Speed Test: New Xbox One Experience 2X As Fast As PS4 UI On Actions Tested

If a recent speed comparison between the upcoming new Xbox One UI, and the current PS4 UI is to be believed, the new Xbox One UI is twice as fast on several tasks.

It's a big improvement over the old one in terms of speed and accessibility that's for sure. The guide is the biggest improvement... people really missed that from 360 and they tried to get it back with the Snap Centre but it was just to slow.

Tbh, I still find the PS4 UI way more stable. The amount of times I have had to hard reset the X1, its ridiuclous. The new Ui should fare better but even then, yesterday I had a problem with it where it wouldn't show my installed games. Guess what I had to do fix the problem...yup you guessed it.

I agree, the preview built caused some hard resets with some versions. I had to hard reset the console several times the last weeks. But stability and spped should further improve after the official launch since they should use debug code for the preview that should not be necessary for the finalized version.

after watching that video it really shows how microsoft has managed to put things more together without so many button prompts to get around and do those things.

it really makes you wonder why they don't do these things at launch and who thought the old way would be best.

I was the same, I had my X1 in standby mode and when I turned it on the background image was gone. Had to hard reset to fix, if I'm trying to use the wireless my X1 wouldn't find it, hard reset to fix. Launch YouTube... Xbox restarts etc. There's been problems but to there credit they have fixed them very quickly but as long as it works at launch I'll be happy...

Yea snapping was awful. The new UI is way more user-friendly and everything is more straight-forward and accessible. It is very fast for sure and the new guide is sooo much quicker along with all the tasks that come along with it.

Anyone hear anything about when Cortana will be added? That should make the kinect a bit more useful.

@kingthrash360 re halo 5 install. The 35 minute install would actually be quick. The xbox one downloads updates and installs them when you first install a game. Halo 5 had a 9gb update. The ps4 handles the updates separately to the install.

To speed up install times on xbox one a good usb 3 drive helps, although it won't overcome the slow install due to large updates.

35 minutes!? That's super fast in comparison to what it took me. It took me like 5+hrs to play the game because I didn't know about the let the game install first and deny the update trick. And instead I let it update while installing and the sh't takes FOREVER!!!

Also, you people do know that with the PS4 you can just double tap the PS button and it'll take you back to whatever you was on last, so if I go to my friends list and double tap the PS button, I will end up back at the game and if I double tap it again, I will b at the friends list, so that way its even faster. And why did they just choose to compare these 3 things and not everything?

@azmatik that's the whole Point of the xbox one System architecture, it was designed from the beginning to do Things like that. snapped apps or the guide run in a different OS than the game does. it's a very complicated virtualized System. you guys can Claim your 50% more power all you want but meanwhile the xbox one is the console which Plays GTA V in 1080p (PS4 also does it in 1080p) but on xbox you could Play and use for example skype at the same time. app snapping on PS4, not going to happen, mark my word.

My take is Windows 10 came out around 3 months ago. The dash update is built around the windows 10 kernel so I see this update as right on time.

Micro improvements to the UI and features will always be necessary, but I have not felt that I have been without for two years.

A much better improvement for XBO. But it also helps everything is pinned to a quick menu, whereas on the PS4 you still have to go to the actual home page to access Friends / Message / etc... Regardless it's a much needed improvement on XBO.

Exactly...this isn't a 1:1 comparison of actions so it's kinda pointless. It reads more like a satire because all it's ultimately saying is that there's a one button press menu that has all of the included things in it as opposed to having to go deeper into the ps4 ui to find it. So it's not technically '2x as fast' in any of these areas, just more intuitive.

What would actually be worthy of making a video on is how long does it take to install & download games? Those are the two areas where XBO was severely lagging behind PS4, where gamers would waste a lot more time waiting for those things than they would hitting an extra button to pull up a friends list.

There is a few other hard drive setups to improve game load and install times by a ton, first one in bf4 to ready up, first one loaded in and running around in elderscrolls before everyone else, but I'll keep that a secret.

Are the consoles even optimized to take advantage of hybrid or pure SSD speeds? They wouldn't be able to take real advantage of what the drives can do--mind you, you would still see improvement, just not as much as it's able to do in something made for it.

That aside, good to see that the UI is fast and intuitive. It's a meaningless comparison though. It's like comparing a Bugatti Veyron to a Saleen S7: both are fast. More than satisfyingly so. They can get you where you need to go and arguing the differences in speed when they're both exceptional comes off as pretty silly.

I'll admit that the new Xbox One's UI is slightly faster than the PS4's UI. There's no denying that. Still, I really don't think something like this is going to impact people's purchasing decision. It's not something people are going to think about when they get a new console or they're purchasing a new console. No ones going to walk into gamestop and say "I'm going to get the Xbox One because the UI is 3 seconds faster than the PS4's UI!" lol.

I can't wait for this update. That's my biggest complaint with my Xbox One is the sluggish UI. This looks like an awesome improvement.

On a side note I couldn't agree with you more. I've had to hard reset my Xbox about once a week (sometimes several times a day but I'd say at least once a week minimum) since launch. The only way I can avoid this problem is turning off the instant on function. Without instant on function though you have to wait about 60 seconds for the Xbox to boot and then you might still have to wait on game updates to download which hinders the experience.

I'm hoping the new dashboard fixes some of the issues I'm having and I know others are experiencing as well. Other than that I've loved my time spent with my Xbox One.

The real win for the Xbox UI is they have smartly pulled things that used to be hidden in layers of button prompts into the for front....like your friends list loading on the first opening. That is 100% smart UI design. This is not a matter of the hardware this or that being better but its a matter of MS being very smart with their redesign.

This also is 100% something Sony "could do" to improve the experience for PS4 users but likely Sony will not. No doubt they feel the UI design is good enough for the user experience...and in all fairness, it is.

I am happy to see MS has made this change though because I feel this UI is a 100% improvement over the previous design.

That IS the whole point. They aren't comparing how fast the friends list loads once you click on it, they are comparing how fast you can get to these features from scratch while in a game.

It's a practical test of the time it would take you to get there in a real world situation.

When I go to my friends house with an xb1 I just bring my external with all of my games and profiles. On ps4 you have would have to open it up and take it out then install it in the other ps4 and when you do that your friends ps4 won't have his games profiles and saves on his/her ps4 anymore.
and background music? That's what I have a sound system for with Bluetooth. it's faster and more practical.

Kinda seems like a no-brainer here. You've got a slide-out panel with just color elements and no always loading elements (game icons, notification icons, background, etc.), no images versus Sony's old and "we won't ever get away from it because it's so awesome" graphic and info cluttered XMB.

MS utilizes the space of a true HD screen so much better than Sony, who seem to think everyone is still playing on 480i TVs.

Because they have big images and buttons with a focus on adding more elements that you have to scroll through off screen and items being relatively the same size as past generation UI elements instead of putting more text on screen when it will do. Sony's XMB is stuck in last generation when we don't need a big button for everything or a separate screen just to view friends or start a chat and the like.

Edit: Just think about it, should we still be viewing Web sites designed as they were in the 90s or do you like how they've evolved to take into account more viewing area?

software speaking the xbone should be the fastest thing in doing multitasking from any other O.S hardware, why ? well because this god damn thing has 3 O.S. installed each one of them for specific task, yes you hear that right 3 O.S. running at the same time(for games, apps and one that connects both), so knowing this multitasking should be a breeze, but as you can see at this comparison the difference is insignificant, the PS4 with one O.S and a specific low energy task processor can do all that and much more.

Depends on the type of drive you are using as well (for both systems) but the new XB1 UI is definitely better than the old one. I'd been using it for a while as part of preview and I don't even remember what the previous UI looks like lol. One thing though I wish they'd add is theme music like the PS4. I love turning it on and hearing the Destiny soundtrack (plus the button sounds). Sometimes I let it run just for that lol.

Really happy both of these systems are starting to hit their stride. I'm excited to see what Nintendo brings to the table with NX. Great time to be a gamer!

The Ui is nice, I'm in the preview. But I'd like the store sorted out a little clearer. If for eg go to store, click Fallout4 pre order, it takes me to the £74:99 version, where most people would either just pay that or say sod that, yet there's another two clicks before you get to the other versions. Now on PS4 I click Fallout4 & I get all the versions in front of me at the relevant prices. Just sort that out as it takes too many unnecessary clicks to get to what you want, the Ui itself is really nice.

For specific tasks (mainly dealing with friends) NXOE is definitely faster because of a good UI. However, PS4 is still snappier when it comes to loading apps and general movement. If Sony would ever get their act together and make some much needed adjustments, PS4 would destroy NXOE.
