I hope they do it I'm a child of the 80's and I love Sega and I would buy another one of their consoles in a heartbeat

noksucow733002d ago

Exactly. Sega fanboy here since the Sega Master System. Sega just had a certain appeal back then. At least to me they did. I'm talking about Sega on Sega hardware. Hated to see them leave the hardware business. Still play my Genesis, 32x, Saturn, and Dreamcast! !

Gazondaily3001d ago

Ohhh shieeeeeee!

Make it happen Sega!

Why o why3001d ago

Loved my dreamcast

Got an import Japanese version from a place called cew when they only used to have 2 stores in the whole country.. Back then I was ignorant or just to young to understand the politics and reasons why it didn't last.

hiredhelp3001d ago (Edited 3001d ago )

I remember my first Sega master system it had built in alex the kid i was gutted cos i wanted sonic.
It wasnt bad machine i was in my teens then,I remember a freind wanted swap it for his mega drive hour later he wanted to swap back. Deals a deal where i come from love the mega drive always on i. The genisis (in uk it was the name for the handheld mega drive.) was a powerhouse of a hand held despite it looking like a brick not as portable as a gameboy but true 16bit in your hand.
I didnt get on with the 32x but loved my mega drive till I met The Daddy DREAMCAST..
Oh had megacd mad dog plus others.

Mkai283001d ago

Hmmm, both you and the guy above must be around my age then, how many of you remember the card slot in the master system. Then you place a card in the slot and turns out to be a game?

bf0007779663001d ago

it is highly un likely, at least in near future, because it will only get smashed by the ps4 when it comes out just like what has happened in 2000

Ashunderfire863001d ago

Dreamcast to this day was my favorite system, and I was crushed that it didn't last long! It was the first to go multiplayer online, the graphics on games like NBA, NFL 2K, and Baseball look so real I thought I was watching real sport games on TV. Dreamcast was the first to show that realistic graphics beyond N64 and PS1! For some reason I still don't see that realistic look in a Madden game, that just look too cartoonish. Sonic Adventures 1 and 2, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Quake Arena 3, Powerstone, and so much more really made the Dreamcast! But Dreamcast was killed by several things like bootlegging, HD ports of old games, EA sports dropping out, PS2 competitor, and word has it that you can make a bomb or some type of weapon out of the Dreamcast. If they can bring back the Dreamcast it must have 4K gaming as a standard for the next generation after PS4, and Xbox One. But if you think about Xbox really was the spiritual successor to Dreamcast, because most of the Dreamcast team at the time went to Microsoft to help create the Xbox console, but still nothing is like the Dreamcast. So Sega bring us back that Dream machine we all know and love very much! Just maybe they would finally have a great Sonic game on bar with Mario games!

awi59513001d ago

@Mkai28

Hey man i had the transforming robot card slot game with my master system it was good though. I forgot what it was called but it was like a R-type clone but it was a great clone i played the crap out of it. Oh yeah do any of you remember the Great side scroll beat-emUp RPG that came on 2 cartridges Spellcaster???

Kingdomcome2473001d ago

@Ash- It was an interesting partnership. Microsoft also helped in creating the Dreamcast. There was a book written about Microsoft and Sega's partnership, I believe. It's pretty interesting stuff.

Jyndal3001d ago

The problem is that with the last 3 systems you mentioned, if Sega didn't feel they were the market leaders, they'd just drop the system and move on the the next thing. Dreamcast was awesome, but when PS2 blew them away, they just gave up. Saturn was dropped after the PS1 began dominating the console market. The 32X....well, that was a bad idea from the start.

Will it be the same this time around?

indysurfn3001d ago

I'm more of a child of the late 90's - early 2000's and the Dreamcast was technically my first gaming console that I had. Still have my Dreamcast from 1999. Love it to death. I wouldn't be the gamer I am today without it.

_-EDMIX-_3001d ago

NICE! Though Dreamcast isn't my first console, its the first console I bought with big boy money for being good and the first console I owned myself vs the whole family or any of my sisters! lol

One of my favorite consoles. I own like 3!

Paytaa3001d ago

@EDMIX It's certainly one of my favorites too. The Dreamcast was like my official entry into gaming. I mean I started with Sonic 1-3 and Super Mario but it wasn't until I played Sonic Adventure, Hydro Thunder, MK Gold, Expendable, Power Stone, House of The Dead, etc. that really kick started me as a gamer.

I would happily welcome Sega back into the console market as long as they are in it for the long term and actually compete with the big boys again. Hell, they could even forget what Playstation and Xbox are doing and make a console that directly competes with Nintendo like the good ole days again.

Dreamcast 2 rumors to me have been similar to Half Life 3 rumors. I mean I literally thought they were going to announce something on 9/9/09 for it's 10 year anniversary...just a tad bit naive lol

Good-Smurf3002d ago (Edited 3002d ago )

I didn't own any of their console until 2014 starting with Saturn and Dreamcast and then 2015 a Mega Drive 2 loved all of them!
Another console from SEGA would be a big surprise to me!

* I've actually been thinking about re-buying a Dreamcast to play Shenmue and some 2D fighters as well as a couple other games on.

I have my Dreamcast still but it doesn't read discs anymore. Such an awesome system.

I'd definitely buy a Dreamcast 2. I forgot this was still maybe a thing.

Retroman3001d ago (Edited 3001d ago )

@ 3-4-5

go to youtube type in : "how to clean Dreamcast lazer disc eye", or if you can't find anyone on youtube .......... clean lazer disc eye with Q-tip and rubbing alcohol let it dry . eye prabaly not working becuz of lack of use and sitting over the years try youtube first.
my phat ps2 is alive once again .

im sure shemue and those 2D fighter games will appreciate being back in action .

3-4-53001d ago (Edited 3001d ago )

Appreciate the tips.

Actually it's that when the lid is closed it won't read. Years ago I was able to tape it mostly shut and get it to play but that hasn't worked in years.

* I think it's the mechanics lid thing.

I recently watched a video on how to fix that, maybe like 3-4 days ago, so I might try that out. I'm just nervous about taking it apart and ruining something else but I really want to play Shenmue so bad.

* I think the lid issue has to do with the arm not catching on the gear that is at the bottom or back of the system.

* https://www.youtube.com/wat...
^ Found this video. I'm going to try and see if it works, but this is the problem I was having.

Haven't played my Dreamcast in like 10 years because of it.

3-4-53001d ago

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

^ Also this other fix as well.

I'm going to try them both. If it works, I'll have to rebuy Shenmue again.....don't think I still have it.

noksucow733001d ago

@ areswarlord

I'm a child of the 50's and experience first Dreamcast and loved Sega games.
it would be interesting to see if Sega turn gaming around with Dreamcast 2 or would they act lazy hop on open world military, zombie, fps only concept bandwagon which is over SATURATED!! now.

GamingIVfun3001d ago

Still Have my original day one Dreamcast and about 30 games for it, would love to see a successor to the original, would be another day one purchase for me.

showtimefolks3001d ago

i don't know if the gaming space is big enough to have 4 home consoles. i always thought the best idea was for MS to buy the dreamcast name and carry on

if sega were to release their dreamncast 2 console, i would support it over anything ms or nintendo related. first choice would always be a playstation console

C'mon...when has any of these retro consoles ever taken off?

Bobafret3002d ago

The pitch isn't for a retro console, but an all new one.

Double_O_Revan3002d ago

But who's going to support it? The WiiU is already the red headed step child the gaming world and that's backed by Nintendo. But 3rd party support is terrible.

If this new Dreamcast model can't compare with PS4 & Xbox One specs, it won't get the support it needs.

I applaud them for trying, but I dont see it taking off.

MachuchalBrotha3163001d ago

@azshorty, let me just give you a quick example of a possible Sega launch Lineup.

Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza, Virtua Tennis, Daytona USA, Crazy Taxi, Shining Force, Phantasy Star, Bayonetta and Nights....are you kidding me. And soo much more. Bring it on SEGA!

_-EDMIX-_3001d ago

@AZ- "If this new Dreamcast model can't compare with PS4 & Xbox One specs, it won't get the support it needs"

I wouldn't say all that, if its architecture is PC friendly like XONE and PS4, it will likely get support.

I don't think Wii U's issue as its power, I think it was its design. It was hard and developers talked about how expensive it was due to how hard it was to work on the platform, consider some titles even went to PS3, 360 etc in favor of Wii U, thus I don't think its a power issue, it might be a ease of use issue.

if Dreamcast 2 is made with 3rd party support in mind in regards to ease of design, I feel it could work.

I mean I don't see it killing PS or XB any time soon, but I see Sega making a great return on it if done right. What killed Sega was lack of 3rd party support, if they can get that, they can very much still be a Sleeping Giant.

Jyndal3001d ago

@MachuchalBrotha316 it wasn't lack of 3rd party that killed them. If that was the case, Nintendo would have went the same route. What crippled Sega was that they wouldn't stick it out when other consoles came along. How many games were made for the 32X? How many years did the Saturn get to shine before they began developing for the Dreamcast and canceling titles in development for it?

Sega's 1st party exclusives were more than a match for anything Sony, Nintendo or MS could bring to the table. Sega just didn't have the fortitude to stick it out and the consumer base knew this due to their track record.

I'll have to see this console do some serious sales over the next couple of years before I gamble my money on it.

Neo Geo gold is going pretty good. The one's actually backed by the original manufacturer tend to do well, but they don't make a lot of headlines, and tend to sell to a niche group.

gangsta_red2998d ago

Most definitely and those consoles while they are awesome tend to fade fast.

I actually thought this was going to be a retro console but I guess not. Which means more than definitely will not come into reality since Sega is not even fully backing it AND even if it did there is no way a fourth console could survive in this market.

As much as I would love a return of the glory of Dreamcast, it just won't happen.

rainslacker2998d ago

I think there may be licensing issues with a retro console, although, if it's backed by Sega, and has the proper hardware then I suppose it's possible. Not really sure how that works for these kinds of consoles. I know there is a Genesis Retro console which as I recall uses some sort of emulator, and is fully endorsed by Sega. You can see it occasionally in shops, and it's easily available online. It can play the original carts, and also the SMS ones, as well as having a bunch of games built in.

I thought the system was supposed to be some sort of hybrid retro system, that could also have new developer support. There seems to be a lot of confusion over what this is outside of the community which is keeping up with it...and that may be something worth clearing up in order to garner more support for it, as well as not get people to think Sega is making a next gen console and re-entering the market.

I'll keep an eye on it personally. If it has good BC support for a bunch of Sega consoles, and has good hardware, I may consider it as a replacement for the various Sega systems I have hooked up to my TV. Otherwise, I'm not too keen on getting a new console which is likely to be underpowered since it's not a full next gen console, and will likely see minimal support...or re-release support of older games...which I don't need for Sega systems given my personal collection.

MJunior3002d ago

Another SEGA console? Just bring it, day one buy!

Do they want to be taken out of the Console market twice?

Sega sells Relic and will cut 240 jobs across UK studios

GamesIndustry.biz writes: "Relic is best known for the Company of Heroes and Dawn of War games, and recently developed the new Age of Empires for Microsoft. Relic will transition to an independent studio and will no-longer be part of the Sega group of studios.

The majority of the 240 job cuts are across Creative Assembly and Sega Europe, while there will be a ‘small number’ cut from Sega HARDLight. There was no mention of other Sega UK studios, including Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive."

Shame about Creative Assembly, they should have just been allowed to do an Alien Isolation sequel.

just_looken27d ago

It was that garbage coh 3 that did them in only a special team can make a sequel worse in every way even though it was a 10 year gap and the same era.

gold_drake27d ago

I hope they find new jobs in the industry soon.

Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive probably run on a shoe string budget so that fits into SEGA better lol
