Amazon accept pre-orders for Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4

Fabrizia Malgieri

On the same day that Rise of the Tomb Raider was launched on PC, Amazon.com opened the pre-orders of Crystal Dynamics' game on PlayStation 4. The launch date on the game's product page is set for December 30, 2016, but that is surely a placeholder

It's coming...

Hopefully they will do a Collectors edition aswell.

T1ttyMunch3r3000d ago

Yeah hopefully, and im pretty sure they will release goty edition for 60. Is all the dlc out?

jb2273000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

I believe there is only one more major release left in the season pass that was sounding like some form of horde or endurance mode or something akin to CoD zombies & would most likely release around April. The only sp dlc was Baba Yaga that just came out.

I'm thinking CD has to be working on one more significant sp dlc for the PS4 release...not sure if it'll be exclusive or available on all platforms, but the only real way that I see Sony marketing or CD earning any goodwill from fans is if they make something special for the game to make up for the wait. If they include that new dlc & all prior dlc then I'd pay the full $60 for the game. Otherwise it'd have to be discounted to $40 or less if CD wants to keep their fanbase happy in light of their dealings. Really excited to play the game as it is hands down one of my favorite franchises but if they release the base game at $60, a byproduct of having the core Sony fanbase wait a year will be that they will just wait longer to pick the game up used or at a steep discount.

Majin-vegeta3000d ago

@JB who knows they may throw in the code for the TR:DE to sweeten the deal.

dantesparda3000d ago Show
jb2272999d ago

@majin

That'd be nice for some folks if they gave the DE for free, but that wouldn't appease their core fanbase. I have the original release & the DE already, bought them both full price at launch because I'm a big fan of the franchise. I'd assume the vast majority of Tr fans like myself on PS have done the same already. The DE won't be enough in my eyes. I'd need some meaty new section of gaming content. One of my big things that I was looking forward to w/ RotTR was the "globe trotting adventure" they original called it...I was looking for a jump similar to what happened between Uc1 & UC2, where the first title stuck to one location & the second blew it out into a worldwide adventure. That obviously didn't happen as there are only 2 locations in the game, the main section of Siberia & the short detour to Syria. For the PS release I'd like to see an entirely new section similar to the Syria portion taking place in a different locale, like a jungle or a city. That would get me pumped....any pallets swap of Siberia or anything short of an entirely new section won't do much for me personally & if they just offer us core fans a game that we already purchased out of loyalty then that'd almost be even worse haha...nice gesture for the people that never got around to it, but not a gesture for the fans whatsoever

mozzie2999d ago

@jb227

are you serious? just because you have a Playstation instead of an xbox you think that CD will somehow make the game even bigger for you? seriously? wow.

UltraNova2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

@dantesparda

""Amazon accept pre-orders for Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4"

Yeah, ok, have fun waiting."

Dont worry, a little tiny game called Uncharted 4 will help us endure the seemingly insurmountable wait for Tomb Raider...

OT:

jb227, agreed on all accounts. The game has to come with everything released in 2015 and 2016 included at $40 or with everything plus ps4 only content(worthwhile enough) to warrant a $60 price.

barb_wire2999d ago

@jb227

CD ain't doing shit on the PS4.. they haven't worked on the PS platform since 2006, everything 'Tomb Raider' from Underworld onwards has been done by Nixxes for the PS platform.

Not worried though, Nixxes are a top-notch conversion studio. Don't believe me, play the 360 version (which they did) of Rise of the Tomb Raider - simply amazing what they did and none of the input lag either.

If there's a CE, I hope it's not as crappy as the one they did for the X1. Probably will be since they'll likely just repackage all the unsold CE's they have from the X1....and no, I'm not saying the game itself sold poorly, just the CE of the game.

TripleCs3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

Anything over 40 bucks is a no go for me.

OldGuyStillGaming3000d ago

It's worth full price, this isn't some half assed game.

TripleCs3000d ago

It probably is a great game and it probably is worth the price of admission for $60 but that's not the point though. It's not about whether or not it's worth the $60 price tag. It's about the principle of the matter. I'm not going to pay full price for the game after being shafted and being forced to wait a year, especially when the game will probably be cheaper on other platforms by the time it arrives. Sorry, not happening..

thekhurg3000d ago

@brokasfawk

It'll be over a year old by the time it hits the PS4. Full price is nothing over $40.

Errorist763000d ago

relax...I'm pretty sure you won't have to wait until the holidays until it comes out.

fallacious3000d ago

You're exactly right, it's the principle of the matter. Which is why I choose to wait until the pirated version is out. I could've bought it for $40 from greenmangaming for my PC, but that's not gonna happen because of the exclusivity deal. And if I am gonna buy it for the PS4 then it will be when it's $30 or less.

WickedLester2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

@brokeasfawk

It may not be a half assed game but that sure was a half assed deal Square/Enix made with MS to prevent me from playing it this past holiday season . Theyre not seeing a dime of my money! I plan on buying it used. Is that petty and spiteful? Damn right it is but its deserved when a company does such a thing.

@BadBoyC

Damn skippy!

rainslacker2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

If it's priced anymore than a new copy of the X1 version, it's overpriced. I'd be willing, albeit begrudgingly, to let them add $10 for included DLC if it's compelling and no GOTY edition exists on X1 that is $30-40 also, but other than that, the market value is whatever the X1 version will be at....which will probably be $30-40 by the end of the year...or less.

I don't care if they have to put more work into making the PS4 version. That doesn't justify selling a game for more than it's market value, as a year later doesn't change the fact that the game would have sold for $60 on PS4 had it released last year for it. We all know that after a year, $30 is typical for most games to sell for new...actually, $20 is more typical, but I know it won't be that cheap. I actually don't doubt they'll release at $60, or maybe $50 on the low end.

For me, it's not really a matter of principal or trying to express to SE I'm unhappy with the route they took, it's that I don't like spending more than the market value of a game.

mozzie2999d ago Show
UltraNova2999d ago

Dont worry you guys it will be priced at 9.99, for the 1st part that is since it has a really good chance of being chopped up and sold as episodic...

ifistbrowni2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

@brokas, obviously the market disagrees since it didn't even sell well at launch.

They can try to sell this game on PS4 launch for $60 but i dont think many are going to buy it. It's hard to say if people will even buy it at $40, there are going to be new games with a lot more hype coming out this fall (the expected release window of ROTTR).

I think this game missed it's chance on consoles. They released it in a crowded period on Xbox One and by time it launches on PS4 there will be little hype for a year old game.

I do not doubt that it will do well on PC, though. It has a pretty good release window on PC. Honestly, I believe they should've held the game on XB1 and released it around this time. I find myself (for the first time since June 2015) cleaning up my backlog of games right now and the only game on my radar before April is The Division.

Tomb Raider finding a release window this fall at $60 launch price sounds like another tough break for Crystal Dynamics. Either they release before the flurry of new games at a launch price of $40 including all DLC or I see them failing on consoles for the 2nd time.

EDIT: Unless I remember wrong... Tomb Raider Definitive Edition launched a year after it's original release and was listed at $40... Using this justification, I see no reason why Crystal Dynamics would try to release ROTTR a year late at $60.

XanderZane2999d ago

Guess you won't be getting it then. It'll be $60 just like when it launched. The game is definitely worth $60, that's why I bought it on Day One. No one shafted you. It it had launched for PS4 with the XB1 it would have still be $60. So that's what you would have paid anyways. Most likely it will be cheaper on the XB1 once it hits the PS4. GOTY version will be $40 on XB1 & even cheaper on PC before the year is over.

kaizokuspy2996d ago

It will still be $60. I don't see why they should drop the price. Technically it will be a new game for PS4 at least. Hopefully theu include the DLC too

TripleCs3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

Why shouldn't they? PS4 owners are getting the game a year after other platforms. They must be out of their minds if they think a large amount of PS4 owners are going to rush to stores to buy their game at full price after getting shafted and being forced to wait a year to play it when it has already been out for a year on other platforms lol. Also, by the time it releases on the PS4 it will most likely be cheaper on other platforms.

I think it'll be $40..

ShadowKnight3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

PS4 owners will have the opportunity to play Uncharted 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider in the same year. You lucky devils. Must be nice.

Odoylerules0002999d ago

"Technically a new game" but not really a new game at all. Its a game that any of us can play on PC or Xbone and will be at least a year old by the time it lands on PS4. Bargain bin for sure. Did it sell well on the Bone? If not, then I can't see them charging $60 for a game that's a year old. I doubt most people would pay that much for it by that time. Too many good games out for it to compete at that price.

rainslacker2999d ago

It's a year old game. Let's assume they put out a GOTY edition on X1 with DLC for the typical $40. Why would it be worth more on PS4 just because the PS4 hasn't had it available yet?

Market forces dictate, that something is worth a certain....typically what consumers are willing to spend. However, if you see a PS4 version sitting on the shelf for $60, and the X1 version for $30, what would make one say it's worth twice as much on the PS4?

I'm sure it'll sell at $60, but like the last game, I think a lot of the sales will come in when it lowers in price, and this time even more so because SE has pissed off a lot of gamers, many of which already don't like spending $60 on new games that have never been out before.

yeahright22999d ago

You don't see why? Because perception matters. Look at the beating they took as details of the deal started to come out. They're not going to be stupid enough to launch on PS4 at more than what X1 costs at the time. That would start up another uproar on the biggest install base of current gen. No company wants that much bad blood with their consumers.

OldGuyStillGaming3000d ago

You want a cheap version then wait to play it 2 years from now or until it drops to your price range

jb2273000d ago

2 years? Wasn't RotTR discounted to $40 bucks less than a month after release on XBO? Pretty sure it won't take 2 years. The game looks phenomenal but he has a point, why would PS4 owners pick up a game that is identical to the other platforms & by that time available for around $25 on those systems solely because of a deal that actively impacted their play of a franchise that had a lifelong history of a multiplat release that they had supported w/ the prior installments?

The only way this game is able to be highlighted at Sony's E3 is if they add a meaty new chunk of content for the PS4 release. If they do that & also add all previous dlc, then I'd pay full price. Anything less than that & even as a huge lifelong TR fan that has grabbed them all full price at release, I can't really support it. CD needs to earn back some goodwill from their core fanbase on Sony in some way for good reason. We were treated like second class citizens in this scenario and we need either some reassurance that it won't happen again or some recompense for the wait.

Again I'm sure Sony won't care to market or push this game at all unless they are being offered something significant for the time. If CD is smart they will create a large new section of gameplay in a brand new environment so that they can show it off at E3 to get gamers on board to pick it up when it drops in November.

G20WLY3000d ago

This game might be great (haven't played it), but the price dropped VERY quickly for holiday sales and even on PC you can grab it for $9 from Windows Store...

http://n4g.com/news/1857753...

If it launches at full price, it will simply die (again) and if it launches at a discounted price with all DLC, it will still drop quickly due to the delay. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony snagged it as a PS+ game at some point soonish after release to rejuvenate interest in the franchise for PlayStation only players...

pivotplease3000d ago

Games take less than 6 months to drop to a third of the price these days. Discounting Nintendo games though because of greed/compensation for lack of third party sales profit (horrible pun intended).

rainslacker2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

@jb

No way this game gets time at Sony's E3. UC4 will be more likely, and that will have released already...so I'd expect some DLC news for that over the announcement of a game which people aren't even really snatching up at $40 right now. Horizon is likely to be their biggest show stopper, and I doubt ROTTR even gets a spot in the sizzle reel.

Not to mention, if this comes out during the holidays, $60, or even $50 insures that no one is going to care, as this years holiday line up is already pretty compelling for the little we know about it, and the whole year is chock full of games which are going to leave ROTTR an afterthought to many.

This game is likely going to be one of those games people pick up on the cheap when the prices go down, and they happen to have nothing else to play. It'll sell some initially, then probably nothing. Once it hits $30, and most definitely $20, then people will pick it up. People may disagree, but I willingly encourage anyone to remember this comment, then call me out on it after the games release. If I'm wrong, great, SE and the devs make some money. If I'm right, then SE, and hopefully others, learn a good lesson that console exclusivity is a risky game that only pisses off the audience.

jb2272999d ago

@rainslacker

I agree that the game wouldn't appear at E3 if it remained unchanged for the PS4 version for sure, but Square would do well to do whatever they can to make an appearance at Sony's show in that capacity. It would be good for both parties, Square could showcase some great substantial new content for the game to make up to Sony fans for the delay & Sony would most likely be willing to accept it because that helps them illustrate to gamers that they won't be second class citizens in this situation. After all of the controversy, some form of new exclusive content would be a pretty significant reveal in terms of crowd pleasers & Sony most likely knows that TR has a long history & fanbase on their platform so getting together w/ Square & showing off some amazing new content would be a good move imo. Whether or not it'll happen is anyone's guess, but that's the only way I see the game moving even a fraction of what it would have as a simultaneous multiplat release.

I really can't wait to see what ND does for their first UC4 dlc, and I've been thinking that E3 might be the place to show that off, but do you think it'll be too soon? ND won't start any dlc until after the game ships at the end of April (as of a month ago they had no idea what it would consist of), and Left Behind happened nearly a full year on from the release of TLOU. Unless they put together some short non gameplay teaser I'm guessing the first place they'd be able to show off that dlc will be PGW or PSX. PSX would be my best bet.

Sony definitely won't be lacking for E3 announcements either way, but I think it'd be in everyone's best interests, gamers & both Sony & Square to create some new content for the RotTR ps4 release to show off at E3.

rainslacker2998d ago

I have no doubt Square will make an appearance at their conference. I mean, the announcement didn't curb SE and Sony's partnerships for all the other games they're bringing to PS4. My guess would be FFXV, KH3, and maybe Neir. Quite possibly FFVIIR, but they may save that for another conference. I think over the past year, SE has gotten a lot of air time at Sony conferences, so obviously, the deal hasn't soured the relationship between the two parties.

I don't know if there would be SP DLC for UC4. Certainly possible, and maybe a given considering how well things like Left behind or even First light were. Strong SP campaign DLC in it's own little release seem to be quite popular with Sony, and given the current knowledge of the UC4 story, and the gap in time between UC3 and UC4, there is likely plenty of stories for them to explore.

Killz4Twinkies3000d ago

I could easily see it launching as "Definitive Edition" for PS4/XB1 with all the DLC.

$60 would be a reasonable price and similar to many other games that offer their own 'ultimate' version.....

Regardless, happy to see everyone getting a chance to play this game as it is easily one of the best games so far this gen (i will be picking up second copy for PS4 for them trophies)

rainslacker2999d ago

Definitive/GOTY/Best of Editions typically release around the $40 mark. No reason the PS4 release should be any more than whatever version of the "complete" edition sells for on Xbox...assuming it has the same amount of content, and if it has more, assuming that the extra content is worthy of a $15-20 markup.

That's just my opinion, because SE will be setting the market value with their complete edition on X1, and there's absolutely no reason, other than added content, for it to be more on PS4.

$60 is likely though, and the game likely won't sell well given the circumstances surrounding it's release.

Killz4Twinkies2999d ago

@rainslacker

Couldn't agree more. There is not a single reason that the PS4 version should be more $$ than the XB1 GOTY/Definitive Version.

I am just assuming with it being new to the PS4, that both the xb and ps version will both be at the $60 price point... Hopefully i am wrong

This year-long wait has taken its toll on me. I spoiled the plot points of this game, though I only have myself to blame. Errorist763000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

They made it possible on the first game (60fps on PS4, 30fps on XB1) but I highly doubt they will be able to optimise it that much.

It would be very impressive if they did...at least they have got quite some time left to try it, considering it really comes out in fall, which I still kinda doubt.

ShadowKnight3000d ago

You never know. They might be able to. I like to keep an open mind and see what developers can do technically

ThePope3000d ago

But remember when the X1 version of the first one launched the system was still holding 20%(I think that's the amount) of the systems power for Kinect hence the difference. RoTR is an amazing looking game and is probably too much for either console to do 60

skeetys2999d ago

@ThePope Kinect was using 10% of the CPU, not the GPU (the important part) That's why Xbone games still can barely do 900p most of the time.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai461d ago (Edited 461d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness459d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch459d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730459d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior459d ago (Edited 459d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot461d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto459d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior461d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B459d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws459d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730459d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69459d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.

Claim games by going to the website and login using ur credentials. I did the same as i couldnt use epic launcher. Also try reinstalling Epic Launcher I did it and it worked.
