Titanfall team celebrates passing 10 million players

Respawn celebrates the passing of 10 million unique players for their new IP, Titanfall.

Gazondaily3121d ago (Edited 3121d ago )

Congratulations Respawn. Well deserved. And to think, some people said this didn't sell

Wow this is Major News!!! Congrats Respawn!

4Sh0w3121d ago (Edited 3121d ago )

Congrats to Respawn, I've said for a long time now that vg chartz sales data used to downplay games like Titanfall and SSO aren't accurate.

Now just like that we see Titanfall has been a helluva success for Respawn, EA, and Xbox.

vg chartz current sales total= 4.4m
http://www.vgchartz.com/gam...

Actually Titanfall has sold 10 million= vgchartz are waaaay off.

-Wow. Again congrats to all parties involved....I enjoyed the game, just couldn't stay with it as I thought it needed a little more variety.

Edit...It may be unique players, he didn't clarify either way the game has been very successful for them.

Gazondaily3121d ago

It is. 10 million people playing Titanfall is great. Shame the player numbers dipped so drastically. The sequel has sooo much potential though. Add more titans, more customisations and weapons and this will be amazing.

Mind you, the more you add of the above the less likely it.will be well balanced.

Still, good on respawn on achieving that number (unique player numbers or otherwise). Now I hope Titanfall 2 gets the support it deserves from Sony and really flourishes, especially with the strong PS4 platform.

3121d ago
Foehammer3121d ago

Indeed

10 million is BIG sales, far greater than most games.

Even established IPs often don't reach 10m.

Much higher than most ppl thought.

A real success story.

Congrats Respawn.

And EA said the X1 was the platform that sold the most versions.

nix3120d ago

Hahahahahahahahahagahmgaga.. Septic.

NewMonday3120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

this only counts the registered accounts not sales, even if someone just tried it for 5 minutes it is counted. if someone logged in on a separate online account it is counted. if someone tried it on EA Access or the free weekend on Origin it is counted.

F2P games usually have millions of registered players but income only comes from a fraction.

@Foehammer & 4Sh0w

slowdown guys and read the update on the story :p

Major_Glitch3120d ago

Hahahahahahahahahaha! What am I always saying about reading the article first? Wow, 10 million unique players...for an fps...that's been out over a year...on THREE DIFFERENT platforms...that was given away for free and heavily discounted and is now on EA Access. Um...yeah. Back to the clouds with you lot.

hiredhelp3120d ago

Actually i like this whole players to how many sold thing, It gives you a idea how many they might sold how much they could pulled in but most importantly how active the games still are like Titanfall.

AceBlazer133120d ago

So that week EA had the game free on pc, and I signed in do I count to that 10 mil?

Just like anything Microsoft related, choice words that dance around fact to delude a fanbase.

Major_Glitch3120d ago

@Ace Yes to both. You are counted as one on the 10 million unique players. And yes, more PR speak to try to DELUDE a fanbase that's DESPERATE for good news.

Kemo_Spear3120d ago

My question is how did Septic get this troll bait approved? He posted it with a misleading header, that right there should have made this article fail or get sent back, yet it gets passed.
But to keep my post on topic:
I am sure that there are some indy games alone on the PS4 that has had over 10 million players (resogun comes to mind for starters). This "story" is just spin trying to make something that did not fair so well look good.

jebabcock3120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

Anyone who thought this was even a remote indication of sales needs to do some basic math. That's almost as many x1 consoles as exist currently. That number in sales would be the single biggest announcement ms and respawn could tout, if it were indeed enjoying such good fortune. Instead we have heard almost nothing about the game for the past year. At best it means it sold really well for pc. But likely is the result of free trial weekends etc. The number being reported is just another dishonest marketing tactic. We need to get better at recognizing such.... it is as silly as someone claiming Halo 4 outsold halo 3 the other day because they completely misread a 2013 article.

Aside from that it is interesting that 10 million people have given the game a go.. unfortunately numbers indicate most weren't driven to purchase after trying it out.

Foehammer3120d ago

We all knew TitanFall was a huge success, EA made it clear in a previous statement:

http://www.polygon.com/2014...

"Three games led that performance, according to EA. Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall, EA DICE's Battlefield 4 and EA Canada's FIFA 14 are three of the five best-selling titles in the West across all platforms in 2014 so far; the publisher did not provide specific sales numbers. Digital net revenue came in at $491 million for the fourth quarter and $1.83 billion for the full year."

For EA to put TitanFall ahead of established franchises like Battlefield 4 and FIFA is a real feather in Respawn's cap.

Naturally everyone knows that VGCartz doesn't track digital sales.

Of course the HIGHEST rated FPS on next gen consoles is a huge success.

Crimzon3120d ago

Weird that moderators have been so eager to edit the article and claim that this is about players rather than sales, when there is nothing in the tweet to indicate that. I wonder what Christopher knows that Vince Zampella, Respawn & EA don't?

Seems kinda suspicious, to be honest. The correct and honest way to present the article and news is exactly as it is, with the quote stating that they're celebrating 10 million, with no personal bias trying to dictate whether that's players or sales at all. Journalism and reporting should always favor truth over personal bias, trying to twist and distort facts to suit personal agendas is poor form.

Fact: Vince Zampella posts tweet stating, "Celebrating 10 million! Thanks to everyone, we love you all!"

Lies: "Respawn celebrates the passing of 10 million unique players for their new IP, Titanfall."

More lies: "Respawn doesn't report sales, but unique players. Tweet is an update on total players, not sales. Information updated to represent that fact. -Christopher"

Twisting news is pretty shameful. It should be presented honestly and as-is. It's interesting to see the bias with which kinds of comments in this article are allowed, and which are punished as well.

kreate3120d ago

Kemo_Spear3120d ago

...and here we go again with the awesome Mods on knowing more than the community. I know that I will be banned for this post & it will be marked as "spam" (that is a buzz word for something that the mods hate and do not want the rest of the world to see because it makes them look bad. God complex that they have ya know). But after seeing this amazingly bias post that never should have been approved make it to the boards, I have to say something.
I have submitted stories that have been killed by the admins. When I PM the admins that killed them and asked why, I get responses like "go through the article and check yourself, don't just blindly report things.." (kind of like this article we have here). Or, this response from that all knowing Christopher " I'm not here to hand hold when someone fails to do things. I'm here to make sure it gets done right." Yeah buddy, you got this story right didn't you?

My point being, the mods and approvals of articles needs to be overhauled. Is this a personal attack? Could be considered one, or it could be considered constructive criticism. Either way, The mods are a joke here and their bias is showing in spades as they try to do damage control on this massive FUBAR "story".
I can sense the ban coming, so I am copying & pasting my response and saving it.
N4G home of the bias Mods & censorship.
Game on all.

Crimzon3120d ago

Oh look at that, this article has now mysteriously disappeared from the front page despite being the "hottest" active article right now. So the mods make a blatantly biased blunder and now that people are questioning them this article suddenly vanishes from the front page?

Well, I guess that's easier than admitting that they made a mistake.

700p3120d ago

This is great news indeed! Whether it sold 10mil or it just has 10mil unique users, it still shows a lot of people bought the game. Congrats to respawn!

Congratulations to Respawn for an incredible game. Hopefully, this will keep all the haters quite. Congratulations to MS for helping Respawn build an incredible game.

Gazondaily3121d ago

Yeah no doubt the biggest chunk I reckon came from the Xbox and to be honest, Microsoft deserve the credit here too because :

Rookie_Monster3121d ago (Edited 3121d ago )

Definitely. It is an amazing game for a first wave type of game and the review scores and this 10 million milestones indicated as such.

With this info, it basically means the XB1 is a viable platform for third party publishers.

And congrat Respawn and looking forward to part 2.

kreate3121d ago (Edited 3121d ago )

@septic

Thanks for the link.
I did not know that happened.

Im 1 of the that 10 mil btw. X1 version got it on sale for $15. Haven't got around to playing it though.

VforVideogames3121d ago

I play this game on a daily basis since day one, Last Titan Standing is my favorite.

Well done Respawn. Awesome game just wish there was a little more too it. I can only imagine how great Titanfall 2 will be :)

TheBurger293121d ago

Just imagine the stories that could be told in that universe, such potential for the 2nd game.

kickerz3121d ago

Yea a story campaign would be sweet. The actual online gameplay was flawless, always got great connections, fast and fluid. Selling 10 million copies definitely should help make Titanfall 2 a beast.

hulk_bash19873121d ago

Congrats Respawn, I enjoyed playing it when it first came out. Now please release a sequel with a proper single player campaign. I would love to see a flesh out story for this interesting mech-filled world you've created

Paytaa3121d ago

Best shooter I've played in years. So much potential with Titanfall. Move over CoD.

CaptainObvious8783121d ago

Very impressive for a new IP. Well done.

user99502793121d ago

This game was a commercial failure, isn't that right playstation fans?!!!?

Also Forza and Halo and anything else on xbox. but Driveclub and The Order and Infamous and Killzone were a smashing success!

*leaps head first into traffic*

MRoONEPINCHx3121d ago

Also they cant wait for titanfall 2 on their platform even though the first was rubbish :P

BlackTar1873120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

Lol you are a funny man. Bet you had the biggest smile on your face when posting that.

The Games fun but lacks content. Looking forward to tf2 . bye I'm a primary ps4 gamer.

Congrats respawn now bring on the sequel with a story mode and no bots.

kyzer19783120d ago

10 million players, not sales. Get it together there sparky.

coolbeans3121d ago

Double-backing on this, I don't see any further clarification from Zampella clarifying his "congrats on 10 million" remark. Well...that could mean sales OR unique users now that you think about it.

C'mon Septic, I at least figured you'd be more careful with your titles.

Gazondaily3120d ago

Crap sorry. I copied NeoGaf. I actually confused unique numbers and sales in my head too. Apologies.

3-4-53121d ago

Does EA Access count for that or no ?

3-4-53121d ago

EA Access = players without direct sales so that needs to be factored in as well.

Still pretty cool though.

I got bored of Titanfall quickly but it's a solid base to build the next game off of.

Ark_3120d ago

... also free weekends on Origin. Just saying.
Congrats to Respawn anyway.

Utalkin2me3120d ago

I have no clue how you guys are getting 10 mil unique players confused with 10 mil sold. It's not even remotely the same. Unique players means multiple account users on Xbox and Steam. It even takes in the fact of people that have played the demo.

But congrats to Respawn for what they have accomplished.

Major_Glitch3120d ago

@Septic and the Titanfall Cheerleaders: ROFL!!! How embarrassing for you all. It seems the "Xbox Defense Force" has developed a taste for CROW this gen. So let me get this straight, sales matter again? Because if we're using sales figures as a metric for success, then please remind me which console has the sales lead again.
On Topic: 10 million players? Um...congratz? I didn't realize 10 million players for an fps that's been out for over a year on three DIFFERENT platforms was such a HUGH deal.

Keltech3120d ago

Lol is like watching someone cheer because a player on their favorite team ran the wrong way and scored a safety for the opposite team. Smh

_-EDMIX-_3120d ago

"And to think, some people said this didn't sell"

....

"passing 10 million players"

deadpoolio3163120d ago

Must have missed the 10 million unique players FACT and not 10 million in sales of the game...BTW it still didn't sell massively on THREE platforms...

3120d ago
showtimefolks3120d ago

Septic

Update
Respawn doesn't report sales, but unique players. Tweet is an update on total players, not sales. Information updated to represent that fact. -Christopher

not some people but that's an actual fact. it didn't sell as well it it should have

if this game would have sold 8 to 10 million than EA would be all over announcing the sale number

Bigpappy

it sold so well that the sequel is coming to ps4. go figure

Gazondaily3120d ago

"it sold so well that the sequel is coming to ps4. go figure"

Because the whole franchise was supposed to be exclusive right?

I cant wait till TF2 hits PS4 so the fanboy hate can stop against this.

Major_Glitch3120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

@Septic Pro-Tip: You should probably READ articles before you post them. Just sayin. Also, please remind me, are we using sales figures as a metric for success? It's always so hard to tell with you lot.
EDIT: Septic...you do realize you've given the TF "haters" more ammo right? Really should've read the article first. Oh well.

Gazondaily3120d ago

@Major

"@Septic Pro-Tip: You should probably READ articles before you post them"

Err it was a Tweet. The heading on NeoGaf was the same as what I put. You should read before you post. The update above says it all ;) Christopher himself has decided that, that is the more appropriate headline lol

As for the metric for success, no I think the game's quality is important. Did you ever get to play it or were you deprived of the experience?

Sparta073120d ago Show
DarXyde3120d ago

Bigpappy,

You could also make the argument that the game was, after it was implied that it would be multiplatform, sworn off by Xbox gamers saying it got old.

Obviously, it did not need platforms beyond Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC to be successful; those platforms are very likely to have Titanfall's demographic in abundance.

Be that as it may, the game could have been even more successful if it released on another platform of great consumer interest.

@user1049- "Funny how every claimed this game was a failure using VGchartz to "prove" it only sold 3 million. (Total between all consoles) Guess this goes to show how stupid arguing mindlessly about sales is. Maybe this will stop them from continuing to spew innaccurate info about sal-"

....."passing 10 million players" not sales...

maniacmayhem3120d ago

The original headline and story did not say this. It actually said it was about sales.

This is why we are seeing a lot of comments for and against.

OpieWinston3121d ago

I figured it was 10 million Titanfall sales when I saw Vince post that tweet. Pretty amazing for a New IP. It's a very addicting game that doesn't make you want to turn it in.

Here's hoping Titanfall 2 sells 10 million more.

Respawn Entertainment is Discontinuing Sales of Original Titanfall

Sales for the original Titanfall are being discontinued.
It will be pulled from subscription services on March 1, 2022.

Ethereal868d ago

Physical media. Unfortunately the way games are going these days game servers will eventually be shut down and you can stare at the menu and wish you could play the game again.

littletad868d ago

This is why reading is so important. Nothing to do with digital or physical media. The game, which is online only, is being delisted because of DDOS and other hacker attacks. The case got so bad that only six players in the world log on. For PC. Rather than fix it, they continued to sell the game, broken as it is, and only now just decided to call it quits. But please, go on thinking what you will.

Ethereal866d ago

I'm aware of the DDOS attacks and that this case is not typical. This game would eventually have it's servers shutdown regardless of the current situation so that is a moot point. My comment was in a general sense and that there are instances in which games can be preserved physically when official support ends.

Let's recap your first sentence. I said, "the way GAMES are going these days" indicating a broader stroke than just this game. I agree, reading IS important. I was simply stating the obvious downsides of the digital marketplaces and online only trends in games these days. I could even make the argument that the online only offering which has allowed hacker manipulation has impacted the preservation of this great game. My comment is valid in the general sense and thank you for your permission to continue to think what I will.
