Devil's Third Review | Gamespot

Gamespot:
Devil's Third opens boldly with your hero--a Russian Vin Diesel lookalike called Ivan who is permanently topless and covered in Japanese tattoos--playing a drum solo in his cell in Guantanamo Bay while a riot ensues throughout the rest of the camp. Why has he been locked up in Gitmo? "TERRORISM", says his on-screen bio.

Despite this, he's apparently good friends with some guy in charge of the facility who sets him free to quell the riot. He does this by murdering everyone in sight with his fists, or a pipe, while occasionally getting attacked by swarms of vampire bats

Tomonobu Itagaki lost his touch.

Though I think a lot of us could've seen this coming when this....

One of the negatives is: "Free-to-play elements in a full-price game"

It would be beautiful if they had an ounce of coherence and evaluated this on other titles as well. MGS5, just for one obvious example.

Soulscare3164d ago

Completely agree. But you'll get downvoted to hell because you mentioned MGS5 on N4G without following it with "is perfect in every single way". Idgaf dude, what you said is 100% correct, I'll ride this downvote train to hell with you.

Locknuts3164d ago

I'd agree with ya bud...but what would people think of me if I didn't think MGSV was flawless......

zeuanimals3164d ago (Edited 3164d ago )

@Both Palitera and Soulscare:

And this is the problem with everything. People overreact before there's actual evidence of anything to be really mad about. All we have is speculation and you've blown it out of proportion.

The fact that you have to wait forces you to want to build and manage your base to be more efficient which is pretty much the point of the game. You see it as being designed around forcing people to pay by putting timers. Well, from everything we've heard, the timers aren't long and we know that better researchers will allow for faster R&D which will make them even shorter.

The fact that some schmuck doesn't want to wait an hour, capture better soldiers out in the field, or be a better player overall which will yield higher heroism and a better chance to have soldiers willingly join Diamond Dogs rather than needing to be captured first, will have no bearing on the fact that I'm going to do all of those things to get things back at base done faster. It's going to be significantly more rewarding for me since I'm doing what Big Boss should be doing to become the legendary commander of his army.

I also don't want things to be done instantly in games, especially when nothing else that's significant happens instantly. It's just a huge disconnect for me. I'm not going to get to where I am in MGSV by snapping my fingers and having things be done instantly, I have to take my time and actually do things. The only way the timers will piss me off is if they take an absurd amount of time even with a good R&D team.

Palitera3163d ago (Edited 3163d ago )

Soulscare and locknuts, you don't think MGS and everything Sony related is perfect? You don't think Capcom and Microsoft are illuminatis?
I'll downvote the hell out of you! heuheuh /kd

zeunimals, design and business 101: everything is connected. I'm not blowing anything out of proportion. It is a fact that the game has progression microtransactions. This alone means that the progression flow is impacted by this business decision.

FFS, in the comparison, it is Konami we are talking about, masters of designing casino manipulations, dealing now with a mechanic used to mentally direct players towards throwing more money on the game... And you still say that, nah, maybe they just put microtransactions on the game without any impact on its design and simply to help players?

Seriously. Read ANYTHING about designing a game with microtransactions if you still think it doesn't impact the progression of the game for everyone.

And this is valid also for anyone who doesn't get that the simple fact that progression MTs are implemented in the game already means that the progression is slowed below the most enjoyable curve. How much? In this case, probably a Konami-lot, but surely at least enough to annoy players and drive them to MTs.

zeuanimals3163d ago

@Palitera:

So why didn't Peace Walker, which had similar timers for R&D, also have microtransactions? Sure, they're present in TPP but we have no clue on what they're going to do to the experience. Anything we can say is just conjecture, including anything I say. Never rush to conclusions especially when we've gotten word that it's not bad.

And yes, business 101, if you can make money off of something, why wouldn't you? Doesn't change the fact that I'd still much prefer to have the wait timers than not, it takes me out of the experience if they can research and develop something in an instant while everything else in the game takes time. If the timers are designed around the microtransactions, meaning we have to wait incredibly long times or pony up cash, then that's a problem, but again, from what we've heard, that's not the case. If there's a day 1 patch that changes it up and forces us to wait longer, then we have cause for outrage, but before? I feel people on the internet should have learned by now that early outrage is not a good thing.

Yeah poor us, not like we have Super Mario maker, Project Zero 5, Starfox Zero or xenoblade X to look forward to huh?...

Erik73573164d ago (Edited 3164d ago )

^
The funny part is that list that is so post to argue against magicite but it is still pretty damn pathetic and small lol

I tottaly wanted a 16-bit mario maker rather than something like a full mario game like Galaxy or Sunshine, I'm sure mario maker will be a master piece! /s

Really 5 games? What's even worse is your picking games that aren't even going to be that good like Starfox Zero or Mario maker

DarXyde3164d ago

Xenoblade Chronicles X. It's kind of a huge deal.

That aside, it's pretty upsetting to see Itagaki make a bad game, especially when it's been in development limbo for so long. Doesn't look like Valhalla will have the funding to make big scale games. I'm not the biggest fan of the guy, but he definitely is/was a solid developer. Here's hoping he's not a one trick pony.

crusf3165d ago

You people begged Nintendo for this game to be released. Now look what happened.

LightofDarkness3165d ago

I'm glad they did, too. People need to understand that not everything that's withheld from release is due to some corporate goon underestimating our demand for quirky cult titles. Sometimes, especially in the case of Nintendo who exhibit far higher quality standards for their own published games than any other, they genuinely don't want to put their stamp of approval on something that's a waste of time.

Be careful what you wish for, in other words.

slate913165d ago

Were nintendo not about to release this game if not for fans complaining? I dont know anything about this whole games release.

ThunderPulse3164d ago

Sinon I see what happened. Now go play some more GGO.

garrettbobbyferguson3164d ago

"Released"

It wasn't a release issue. It was a publishing issue. People thought no one was going to publish it in North America.

ZaWarudo3164d ago

Nintendo: You see what you made me do? YOU SEE WHAT YOU MADE ME DO?!?!?

Fans: I'm sorry, Nintendo, i'm so sorry!

Nintendo: LOOK AT IT! LOOK AT WHAT YOU ASKED FOR!

Fans: No, please! No more!

Timesplitter143165d ago (Edited 3165d ago )

not surprised

Devil's 3rd seems to be one of those games that doesn't really have any specific game mechanics and simply relies on being "you're a guy that fights people"

ChickeyCantor3165d ago

" that doesn't really have any specific game mechanics and simply relies on being "you're a guy that fights people" "

what?

Define game mechanic please.

Timesplitter143165d ago

imagine if MGS didn't have any stealth component, or codec mission support, or items you can use strategically, and you'd just be following a corridor and shooting at people from start to finish.

Games need more than just "you fire guns at things". Especially when they're single-player

WeAreLegion3165d ago

They only need more if the action sucks. Just Cause 2 is a shining example of that. Or Vanquish. These are not good stories. But man are they fun.

ChickeyCantor3164d ago (Edited 3164d ago )

You're confusing depth with what mechanics actually are.

All mechanics in this game are built around fast paced action. So that's the shooting and the close combat mechanic ( combo system included ). It's just poorly executed i guess. There just isn't much depth to them.

TwoForce3165d ago

Ok. That's not good at all.

Talk about a kick in the nutter butters

naruga2668d ago (Edited 2668d ago )

this game creator payed his idiocy to change the development for exclusive release on a dying hopeless console with the best way ....the game was generally good i liked it and was the closest thing to a hardcore Ninja Gaiden we could get on new consoles ....but literaly its creator was idiot as f..k to undermine his game (it was obviously downgraded for Wii u) and release it exclusively on a underpowered system for some cash, destroyed his name in a moment

rjason122667d ago (Edited 2667d ago )

Oh boo hoo. Someone didn't get a game to come to their system.

@Edmix
Believe me I know the feeling haha, just pushing out a similar statement many others make, just cause.

ShaunCameron2667d ago (Edited 2667d ago )

@ rjason

Apparently.

@ XisThatKid

How did they ask for it? You know the company responsible for the engine used to make the OG game went under forcing Itagaki to scrap it and start over, right? Not to mention THQ, its original publisher, eventually withdrawing support before going under. As for it becoming a Wii U exclusive, Nintendo was the one willing to help Itagaki with the funding to finish making the game.

_-EDMIX-_2667d ago

This is easily one of the stupidest investments I've ever seen any company ever make for an exclusive by a third party. I'm surprised you think the game is any good at all because I don't really believe the Wii U made this game bad, believe it was going to be bad regardless of where it was. The Wii U has a handful of really great games please do not blame the hardware for how crappy this game actually is. To my understanding when you create a game for a specific piece of Hardware your job is to adapt. So do not blame the hardware for why this game was horrible blame the developer for even downgrading the game in the first place as opposed to adapting to their situation. If you have to downgrade a game so significantly that it begins to affect the design and quality you're probably not supposed to be downgrading it in the first place to such a platform. I don't blame the platform in this respect I blame the developer because they chose to continue despite knowing the hardware differences. The regular Wii U exclusives don't have that problem because they were made to actually work on that platform...

@rjason- could be because it sounds to me like he basically likes the game but he's angry at the decision of it being exclusive somewhere else

XisThatKid2667d ago (Edited 2667d ago )

I have not felt so selfish about a game before. I like many waited and waited patiently since this games release and out of no where Wii U exclusive. At the time i didn't have a Wii u and honestly i wanted it for ps3 but that never happened nor for 4. Anyway i honestly am glad this happened. Save for the innocent dev and people involved But i never wanted a game to fail so badly. Not to mention when i finally played it i think it sucks imho. I'm fine with exclusives but when a game's announced for your console or platform of choice then retracted they're asking for it.

bouzebbal2667d ago

Ikr it looked interesting in the beginning before it became an nintendo exclusive. Don't know what happened when it became an exclusive.

_-EDMIX-_2667d ago

Who knows , it was probably always going to be bad.

Ravenor2667d ago

A lot happens when a game gets developed. A proof of concept demo or pre rendered video being received well doesn't necessarily equate to a game game being good.

they done it with the wii and they killed the ds off for no reason.

ShaunCameron2667d ago

Um. You can still get the main D3rd game, albeit digitally. The only thing they killed here was the online multiplayer.

Wait why are peopole acting like they care now? You didn't when it was released.

gangsta_red2667d ago

Yea, I haven't heard a peep or a whisper of this game since its debut.

gamer78042667d ago

its the principle of it, i don't like seeing any games shut down so quickly

Chaos_Order2667d ago

I don't think Itagaki is crazy for making a Wii U exclusive.

I think he's crazy for pushing out a half baked, flawed as all hell, generic gore fest on the Wii U without making use of any of the console's specific features, and throwing his toys out of the pram when people criticise it.

The ups, downs and future of Tomonobu Itagaki's Devil's Third

Tomonobu Itagaki, outspoken former leader of Tecmo's Team Ninja and current leader of Valhalla Game Studios, has spent the last eight years of his life working on the action game Devil's Third.
