Can We Please Calm Down About Twilight Princess HD’s Graphics?

Nintendo Enthusiast:

While the majority of the fanbase seems excited for the remaster, there’s one glaring issue that’s continuously being brought up no matter where you look: the graphics. Quite a number of people are very unhappy with the title’s graphical quality, saying that it doesn’t look that much different. It’s also given the ‘Nintendo Haters Squad’ even more reason to continue their relentless pummel on the poor Wii U.

While I do understand this qualm, after taking things into consideration and doing just a bit of research, I’ve come to the conclusion that in the midst of all these complaints—there really isn’t that much of a point to them.

I think it looks fine. Don't see what all the fuss is about.

DarXyde2999d ago

Yeah, nevermind the fact that it's an incredibly memorable game and arguably one of the best games of last generation or the almost certainty that it'll actually run properly at launch.

Do you even game for fun?

LOL_WUT2999d ago

Nintendo could've gave it the Wind Waker treatment. Or better yet save it for the NX which is releasing sometime in 2016. Either way i'm still buying it. ;)

kitsune4512999d ago

It doesn't look bad, it looks like an HD remaster. That's fine, but most remaster are either less than retail price, pack multiple games, or both. Uncharted Collection was $60 for three games and Master Chief Collection was $60 for four. Wind Waker was a complete remake and justified the price, but not Twilight Princess.

If they'd have done a Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword collection then it'd be worth $60. But one remaster for $60 is unheard of. Okami, Resident Evil 1, and many other remasters are $20 or less.

Does mikeslemonade even like or play video games, or does he just come onto this site to make fun of every game in existence?

What a pathetic life.

TP is one of my least favorite LoZ games but it still looks pretty good for an HD remake of a Gamecube game.

Not as good as Wind Waker but still decent enough.

mikeslemonade2998d ago

TP was too primitive for me to play. It was too ambitious. Y'all can't take negativity, not my fault. I'm looking forward to playing Zelda on the NX. Y'all are just stuck in the past playing these old games.

DragoonsScaleLegends2998d ago

The only reason Nintendo games look ok on Wii U is the unrealistic art style(Which I prefer) but when you see realistic games the outdated Wii U hardware really shows. I mean even games like Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 that everyone acted like they had amazing graphics, I couldn't help but notice the horrible anti-aliasing. They really were nothing amazing except for the art style and Nintendo games finally being in HD.

Blastoise2998d ago (Edited 2998d ago )

It's a legitimate critisism. Nintendo are charging full price for this (with an Amiibo).

Nothing is being remade. It's a port in HD. People called Sony out when they ported PS2 games in HD and charged for them on PS4. So why should Nintendo get a free pass when it costs 4x the price? Just because "omgz Twilight princess my fav Zelda". This costs the same price as Wind Waker HD

It's nothing to do with the "Nintendo haters squad" it's the Zelda fans that should be the ones calling this out

garrettbobbyferguson2998d ago (Edited 2998d ago )

Twilight Princess generally looked mediocre. The color tones they used throughout the game is directly responsible for this. If they would have used some different colors for their environments, the game would have been much much prettier. Graphically, it looks fine. Just those damn colors.

@drpepperdude

That's why art style is king. Okami isn't some graphically complex game. I'm certain the polys used on many objects and that game is low. But it's described as beautiful because of the cell shading used. It's the same reason why Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World despite missing effects such as anti-aliasing look so good. Because of the art style.

BrandanT2998d ago

How do you call something primitive and too ambitious at the same time? That's an oxymoron - it doesn't make sense in your case at all. It makes your arguments trash if you can't even form proper criticisms; or in your case insults.

mikeslemonade2998d ago

^Too ambitious on the limited hardware specs. Making it look too primitive. Windwaker is fine because of cel shading but TP looks to wide open and bland. The Wii couldn't handle it and this remaster looks lame.

Game's 50 bucks though, just seems like a lot.

pcz2998d ago

people expect more from nintendo, and rightly so.

what should have been a more substantial remaster, has turned out to be little more than an unscaled port with seemingly the bare minimum put into bringing it up to date. and just to remind you, 10 years has passed since it was first released. it should have been treated with more respect.

yes, to be fair nintendo have done the right thing with the marketing and physical presentation of the package, giving it a special edition, but the product itself is underwhelming. its not worth the full price they are asking.

i would have liked to have seen improvements to the lighting, improved character models, improvements to the environments (ie higher polygon count,) updated effects etc at least it would then be worthy of a full price and fitting for the 10th anniversary.

KilKarazy2999d ago

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding but you're defending a game that's backwards compatible and being released as an "HD" remake without better graphics? Why?

specialguest2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

Explain to me how the graphics is not better? It's simply and HD bump up, not a remaster like TLOU or FFX.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

You gotta be blind if you think the HD version is not an improvement over the original.

GordonKnight2998d ago

standard controls (not forced motion controls), gamepad controls, and of course the amiibo. This HD remake is actual the GameCube version, which isn't BC. I've never played this version.

pcz2998d ago (Edited 2998d ago )

Why do people keep saying remaster? Is it just a pretentious term for port? Because when you take off the Nintendo tinted glasses, that is all it is- a port.

Big deal it's now a little sharper, hardly fits my definition of a remaster. This so called remaster probably took one afternoon to develop.

That's £49 please.

What a rip off

Just to be clear, my idea of a remaster would be that the remaster would be substantially improved over the original- justifying the term re master. It should be like night and day. Original and remaster. Unlike this where you have to strain your eyes to see a difference.

Its not a remaster. Its a glorified port

Graphics really don't mean much with Nintendo games to me. Gameplay is often top notch thankfully

Legion212998d ago

Well when you release an HD remake of an almost 10 years old game for the same price as new games I think it's fair to expect vast improvements in the visual department. The visual are better but have been so much more.

higgins782998d ago (Edited 2998d ago )

Graphics AND gameplay, which is good, because played today - both Wii U AND 3DS offers both in abundance. It's like people are more interested in how a game looks in a lab under heavy analysis AND only if said game strives for semi-realistic graphics. Personally - and thank God everybody is different, I have always sided with Nintendo's art style.

MilkMan2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

Looks to me they did a bang up job of cleaning, adding lighting and shadows to the textures and characters. The wii and the GameCube version by comparison are muddy and dark as f***

What's the problem?

jcnba282998d ago

The problem is that this is Nintendo - they will get criticised no matter what they do.

I for one cannot wait to reply this masterpiece in HD.

higgins782998d ago

So true. Take the Wii U for example - and MANY do. SM3DW, MK8, Smash, DK:TF, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, etc, etc. A lot of games the pinnacle of their series, but is the focus on this? NO. Instead its, but this, but that, but whatever. Seriously, enjoy said console for what it is, not what it is not.

Where Are The Wind Waker And Twilight Princess Switch Remasters At?

Nintendo is a weird company. It has the most illustrious legacy of any single company in the medium and seldom chooses to take advantage of that fact. Countless classics are confined to their original platforms or only available through outdated retail models or a cheeky bit of emulation.

I want a Twilight Princess HD for the Switch I would day one it right now.

GoodGuy09582d ago

This holiday would've been great and it would've calmed my hunger for tears of the kingdom. It supposedly exists but why has it taken this long I wonder. Here's hoping it still releases before totk, maybe a trailer at the game awards and a shadow drop.

Double_O_Revan582d ago

I wouldn't hope too hard. The Metroid Prime Trilogy or even just Prime 1 remaster supposedly exists and has been complete for several years now. Either Nintendo are evil bastards, or everyone claiming it's existence is full of shit. Frankly, I believe both scenarios to be true.

Immagaiden581d ago

Wii U was such a great to play every 3D Zelda game and various 2D ones as well

It'd be nice if Switch caught up to that wealth of legacy content

Inverno581d ago

Booted up WW HD through emulation on Deck. Forgot how much I like that game, it's so charming with how expressive Link is. Ninty has taken too long.

ZeekQuattro581d ago

Nintendo wants the focus on tears of the kingdom. Though with these year Zelda old rumors I question if the collection ever existed for the Switch. Much like the Prime Trilogy that evolved into a remake or remaster of just Prime 1 in recent months.

GaboonViper613d ago

I am a huge Zelda fan and love them all, but for me Ocarina Of Time is the greatest and my second all time favourite game after Final Fantasy VII.

LoveSpuds612d ago (Edited 612d ago )

You sir, have good taste in games :)

I also love all of the Zelda games but I adore Windwaker (Specifically the HD version on WiiU) most of all. It is a close run thing with Breath of the Wild though.

Special mention to Cadence of Hyrule too, what an awesome spin off title that was!

GaboonViper611d ago

Cheers Spuds, yep i love Windwaker too, beautiful artstyle, and i loved sailing and finding all the secrets out there.

blackbeld611d ago

Agreed. For me top 3 of all time is.

1. ocarina of time
2. Final fantasy Vll
3. MGS1

GaboonViper611d ago

Brilliant top 3, would love a MGS1 remake that has been rumoured.

LoveSpuds611d ago

Yup, hard to argue with that top 3 squire, some quality games right there!

-Foxtrot613d ago

Oh gee can't imagine what Number 1 is

....

A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker etc is better than Breath of the Wild.

lockedongamer1613d ago

I respectfully disagree, but they're all great games.

porkChop612d ago

I think it really depends on what you're looking for. If you want a traditional Zelda game then OoT or WW would be better to you. But if you want a Zelda game that really leans into adventure and exploration, and if you want intelligent systems/logic, BotW would be the better game.

I enjoy both. I understand why some people aren't fond of it but for me it was a breath of fresh air that I really needed. I'd become so burnt out on unimaginative games and BotW sort of made me appreciate games again, as weird as that may sound.

godofboobees612d ago

Those are not traditional Zelda games

Crows90611d ago

Right...so let's pretend ocarina of time didnt have exploration, secret dungeons and other secrets. Complex boss mechanics and exploration rewards. At least a traditional Zelda has dungeons.

porkChop611d ago

What point are you attempting to make? At no point did I say that OoT didn't have any of that. However, the level of exploration and sense of adventure are vastly different between OoT and BotW.

Brazz612d ago

Breath of the Wild is overrated as shot, Wind waker is much better.

P_Bomb612d ago

I’m a Link to the Past guy.

MadLad612d ago

Majora's Mask still holds as my favorite to this day, despite being the black sheep of the series.

pietro1212612d ago

I love them all, but Wind Walker, Link to the Past and Minish Cap are my favorites

John_McClane611d ago

Link to the Past was so, so good! Those chickens though! 🤣
