From the Nintendo side we need so many characters before you even think of shovel knight.

I beg to differ, he is iconic. He has been featured on all three console platforms. The game is a huge success and it has gotten wide praise from almost every indie developer.

He's basically the mascot of the indie game community making him a perfect fit for the Smash roster.
