Until Dawn is Scarier Than Any Horror Film Ever Made

You've heard it before - eight unnaturally attractive teens go to a creepy cabin in the mountains and one-by-one they are picked off by a masked murderer. But unlike the clichéd horror trope, Until Dawn is a game that plays with the conventions of traditional slasher films, turning it on its head to great effect. It's also a hell of a lot scarier than any film coming out.

Thought they were going to bust a cabin in the woods on us. Would be cool if one player had to deal with killer clowns and another one deadly zombies. They have to explore more slasher type games with this genre. So immersive !

SaveFerris3162d ago

It will be interesting to see what Sony and Supermassive Games decide to do next with this, but I hope they can be even more creative with the game mechanics.

FullmetalRoyale3162d ago

Oh yeah. This as a franchise(perhaps not always in that specific sub-genre) is VERY exciting to me, though I have yet to play Until Dawn. I am going to play it on Halloween, as games such as this(though I suppose there really isn't a game like this) I like to play every year at that time.
But yeah, I think it has the potential to be a great franchise, if treated with care and respect.

NukaCola3162d ago (Edited 3162d ago )

I really want a new Evil Dead game after Walking Dead and Until Dawn. Regeneration was awesome.. Thankfully Ash vs Evil Dead series starts soon :)

Maybe the next game from them can touch more earlier horrific seens that feel more Rob Zombie or 70s horror.

Lightning Mr Bubbles3161d ago (Edited 3161d ago )

I have this game and it's pretty cool.

At first I was just figuring out who was who and I kind of wanted to kill all of them but now I actually like all the characters that are still alive and I hope I can save them all.

Problem is it took me till I was like 70% done with the game for that to happen, I'm not done with it yet but it seems the game will be on the short side, too short to justify $59.99 in my opinion.

But still, I like it and I hope they make a DLC and a sequel, they can really build on this concept, I think they got something going here. This could start like a new genre, like the movie/game genre. But it's not perfect, they could still build on it and work some things out. I like the timing for the action scenes, but the build up of the story could be longer and have more moral choices without any time limit so you have time to think about it and actually make a moral decision.(the game has some of this, but it could of used a lot more to add deph to the characters and story) And Nudity would be great, they have nudity in other games, it's should be like a rated R movie, that's what these kind of flicks are all about.

kenwonobi3162d ago

I think a proper throwback horror genre can be created because of Until Dawn. Maybe something along the lines you say zombies, werewolves, mask we sing psychos. Throw that into these types of games add a few more game mechanics. This could be awesome. Especially in VR scenario for Morpheus.

Thatguy-3103162d ago

Dude imagine how things will play out. When making choices you can simply tilt your head to what you want to do. When VR comes next yr things are going to get interesting

itBourne3162d ago

This picture reminded me I need to re-watch Heroes before the new mini series lol

PaleMoonDeath3161d ago

I didn't expect it to expand the way it did, the trailers were done perfectly, giving pretty much nothing away surprisingly.

Only made it with three survivors by the end, seems being super careful can't hack pure chance.

Aloy-Boyfriend3162d ago

Are you referring to those teeny wannabe horror movies like Ouiya or the true horror movies? I have yet to play the game. I say if this game is scarier than 13 Ghost, then I'll be impressed. That movie still holds up today

JoeReno3162d ago

Are you talking about the 60s horror classic or the 2001 Shannon Elizabeth movie?

TricksterArrow3162d ago

That Shannon Elizabeth movie is trash. I hope its obviously the original.

JoeReno3162d ago

One would hope @trickster but you never know sometimes people have funny taste.

johndoe112113162d ago (Edited 3162d ago )

I agree with the title of the article but there is a reason for that. It's because you are part of the game and not just an observer. It does an excellent job of that. I see this game being a GOTY contender, it's that good.

bOObies3162d ago

Great game. If you have not played it, you should. It will win awards at the end of the year

parentsbasement3162d ago

How can anyone disagree with bOObies ?

DeadlyOreo3162d ago

Jalva loves expressing his hate for this game. We get it dude.

Jalva3162d ago

I don't hate it, I will probably even get it at some point, but to say it's scarier than any horror film ever made is just simply retarded, it's a teen slasher drama, those are never scary, they're more about gore and comedic deaths with cheap jump scares to keep you entertained.

DLConspiracy3161d ago

I own, love and won't sell the game ever. Regardless of his reasons He's right. You can't say scarier than ANY film ever made. That's quite the stretch. That doesn't mean the game is bad AT ALL.

Gazondaily3161d ago

Oh so this game is scarier than any horror film ever made??

Lmao.../facepalm

Jalva3161d ago (Edited 3161d ago )

@DLConspiracy

Thank god someone here has a brain, not to mention the fact that in order to make such a claim you would have to have watched every horror film ever made, I have nothing against Until Dawn, the game is really well made, the problem is when fanboys start spewing sensational garbage and try to make a mountain out of a molehill.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3161d ago
johndoe112113161d ago

It's not a teen slasher drama, but then again if you played the damn game you would have known.

Jalva3161d ago (Edited 3161d ago )

Because unless you play a game you can't possibly know anything about it, you're just meant to buy every game blindly and hope that it's good, there's no such thing as demos, previews, reviews or let's plays... it IS a teen slasher drama and if you say it's not then that means the developers have failed their goal because that's exactly what they were going for according to themselves...

WitWolfy3162d ago (Edited 3162d ago )

Thats debatable... Dont get me wrong the game is fantastic... But most of the game is a cliche seeing it was inspired from teen horrors/thrillers through out the centuries. And I love the devs for that!

Doesn't look any different to the ps4 version. Hope it's not another lazy Sony remaster a.k.a remake.

Andy_Dee64d ago (Edited 64d ago )

Wrong, they even showed it on the last State of Play and I just played it the month before since I wanted to go back to it.

It does look better and more cleaned up, it's not a remake at least what they said. They said remaster so this article is wrong from the info I've heard.

Until Dawn is getting remastered to coincide with the live-action movie.

So not a Lazy remake and yes it looks better! :)

CrimsonWing6964d ago

It’s pretty different looking.

Neonridr64d ago

I'm sure it's a fair upgrade seeing as it's UE5 now. That being said, the original was not ugly by any stretch and I can't fully understand the need to remake this other than a cash grab to coincide with the movie that is coming eventually.

Crows9064d ago

Please point to me to a lazy remake?

Hedstrom64d ago

A good game, had some fps troubles on ps4. So hopefully thats ironed out with some better looking graphics.

solideagle64d ago

I think Sony should rename PlayStation to RemakeStation. I am a Playstation fan but this is getting ridiculous. I think this is the weakest gen software-wise compared to all other gen.

PS2 > PS3 > PS1 > PS4 > PS5

Battlestar2364d ago

Agreed. Sony has released only remasters/remakes of games and noting new. MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all.

solideagle64d ago

I have never owned or cared about Xbox, so I don't have any opinion about that. if you say that MS has released then I believe you I guess

Terry_B64d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2 , Horizon Forbidden West to name a couple.

And what Microsoft released in the last couple of years was way beyond the league of those listed games.

MrNinosan64d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West to mention a few of the good ones.
Then everything on PSVR2.
Then we have the bad ones, like Destruction AllStars and medium ones like Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

On top of that, there are lots of third party games.

Compare that to MS.
Redfall, MS Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, Forza Motorsport, Starfield, HiFi Rush. Did I miss anything?

Now lets compare the games, and see which console had the best start this generation.

solideagle64d ago

I think Sony should have abandoned the PS4. we have not seen true PS5 potential yet. where are those games that would load Assets from SSD where the character is looking <-- Mark Cerny

I hope all new games from Sony Studios are PS5 only from now...

CrimsonWing6964d ago

What’s worse is this gen is almost over, if you can believe it.

staticall64d ago

@solideagle
I completely agree with you. At first it was like «Hey, so cool, i've never played this game and it's getting a remake, means it'll be much better!» but now it's «Come on, i was just playing that, it still looks and plays just fine». I want to play new games, try new experiences, hear new stories from new characters. It's like gaming companies have hired George Lucas as a consultant or something.

@Battlestar23
> MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all
Suuuuuuuure, dude. Come on, be real.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro64d ago

Looks like the PS4 version. Lol, that'd be 70 bucks.

Machina64d ago

Cheap and quick way to fill in the release calendar in-between major new games - that's why pretty much all the major publishers have been doing it.

This is a fun game. But remaking this is lazy. A cheap remaster while a new game is being developed would have had more value for the customer.

EvertonFC79d ago

Yeah I here ya, I'm on the fence tbh as I think the haptics could be really cool but it seems a little early.
I guess it's to tie in with the movie release so makes sense somewhat.

outsider162479d ago

This over Killzone remake? Or Socom 2 remake?

monkey60279d ago

Less effort and there's a movie release to tie into.
I am very tired of all these remakes and remasters of games from recent years. If they're going to remake anything it should be a lot older.

Chevalier79d ago

If the Resistance trilogy on PS3 was being remade I would buy that day 1. Really hope the franchise returns along with Killzone

JEECE79d ago

Socom 2 remake wouldn't be worth the effort. I don't know the exact number it finally sold, but from looking at articles from a few years after launch, it looks to have gotten in the ballpark of 3 million. It has been twenty years now so many of those people probably don't even play games anymore, and the people who play multiplayer games now would start whining about Socom about three weeks after launch about how "there isn't enough content" and "they just sent it out to die." Granted, it would probably develop a small but dedicated player base from the old crowd who want a stable, solid multiplayer game instead of a live service, but that isn't a lucrative proposition for Sony.

EvertonFC79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

It was the same when millions of gamers asked for a sly remake then when the game came out it sold like 10,000 copies.
Sometimes we think we want the old games then in reality nobody ever buys it 😂🤣

outsider162479d ago

You have a point though. I guess we want it because of nostalgia. Was hoping we'd get a socom with a good single player and ofcourse multiplayer, maybe it'll sell well.
