Fallout 4 PS4 vs Xbox One Frame-Rate Stress Tests

Digital Foundry:
Since our initial analysis, we've put more time into Fallout 4, and we've been able to isolate a number of spots that really challenge the engine. In particular the Corvega factory is a rough spot, and PS4 takes the brunt of the hit once we reach its rooftops (down to 15fps). Both machines also suffer long drops to 20fps in certain interior battles. Time will tell just how far-reaching these trouble spots are throughout the game, particularly once more hours tally up. In the meantime, we'll update soon with a full Face-Off, taking a deeper dive into the specific ins and outs of each platform.

YangXiaoLong3076d ago

Damage Control?

I see that other site was telling the truth how when on the ps4 it framerates drop when you fire your gun and xbox one doesn't.

MasterCornholio3076d ago

And in many cases the opposite is true.

I really cant come to a conclusion here.

Sometimes the PS4 is ahead and sometimes the XB1 is ahead. In the end its all the same to me.

Spid3r63076d ago

Show me the numbers....the other site did as far as overall experience and frame drops...DF just tells you and can manipulate what to show you. Overall I it seems the Xbox One performs better.

MasterCornholio3076d ago

@Spider

The video contains the numbers.

"DF just tells you and can manipulate what to show you"

Anyone can do that. Anyways believe in whatever comparison you want if it makes you feel better .

Bigpappy3076d ago

Yep. They both drop into the 20s when there area lot of effects and movement.

Having said that, it is a shame that DF had to tarnish the X1 version and now have to take it back. Something like this is enough to make people loose trust in the site. They have damaged their own integrity even though is commendable of them to retract and correct their slanderous claim.

Highlife3076d ago

Why don't we just enjoy the game and stop with all this stupid spec war crap. I find it funny and annoying that gamers will have a heart attack over the stupidest things.

dirkdady3076d ago

So what I've gleaned so far - NX does an first initial impressions on the first hour of gameplay and if you watch the video right at the first deathclaw fight in concord he exclaims ps4 struggles during intense fire fights and says he will continue to do a deep dive.
Internet gets whipped into a frenzy saying ps4 suffers.

Looking over at DF they say that from their extensive play through only the deathclaw battles (small number in grand scheme) ps4 has a performance hitch but overall is on par or surpasses Xbox one version.

I think they are both saying the same thing but the internet is taking NX's 1st hour analysis out of context.

Gazondaily3076d ago

Well both DF and NX are pretty much saying the same thing now no?

So yeah...

Anyway, just play the game. There isn't enough popcorn to go around for Bugthesda's antics.

Highlife3076d ago

Well I guess I'm wrong judging by the disagrees. Let's not enjoy the game and sit here and have a spec war.

Army_of_Darkness3076d ago (Edited 3076d ago )

The frame-rates on both consoles suck ass equally, that's the way I'm seeing it.
All this fighting over how "my console dips 2 frames less than yours" is just stupid when we all should be upset about how the developers could have done a better job with their game.
I just hope by the time I get the ps4 version( 4-6months from now) it will have a much steadier 30fps and is cheaper.

MasterCornholio3076d ago

@Army

"I just hope by the time I get the ps4 version( 4-6months from now) it will have a much steadier 30fps."

Hopefully they work their butts off to improve both versions of the game.

Patches can improve performance which is what happened with The Witcher 3. Im going to get that game because they eliminated the stupid lock at 20FPS.

Magnes3075d ago

A game that looks like this should run 1080p 30 fps on the Wii U I'm not knocking the game play or the visuals but we're not talking Witcher 3 fidelity here.

It's not damage control at all, that's fanboys wanting something to talk about.

DF always do extensive coverage on open-world games, because they are so huge and can take around tens of hours up to 100 to get a valid performance test.

They had multiple videos of The Witcher, Assassin's Creed, GTA V, and more. It's what they do with open-world. And when there is a patch or update they'll go back and revisit the game and add the updated results.

What needs to be discussed is the fact these garbage review sites have been giving the technical mess of a game passes in the vast majority of them, when Bethesda has been developing and producing these technical messy games with this engine for 10 years now. Oblivion has issue, Fallout 3 had issues, Fallout New Vegas had issue, and Skyrim had issues (some more than others). This could be blamed on the architecture of the PS360 at the time, but there is absolutely no excuse for these issues on PS4 / XBO / and PC.....OF ALL PLATFORMS PC. And then you have blatantly BS from PR reps, and comments like we'll let the PC community handle things with mods.

That's BS, and that's Damage Control.

frostypants3076d ago (Edited 3076d ago )

Because THE GAME IS FUN. It's not hard to comprehend.

ABizzel13076d ago (Edited 3076d ago )

@fronstpants

IDGAF. They've been producing technically messy games for a decade, let any other developer outside of maybe Rockstar make a game with framerate issues to this degree, and it's going to be pointed out by everyone and knocked for the framerate problems.

Bethesda has been getting a pass for 10 years, enough is enough.

BF4 was a mess at launch, and it was knocked regardless of how fun the multiplayer was which is still played by a large community to this day. Assassin's Creed Unity was a mess at launch, and it was knocked. Fallout 4, "THE GAME IS FUN" (which is the purpose of EVERY game) gets a free pass, because "it's a Bethesda game, and bugs are expected".

No what should be expected is that they get they're freaking engine and developers to code their d@M# games properly, and stop leaving it to the mod community. It blows my mind how ignorant people are acting over this topic.

Yet people like you will be the first ones to complain about any other game having to get patched, or having issues just like Fallout 4 does. Stop giving these developers free passes.

You fools are the ones okaying all these technically messy game.

BallsEye3075d ago

If it wasn't damage control, why they didn't cover this part in their first video? I thought their analysis was more in-depth than NX gamer one? Why suddenly xbox one doesn't drop to 0 frames? WHy it works better in every combat situation? Why in their first video they didn't mention ps4 drops to 15 fps during combat? You guys will believe any crap thrown at you.

ABizzel13075d ago (Edited 3075d ago )

"If it wasn't damage control, why they didn't cover this part in their first video?"

They covered the entire opening in their first video, but as they normally do with any other game, they focused on sections they felt would stress test the game, such as cities with NPCs, as they said here and in their newer analysis they didn't expect there to be performance drops in places that have absolutely nothing going on such as a small corridor with no enemies, or alpha effects where the PS4 versions of games generally perform MUCH better than the XBO versions such as GTAV alpha effects (which I'm sure you've read by now, since you're posting this comment a day later and it's was a top news story already that morning).

"I thought their analysis was more in-depth than NX gamer one? Why suddenly xbox one doesn't drop to 0 frames?"

The XBO drops to 0 fps during transitions between areas within cities, and if there was any kind of bias, as you so ignorantly proclaim, DF wouldn't have been the ones producing articles about using a faster HDD to help with performance on the XBO version.

"WHy it works better in every combat situation?"

It doesn't work better in every combat situation. There are places where the PS4 version drops significantly, and there are places where it's ahead of the XBO version as well, but most of the time the results are similar.

"Why in their first video they didn't mention ps4 drops to 15 fps during combat?"

Again because the combat it only happens in specific combat situations. It's not something that happens in the vast majority of combat sections, so it wasn't something they reported, because they more than likely weren't aware of the issue. This is a 100 hour game.

You guys will believe any crap thrown at you.

You ignorant fans want something irrelevant to complain about, when the real issue is why is the game performing this horrendous on all platforms (even the PC version suffers from these issues, but thankfully with better hardware you can power through it).

Take the BS somewhere else.

user99502793076d ago

honestly, I bet both sites run these tests over and over until they get two videos that fit their agenda. Its all a bunch of bull, there is nothing consistent about any of this crap. At least now NX and DF can fling poop at each other until a happy medium is reached.

Rookie_Monster3076d ago (Edited 3076d ago )

Yup, looks like damage control to me. Kind of curious why they did a preview test right at the launch of the game and proceeded to downplay the xb1 version with quotes like the infamous "0 fps" that no one seems to be able to detect. LoL

What made it worst is the person that did the pre test openly stated he don't like the XBOX or MS. Now that the truth has came out, he is trying to save his reputation. Too funny to me.

Also, they also tried their best to try to downplay the Rise of the Tomb Raider game but having put in over 5 hours in the game this far, It is a beautiful looking game that runs smoothly. Just to show these DF tests are nothing but propoganda tools and not what it will be in real world gameplay experience.

Well, glad the xb1 version and PS4 versions perform similarly.

Christopher3075d ago

***Just to show these DF tests are nothing but propoganda tools and not what it will be in real world gameplay experience. ***

I think that's a bit strong. I admit that they show the 'extremes' of issues on all platforms, but to say that they're propaganda is a bit much, IMHO.

MasterCornholio3075d ago (Edited 3075d ago )

@Christopher

"but to say that they're propaganda is a bit much, IMHO"

Yeah i agree with you. Sounds like a theory a crazy person would come up with. Ive heard both sides of the story and that Sony is paying off DF for the comparison and Microsoft is paying off NX for the comparison.

Absolutely crazy in my opinion.

http://i292.photobucket.com...

DOMination-3076d ago

I'm playing on ps4 and can absolutely confirm frequent albeit one or two second long frame drops. Nothing crazy bad but its definitely a thing.

Liqu1d3075d ago

Lol, I love these "damage control" comments from the fanboys. Both versions run equally as crap at times, neither one is better.

BallsEye3075d ago (Edited 3075d ago )

yep, DF at it's finest again. Everyone know they're biased towards ps4, they did admit it on neogaf. Fallout 4 runs like crap on both consoles, but drops to 15 fps is just too much...

xHeavYx3076d ago (Edited 3076d ago )

Isn't it like the 3rd video from DF about Fallout?
Smells like damage control.
They are not even using the same gun for the comparison. Shotgun VS handgun.

04STIBluByU3076d ago

It seems like...DF does extensive test whereas NX does about a 1 hour test...DF at least tries variations...ie HDD, different areas, different cards and cpus(PC's). Not Damage control...

MasterCornholio3076d ago

I remember them doing the same with The Witcher 3. Nice thing about DF is that they update the analysis when patches come out.

dreadz743075d ago

incorrect and he tested different HD btw.

MasterCornholio3076d ago

Both appear equally as bad to me.

Christopher3075d ago

Pretty much my thoughts on the original article. Both have poor performance results, no matter how you look at it.

If you want to sit here and wag your thing about claiming one is slightly worse than the other, go ahead. Instead, we should all be demanding better overall from the developers when it comes to performance. Even if it's only occasional major drops in framerate, there's still a constant dip below 30 just from moving around.

MasterCornholio3075d ago

Instead of attacking each other we should be attacking this guy.

http://128.199.85.8/wp-cont...

He promised us a solid performance on consoles and look what we got?

A game with a terrible framerate.

DivineAssault 3076d ago

This game shouldve been polished before release.. I know patches will somewhat fix the issues later but still, the game needed more dev time.

The Fallout Anthology Edition is coming to PC very soon, and is packaged with some very S.P.E.C.I.A.L. bonuses.

They included physical disc back then

Fallout player base begins to grow in wake of acclaimed TV show

The Fallout player base is beginning to grow in a resurgence following the release of the critically acclaimed TV show.

I bet they feel pretty stupid not allowing someone else, possibly Obsidian to do a Fallout game because they could have released it this year near the TV show to capitalise on it.

RaidenBlack4d ago

ironic, given the fact what the TV show did to New Vegas, lol

-Foxtrot4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

You know what the funny thing is...literally 10 MINUTES after making that comment I've just seen what they've done.

I mean it was a chalk board and it still feels a bit ambiguous in places but they didn't actually just do that...right?

FPS_D3TH4d ago

What exactly did the show do to New Vegas?

Wretchedstain3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

@ -Foxtrot. Based on a lot that I've read of your comments, i though we were on the same page (physical media etc non digital at nauseam...) . As Canon, I thought they did pretty well (I'm a hardcore fan), they delved into a pretty decent tie in to expand on for season 2, let alone fan service with nods to certain gameplay aspects along the way. I hope you've watched it to appreciate it 'for what it is', It's good. (Loved seeing Red Rocket station in Ep 7, goosebumps galore throughout the 8 Eps they did let alone that)

Sciurus_vulgaris4d ago

Obsidian has been working on two RPGs (Avowed and the Outer Worlds 2) for the past few years. TV shows and films can be produced much faster than video games.

-Foxtrot4d ago

I meant it as in if they just let Obsidian do this years ago before The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed was in production. This could have been their next game instead.

ED-E4d ago

Eh depends, development hell can take many years in movies and tv series. Fallout tv series was announced 4 years ago, which was also the main development time of Fallout 4.

But yeah Bethesda was already in full production of Starfield and working on Elders Scrolls on the side. Obsidian was already with Microsoft (while Beth was not) and busy with Grounded and Pentiment. So minor updates/dlcs for their latest games was probably the best they could do.

I would have outsourced a remaster/remake of Fallout 3 to align with the release tv series.

MrBaskerville3d ago

@-Foxtrot
From what I gather they'd rather do Avowed and Outer worlds at this point. Doesn't sound like the current Obsidian really desires to go back to New Vegas at this time.

Obscure_Observer4d ago

"I bet they feel pretty stupid not allowing someone else, possibly Obsidian to do a Fallout game because they could have released it this year near the TV show to capitalise on it."

They´ll certainly take advantage of the next gen upgrade, coming to Xbox Series, PS5 and PC.

raWfodog4d ago

“They´ll certainly take advantage of the next gen upgrade, coming to Xbox Series, PS5 and PC.”

You mean ‘current’ gen, right? ;)

Obscure_Observer4d ago

@raWfodog

Precisely. Thanks ;)

Chard4d ago

Bethesda probably resents that Obsidian made the best Fallout game

mastershredder4d ago

If you thought '76 made Fallout feel mainstream, now we have a TV show that looks like a cosplay convention. The clean duds and Garbage Kid- Looking power suits (Head scale) are killing me. I think that it's nice that there's something for tv viewers to glimpse at why people like Fallout, but they are only getting a filterd down, made for series-seasonal tv (ew), passanger's flattened persfective with no risk based upon actions or consequese or social/non-social stangings that are experienced in the game.

The series represent's itself as a Fallout the tv show for people that need that kind of pacing (again ew), not the Fallout the game. Some people will dig this. I can see them having reason to, considering everying the show is borrowing to make it something Falloutish. It not for me, and I'm cool with that.

Wretchedstain3d ago

I am a MASSIVE fallout fan, I have a computer desk shine THAT IS FALLOUT and no other. The show was amazing to me, and bias had nothing to do with that, my trepidation was ultimate. The tie in to 'something' New Vegas, had me cheering like a sports fan at the end there (I have the collectors edition, and covet its mint condition highly) and I hate sports. I love a lot of other gaming, movie and TV show things, what they have done its pretty damn cool to me.

marioJP873d ago

Checking out the show possibly tonight or tomorrow for sure. Hope it’s as good as everyone says.

anast3d ago

I have to watch it. Hopefully it's better than the recent Fallouts.

Very nice. Im sure many may start a new game to experience it all over again in better performance. I just did the same with FO3.

Obscure_Observer4d ago

New game for me too.

That black power armor from Enclave and the new Tesla Cannon looks badass!

GamerRN4d ago

I've had 60fps on Series X already since it launched. Is this different?

Tacoboto4d ago

Maybe try reading the article, or even the description below the headline.

That 60fps is the system-driven FPS Boost, this is a full current-gen optimized release making its way to PS5 too alongside other updates impacting all versions.

--Onilink--4d ago

In terms of performance, not really. FPS boost was already getting the game to 60.

But they are adding some other fixes and adding some stuff for free from the Creation Club

darthv724d ago

Yes. It is native Series X upgrade instead of using the XBO back compat game with FPS boost.

GamerRN4d ago

Ok, so it'll be 60fps just like before, with the same 4k upgrade it already had.... Got it

Tacoboto4d ago

Maybe not. That's a wait-to-find-out. FPS Boost on Series X runs in the One S mode as opposed to the 4K One X mode. It could be that the new Performance Mode is actually tweaked to the new consoles instead of the base-last-gen mode, and Quality should obviously be improved over that One X mode.

GamerRN4d ago

Fallout 4 stays 4k in fps boost mode...

Tacoboto3d ago

No it doesn't. It runs in the One S mode.

GamerRN3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Ok, maybe, who knows

GamerRN2d ago

I love how people are such Richards when you ask a question... Why can't gamers just be helpful? Why do people feel it necessary to be so mean instead of just answering a simple question?

It's such a good game. Still play it on pc every so often years after release. Can't wait to try it on ps5.

VenomUK3d ago

Will the PS5 version have DualSense updates?

I know Sony mandates that PS5 games must have but I don’t actually know if a PS4 game updated to PS5 also counts.

ocelot073d ago

Not to sure. I hope it does that would be great.

I also loved fallout vr on pc. I hope they bring fallout 4 vr to psvr2 but I doubt it.

ZeekQuattro4d ago

You'd think after damn near a 4 years people would stop calling current gen next gen. I know 2020 was an unprecedented year but damn. 🤣

Profchaos4d ago

Agree IGN still run a next gen console watch for machines we've had since 2020 it's becoming a joke
