Beyond: Two Souls PS4 Review - Metro

Metro.co.uk:The game with the best graphics on the PS3 now looks even better on the PS4, but has the storytelling improved as well?

Gazondaily3071d ago

Ouch. Well they awarded it the same score for the last gen version

Abash3071d ago

I played the PS3 version of the game and found it great. The game does have its drawbacks like most other games but it's definitely a game that should be experienced. David Cage has consistently made experiences that really hit you in the emotions

bouzebbal3071d ago

haha i get it that this game isn't for everyone but give it a 4 on PS3 and give it the same on PS4 is really nothing but hunger for clicks.
This is the state of "journalism" nowadays..
Beyond is a 7/10 for me.
It's a good story packed in a amazing esthetics. The has some quite boring moments unlike Heavy Rain which is gaining in intensity and getting more interesting in every scene.

PhucSeeker3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

Playing Heavy Rain depressed me and i loved it. But with Indigo Prophecy, all i remember now is rage. The game started out great, psychological stuffs are my jam. Then came the supernatural shit near the end and the main guy went all super hero murdering big monsters. Skipped B2S, I just somehow hate supernatural in drama.

Detroit is right up my alley though, hope it won't end up like IP.

Some people just none sense move forward during gameplay to just finish the game and then the game finish quickly with poor choice and ends bad then they say the game sucks..
only those who enjoy this game the ones that try everything on it and live it lke a movie

coolbeans3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

"David Cage has consistently made experiences that really hit you in the emotions."

Nothing personal but this struck me like you were reading one of Cage's cue cards. As far as Beyond goes, this is probably the most justified low score out of all his 'cinematic QTE adventure' games thus far.

And with this version now playable in chronological order, it's going to be apparent how terrible some of the character development is for every side character. While some of the one-off stories ARE interesting, it's still a mess from top to bottom.

MehmetAlperTR3071d ago

I played this game on PS3.. It was a nice game. Not bad but nice.. It s about 8,5 or 7,5 something else..

ChronoJoe3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

Metro is all sensationalist garbage. Look at a few of their headlines posted recently

XBOX ONE ELITE Controller - Best gamepad ever
Bloodborne The Old Hunters DLC completes the game of the year
Animal Crossing Amibo Festival is the worst Wii U game yet

Everything is either the best, or the worst. Metro is tabloid press, they publish trash and their writer work for clicks. They do not report the news, they twist and spin the news for their interests, and in they do the same with their reviews.

I'm not saying Beyond is an amazing game, I'm saying Metro, broadly, is a trashy outlet.

killa_sam3071d ago

Yeah this game was really cool people need get over the fact it doesn't follow traditional gameplay.

What it means is it's not better nor worse than the PS3 version. Since I liked the original I guess I'll like it the same. I'm getting it now.

Wow! Thanks clickbait article!

Wellsy4873071d ago

How is it a clickbait article if they gave it the same score as last time?

Rachel_Alucard3071d ago

@Wellsy487
Because the word "clickbait" went from false reading headline to an excuse to trash any article that doesnt share your viewpoints. A review is never a clickbait article regardless of the score given to the item, yet people shout clickbait everytime a big AAA game gets anything below their expected score range like there is some aribituary rule set in place

Why o why3071d ago

Metro have always seemed overly critical.

boodi3071d ago

played it on ps3 but it was definitely not a blasting experience .. also it seems the graphics have not upgraded very much really in the new version .imo.

N4GGuy243071d ago

Play Heavy Rain guys a much better game. This was a bad game to begin with so releasing it again wont much make difference. David Cage needs to try new genres rather then sticking to these types of games. Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls and Farenhiet. Would be nice to see what else he can do rather then making movie type QTE games.

Flewid6383071d ago

I thought Farenheit, Heavy Rain and Beyond were all amazing.. Hasn't been a Quantic Dream experience I haven't enjoyed yet.

Christopher3071d ago

I see no reason to get it on PS4 just as I saw no reason to get it on PS3. I'm astonished they wasted any money at all on a port of this sort. Moreso than any other port they've done so far.

G20WLY3070d ago

If people fancy buying the game, that, for them, is reason enough.

I expect it was decided to port this game because it was released so very late in the PS3 generation. It might be possible it was skipped by some that were saving for the PS4.

DarkOcelet3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

Seriously?

4/10? Clickbait much?

The game is in no form a 4/10.

"And although apparently David Cage will be taking a less domineering role on new game Detroit: Become Human the trailer does little to suggest its approach is very much different."

So we are going to judge a game based on the trailer now eh? Give me a break.

GribbleGrunger3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

They seriously said that? This is getting ridiculous beyond description. How can you possibly even assess what a game IS from a trailer, let alone how it plays? This nonsense is killing the reputation of ALL game related media.

_-EDMIX-_3071d ago

Agreed. Its an amazing game and for its price currently, I would definitely tell folks to help themselves. I never went into Heavy Rain nor Beyond Two Souls with this Citizen Kane or Bioshock type mentality lol.

For what it is, its a great game. If you like Life Is Strange, any of Telltales games or over all adventure, story and narrative driven games, this game is very much for you.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I question, if you don't get the genre, how can you review such a game? Do they not get it was never attempting to be Gears Of War or Assassins Creed? It seems many review this game with this strange understanding as if it failed to be God Of War or something lol

Some of my favorite games this year have been games of such nature, Everybody's Gone To The Rapture, Life Is Strange finishing up, games like this have a place in gaming.

-Foxtrot3071d ago

They make out it's broken but I bet they didn't have a problem with Unity

Hell how can you judge a game like this for being cinematic and about story yet praise point and click games that Telltale does

DarkOcelet3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

Apparently some people have a problem when a AAA game is point and click. But when an indie game has the same style, it gets praised to hell.

They also gave Until Dawn a 6/10.

http://metro.co.uk/2015/08/...

-Foxtrot3071d ago

It bugs me as Telltale are nothing special, they're stories aren't amazing as people make out and it comes mostly down to the brand they are using. Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Minecraft, Back to the Future, he'll even Wolf Among us with the fable series has a loyal following

Yet an AAA does it which branches out more then just the standard point and click and they are criticised for it. The year Walking Dead came out and was praised was the year Heavy Rain was called for the same things they praised WD for

Big_Game_Hunters3071d ago

Because the story blows. its far more common for bad movies to get 4s and 3s than games because a game can still be somewhat fun and worth at least a 6. But B2S is nothing but story therefore garbage story=garbage score.

George Sears3071d ago

Is it that hard to believe that people simply prefer those Telltale games than whatever David Cage pulls out? Or does it automatically need to get a high score simply because it's a "AAA" game?

Anyways, these genres are all about the story since the gameplay is usually a QTE based point and click crap. If the story doesn't follow through, the game would fall into mediocrity.

Michael6226323071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

http://metro.co.uk/2014/11/...

Read the Unity review and see for yourself.
(Spoiler: They had loads of problems with it)

mgszelda13071d ago

Exactly. Tell Tale gives the illusion of choice.

freshslicepizza3071d ago

telltale manages to get people interested in the characters and can enjoy the story. david cage is like the uwe boll of story tellers.

if a game is going to go the route of being cinematic with qte and leaving the gamer at the mercy of the developer linear gameplay then write a good story that is intriguing.

Big_Game_Hunters3071d ago

The only thing this game has going for it is it's story.
Therefore 4/10 story = 4/10 score.
David cage is a joke of a writer.

DarkOcelet3071d ago

I think David Cage is a good writer who could use a hand every now and then to make his stuff better.

And i enjoyed all of his games.

Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls were some of my favorite games.

Especially Heavy Rain, that game was a masterpiece.

KUV19773071d ago

I completely agree that Cage is terrible. I really like the concept of the new game but I am just afraid that he will ruin it too. Since they have another writer on board, there is some hope, the Story will make some sense and have cohesion.

Genuine-User3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

Scoring this game a 4/10 is kind of rediculous no matter how Metro puts it.

This game is an easy 7.5/10 for me.

DarkOcelet3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

The person clearly hates those style of games. All of his/her scores on Interactive games is pretty low.

It seems his/her focus in games is mostly about gameplay rather than a good story accompanied with a good gameplay or one that suits the style of the game.

Genuine-User3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

I am of the opinion that one should not review any game relating to a genre they do not like.

Fez3070d ago (Edited 3070d ago )

I disagree. I like hearing from people with different viewpoints on why they dislike a game or genre... it helps when thinking about purchasing a game. What's the point of only reading things you agree with? As long as there is a preface or a mention as to their opinion on the genre I think it's fine.

generic-user-name3071d ago

Metro have always been biased against Sony exclusives. That quote you pulled is great evidence of that.

G20WLY3070d ago

^Absolutely spot on. There's a sad agenda behind their game reviews. It's plain as day and has been for years now.

It's a real shame, because the unwary reader will take their word as a true reflection of their experience.

I wonder if it's driven by backhanders, driving readership by 'going against the grain' (generating hits) or sheer personal bias?

The editor (and publishers) need to get this in check fast as they will ultimately lose readership as people come to notice their views cannot be trusted.

garrettbobbyferguson3071d ago

"So we are going to judge a game based on the trailer now"

You mean what literally happens fore very single game that releases?

3071d ago
pcz3070d ago (Edited 3070d ago )

just by reading comments on this thread, you can tell the vast majority are completely ignorant about gamecentral. they arent the clueless clickbait tabloid reviewers many of you think they are.

they are highly respected to those who know... they have been around since the early 90s starting out as digitizer. just because they currently reside on a daily tabloid site, doesnt mean they are trash.

they have always (right from the very beginning) been brutally honest in their reviews. just because they talk unfavourably about a game you have fond memories of, doesnt make what they say any less true. most of the time they are exactly right, when you take those fanboy goggles off, you will see that is the truth of the matter.

4 out of 10?! What on earth? I'm a few hours in and its pretty fantastic there is no way by the end this game can warrant a 4. I'll make sure to ignore reviews from this site. Basically the only pro you guys gave it was for the graphics.

R6ex3071d ago

One of my most memorable game on PS3.

4/10?!

For me, at least 9/10!

Tobsesan3071d ago

I liked heavy rain more but this game is a 7-8 and not a 4!! Wth is this????

moegooner883071d ago

Metro has been trying way too hard lately with their review scores.

Michael6226323071d ago

Have they? Pretty consistent over the last ten years if you ask me.

bunt-custardly3071d ago

Again it's the shifting review scale where in one game 8/10 equals average and then the next 5/10 equals average.

Tsk.

Quantic Dream Announces Detroit: Become Human, Beyond: Two Souls, & Heavy Rain for Steam

Quantic Dream revealed the upcoming Steam Release of its games Detroit: Become Human, Beyond: Two Souls, and Heavy Rain coming "soon."

Sony is expanding their PC approach beyond (no pun intended) Epic Store realm.

Steam official pages:

Heavy Rain
https://store.steampowered....

Beyond: Two Souls
https://store.steampowered....

Detroit: Become Human
https://store.steampowered....

Abriael1430d ago (Edited 1430d ago )

Quantic Dream is self-publishing and doing this entirely independently from Sony. Sony is not involved at all.

Sciurus_vulgaris1430d ago

Detroit: Become Human and Beyond: Two Souls are owned by Sony. Therefore,Quantic Dream needs Sony's permission to release the titles on steam and PC.

https://trademarks.justia.c...
https://trademarks.justia.c...

Abriael1430d ago (Edited 1430d ago )

@Sciurus_vulgaris: neither is owned by Sony. Registering a trademark (trademarks are related only to titles and have nothing to do with game or IP ownership) is completely unrelated from owning the rights of a game.

Sony had the publishing license on the games as a second party for a period. That license has expired, so now Quantic Dream is free to do whatever they want with them, and they are.

Incidentally, they have announced a few months ago that now they're taking the independent route, so expect their games on all platforms from now on.

hulk_bash19871430d ago

A trademark is a way a company or individual exercises legal ownership of an intellectual property. And as of right now Sony does still own the trademarks for those two QD developed games.

https://breakinggames.com/p...

Abriael1430d ago (Edited 1430d ago )

@hulk_bash1987 "Breaking Games" isn't trademark law. That's a massive oversimplification of trademark law. Trademarks do not in any shape or form give you ownership on an IP. It gives you ownership of a name. period.

Since trademarks are completely separate by publishing contracts, Sony's publishing contract on a game can have expired (and it has, the publisher of the games on PC is Quantic Dream itself) but the trademark still not have expired.

Quantic Dream has full ownership of the IPs. In fact, you won't see Sony named absolutely anywhere in any listing for PC. If Sony was involved, you'd see them listed right there.

Imalwaysright1430d ago

hulk_bash1987

The intellectual property being the title of the game. Trademarks only protect names or logos. The game itself and everything in it: code, story, characters, art, etc are protected by copyrights.

hulk_bash19871430d ago

Sony does own the trademarks and therefore have ownership over some portion of the ip. So they wouldve had to agree or had some type of legal or mutual agreement in place for QD to release them on platforms outside of Playstation.

Abriael1430d ago (Edited 1430d ago )

@hulk_bash1987: Sony's influence on the title is determined exclusively by their publishing contract. That's all the legal agreement you need.

If the trademark had any value over this, you'd see trademark notices and Sony plastered all over the listings.

Bottomline, this has literally nothing to do with Sony's approach related to PC gaming as Obscure_Observer tried to imply.

hulk_bash19871430d ago

Regardless of the ownership debate. Sony has been more liberal with their exclusives recently. QDs games, Death Stranding and most importantly HZD.

Abriael1430d ago

Horizon Zero Dawn is likely an experiment done because Kojima Productions optimized the engine at basically no additional cost for Sony.

The release on PC of Death Stranding was likely a condition from Kojima himself since the beginning. This has nothing to do with Sony.

hulk_bash19871430d ago

Horizon is definetly and experiement. Its Sony testing the water, to see how big of an audience their games might have on PC. It was pretty much out right stated that they want to get their games out to as many people as possible. Which will potentially open people up to buying PS hardware.

ZwVw1430d ago

Bro, you're getting licencing and copyright confused. Beyond and Detroit are both Sony properties, who Sony is granting licensing permission for QT to publish on PC. This is nothing new. Companies like MS, Square and Sega do this all the time.

Besides, is you visit Detroit's Steam page, you can clearly see the Sony copyright at the bottom of the page. https://store.steampowered....

Obscure_Observer1430d ago

"Quantic Dream is self-publishing and doing this entirely independently from Sony. Sony is not involved at all."

The only reason those games are available on PC, is because Sony gave Quantic Dream a permission. If you think Sony paid those third party studios millions to develop a game so they can claim "independence" and do whatever they want with said games, you´re seriously mistaken.

Persian_Immortal1430d ago

According to the United States Copyright Office https://cocatalog.loc.gov/c...

Sony owns the Copyrights for Detroit Become Human and Beyond Two Souls and Death Stranding.

RosweeSon1430d ago

Even if they were 2 of those games were last gen who cares it’s a bit different if they are your only good games to talk about and releasing simultaneously these games are 5-10 years old came out of ps3 originally except Detroit. Like horizon it was a great game do I care it’s gone to PC also not at all I’d already and finished it over a year previously 🤷🏻‍♂️🤓 😜✌🏻

neutralgamer19921430d ago

Abriael

sony is notorious for wanting IP's. Insomniac pitched sunset overdrive to sony but went with ms because they were going to let insomniac keep the IP. I think sony is allowing this because it's towards the end of gen and these games will generate extra resources. Sony allowed it on epic first because they have a great relationship lately eith epic and now even if QD are self publishing they would have spoken to sony about it

you are making it sound like just because they are self publishing they don't have to ask sony. The company that owns the IP's has a lot of say

https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

BTW i am not saying other games from sony will come to PC just that they do own the IP's

there is no goal post if yo are comparing MS releasing all their exclusives on pc day one to sony releasing HZD(3 years after release on pc) than maybe you should look up those said goal posts. Most likely case with HZD is the fact kojima optimized the game engine for PC so sony/GG didn't have any extra cost to make it work on pc

If this makes Obscure happy, then does that mean he is secretly sad that ALL of xbox’s games are available on PC? Hmm

Obscure_Observer1429d ago

@S2Killinit

"If this makes Obscure happy, then does that mean he is secretly sad that ALL of xbox’s games are available on PC? Hmm"

Sad? Lol.

Xbox games on PC means more money to fund new first party studios, games and new IP´s for us, Xbox console gamers.

Sony is not stupid, they´re paying attention to every move competition makes. They will allow day one exclusives on PC? Unlikely. However, you´ll see more and more Playstation games making their way to PC. Then, will see more and more PS fanboys telling how Sony is making money out of the PC gamers to fund new first party studios, games and new IP´s for us, Playstation console gamers.

You heard from me first. Mark my words. ;)

S2Killinit1429d ago (Edited 1429d ago )

Not much of a prediction though is it? The issue is that xbox is already moving toward obsoletion of consoles because MS has realized that they cant dominate the console market, so they want to scorch earth the console habitat by making it irrelevant (or at least a less important factor). As a console gamer I will support consoles and console makers that resist these types of maneuvers. I say screw Microsoft.

itsmebryan1429d ago

Can someone explain why MS console exclusives on PC are bad, but, when Sony copies the same thing it's somehow "different" or "Okay"?

The Top Five: Women in Games

BY GRANT TAYLOR: If there’s one thing I appreciate in gaming, it’s a strong female character. In recent years, we’ve seen countless women in games, ranging from fierce warriors to masters of the supernatural. These days, if a game doesn’t have a female lead, you at least have the choice to select one.

I’ve played so many games with brilliant female protagonists in the last decade. It was honestly difficult getting this list down to just five!

So, which of these characters rank the highest?
