 million units in 2016. My guess is 21 million. By the end of 2017 PS4 will be over 80 million sold.

By the time PS5 launches PS4 will be over 100 million sold. 2 years after PS5 launches the PS4 will have outsold the PS2 in lifetime sales and will officially be the most successful console of all-time.

FallenAngel19842994d ago

The gap is steadily growing between the PS3 and the XO as well. At the end of their second years, PS3 was at 21.3 million while XO was at around 19.1-19.4 million or so. XO being about 2 million behind PS3 becomes really jarring once you remember that XO sold much more at launch compared to PS3.

This 2 million gap is only going to increase because the PS3 was a much more globally appealing product, thus it was able to consistently have higher weekly worldwide sales than XO in the same timeframe.

YinYangGaming2994d ago

Outside of US/UK Xbox has no chance of getting near PlayStation, the brand just has so much more appeal worldwide

Used to love this one, but X-Men Legends 1 and 2 will always be my favorites, especially Rise of Apocalypse. Would pay some good money to play it today with online multiplayer, back then I had no way to get a modem

RavenWolfx3h ago

Yeah, I loved the Legends games so much.

ZeekQuattro11h ago

I remember buying them dirt cheap on the PS4 and then a few days later I read they were delisted. I was wondering why the bundle was price so low and got my answer when that happened.

Knightofelemia9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Sad to say this is one game franchise next to the Xmen that needs a sequel. I use to play the hell out of Xmen Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Was great when my cousin had the OG Xbox play with four other people and then playing online. Great games glad to see it reappear even though I own the discs love the mechanics of this game.

Terry_B8h ago

It got a sequel..but for dumbass #reasons as a switch exclusive.

shinoff21838h ago

It looked so horrible to. They should've kept it similar to the first two.

Asplundh8h ago

Because Nintendo funded it, they did the same for Bayonetta.

Knightofelemia8h ago

I totally forgot about the Switch sequel.

jukins8h ago

Misleading. This page is whats available for people who owned the game prior to delisting.

The first game was the best imo.
