Rise of the Tomb Raider’s Launch is a Very Dumb Idea

CraveOnline: "Rise of the Tomb Raider reviews are out, and the game has received a very positive critical response. With Microsoft having secured the rights to make the game a "timed exclusive," which basically means that it will release on the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC before it presumably graces the PS4 and PS3 in the future, it was set to be one of the company's heaviest hitters of the entire year. It was to be another feather in the cap of what has been a strong year for the Xbox One, with the likes of Halo 5: Guardians having convinced many consumers to pick up the new console. But that arguably and won't the be case."

Those who want to get this game will get it. No Tomb Raider fan is going to skip it because of another game.

Gazondaily3084d ago

But the more mainstream fans- they might jump on massive hype bandwagon of Fallout that overshadows this by some degree.

I suspect that the close release to Fallout will definitely cause a dent in the sales unless MS go for a very aggressive Xmas marketing push for the title.

Neonridr3084d ago

while I get that, it's not like these same people can't go back to Tomb Raider.

I don't see why MS didn't turn around and delay it a few weeks once the Fallout release date was given, but it's a little late to be worrying about that now.

Foehammer3084d ago

Or

All the Hype about performance issues on console will make some ppl jump to ROTR until Fallout 4 gets patched.

Hoffmann3084d ago

2015 - where Fallout is more mainstream than Tomb Raider.

15-20 years ago everyone would have laughed about this. Always interesting how times are changing

3084d ago
Game4Next3084d ago

Release it on PS3? That's Dumb.

Genuine-User3084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

Dent in sales is a given.

Three reasons:

-Majority of Tomb Raider's fanbase is on PlayStation

-Releasing less than a week after Fallout 4; the most overhyped RPG this year

-Timed exclusivity

user99502793084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

"it's a little late to be worrying about that now."

Spot on. We're now fully in speculative "what if" territory. A fun little exercise for the fans, but ultimately pointless. Doesnt make a spit of difference when all is said and done. MS' and Crystal Dynamics are probably more than happy with the results after todays reviews. Doesn't look like the caliber of game that will be simply "ignored".

Rookie_Monster3084d ago (Edited 3083d ago )

Didn't GTA5 HD, Dragon Age Inquisition and Far Cry 4 all were releaed on the same day last year as well? So where were those doom and gloom articles back then?

Also, Target in the USA is having their annual buy 2 get 1 free on all games sales this week..so by both launching at the same time is perfect for me and many others. ;D

nix3083d ago (Edited 3083d ago )

I look at the hype of Fallout 4 and i look at hype of TR. If it wasn't a paid exclusive, i would have definitely felt sorry for the devs. Since it was paid by MS, well I'm going to feel sorry for MS.

#simple

Anyways, I'm not buying any of them. Oh how can thee? Yes i can.

UserNameIsNotTaken3083d ago

@shloobmm3

That's when it was on all platforms.

pinkcrocodile753083d ago

I think the author need a kick in the old love spuds. Maybe it's different in the US but here in the UK the games not out till Friday 13th Nov!.

Makes the whole article about as accurate as the evil new corp Fox News.

OK, so it's a fw days apart but so was Halo 5 and Assassins creed.

Bottom line, do we actually care about this... or have we got better things to do with our lives... like breathing?

butchertroll3084d ago

But Tomb Raider is not system seller either. Who will buy an Xbox One just to play Tomb Raider? Very, very, very few.

GearSkiN3084d ago

A few is consider a system seller coz someone did

Bathyj3083d ago

@GearSkiN

Thats not what System seller means. It means a game that significantly pushes extra sales of consoles, not that a few people bought a console to play it. Youre being too literal.

Just because I dropped a plate and cracked a tile does not mean my act was groundbreaking. Just because someone might eat crow, does not mean they will end up with a mouth full of black feathers.

Crashbandicoot773084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

@Neon You really believe that? So what if they're Tomb Raider fans that have only a PC or PS4? You think they will fly out to buy an Xbox one for $400.00 or 360 for just one game they want to play

Neonridr3083d ago

no, they will wait for the PS4 version to release to play it.

I am specifically referring to the Xbox One owners in my comment, sorry.

3084d ago
kraenk123084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

The fact is there are not that many TR fans on XBox if you consider last game's sales...so in a way it does matter. It definitely hinders the game from being a system seller, especially since it will be out on other systems later.

NatFanBoyRestricted3083d ago (Edited 3083d ago )

You never know. Maybe a majority of early x1 adapters had the last TR on their last gen console so didn't get the x1 version. Then the x1 version was free not to long ago on xbox live, so there can be more people either new or already a TR fan looking forward to getting this. When you talking about "last games" sales and xbox, are you talking about xbox in general or 360 or x1?

joab7773084d ago

Not true. Some ppl can't afford to buy multiple games at once. It may sell well over the next 3-6 months, but it will definitely do worse b/c of its exclusivity and it's release date.

And who knows what the climate will be next yr when it releases in PS4.

Tech53083d ago

I think there's going to be a little wait on Fallout 4, the game runs terrible on the consoles. hardly worth picking up at $60, not unless you're a die hard fan.

Yui_Suzumiya3083d ago

No waiting for me though. About to goto launch event for Fallout 4 at my local Gamestop. Mind you this is my first day 1 since Beyond: Two Souls which was a little over 2 years ago :3

Automatic793083d ago

I was anticipating TombRaider over Fallout more. I am still getting Fallout but TombRaider is getting played first.

3083d ago
MSBAUSTX3083d ago

I have no desire to buy Fallout 4 right now. I still need to finish the first tomb raider since I am only half way through it after downloading it from gold membership. Have the New Halo I've been playing like mad, haven't beaten the New Black Ops 3 I picked up today and I have been playing Bayonetta one and two that I got new from Target this week. Rise of the Tomb Raider is my next game purchase and I will also be getting Xenoblade Chronicles X. I think my open world, Action RPG, and my FPS fixes are covered for months. That being said I really don't have a need for Fallout 4 and would rather play Rise of the Tomb Raider instead anyway. Just too many great games in my back log and more to come that look more entertaining to me.

nix3083d ago

Don't bother finishing the first TR. I stopped in between because it couldn't hold me and i got it on PS+ too. I've tried going back several times but it's just a hollow experience.

Julion07153083d ago

Played the opening of tomb raider loving it can't wait to play tomorrow after work :( I have work early only reason I got off

TheXgamerLive3083d ago

I pre ordered both games for my Xbox One and I'm very happy they've both released now. This was an AWESOME decision in my book, in fact the only dumb idea was this biased article.

BTW-Im loving both. 90% plus reviews for both says this is a great time to be a gamer:)

FallenAngel19843084d ago

I hope this game releases on PS3. The original 2013 Tomb Raider reboot sold the best on that platform. It would be absurd for Square Enix to take the effort to develop a last-gen version of ROTR for 360 and not port it to the PS3

ninsigma3084d ago

Can't see it happening. Deals with MS aside, Support for last gen is already dwindling a lot. Consider then that the PS version releases a year from now, that support will be almost non existent and we'll have a hell of a lot more gamers moving to new gen. I'd imagine releasing on PS3 at that point would be pretty pointless. Especially considering it is probably the greatest effort to develop for due to the architecture.

Salooh3083d ago

You really are missing a great multiplatform experience . This gen BF is much better then last gen. It's like playing a pc version of last gen games and better at some cases. Same with other games. You need to upgrade , don't wait for just exclusives. 5x Better overall gaming experience in this gen.

NatFanBoyRestricted3083d ago

I'm sorry and not to come off wrong, but ps3,I don't think it's gonna happen. Not even a quality port. And with so much beautiful games on the new gen and good deals this holiday season, you should really make the upgrade. There's allot of new stuff and hardware to experience. I felt the same about my 360, cause I just missed gaming with my friend on there that didn't get a x1 as early as I did. But trust me, if your looking at something a year from now, you'll be better off just upgrading.

kdmitchell_toh3084d ago

Why is it dumb? You mean people can't play different types of games at the same time? They're two completely different games, I can't see why they both won't get play time, especially with the reported issues with Fallout 4 and the super positive reception of Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Hellsvacancy3084d ago

It's quite tough playing two games at the same time, two consoles, two tvs, two controllers oh and two pairs of hands

Sciurus_vulgaris3084d ago

Just play the shorter game first.

MSBAUSTX3083d ago

Just go to target and take advantage of their buy two get one free offer they have right now. $120 and you get Fallout 4 and rise of the tomb raider and another game for free. Problem solved, enjoy them all, and you're welcome.

Kalebninja3084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

I hate the automatic assumption that Tomb Raiders sales will fall because of Fallout. I really hate fallout's fanbase and the 'all other games are beneath it' attitude.

ninsigma3084d ago

Yes there is a huge elitist attitude amongst its fans. It was the same for MGS5 IMO. Can't really do anything about it. I just move along and ignore it. TR should see some good sales though. Think Ima be picking it up when it releases here. Looks great!

MSBAUSTX3083d ago

I agree with you. MGS5 had the same following and like a week or two later Halo 5 came out to sell like hot cakes and now BLack Ops 3 a week later is selling like hot cakes. Why in the hell won't it be the same for these two games? I for one have too many games to play and am saving my Open World fix for Xenoblade Chronicles X and will be getting Rise of the Tomb Raider instead.

iistuii3083d ago

Yep, but whilst they will be skipping frames & stuttering around their world of floating objects hardly hitting 25fps, I'll be on TR with Lara the new assassin...

Lighter93083d ago

After you beat TR and find everything (if you actually do that), I'll still be playing Fallout 4.

Kalebninja3083d ago

@Lighter9 Length of a game doesn't mean its better.

ninsigma3083d ago

Enjoy your game lighter, but there is no need for that. Not everyone wants fallout and they are entitled to express why they don't like it or that they prefer to play something else.

retrogamer093084d ago

I never understood this argument. If people want to play the game they will. Two totally different genres. Me personally I'm not a hardcore RPG guy so I'm selling my free copy of fallout. I'm a shooter/ action adventure type of guy which is why I've bought and already beaten Tomb Raider.

kraenk123084d ago

and sold it already as well?!

retrogamer093083d ago

I didn't even open it. Just not my type of game. I got it for free from a deal at best buy.

yezz3084d ago (Edited 3084d ago )

What does genre have to do with this if you want to play both games? I personally considered buying CoD this year, since I'm really missing some online action but I can play Fallout in 15 minutes so of course I'm not going to buy it now..

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai462d ago (Edited 462d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness460d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch460d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730460d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior460d ago (Edited 460d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot461d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto460d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior461d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B460d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws460d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730460d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69460d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

lelo2play841d ago (Edited 841d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY840d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing69840d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis840d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

ANIALATOR136840d ago

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.

ActualWhiteMan840d ago (Edited 840d ago )

The first one of the latest trilogy is a masterpiece

I'll take a copy of Shadow... Cheers.

Claim games by going to the website and login using ur credentials. I did the same as i couldnt use epic launcher. Also try reinstalling Epic Launcher I did it and it worked.
