Are PS4 gamers getting the better end of the stick with Rise of the Tomb Raider?

"All I'm saying is that things aren't always as they seem. Whilst many PS4 owners were rightly frustrated initially about the whole situation, Crystal Dynamics owes them an apology and it might just do that with what could be a more polished product that will offer a better value for money."

Gamespresso's Steve argues that it might not be all Tomb and gloom for PS4 owners in regard to Lara's new adventure.

Yeah, I have an Xbox One and am really looking forward to this game, but I'm really thinking about waiting for the PS4 'Definitive Edition' or something like that. It comes out a year later so it's bound to have received some extra work / DLC.

Sonyslave33126d ago

And u do know that the Definitive edition aka game of the year edition is also going to be on xbox one and pc lol smh have fun waiting on game I be playing this year.

Nyxus3126d ago

But the PS4 version might also be improved in terms of performance.

Gazondaily3126d ago

Nothing wrong with waiting a year. Besides, Uncharted will be out early-ish next year. Although by then, the hype for TR will die out because well (1) Uncharted and (2) Time

StanLee3126d ago

Don't care how you spin it, waiting a year for the game if you only have a PS4 console and are a fan of the game is ridiculous and unfair. It's not better for anyone.

Kingthrash3603126d ago

It's equal.
Xbox= get the game when it's new and at it most hyped
Ps4=get it when its old less hype but most likely come with dlc and with better frames/resolution.

Crystal dynamics will NEED to improve the PS4's version of Rise of the tomb raider, otherwise it will sell poorly guaranteed.
If they're gonna make ps4 gamers wait a whole year for their game they better have some seriously tempting additions to it or it won't be selling much until it hits the bargain bin a couple months later.

dirkdady3125d ago

I'm sure everyone's thinking this but I just have to say it - How much no life do you have to have take the time to create a troll account like "sonyslave" with the sole purpose of being a microsoft shill full time on n4g expending countless hours.

thekhurg3125d ago

I'll be too busy playing other stuff. But hey, enjoy your timed exclusive!

@Septic do you see how you kind of contradicted yourself? In this reply you say 'Nothing wrong with waiting a year... the hype for TR will die out" and then you go on to comment "How would they? PS4 users lose out for a year. That sucks."...

TitanUp3126d ago

I am a PS4 gamers and honestly I don't care to wait a year. I have 8 games pre ordered this fall anyways. I wouldn't have time to play Tomb Raider even if the game came out this year on PS4.

Harryseveruspotter3126d ago

Ps4 version might be improved...!!!!

user99502793126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

Xbox gamers can easily wait for the definitive edition just like PS4 gamers will do. The difference being, Xbox gamers have a choice whether to play it now or later.

Not rocket science. Arguing Playstation gamers wins this one is actually laughable. Illustrates clearly how pathetically twisted the community has become.

@below

not directed at you at all. Just a general comment.

I mean, I guess the PS4 version "could" have graphical improvements.... but that's just speculation. I seriously doubt it will be anything worth talking about. As usual with multiplats you will probably be looking through a magnifying glass to see any difference. Seems like a moot point.

Nyxus3126d ago

Not sure if this is directed at me, but as I said, I do have an Xbox One, so I could get the game right away as well. But since I know there will be an improved version in a year, I'm not sure I should do it. Yes, GOTY editions are very common, but the PS4 version could also have improved graphics as opposed to just the DLC included.

Automatic793126d ago

Love how the hypothetical questions are being asked at this point in time. Lol Watch the usual suspects give the same answers, for instance, I will wait to next year, I will get it on PC, we will get the definitive edition. Its hilarious. The funny thing is the real world outside of this website will be buying TombRaider along with other fantastic games for the holidays.

chrisco84au3125d ago (Edited 3125d ago )

I agree with the 'usual suspects' part of your comment, that's N4G.

But the 'real world' will be buying MGSV Fallout 4, Halo, Uncharted Collection, Black Ops, Battlefront and Sports Games (Madden, FIFA, 2k). They are the games the 'people outside this website' buy in huge quantities, not Tomb Raider (evidence, the last 8 or so years of sales data and the last Tomb Raiders sales figure, which launched on 2 consoles, one of which sold ALOT more copies, tip - it wasn't the MS console, that's a big deal)

You are seriously overestimating the selling power of Tomb Raider in this day and age. It will release, get deserved high reviews and them sell maybe 700 thousand copies on XBONE. I have no doubt it will be an amazing game but it's on dire straights.

It was in trouble when it became exclusive (for a year), took a hit when Uncharted 4 was delayed, faded into obscurity when it realised it is releasing the same holiday period as the games I mentioned above (plus many more) and decided to give in, assume the fetal position and cower in a corner when Fallout announced they would release the same day.

So no, Sony do not 'win' anything with Tomb Raider but releasing a year later, with all DLC, bug fixes, patches and maybe enhanced visuals and performance at the same price is also in no way a bad thing.
YES no doubt the GOTY edition will be on XBONE but are people really going to buy this twice for the same system? That just doesn't happen. So playing that card is pointless.

fermcr3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

Like every game, if you are willing to wait, you will always get a better deal for a game.
If you don't mind waiting, go for the GOTY version of every game... or better yet, wait for the remaster version of every game on the next gen console.

Personally, I don't like waiting. If it's a game I really want to play, I like to play it when launches.

Rookie_Monster3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

@NYXUS,

Dude, many AAA games these days have GOTY edition coming out a year later like Dragon Age Inquisition and even LOTR Shadow of Mordor or even Taken King with all the DLCs included. No doubt Arkham Knight, Witcher 3, and FO4 also have the same thing next year as well with a complete version. I see no one is talking about waiting a year to play those games when they have the proper hardware to play them on release.

If you are a two console owners, if you want to play the game, why wait for a year when you can probably grab it for like $30-$40 during the Holidays sales for these games and use the same strategy for DLCs to complet the total package way before a year later?

Me as a PC and owner of both consoles, I am not waiting as Tomb Raider is looking like a great game.

Nyxus3126d ago

I haven't decided yet. I might get the Xbox One version of this game, or I might wait for the PS4 version. Not sure yet.

gangsta_red3126d ago

"But the PS4 version might also be improved in terms of performance."

So patches don't exist anymore? And there wouldn't be any performance improvements for Xbox One?

And why wouldn't a definitive edition also come out for the Xbox One too in a year? Like every other game?

It's really strange how people are just assuming that improvements will ONLY be made for the PS4 version and somehow the X1 version will be treated as the red headed cousin.

Nyxus3126d ago

No, because it wouldn't be the first multiplatform game that runs better on PS4.

gangsta_red3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

Like a comment above mentioned, if there are any so called improvements made for PS4 then you and others will be waiting for Digital Foundry or some other site to tell you exactly what those very small differences are.

If that is what you want then yes, you should wait a year and pick up the PS4 version of the game.

Gazondaily3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

How would they? PS4 users lose out for a year. That sucks.

-Foxtrot3126d ago

People will probably end up getting a version of the game which has all the DLC included along with any possible fixes which need patched.

gangsta_red3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

Like the definitive edition that would also be available for the Xbox One?

Or is there some kind of Sony only deal for this?

Spotie3126d ago

@gangsta: Given that nearly every multiplat this gen has run better on PS4- the last Tomb Raider among them- the XB1 version isn't likely to be the same definitive version as the PS4 one.

gangsta_red3126d ago

@Spotie
Lol, yes, because nearly every multiplat game was so horribly different on the Xbox One compared to PS4. /s

Given that nearly every multiplat has ran 'slightly' and 'minutely' better, to recent games actually running slightly better on X1 do you really actually think the PS4 will run better?

I'm sure you will wait for Digital Foundry or some other site to actually tell you this, because you yourself will never see the difference.

Rookie_Monster3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

Spotie, the XB1 is confirmed to be 1080p and 30fps so how much more definitive can the PS4 version be? It is not like a similiar game like Uncharted 4 is running at 60fps and Tomb Raider will be magically be 60fps on PS4. Even games like Witcher 3, Batman Arkam Knight and MGSV, you can hardly tell any difference even when the XB1 version is at 900p and 1080p games like Mad Max, NBA 2k16, and Destiny are virtually identical.

The PC version will be the definitive version if you really want to make a big deal out of it. But since you don't have a XB1 or a gaming rig, I fully understand your situation of trying to defend and hyped up the one year late version for your console. If it is the other way around, you would of course be saying something different.

can't the same thing be said for any game? this rule could also be applied to buying a console. in a years time the xbox one/ xbox 360 version and pc will likely be cheaper then too. there is a reason why most sales occur in the beginning, people want to play it as early as possible.

Gazondaily3126d ago

Yeah but that guy ripped into him for waiting a year. Gamers still lose out. But they still have to wait.

Fro_xoxo3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

as a gamer, one year is long time to wait.

If a 'game of the year' edition were to release with all the DLC included. It would release on all platforms.
By then, XO players won't be discussing Tomb Raider.

Relientk773126d ago

Maybe I'll get it when it's cheaper but first I'm getting:

Uncharted 4
Ratchet and Clank
Horizon Zero Dawn
The Last Guardian
Star Ocean 5
Yooka Laylee
Dragon Quest XI
Final Fantasy XV

so Tomb Raider isn't even near the top of my list

TheGreatGamer3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

Of course they're not! Xbox One users will get the game early by a whole year! Contrary to those who say 'we'll get the definitive version' and so on, Xbox One and the gaming media will be all over Tomb Raider THIS YEAR and then when it comes to PS4, it's kind of spoiled due to all the news/walkthroughs/gameplays etc. Not going to lie though, the deal kind of sucks especially considering myself and I'm sure many others associate TR with the Playstation brand but even though it sucks, downplaying it isn't going to do any good, the deal's already been made.

TKCMuzzer3126d ago

Important thing to note: Tombraider is releasing amongst a very congestive period. Gamers with small wallets will have to choose and Tombraider may become a victim of that. On your point, I can't help feeling that Fallout 4 , COD, Halo 5 and Battlefront will gain more media attention than Tombraider.

Automatic793126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

TKCMuzzer you are right it is releasing in a congested period of time but if you look at the overall picture, the other games around TombRaider's release are shooters with heavy online components (Which I love)I feel TombRaider is actually coming out at a fantastic time. Note To all the Sony heads reading this I will play TombRaider this year on Xbox and Uncharted in March on PS4 followed by Quantum Break in April on Xbox One. I pity those of you with excuses galore against Xbox One. The games coming out on both are going to be great the next 14 months.

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

isarai466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness464d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch464d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730464d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior464d ago (Edited 464d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot465d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto464d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior465d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B464d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws464d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730464d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69464d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol
