The most impressive part of this announcement is that it doesn't even include Digital Sales figures, just retail only....... /s

VGChartz is under tracking the PS4 by some 1.4 million units currently, which is pretty typical of them to be honest.

On a different but related topic, seeing these sold-through figures makes me think that there's a good chance that we will see PSVR release around March to mid-April instead of mid-May to mid-June. The PS4 will be at a comfortable 40+ million user base which means that even if only 1/10 current PS4 owners buys it in its first year on the market, that's still 4 million people consuming VR entertainment.

Anyways, congrats to Sony PlayStation on this crazy milestone. A milestone they've achieved without Gran Turismo, Uncharted, God of War, etc....

the most important thing is that most of those 30 million are dedicated hardcore gamers and that gives games a strong foundation for success.

What's scary is black friday and Christmas sales are yet to come. Easily 32 to 33 million by end of 2015

And to those of you asking will it surpass ps2, I simp,y say we don't know how long this gen will last. Ps2 was selling really well even after ps3 launched. If ps4 stays in the market same amount of time than I think ps4 will surpass it

I don't know if I see ps4 selling 150 to 160 million units. But I see it doing much better sales in a shore time than ps2

If ps2 sold 100 million in 6 years than ps4 might do it in 5 (just 3 maple numbers not actual factual numbers)

I find it funny how each gen is different to what people buy. Great numbers by Sony though. It will be interesting to see if the numbers get higher or start to drop off over the next few years but its good to see the gaming industry doing well. Both the PS4 and Xbox one will be hitting their stride in terms of games being 2 years in now and I cant wait to see what we have in store over the next 2 to 3 years.

The PS4 sales are insane but it probably won't come close to the PS2 totals. The PS2 came out in japan first and the reason it kept selling for such a long time was that it kept coming out in new areas even years after the initial release. The PS4 is already availiable in pretty much every relevant region. Besides that a lot of people bought the PS2 just to have a DVD player.

I also think that this gen won't last long enough to even come close to the ps2 sale numbers.

If it reaches PS1/Wii numbers it'll be considered a huge success.

The only way I can see them coming close to the PS2 sales is if PSVR will have an unexpectedly huge impact.

Yet when I point out that the data on Metacritiic doesnt support this assertion, I'm a bad guy for showing people on both sides of the fence the realities. X1 fans appear to be, right now, in denial.

For example objectively looking at data...
PS4 has 5 exclusives( Last of Us, Journey, Bloodborne, flower, Zen Pinball), that are in the Top 20 scored on that platform.
Xbox One has 2 exclusives (Forza and Tomb Raider). Not even the almighty Halo 5 is in the top 20 scored!

On both platforms everything else is multi-platform.

Now if you then drill down you'll find that Last of Us, Journey, Bloodborne and flower are in the top 10 rated PS4 games and are all rated about 90% score wise, while Forza and Tomb Raider are at 87% respectively and are not even in the top 10 score wise.

So actual game critics rate PS4 games higher than X1 games. You can try to refute the above and claim conspiracy theories, but that data is out there and for everyone to see.

But, I'm also objective enough to realise that, at the moment, multi-plats are doing better in terms of both sales and overall Metacritic scores on both console platforms.
This are the facts as they stand right now. I'm fine with facts, compared to just simple opinions that aren't backed up.

A gen will always last at least couple of years after generating insane sales like this. PS4 has such impressive momentum and that will snowball next year with the big hitters. PSVR will cause some sort of spike too (I'm in!)...

None of us know how long the gen will last, but I can tell you it won't be Sony wanting to end it. One of the others will bow out of the race early, but Sony will of course have new products well underway in their R&D.

That's all YEARS away though, let's just enjoy the awesome games we're getting currently!

It's not shipped. Shipped is probably sitting around 34m right now. You realize they will sell a few hundred thousand in Us alone this Friday... Right? Take into consideration they needs weeks worth of sales in Stock because it takes about a month from shipping for retailers to receive it and we are entering into the busiest period of the year. If they only shipped 30m, a mere 1m more than the end of September, then be prepared to see stock issues till next holiday season.

And no, they didn't call every store. But they can have a damn close idea of stock levels due to retail orders, NPD, GFK, Media Create and others. Notice Sony didn't say 30,254,598? It's because being that accurate isn't possible but from their knowledge they at least know it's past 30.2m

I remember when I needed warranty work on my PS3 years ago and had no receipt. Sony was able to look up my PS3 and see which store sold it to me as well as the date and time of purchase. They fixed it for free and told me the receipt is just insurance the console isn't stolen.

I think they know how many sold through to consumer figured out.

Sony has shown that if you properly support a platform world wide, it can remain as relevant as you keep it. With these platforms having the most developers in gaming history on top of network support, I just don't know when you'll see its sales completely stop.

100% exactly, what may be overlooked is the advances in nm scale manufacturer like AMD being able to shrink the die even smaller! That also means more power efficiency. Less required passive heat depletion needed or required to offset the heat put out on the system. Thus smaller housing lower cost in the required heat sinks, heat pipes, and fan's than power supply required heat displacement for power pricks can also be reduced.

Size of over all system, with reduced weight also reduced.

2) Christmas sales
3) 2016 sales with all the new exclusives

Holy, Honestly even after microsoft's initial launch botchup I did not expect Sony to be selling such insane numbers, I just Hope sony put in the effort in terms of exclusives the way they did for the ps3, 2016 looking good with the flagship title Uncharted 4 mere months away .

Also many of the people I know that owned 360's are converting to ps4 while those with ps3's are not really converting to xbox one based on my circle of friends, which if it is the norm, would only mean that they are millions to last gen gamers that plan on upgrading to ps4. Great news for Sony

To my knowledge the ps2 was the first console to literally stand above (vertically) the rest. Inadvertently that other rival continued the Playstation's tradition of standing tall, while that other box opted to lay flat.

Got to give Sony respect for not being 'afraid' to announce numbers unlike MS. Insane amount of units sold for PS4 and I am so glad they are doing this well. Let all the haters and 'PS4 has no games' idiots who actually believe themselves think real long and hard now.
