Will PS3 Be Remembered As The Worst PlayStation Ever?

Where will PlayStation 3 rank on the Sony console list when all is said and done? Is there any doubt that it will be rated well behind PS1, PS2 and PS4?

Well, I'll be honest... the PS3 didn't have the best start ever. The price was too high for the average consumer. As the time went by though, the PS3 came to be something real nice to have.

With titles like Uncharted 2, The last of us, Journey, little big planet, demon souls etc. I doubt it. It didn't have the perfect start but hell did it deliver amazing experiences that couldn't be found on other consoles.

I personally agree, i came to like the PS3 last gen but I would take either of the other two any day.

None of the PS console can ever be considered "the worst". All 3 have been extremely successful in one way or another.

The PS1 ushered gaming to the mass audience, and paved the way for tons of classic iconic franchises.

The PS2 is the best selling console of all time, and had one of the largest libraries of games ever.

The PS3 had a rough start (due to price & lack of accessible hardware), but it went on to deliver the 2 most critically praised games of the last-generation, and of all time, and brought with it many more genre defining and noteworthy games.

Was the PS3 less successful financially and sales total wise, yes. But none of those console can ever be considered "worst", because there hasn't been a bad PlayStation console.

Now if we count everything, then the Vita unfortunately falls into that category. The Vita isn't bad, but it most definitely hasn't lived up to the potential it was given at launch. To this day lack of AAA franchises, true handheld exclusives, and overpriced proprietary memory cards held it back.

i see the ps3 as the beginning of an end. it forced sony to finally adapt to the outside world and make hardware meant for developers, not them. all that proprietary nonsense like emotion engine and poor development tools for outside parties is gone. all of that was not to make great games but to force developers to make playstation games. they were trying to create a culture where they have playstation engineers and thankfully that will no longer be the case. this is why porting games to the pc or other systems like the xbox are easier now. it's a win win for the industry.

now we see the success sony has with the ps4 and you wonder to yourself why doesn't nintendo do the same thing? why is nintendo so stuck in the past unwilling to change even if it means alienating third parties?

PS3 really upped the game when it comes to great exclusives. I have like 60 games and 80% are exclusive games. As from the number of consoles sold it's clearly behind PS1 n PS2.

Being the "worst ever", might sound bad, but it does not necessarily mean the console was bad.

I will keep most of my thoughts on the PS3 to myself as to not inflame the majority of the fan base. But I would say that the split memory pool was a huge design failure, and that the Cell cause the same type of issue that M$ is now dealing with in getting developers to spend the time to work around the ES-RAM.

Yet it resulted in some masterpieces. It wasn't so bad that developer avoided it like the Wii U or sold so poorly due to price that it when under like the 3DO.

I mean...its bad for PlayStation standards, but that within itself oddly enough is sorta a compliment.

Consider all the great IPs that come from that console and how big of a turn around it was based on its launch, it still went on to sell really damn well, sure its not 110 or 160 million or anything, but for its price, how it released and who they where up against, they did a fantastic job.

MS came out with a low cost system, 3rd party games played better for them.

Nintendo came out with the Wii which was just a run away success. For Sony to even do that well considering how fierce the competition was that gen is a pretty big accomplishment.

$600 got you a state of the art console with HDMI and Blu-Ray while the 360 was lighting houses on fire. By the time MS fixed the RROD problem the PS3 had FAR FAR more games, and then the price hit $300 and the war was over.

My take away is that the whole of the console gen wasn't the best. That it was rushed into unprepared and with exaggerated expectations. Just looking at what was promised at the beginning with the likes of Killing Floor - whatever the shooter in the mall was called - and Eight Days to Vegas never happening while The Last Guardian is finally being a thing screams that.

Everything in life is subjective. However the PS3 had its Pro's and Cons, the pro's being fantastic exclusives, excellent graphics, free online play, BlueRay, introduction of free games. Cons were no online chat when not playing a game, bad 3rd party ports, horrible launch and the hack that compromised players personal accounts.

How is it so bad? The only type of bad console is the one that tries to change gaming in the wrong direction with gimmicks of both software and hardware.

- Bluray (something almost all consoles use now)
- HDMI (to play and watch high quality content that other consoles couldn't)
- Built in wifi (no need for a $70 accessory)
- Cheapest Bluray player at the time (closest in price after was $1200)
- Started at $499 (hmm...same as another console this gen, except it's underpowered to other consoles compared to the PS3's situation)
- Wireless controller
- Bluetooth (something every piece of technology has...except certain consoles for some reason)
- Top quality exclusives from start to finish that defined last gen. (They didn't give up on their fan base midway through)
- Ability to play with high quality and advanced sound systems.
- TLOU, Uncharted, Infamous, Killzone, Little Big Planet, MGS4, Beyond Two Souls, Motorstorm, Heavy Rain, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Journey and so many more top rated exclusives that weren't all focused on shooting everything you saw.

Now with all of that, and the fact that it's still selling better than two consoles available now in the same time frame...yeah no way it's even remotely bad.

There's no point in elaborating on the obvious. You are a Nintendo fan and as such have a certain expectation for the WiiU. I am a Sony fan and have a certain expectation for the PS4. You are never going to understand why the PS4 is selling and your post demonstrates that perfectly.

You say 'Bloodborne' and that's it. I say 'Bloodborne, MLBTS, Until Dawn, The Order, Grim Fandango, Tearaway, SOMA, Everyone's Gone to The Rapture, TLOUR, Flower, Journey, Unfinished Swan, GOWR, Rocket League, Volume, The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter, The Talos Principal, The Nathan Drake Collection and Dragon's Quest heroes.' There are a few other things such as the Bloodborne DLC but that list will do.

Those are the titles that have interested me but everyone is different and will probably have enjoyed other games on the PS4, including multiplats with exclusive content. Don't make the mistake of artificially reducing the list I've provided in order to prove your assertion right. Accept that your assertion is wrong and you won't struggle to understand why the PS4 is selling well.

Now, you can continue pretending those titles don't exist or pretend that the weight of diversity and games doesn't sell systems, or you can take it from one of 25 million PS4 owners that THIS is why Playstation is such a well loved and successful brand.

At launch MS had Forza 5, DeadRising 3 and RYSE, PS4 had Knack and Killzone, Sony was lacking at launch with its offerings. In 2015 MS had Titanfall, Kinect Sports, Fantasia Music Evolved, Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive, KillerInstinct Season 2, Halo MCC. Sony had Infamous, The Last of US, DriveClub and Little Big Planet. Again Sony was lacking. In 2015 MS had ScreamRide, State of Decay, RareReplay, Gears of War, Forza MotorSport 6, Halo Guardians, Rise of TombRaider. Sony in 2016 The Order 1886, MLB 15, Bloodbourne, God of War, Until Dawn, Tearaway, Uncharted. As you can see its not just Holidays its all around. Note I did not add digital Titles just retail. Note when I say digital I mean published by first party. Overall MS has produced more while Sony has been lacking. Next year Might be equal not sure. Hope this answers your question. Hope you re-think MS is not all about the holidays.

You are welcome to your opinion on the PS4 games. I have no opinion on XB1 games or WiiU games other than I like the look of some of them. We'll leave it at that. I'm sure there are plenty of XB1 game threads or XB1 related threads you can now visit. Unfortunately you won't find me in any of those though, I tend to stick to PS related news because I'm a Sony fan, although I do occasionally visit threads relating to all consoles, which of course is their purpose.

Interesting question that most will fail to comprehend because "PlayStation" and "worse" are in the same sentence. Because my 60gb can play games from all three generations, I can't rank it as worse. PlayStation one had to do something special to begin the cult following. We all know the legend of the PlayStation 2 as expressed through the variety of games and sales. PlayStation 4's start out the gate makes it hard to believe it would earn that title, especially once the games I like start rolling out.... So it's a 4 way tie for them all to be rated highly together. Now that PSP Go.

It changed the industry. Dethroned Nintendo and basically started the destruction of SEGA. It gave us Gran Turismo, Tekken, Final F...basically, it led the transition from 2D sprites to polys.

- 4 USB Ports on the 60 and 80 gig models
- Backwards Compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games
- Web Browser
- Bluetooth connectivity to allow you to use any kind of Bluetooth headset that you wanted to.
- Standard 2.5" HDD for an easy and relatively cheap upgrade
- Video Chat
- Playstation Home
- Free Online play

Also a feature that never gets mentioned is that ps3 did not have any region coding on games, which was great for me as I was able to import games without having to worry.
Furthermore I have a friend that has dexterity issues and thus finds games to be hard even on the easy setting, so some ps3 games like dead rising 2 and mgs4 if I remember correctly allowed you to use other people's saves. So he was level 50 in dead rising 2 and unlocked infinite ammo in mgs4 and was able to enjoy those games rather than watch me play

PS2 was on a league of it's own and sent SEGA to retirement. PS1 re-shaped the industry. PS3 was mostly hype followed by disappointment. KZ got people fired. Yes, some great 1st party, but nothing industry shattering. Wii won and, frankly, I give the edge to 360 over PS3.

For me it was the fact I never grew up with the PSone or PS2 although did play them a lot with friends and cousins who owned them (Crash Team Racing all day). I grew up with Genesis, Dreamcast, and the OG Xbox.

The PS3 got my attention with Uncharted 2 but never had the money to buy one and all my friends were still on 360. TLOU is what convinced me to go out and buy one and it introduced me to some of my favorite games ever like TLOU, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Flower, Resistance FOM, and still more I have backlogged like Beyond Two Souls and the God of War saga.

The ps3 is pretty much sony's phoenix. Rough start, yet rose to a pretty even par with its most direct competitor by the end and arguably had a better/more diverse game library. All things considered I'd call it one if their greater success stories.

Would pick my PS3 over those consoles any day. Don't get me wrong PS1 was amazing growing up and gave me a lot of great memories, but in the long run I would say PS3 is better. Also PS4 just doesn't have enough games now, notice how it's still an infant compared to the former consoles mentioned. Regardless I love me some PS.

Agreed, I have a fat ps3 so it plays those ps1 and ps2 games and I was finally able to finish all the old resident evil games and truly start to appreciate them

Why are people listing the PS4? This generation isn't even over yet. It wouldn't be fair to put the PS4 on the list.

I don't know which PlayStation console is the worst but I do know that the PS2 is the best PlayStation console hands down.

Ps2 graphics looked disgusting and dry as hell.I remember moving from Dreamcast beautifully textured games to playing Ps2 to dry textured horribly aliasing in its games.Ps2 was only considered good because it had the support of many companies backing it and oh yeah DVD player as well

I had a mid-range PC at the time, and I remember being absolutely floored the first time I played FFX, simply because of how great the dirt textures looked in Besaid.
