Sony further extends PS4’s console sales lead over the 2015 holidays

It was a slaughter and with Sony releasing a ton of big games and VR this year the lead will only continue to grow much, much wider.

I liked the chart comparing X360 to X1 lifetime sales. It's good to see that the X1 sales pattern has greatly improved over the 360's at this same time, and is right on track with the PS3.

You should try reading the article. He is right, in sonys financials they report shipped at 37.5 mil, but via holiday NPD obligatory statement they stated sold through of 35.9 mil. So as article states a lil over a mil sitting on shelves.

So bottom line quite a feat Sony was able to move as many consoles in a single quarter that is on par with Microsoft's Xbox entire 2015 sales.

It's incredible how the PS4 has sold up to this point, but the next 2 years will see historic sales unlike anything we've seen. With the gauntlet of big-time exclusives, AAA indies, VR, and Sony's 3rd party relationships the PS4 is only trending up.

Consider that PS4 only recently unlocked the 7th. With the 7th core unlocked PS4 should see a performance boost adding yet another reason why sales should increase.

I honestly think 2016 is too packed with games on PS4, certain games will get overshadowed and it's unfortunate for the developer. However, the logjam of quality games will only increase sales of the PS4. Once Uncharted, NMS, Last Guardian, Horizon, Gran Turismo, Ratchet, GR2, SFV, and PSVR hit...it's going to feel like 1 long holiday season for PS4. It's just beginning folks.

Yup. Sony consoles tend to go into overdrive right about when MS consoles seem to do the opposite (although maybe MS will change that). From here on out is traditionally the time that Sony starts to pump out its most memorable games of the generation. 2016 seems set to follow that trend with all the games coming out for PS4 this year.

electronic arts would be using figures they could sell to and in that case they said 55 million systems combined. that would mean 19 million xbox one systems. is that a terrible number?

I expect PS4 to avg 2 millions units per month from March to January.

I expect PS4 to sell over 20 million units in 2016. My guess is 21 million. By the end of 2017 PS4 will be over 80 million sold.

By the time PS5 launches PS4 will be over 100 million sold. 2 years after PS5 launches the PS4 will have outsold the PS2 in lifetime sales and will officially be the most successful console of all-time.

The gap is steadily growing between the PS3 and the XO as well. At the end of their second years, PS3 was at 21.3 million while XO was at around 19.1-19.4 million or so. XO being about 2 million behind PS3 becomes really jarring once you remember that XO sold much more at launch compared to PS3.

This 2 million gap is only going to increase because the PS3 was a much more globally appealing product, thus it was able to consistently have higher weekly worldwide sales than XO in the same timeframe.

yes and no. when you dominate the market and then try and sell a $600 console then it's great to have some serious competition. it's also nice to not have a dictatorship attitude and tell consumers what they want and don't want without asking them. ea access is one example for the ps4, charging to play online on the xbox, and telling 3rd party how many games you can release on the snes.

it's never good to have control of the market which can and will influences decisions without the consumers approval.

You do realize the PS3 launch price started at $500 right? Unless you were 5 at the time, it's not that hard to remember. Especially considering that it was the cheapest blu-ray player at the time (with blu-ray players at $1000 or more), had built in HDMI port, built in wifi, bluetooth (something one console still doesn't have).

I agree though. It's good to have competition when Playstation is the leading brand. But it's pointless if the competition is out of touch with the industry.

yes it was $500 for the 20gb model and it did not have wifi built in. sony also stopped production of that model and said the 60gb model was more popular. who knows if that was really true or they lost more money compared to the 60gb model (which sony also lost money on and sold at a loss).

$500 is still a lot of money back in 2006 for a game console.

The only reason MS backtracked on that (well they did still force that camera on day one x1 buyers) is because they were getting pummeled on pre-order sales because of it.

PS1 domination lead to the PS2 era which is perhaps the best era in gaming.

The PS3 was Crazy Ken wanting to do some crazy stuff and set about over engineering it hence the cost. The cell, Bluray. Ken wanted something of a supercomputer with unlimited space for build gaming experiences like no other. Given that he created both the PS1 and PS2. I believe Sony let him do whatever he wanted. Also it didn't help he didn't consult people like Mark did with the PS4.

Still to this day I will never forget the first time I unboxed my fatty 60giger. It was like alien tech for its time.

I still maintained that it was the best 650 bucks I spent. The design/aesthetics was like something out of a future mag.

The HDIM, wifi, Blu ray was stunning since I just bought a 1080p Sony as well.

sony dominated 2 generations in a row and the ps1 and ps2 cost $299. then they decided to come out with a game console for $499 and $599. nobody else could have gotten away with that. sony also have such an influence in the industry that they could come out with hardware that forced game developers to relearn how to develop games with things like the emotion engine on the ps2 and ps3's different architecture. sony enjoys proprietary hardware to get developers to learn to make games for them only. it wasn't until the xbox 360 and the major dent they put on the ps3 in north america that forced sony to finally make hardware that was easy to develop for.

the neo geo and 3do both failed commercially at their prices for a mainstream product. sony overcame this by having such a large loyal fanbase.

nintendo had major influence during that time they could force third party developers to release a certain amount of game and also had to go through nintendo's seal of approval. i already pointed out sony's influence and microsoft was doing very well in the us market (the largest region for console sales) and followed that up by drastic changes they wanted to put forward with the xbox one and it's drm features.

look at what is happening with apple and how itunes gets exclusive deals, is that beneficial to the consumer? that's why i brought up how consumers can be taken out of certain decisions and force consumers to go with them if they want to get these products. it happens a lot in gaming too with exclusive deals. do you want nintendo to rule and have them censor games like mortal kombat and only be able to play the censored version? do you want microsoft to rule and have games like tomb raider only available on the xbox and charging to play people online? or sony deciding for you what services like ea access you can and can't have or games like destiny getting exclusive dlc?

too much influence does indeed impact us all. so be careful in suggesting you want one to dominate.

Tell that to the PS2 which dominated the market, yet people refer to it as a golden age of gaming. You know what we got from the PS2 dominating the market? An abundance of spectacular games and a ridiculous amount of content and support.

The PS2 was dominant and it was good for gamers, the PS3 was an entirely different ball of wax. The 360 was out for a year before the PS3 launched, the price was high bc of the brand new blu-ray technology, intricate Cell processor, and built-in backwards compatibility. Some would argue that it was a good thing, the PS3 was more popular than the 360. Tbh, the PS3 was worth the price based on the blu-ray player and bc alone. Blu-ray was incredibly expensive at the time.

At this rate, it will easily surpass Halo 5, which is basically Microsoft's biggest game that will exist on their platform. I'm honestly not surprised PS4 is pulling ahead so far. Sony has secured the best console this gen with the largest variety of games on the market, and the most new and innovative gaming features available on console. Off to a rocketing start with The Witness, Firewatch and Gravity Rush Remastered. Next up is Street Fighter V, Ratchet & Clank and the aforementioned Drake's End. The number of exclusives PS4 has this year is practically unbelievable. It's an embarrassment of riches and a landslide to whoever is competing.

That is WITHOUT having mentionined the illusive PlayStation VR, its games and opportunities it's gonna offer us. Such exciting times ahead for PS4 owners. Good going Sony!

Xbox is in north America and that's it's place. And parts of Europe. PlayStation is worldwide. Yea sales will be better on PlayStation overall. That was is and has always been quite obvious.

That being said.. the fanboyish remarks on why the Xbox is behind are childish and whether or not it matters or doessnt matter is childish too. I can think of dozens of food products that are only available in certain countries and don't have that global exposure like pasta does but it doesn't make those products any less delicious or even better then pasta. Sales figures are always great for fans to tout their systems success. For me, its always been about the games. In this case, exclusives are what differentiate the two, along with online perks and DLC etc. So that aside, consider each consoles attachment ratio. That would be an interesting figure to also analyse. Many folks say giving away a PS4 with every Sony TV doesn't count. Well, it actually counts for a Console sale, but it would pull down the games attachment ratio if that owner only ever uses it as a BR player.

I think personally, Kudos to all for such a strong industry that's growing despite economic world chaos. That's a plus.

Also, Kudos to MS for being considered the worst company on earth back with the whole DRM issue and always online saga. To turn things around and eclipse that of last generations sales is a true feat. Recovering from damage control is never easy.

Finally to those who assume Sony is what makes the industry so great. Think again. With no competition from MS or Nintendo, its just a matter of time before corporate greed takes over. We need competition, its a good thing for consumers, pure n simple. I think the competition and industry is solid right now, and I hope it continues to be.

Regardless of all that, ps4 fanboys think 'vr is going to be the key for the console but really a lot of people are seeing it as a more posh and more expensive version of .playstations.move and Kinect. Really both playstations move and Kinect were never fully utilised, gamers never got fully behind it. Why didn't we get fully behind it and devs stopped creating the titles they were promising, because after the first God knows how many titles, sales were that low because they knew gamers didn't want to get off there butts and move and interact with move and Kinect. So what makes people think 've is going to be any different, we've prooven as gamers we don't want to exercise,move and get off our butts, so vr I think won't be anything dramatic for us, people will soon lose interest as they did with move and Kinect, the fascination will wear off and you will all be back to controllers.

If anything Microsoft mite of made the smart move by staying away from it, but just to support some developers and games, ms may have just saved themselfs a ton of money.

In my eye I like the look of the hololens better, rts games would be ace on AR and hololens, but still the price tags are way to much for most people. Because price tags for most people at start, company's in vr and ar mite have to end up dropping prices faster than they think. It is a very risky business as playstations move and Microsoft Kinect have already prooved.

Why does everyone want to pronounce the XB1 dead because the PS4 is selling early twice as well worldwide?? North America they are nearly neck and neck. Japan XB1 is non-existent and Europe nearly 3 to 1 sales. I think the PS4 will sell around 120 to 130 million. The XB1 60 million. Does that mean my PS4 is better and the XB1 suck? Um, no. I love my XB1. I also like seamless integration with my 5 TB external hard drive. My PS4 I upgraded my internal to 2 TB. That means I have to watch my internal hard space on my PS4 for Sony exclusives only. I'm NOT going uninstall and install my games and DLC every time when my measly 2TB HD is full. ARGH SONY!! Too bad for them and most all my 3rd parties will go to XB1. I buy a ton of games so I am not playing Sony's stupid hard drive limitations!! Good thing I don't think my XB1 is inferior just because the PS4 has a bit better hardware. I love my XB1...and while infuriating I love my PS4 too. Well yes. I think it's reduced presence in everywhere, but America will take its toll. While they are very close here in America, I think the PS4 will likely SLOWLY widen the gap even in the US. This all leads to a much greater PS4 market share and a diminished XB1 in lifetime sales versus last generation. It's possible for XB1 to make it to 70-75 million. This could hinge on Nintendo's next machine further eroding XB1's marketplace. It's just a guess. We will see. I certainly would like to see the XB1 do better!

Compared to last gen, the xbox One is doing better than the xbox 360 but not than the PS3. That is really sad. Sony really hit the ball this generation and with PSVR releasing this year, there is simply no competition for them on the console market.

So not only is it a system that can play multiplatform games it can also play exclusives as well. Bloodborne is an example of a very good PlayStation exclusives with other good looking exlusives like Uncharted 4 or Horizon coming out this year. If you like smaller titles the game Rime by Tequila works looks very good. I would say Wild as well but I'm not sure if its coming out this year.

Why does everyone want to pronounce the XB1 dead because the PS4 is selling early twice as well worldwide?? North America they are nearly neck and neck. Japan XB1 is non-existent and Europe nearly 3 to 1 sales. I think the PS4 will sell around 120 to 130 million. The XB1 60 million. Does that mean my PS4 is better and the XB1 suck? Um, no. I love my XB1. I also like seamless integration with my 5 TB external hard drive. My PS4 I upgraded my internal to 2 TB. That means I have to watch my internal hard space on my PS4 for Sony exclusives only. I'm NOT going uninstall and install my games and DLC every time when my measly 2TB HD is full. ARGH SONY!! Too bad for them and most all my 3rd parties will go to XB1. I buy a ton of games so I am not playing Sony's stupid hard drive limitations!! Good thing I don't think my XB1 is inferior just because the PS4 has a bit better hardware. I love my XB1...and while infuriating I love my PS4 too. Oh I nearly love my Wii U most because...well...Nintendo games are best;)

IMHO , Xbox One is doing great... only reason PS4 has a huge lead because it took a huge chunk of Nintendo's fanbase ... not microsoft's

Actually it took part of Microsofts fanbase as well. If you look at the raw numbers the X1 is tracking behind the 360 in several places like Asia or Europe. The reason why is because those consumers are buying PS4s instead which explains why the PS4 is doing better than the PS3 at the same time.

Nintendo fans didn't exactly abandon the Wii for the PS4 like your claiming. Those people that did were mostly the casuals but then again those people migrated to smartphone and tablets.

It's obvious by the comments that gamers care about sale's numbers but don't voice your opinion on the matter you might get some fanboy's but hurt. Anyway go to see that consoles are thriving despite some analyst predicting doom and gloom.

Bring on that VR baby! I cant wait. Sony is killing it and has their hands in everything, offering us innovative hardware and software and new ways to play while maintaining their quality ips on PS4.

Im glad Playstation division is doing so good and Sony as a whole is putting "Playstation" on the forefront and it is now the face of the company, that only means that Playstation is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Its nice to know these figures however this doesn't affect my gaming one bit. Both systems go down as successful units. I tend to prefer the less popular system because it keeps the company on there toes with support.
