Almost 2 Years In, Is Your Launch PS4 Still Running Strong?

If you bought a PlayStation 4 console at launch, is it still working fine? It would appear that the system's reliability is pretty darn impressive thus far.

Only issue is the occasional break in connection with the controllers (I've got 4, old and new so it's not on the controllers end).

I'm sure it's a software problem though.

It's running, but I have the occasional disc-spit problem, although luckily it hasn't happened in quite some time (knock-on-wood).

Also, 1 controller has become completely useless cause it keeps disconnecting with the PS4, as soon as I launch a game or whatever. In the dashboard it works fine, and as soon as you start anything it disconnects.

I already tried the numerous options listed online to fix it, but nothing worked... so that's a shame.

Yea its running strong but i did have to pry the eject button off the ps4 because it was defective kept trying to eject disks by its self and sony wanted 100+ to fix. I'm happy using controller to eject games for free fix

Yeah mine is still running strong, but you can tell that its starting to slow down and relax a little bit more. Joke, funny, haha!

Mine is a launch day one, and I've never had any of these weird problems people have. My controller's rubber did wear off in just 6 days though, but the replacement has been fine ever since. The only thing is, the fan did start to get louder recently (before the release of the beta 3.0) but now ever since the fw update it seems to be as quiet as it used to be.

I have only had 1 other PS system crash; my 60gig BC PS3 but I fixed it just enough to get gamestop to buy it for $230 lol. Bought the first slim model. My PS1 and 2 still work to this day. Seems a lot had the eject disc problem... I seen some of you say you broke the button and others say it still happens every now and then....the fix is simple there is a scew that you need to tighten down the side of the hdd bay....

Yeah the loudness is because of over heating due to dust ..I just use a q tip and compressed air....does the trick.

Yup still running cool and silent despite how warm my apartment gets (all our neighbours are from warmer climates and have their heating on even during the summer, so we are incredibly insulated, keep meaning to thank them for that XD).

The only time it kicks up a fuss, oddly enough, is when I'm in a menu. Like a start menu, or a pause menu e.g using the iDroid in MGS5 or something to that effect.

But it has done this since day one and I know it's not just me experiencing that.

It's quite baffling actually, does anyone more tech savvy than me know why this is?

Maybe the console uses this time where the processors aren't doing much to blast them with cool air? Who knows... maybe YOU do? Yes you, I'm talking to you!

The explanation I've heard is that many devs don't bother to limit the frame rate of the menus, and as a result it is actually doing a lot of rendering then

My launch PSX got to the point where I had to flip it updside down in order to get the game to run. I gave it to my brother shortly after. My launch PS2 ran perfectly fine. Just recently sold it to someone for $50. My launch PS3 is still running fine.

I didn't buy a PS4 at launch because like the PS3 didn't have crap worth of games that I was interested until a year later. It's only just starting to really pick up but I've had it almost a year now and still working fine.

PlayStation brand is once more dominant like ps1-ps2. PS3 was dominant in its own way. But ps4 is a different beats and if the rumored price drop takes place world wide than the demand for the system will only increase by a huge margin

sony said they expect ps4 to surpass 36.3 million by march 2016. so by december 31st 2016 we could see ps4 between 45-50 million

in about 3 years time if you can sell 45 plus million than that's amazing

Mine died within 2 months, would randomly restart so got a replacement in January but my replacement randomly ejects disc but that's it, only once in a while so no real issue, oh and it's louder since rocket league was played on it but it still works.

Take off your hdd cover look down the side of the hdd bay and you should see a little screw between the plastics, tighten that and it will solve the eject issue.

One thing about Sony, when they make something, they make it right.

From walkman to ps4, never has a Sony product ever malfunctioned on me.

As far as Ps4 is concerned, I'm going to apply a white carbon vinyl on my Ps4 tunring it from basic black to carbon white. Like the destiny ps4.

Most of my electricals are sony, got them from discount places online and they're all going strong. The only thing that let me down was the Wifi dongle for the TV, it was three years old though.

Had 4 laptops break within a year, 1 used to give out pretty string static shocks, which worked better than a coffee in the morning!

The bravia had terrible picture and took Sony 2 months to fix (it's still working now!)

Ah that brings back memories. I still have my original PS1 and after a few years I did have to turn it upside down although that was fine since I got a PS2 within a week of having to do that.

What was even stranger was my PS2 started to have problems when I had just purchased a first release PS3 and that one is still working fine.

As for my PS1 well that is gathering dust since all PS3's can play PS1 games so there really is no need for it.

The quality of all next generation consoles is vastly improved over the last. My PS4 does occassionally sound like a jet taking off but its still going strong as well

By any chance does it sound like a jet mostly when you are navigating in-game menus? This has been my experience. I've always been curious as to the reason why, I figure it's something along the lines of using this low-proces heavy moment to give the console a good blast of cool air, but I could be wrong.

The only time my original PS3 sounds like a jet is when I play Wizardry (PS2) since that was on CD not DVD. All my other PS1/PS2 games play fine and I hardly get any disk noise.

Mine runs fine, but when I put a disk in it sometimes makes this annoying on off sound "on disk spin... Off on disk spin" over and over .. Not sure what it's looking for on the disk when the game is on the hdd... It's done it since I put a faulty batman disk in. Didn't notice till after the game wouldn't play (the entire one spot of the edge of the disk had imperfections on it) never seen that in my 20 plus years of gaming.

I took the extended warranty, probably will give them a call before it expires

To this day I still occasionally play on my original PlayStation and PS2.
Sadly, I was one of the unlucky ones who got their PS3 hard drives corrupted (NOT BRICKED!) by an update about 2 years ago. Despite being past the warranty, Sony was willing to replace the drive, but I had so much porn installed on it I was ashamed to mail it in :'( . Still worked perfectly with games, believe it or not, but Uncharted 2 (only 2) sputtered and made noises and was generally unplayable. The real problem was the PS3 no longer could save system settings and was stuck at 480p.
So I bought a used PS3.
My PS4 has had no real problems. I think the auto-eject problem some had was due to the heat-sensitive buttons and dust and microbes. Just keep your consoles clean, including the fan.

Hah, I have dropped my PS3 (slim) accidentally and its still working. Though ever since that incident it hasnt read BD movies (except once when I tried to demonstrate the issue to ly friend). Games run with no problem.

I almost lost my mind when I started hearing some pretty weird and loud sounds when the PS3 was on but thankfully the sound was caused by the platform where the PS3 sits. Had to tighten few screws and the nasty sounds went away.

LOL If you want to watch movies it is usually best to put them on a portable drive and then use your PS3 to play them. Less embarrassment if you need to get your machine serviced and also very practical since 2.5" portable 1TB drives are fairly cheap. ;-)

This seems like a really pointless article, either that or it's simply fishing for "broken console" comments. I'm sure most of the people on here know perfectly well how to look after their consoles, especially if they bought them with their own money.

I always ensure mine are dusted regularly and they sit on a flat table in a well ventilated area. Hell even my original 360 worked perfectly until a few months after I sold it on to someone else, so take that anyway you feel. In short if I'm spending £400 on a piece of tech, you better believe I'm going to treat it with the care and respect it deserves and do everything possible on my end to ensure it's longevity.

My (well, our, was both mine and my bros, i was 18) launch day 360 was an absolute beast, my brother even dropped it down a flight of stairs once and it never gave in once (okay it crashed once playing Condemned).

Then he traded it in for a newer model, can't remember which one (it was black, but was before casings redesign, jaded memory) and it died within the year. As did every replacement one he got after.

I bought my own 360 just before GTA IV launched, and same issues, in fact it died the day I got GTA IV, soon as I put in the disc XD I got it to run for a few months longer by removing the casing entirely (risky business!)

I miss you, Launch Day Xbox360, you were a champion among 360's. Wherever you are, I hope you're happy... May your obsolete component cables see you on your way.

What does that have to do with anything, genius? The overwhelming majority of hardware malfunctions are defects like RRoD, bricked systems due to updates, etc. that have very little - if anything - to do with how you take care of it.

My PS4 has run well since launch day 1...

However, I have experienced random disc ejaculation, even when there was no disc inserted my PS4 would attempt to auto eject. I discovered the issue was the rubber strip beneath would expand when that part of the console got warm, thus impacting the touch sensitive eject button.

I removed that small part of the rubber strip, and it hasn't occured since. Sony have changed the touch sensitive buttons to a press action method with the newest PS4 revision. I've been very satisfied with PS reliability all-in-all /

When my ps4 started doing that I put it on its side and it stopped completely, I think it was the little rubber bits making the console warp slightly in the middle putting pressure on the eject.

Yes, although the fan has definitely gotten louder. The biggest problem I have is continued use has annihilated one of my controllers. I should really buy caps for the analog sticks but I keep forgetting.

I also shouldn't be surprised as this comes from heavy usage. I think EA Sports UFC did a majority of the damage to the sticks.

my disk drive broke at some point over the past 6 months. went to use it one day and I heard a grinding noise 2 or 3 times while it tries to run the disk, then it spits it back out at me.

huge pain in the ass because I used it as a DVD player a lot. I dont game on it much so I'm not going to get it fixed, I'll just play digital for the rest of its lifespan.

Also when I play Planetside 2 it sounds like a jet engine. but i think thats by design.

had an issue with both my launch DS4 that the R2 button isnt as sensitive as it should be, and its maximum depress is less than that of my new one, so the the launch ones i cant play driving games as it will never be full throttle, ( i measured the sensitivity on pc) other than that the system still works perfectly.

Launch model? I guess you had some bad luck with that. Wasnt there some news around/before the launch that the place that was assembling the PS4's had a minor "protest" where the mistreated employees purposely botched the assembly? They used too little thermal paste or something...

Yeah, I think this gen may just be much more reliable than the previous.

Hell, maybe its going to be better than PS2 (which has a decent amount of problems) or around the same as PS1 which AFAIK only had some decent problems in the launch models (on the long run) and some of the PSOnes were more prone to breaking.

From the looks of it, the biggest problems have come from the firmware updates and not from hardware related issues. The only noteworthy issue that I can remember is that some people have reported having issues with the touch buttons but even that has been pretty easy to fix.

My PS4 is year old and its the first minor HW variant (the one with some changes to the wireless stuff). Havent experienced any problems with it.

I compared to PS2 also because it seems that every PS2 model has some problems but nothing major. Most are fixable by little effort but still at times it feels like PS2 is plagued by these "little" issues. PS3 has probably more major problems and less minor so PS4 is no doubt going to surpass it.

I have two PS2's and both have issues and none are some of the earliest models. They are somewhere in the middle when it comes to the hardware revisions.

My phat one's plastic teeth are too worn (moves the laser) and slim has a bunch of issues. First the lid buttons were getting stuck, then the sensors wouldnt recognize that I had closed the lid, now the spindle motor was about to give up (had to CRC it, now its functional) and the laser has something funny going on (have to decrease the laser "power" so its not because the laser is dying...)

On top of all that, now the ribbon cable (connected to the laser) is scratching the discs. Should be an easy fix though.

Also my friend bought a used PS2 slim (the absolute last model sony ever produced, funny enough its half matte/half shiny like the launch PS4) which was very little used. Its now too acting up slightly... apparently scratched few discs and sometimes its very loud.

Well I've had all the PS versions. The PSX I had to put at a 135 degree angle to play discs. PS2 had to be placed only in the horizontal position and PS3 yellow light of death. PS4 will do something, but as of now I can't complain.

Sony released a PS2 based system that had DVR and media functions, it even had the XMB and it was called the PSX. As far as I know it only launched in Japan, but still that is a thing so I think using PSX when thinking of PS1 is confusing. :/

I have 2 and the one I use the most is the one I travel with . It gets banged up in its travel case every week and I havent had one issue yet . I did break a trigger button on one of my controllers but they fixed it and I put it into a different compartment now so no issues with that since moving it in January

I wasn't able to get one at launch unfortunately, but last September I bought a white Destiny PS4. No problems at first, but after a week and a half it died. Got up in the morning and went to play, and it wouldn't turn on. It was fine when it was turned off the night before, but I'm guessing the power supply blew out or something overnight. Took it back to the Wal-Mart I got it from, and they swapped it out for the last Destiny bundle they had. Been a little over over a year now and everything works perfect on the replacement.
