Fallout 4: Next-gen or not?

Digital Foundry:
Much has been said of Fallout 4's graphics prior to its launch. Perhaps the most widely-leveled criticism is that it doesn't look like a 'next-gen' title in every aspect, but part of a line of games born from last-gen development. No doubt, Bethesda is in its element with the sheer scale of its world building - and certain leaps are made on a visual level. But questions were raised ahead of release; is this a true technical successor to Fallout 3? And has the Creation Engine evolved enough to a point where this could only be achieved on current-gen hardware?

Everything else is just stuff that Fallout 3/NV and TES 4/5 already did.

Aloy-Boyfriend3086d ago

Then many others aren't Next Gen either.

DarthZoolu3086d ago

Graphics are fine to me. But TES3 started this and it's time less. These style games aren't next Gen they are Forever gen.

BallsEye3085d ago

Wouldn't say so. In terms of pure possibilities and interaction, even Morrowind and Oblivion were "bigger" than Fallout. I'm a huge fan of Bethesda games and Fallout series, but they're dumbing down their games on every next release, to improve on overall presentation (because that's what kids dig these days)

1nsomniac3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Please explain a single thing that is next-gen about this game?

I'm only a few hours in but I'm yet to see, hear or find anything at all.

The graphics, dialogue, AI, animation, story branching everything I find sub par & not just marginally. More than shocked by the review scores it's been getting.

More than anything im sick & tired of having to restart the game due to my gun & pip-boy constantly going invisible. The fact that this is almost entirely ignored in every review I read despite the fact it happends so regularly & consistently.

thekhurg3085d ago

Gameplay isn't next-gen either.
Animations aren't next-gen.

It's the same gameplay experience we've been getting since morrowind.

If you compare it to Fallout3/NewVegas/Skyrim it definitely looks a lot better and runs at a higher res, really the only thing in it that looks very dated are the character models and the odd blurry texture.

madworld3086d ago

agree with you 100% man the graphics the worst thing in this game but everything else is damn goooooooooooooooooood.

FunkMacNasty3086d ago

Graphically, fallout 4 is not the best looking game, but if you played FO3 and New Vegas, you would realize that textures, lighting and overall detail are MUCH improved in fallout 4.

Whatever "looking next gen" is supposed to mean, I think fallout 4 definitley looks to be an improved visual iteration in the series, as a result of more powerful consoles. Compare the ruins of DC or Vegas to the ruins of Boston... Everything is much more detailed and dense in fallout 4.

showtimefolks3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

Graphics no

Size of open world no

Bugs and glitches and not well optimized not next Gen

Game play improved
Story side quest better
Interesting characters great

World building great

Weapons customization awesome

So in my humble opinion as a fallout fan, fallout 4 is absolutely next Gen title.

With patches and updates I think fallout 4 will improve a lot. I say the people who play fallout 4 in February or March of 2016 will get a much better and different experience

Also let's not decide what's truly makes a next Gen title. Is it only graphics? Because if that's the standard than its a shallow standard

Fallout 4 at its current state is a very good to great game that has huge room for improvement with patches

Enjoy we waited so long for a fallout game

Here is one hope though

I hope Bethesda uses a new engine for their next game. It's time

Next Gen or Not? ...

This entire Gen isn't "Next Gen", only Next Gen in terms of a slight improvement over the current PS3/360.

Let's keep it real /

And that's one of the trade-offs for having multiple consoles on the market.

If the PS4/XBO had just $100 worth of tech added to their price (instead of adding the cameras, which the PS4 would have likely added at that price), they could have had MUCH better CPUs (a big one), and a boost to their GPUs bringing it much closer to the R9 M290x (40% more RAW power than PS4) the PS4 is based off of (the XBO is based on the M280x, but could be better).

But they have to compete and price is one of the most important area where they compete with one another, and that instantly means hardware takes the first hit. It also didn't help that hardware is just now taking a huge leap technologically, with a new manufacturing fabrication expected 2016 and another around 2019.

The PS5 and XB4 should be much stronger consoles, but if developers try to push 4k gaming hard, then it's not going to show in-game. Thankfully there will be a huge variety of resolutions available for those consoles from 1440p - 4k.

Audiggity3086d ago

The issue is definitely the hardware taking the hit... but the underlying issue is greed. Both Sony and MS apparently lost money on the hardware sales of XB360 and PS3. This generation was such a small leap forward that they never took losses on the hardware from day 1.

So, previous gen they overspend on the hardware, take a loss and put their best foot forward.

This gen, they underspend on the hardware to save their profit margin, and take a mediocre step forward.

A dash of collusion inside of a crappy economy are surely to blame.

They should just release the new systems at the price-point needed to take a true leap forward. We'll need to hit 4K unfortunately. When it comes to the vast majority of TV displays it's either 1080P or 4K.

1440p WQHD is essentially reserved for PC monitors.

ABizzel13086d ago

@Audiggity

Agreed, but it is a business, and everyone's in business to not only provide a potentially great product, but to also make money, so I can't knock them for it.

Yes TV's for 1080p or 4k, but that doesn't mean a game has to be natively rendered at those resolutions and only those resolutions, which is why I say the range will be much better to work with next-gen.

I feel next-gen will be a tad closer to PS360, than PS4 / XBO. This is a transitional generation to the fullest. Simply here because the technology wasn't ready for a leap, and both companies wanted to make a nice profit before spending big on actual next-gen hardware.

dmeador3085d ago

Wrong on a few levels.

If you think that having less competition would have lead to a better product, you need to revisit econ 101.

Hardware "just now" taking a huge leap? Things are always improving and have been at about the same clip for decades. If you're always waiting another year until product x comes out, you'll be in that cycle forever. It had already been a very long time from a tech perspective since new system launch

ABizzel13085d ago

@dmeador

"If you think that having less competition would have lead to a better product, you need to revisit econ 101."

That logic NEVER works in the consumer technology field, because if a product does not grow and evolve it will spawn competition to take away market share. There is never any room for a product to sit idly by when technology is so accessibly especially on the consumer level.

However, if there was just one console it no longer has to worry about the "Must be $399 at launch clause or else I price myself out of the race, and have to take a loss and struggle for an entire generation." I've said this often I'm all for a 1 or 2 console future where Sony makes the hardware and MS make the software (OS / online). There's no need for both PS and Xbox to exists when they share 90% of the same library and cater to the same audiences. It does nothing but unnecessarily split the core market up, and hit Multi-console owners with a $1,000 expense each generation.

As far as hardware goes, we're just now hitting a new fabrication in PC components that's not launching until 2016, and it's successor is scheduled to launch in 2019.

The last 3 years of GPUs from AMD have been all about squeezing every last drop of performance they can from the 28nm processor, and we've been on the 40 / 32 / 28 line for the last 6 years.

The jump to Volta and Pascal are expected to be HUGE generational gains with each launch in GPU technology, which HUGE can only be described when looking at multiple generations of GPUs such as a Fermi vs Maxwell.

nitus103085d ago

Most HDTV's have an aspect ratio of 16:9 so 720p is 1024x720 pixels, 1080p is 1920x1080 pixels (known as FHD), 2160p is 3840x2160 pixels (known as 4k UHD) and 4320p is 7680×4320 pixels (known as 8k UHD).

Actually it is a bit more complex than what I have just said but for most TV's that will do. Once you change the aspect ratio from 16:9 the horizontal pixel count changes.

Basically 1440p is reserved for monitors.

As far as 4k native games go there are hardly any since only a very few high end graphics cards support that resolution. So what you see on your 4k UHD TV is basically up-scaled.

What is going to be interesting is next year (2016) 8k UHD TV's will appear on the market so for those people who are still thinking about getting a 4k UHD TV a six month wait for an 8k UHD probably wont kill you although your wallet may not like you.

I agree its the PC that demonstrates true next generation gaming. Visually, content wise, innovation, and affordable gaming.

someOnecalled3085d ago

Especially since pc been doing these next gen gfx for the longest. The best looking gfx on consoles tend to be very limited and scripted.

Remember last gen people was tryna say uncharted 2 looked better than the witcher 2 to try to combat pc games. The downplayed every pc exclusive and pc version that looked better just to pay for the definitive version later to say this looks amazing lol. A little too late the bar moved plus we mostly worry about gameplay that's why most of the innovative gameplay experience s start on pc then is copy to consoles. A lot of gameplay is taken from indies and people act like these huge devs created them outta thin air

DARK WITNESS3085d ago

Overall I have to say I agree

most games so far have really left me unimpressed with what is suppose to be "next gen"...

the thing is those games can't even use the excuse that it's because of gameplay or world size etc..that they don't push any boundries.

I can't even begin to express how disappointed I have been with Halo 5's visuals.

Batman was antoher, I mean I keep thinking there must be something wrong with my eyes. everyone else seems to think they look so amazing.. I think they look marginally better, in some cases not by that much considering these machines should be what...5x more powerful.

I don't feel like that power has showed yet. the only games that have been graphically insane, have been the most boring linear, basic in every other department type games.

Bass_fisherman3085d ago

FFXV looks like a proper current gen game

There's only so much you can do with consoles that have the gaming power of a mid-ranged gaming laptop.

1.6 / 1.75 GHZ CPU's can only do so much.

The minimum speed of most PC CPU's is 3.4 GHZ

It matters

3086d ago Replies(3)
Roccetarius3086d ago

Unfortunately, this is what happens when companies choose the lower end. This is going to be repeated with the next consoles as well.

nitus103085d ago

Basically the HDTV market is predominately 1080p Full HD so it makes perfect business sense to target that demographic.

4k UHD TV's are becoming more and more popular and they will upscale 1080p content however as I have said they are far more 1080p FHD TV's out there.

8k UHD will be out about mid 2016 and may only be anything from 10% to 30% (anybody know?) more than their equivalent 4k UHD TV's. If the price differential between 4k and 8k is small then effectively 4k UHD will die.

Somehow I don't foresee 16k UHD TV's in my lifetime but you never know.

LostDjinn3086d ago

Next-gen?
I thought the game released on current gen consoles and pc (only). No last-gen, no next-gen, no...#%?*ing idea what DF are even trying to achieve.

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

gamingbolt.com
-Foxtrot10h ago

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

Duke194h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

--Onilink--1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I dont think anyone is saying they need to come out every 2 years (not to mention almost no game is released that quickly anymore)

By the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will be more than 15 years since Fallout 4 came out (same with ES6 coming out 15 years after Skyrim). Even if you want to use F76 as the metric for the most recent release, that one came out in 2018. It will be a miracle if F5 comes out before 2030

The point is that for a studio that doesnt seem to operate with multiple teams doing several projects at once, that their projects normally take 4-5 years as a minimum, and that now they even added Starfield to the rotation, it becomes a 15+ years waiting period between releases for each series, which doesnt make sense. Imagine that Nintendo only released a mainline Mario or Zelda game every 15 years…

They either need to start developing more than 1 project at a time, let someone else take a crack at one of the IPs or significantly reduce their development times

Duke1913m ago(Edited 10m ago)

Why should someone else take a crack at one of the IPs? Look at what happened to Final Fantasy as a recent example - there is pretty clear FF fatigue setting in because they are now pumping out titles in the franchise every few years. Pumping out more games faster doesn't always make a series better.

There are plenty of options to make new games, not just create more titles in the same universe at a faster pace.

mandf1h ago

Yeah I’m going to say it, who cares about the modding community when making a game? Half the time developers only tolerate modders because they fix there game for them.

Skuletor3h ago

Yeah, let's all advocate for smaller gaps between series' releases, then we'll probably get headlines about how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven. Let them cook.

SimpleSlave2h ago

"how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven" So every Bethesda game then? Got it.

Listen, I would agree if this was about From Software or something, but Bethesda?

🤣

C'mon now. What timeline are you from?

Skuletor8m ago

Think about it, they're already bug filled messes on their current schedule, can you imagine how much worse it would be if they rushed things?

Duke1912m ago

I mean you aren't wrong. People are going to complain about anything

isarai2h ago

Hows about you focus on quality, just a thought 🤷‍♂️

Sciurus_vulgaris1h ago

Bethesda [or Microsoft] would have to reallocate internal and external studios towards fallout and elder scrolls titles. Bethesda has the issue of developing 2 big IPs that are large RPGs on rotation. If you want more Fallout and Elder Scrolls, development will have to be outsourced.

Fallout 4 – Why Was it So Divisive?

I loved it. And I platinum'd it. I guess it's like most "divisive" games. If you don't like it, so what? Let those that do, enjoy it.

Eonjay1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

The article is trying to create fud where there was none. It has an 87 meta (on PS4). There is nothing divisive about it. It was well received. Period. I don't remember any arguments except for some performance issues when it first came out. Thats it.

VenomUK1d ago

I really enjoyed Fallout 4.
I loved the halfway goal of what you are building towards. I had a good sense of what it was and then when you finally are almost there the music builds up - beautiful!

@Eonjay Forget the meta scores there are plenty of people who loved Fallout 3 but thought Fallout 4 was a bit of anticlimax and I do get it. Pete Hines the retired head of Bethesda's PR was even asked about it, and his answer was that it was because it simply didn't have the novelty of being brand new that Fallout 3 had.

Profchaos17h ago

No venture beyond that so many of the hardcore gatekeep the franchise hard as 4 was far more popular and simplified many of the rpg elements refined shooting to the point where vats was optional the game was far more accessible and sold the most out of every franchise entry to date.

It's my personal favourite I get why people love 3 or NV but I do hate seeing people crap on 4 and the people who like it.

neutralgamer199210h ago

It was a good shooter especially coming from FO3/NV game wise improvements wise but it was a below average RPG and that’s where many felt ROG elements should have been deeper

CantThinkOfAUsername1d 7h ago

Whatever they do, Fallout 5 is guaranteed to be dogsh*t.

GamerRN22h ago

What are you basing that off of?

CantThinkOfAUsername11h ago

- Fallout 4's story, characters, dialogue, and quests. They even managed to make the Vaults boring.
- Fallout 76 is Fallout 4 online. Same crap.
- Starfield doubled down on the crappiness of all these aspects despite being a new IP.

People bought and liked all of these games, which sends the message that we want more of this. I don't know about you, but I don't like being treated as a child and my intelligence insulted by developers.

ChasterMies1d 7h ago

Fallout 4 wasn’t so much divisive as not very good. But there aren’t many first person RPGs so what else are fans of the genre supposed to play?

FPS_D3TH1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

I think it was the lack of morality gameplay and lack of path to completion options compared to what fallout 3 and New Vegas offered. I think the issue mostly arose because of the voiced protagonist and how many lines of dialogue that needed to be recorded. Didn’t leave for many options beyond “good” “sarcastic douche” and the odd question or two for nearly every interaction. Personally I thought the game was fantastic as an adventure and exploration game, I liked the park system and base building, but the rpg aspects were fairly gutted. It made shooting much more tolerable too but it still wasn’t anything fantastic. The faction choices were ok and I felt like they all provided a more grey moral choice dilemma compared to older games which felt more good/evil but it wasn’t presented as such as prominently as I would’ve liked. You had to do some more internal and critical thinking of your own to come to decide why you’d support one faction over another unless you were in it just for some in game benefit or another.

kneon21h ago

I didn't like any of the factions, so when it got to the point that I had to choose, I chose to stop playing

jznrpg19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

I finished the game but you are correct. I was thinking I don’t really know which one to pick as I don’t really care for any of them. I was near the Institute so I just went with that quest line. A lame way to choose who will win but I didn’t really prefer one over the others

EazyC13h ago

I don't think FNV was good/evil. You have evil with Caesar's Legion, then everything else is different shades of grey imo and quite relative to your own political views! 😅

Friendlygamer1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

1 Bad writing, the main quest is terrible. The sense of urgency of the story is at odds with the open world nature of the game

2 Boring, bland factions

3 too much personality for the main character. The game decides that you're married, that you love your son, your voice... a rpg like fallout should have a blank slate mc

4 dead open world. Fallout 3 and nv have a bunch of small cities and locations on their maps that give you interesting quests and dialogue. In Fallout 4 it feels like 80 per cent of the map is focused on combat and environmental storytelling, it feels more like a post apocalyptic action game rather than a dialogue heavy rpg

Fallout 4 is a very fun open world fps with really cool environmental storytelling but a very poor rpg

Hopefully it won't be after the update. Mind you it'll probably introduce some new bugs 🤣

You probably need to download the native ps5 version, its not just a patch

This was my question, article states it’s a native version so will need to re-download when it releases.

Hoping it’s not a Bethesda buggy mess as the game has been out forever, but not holding my breath. Also unsure if saves will transfer, unlikely as again it’s a new version of the game

It was always playable for me on my PS4 Pro. I don't recall any issues aside from the usual 'Bethesda Bugs'. Nothing even close to game breaking.

Barlos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@just_looken

No I mean even back then, I can't recall any significant issues. Funny thing with the save file size is there were serious problems with Skyrim on PS3 because of the save file, until it was patched. Seems that Bethesda just don't learn.

If Far Harbor is butter smooth and this baby has a smooth release overall I’ll take back everything terrible I ever said about Bethesda. This is the best game they put out in the last ten years. Still betting on a Day one patch incoming though and probably more to come. They should allow pre load bc their servers are gonna get boinked.

Here’s the one Pro Tip you need—play as Evil, it’s impossible to keep track of who you are supposed to be for and against with all the Factions—I say F them all and play Evil so it’s no stress! Lol

I never finished the game because I got to the point where the game really wanted me to pick a side, I didn't want to side with anyone so I just stopped playing. It's pretty rare for me not to finish a game, but it just got boring.
