With Xbox's backward's compatibility out in full force for preview members, what steps can Sony take to compete?
The console maker’s first mobile game studio acquisition says it is making “action games with epic stories”.
KeenGamer: "The concept of the videogame mascot is dying out. Learn how abandoning the need for a mascot can lead to better and more diverse console exclusives. PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo all have differing strategies, for better or worse."
Depends on the character and how relevant they are or were, was the game they were in a good game that left an impression on you as a kid. If the character is over saturated and has shitty games like Sonic has had then people are tired of that character until they are rethought out and reworked from the ground up. You need a mascot for a brand when people see Link or Mario the first though that comes to mind is Nintendo, you see Kratos, Nathan Drake, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank you think Playstation. When you see yes Master Chief you think Xbox but when I see Marcus Fenix I see Xbox I am not a big Master Chief fan myself. You see Mega Man, Chun Li , Ryu you think Capcom. I have never played Blinx the Cat but his game from what I read sounds like it was poorly thought out and just slapped together to try and lure children into getting their parents to buy an Xbox. You need the character well thought out relatable and to have a fun game Super Lucky's Tale could have been an Xbox mascot as well but the game felt generic and bland. Mascots are needed to help push a brand whether they are old characters from older consoles or well planned out relatable characters that bring in a fun game to play. If mascots were truly dead then Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Ratchet and Clank, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot would not need games but they do. If I had a kid I wouldn't mind introducing them to Mario, Sonic, Spyro show them how fun these characters are. Then when they get older introduce them to Kratos, Nathan Drake, Marcus Fenix. Mascots will never die you need mascots whether its a video game or Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse they are brand recognition.
More like "The inability of Sony and MS to develop and support mascots."
Hell, as badly as they've managed games, Sega still has Sonic.
Sony has invested $250 million for a minority stake in Fortnite maker Epic Games, the companies announced today. With the new money, Epic Games has raised $1.83 billion to date. The companies said the deal cements an already close relationship between the two companies and reinforces the shared goal to advance the state of the art in technology, entertainment, and socially connected online services.
See that comment marked spam up above?
Censorship at its finest. Exclusively on N4G with superfast loading of down votes and flagging the truth. Echo chambers can't get any better than this.
Epic is laughing all the way to the bank with Sony's 💰. I don't want to say I told ya so...but...🙄
Man, Sony fans have to be in such a dillusioned state, I think they are going to need some hugs after this one.
@above
What are you talking about? This partnership is beneficial for both companies. The cash helps Epic, and in turn Sony will make profit on their investment. Nothing wrong there. Furthermore Epic and Sony informed each other regarding next gen, for years. Thats a big win for both there too, and theres nothing wrong with any of that. Unless you're an xbox fan boy of course.
As for your comment marked spam. Many people are using the system to silence opposition. Which bites. I didn't see it but I only mark actual spam as spam.
@dook... Epic is part owned by Tencent. If they need $$ they just get it from them. And MS also paid more than sony for the use of UE over the course of three console generations.
What MS did generations ago is immaterial. This isn't Unreal 3 its U5. As Janet said, what have you done for me lately.
Even if MS didn't, this investment doesn't give Sony any rights to control Epic or any of its properties.
It is a tired old franchise now. I'd be quite happy to never see another Gears game ever again.
It'd be for whatever Epic does. Sony has a stake in the company. They don't control the company though. They'll get dividends based on whatever Epic makes, which is usually a lot.
Sony isn't likely to want to change up whatever Epic is doing. Restricting Epic's marketplace just means it isn't making as much money, which means less of a return. Epic I guess wanted an infusion of cash, and Sony gave it to them.
People saying it's anything more don't understand what investment means, and are reading more into it than is really there.
any publisher that has fortnite really doesnt need any other game its a quality title and is free to play
*Invested* is not Paid
Sony still owns the money and they will get paid in huge back, they are making this bet anticipating the blowup with Unreal Engine 5.
I mean...isn't it even more clear now that we learned it was a major investment? It's one thing if it was maybe 6 figures to do some cross promotion, but we're talking 1/4 billion Paid here.
@Atom666
It isn't considered a Major investment. Article states they invested in a minority stake. You know what "minority" means right?
@stoney
250 million is a large investment, even if it's into a billion dollar company.
@TheRealTedCruz
Yeah its a large amount of money but its still a minority investment in the company like the article says...
250 Mil invested into a 17 Billion dollar company is definitely not a major or large investment.
@Yoshi
That made be chuckle. Isn't this investment larger than the check they wrote for all of Insomniac?
Name me the marketing deal that comes close to 250mil. That's the point. They invested a truckload of cash here, and it's mutually beneficial to promote UE5 on PS5.
There's no reason or way to spin it as "no big deal." It's a meaningful move for both, and explains a lot of things.
Someone should explain what Epic gains from this besides $250 million dollars, and if they really believe that Sony felt that $250 million was what it would cost to get Epic saying nice things about them.
To me, if Sony's investment was contingent on having Sweeney say the PS5 was a good console, and talk up the SSD and other features of the PS5, that seems kind of like him selling out. One thing I've never considered Sweeney to be is a sell out.
Sometimes, the simplest answer is the real one....not some made up conspiracy or extrapolating extenuating circumstances to try and find an answer that doesn't exist. Epic has nothing to gain by talking up the PS5 now. It would tarnish their reputation, which has generally always been fairly neutral. Even when MS was funding Gears of War for them, they didn't hold back the PS3 tools for Unreal, nor were they prone to talking crap about it.
It's only a 1.4% investment, that's a tiny sliver of the pie.
$250mil may seem huge to the average person but these are multibillion dollar companies.
This doesn't give Sony any decision making power over UE5 and it's not going to stop MS or anyone else from using this engine.
Y'all are truly weird. So the ps5 isn't actually any good, epic is just lying because Sony invested in them 2 months after the praise..... yeah ok
Exactly, it must mean that every other developer that’s praised the PS5 must secretly be working at or owned by Epic lol.
Invested yes... do you really think after Tim Sweeney and Sony Ceo would toast pinacoladas under the sun, Tim wouldn’t throw in a free hype marketing for ps5?! Of course he would.. not saying the ps5 is bad in anyway but he kinda went hard on that. Probably the most vocal Tim I have ever heard Tim ever!
it no use, the fanboys are in full droves in this thread, I guess what Tim said really cut them deep to conclude the guy is a shill. proof is in the pudding when the games come out
True. But it means what they DIDN'T SAY can be explained now.
UE5 will be utilized to great results on XSX and PC. We now know why they "chose" to really highlight only one platform.
Your efforts to defend Sony aren't necessary. There's nothing to defend...it's just business.
You’re correct, I think what they said is still true.
Problem was a lot of people were saying the *reason* they came out and said those things, made the exclusive tech demo etc was out of the goodness of their hearts, while others suggested that money looked like it had changed hands.
This shows the latter - doesn’t mean what they said isn’t true, just implies they were incentivised to come out and say it
So, Epic games promoted Sony, held off on talking about Xbox, all for the hope that Sony would invest $250 million in their company? Seems rather precarious to do such a thing unless the investment was contingent on that, and I can't imagine any $250 million dollar investment would rely on something so fickle.
Said good things, sure. But there are devs also saying good things about the new Xbox as well.
Epic is a giant name in the industry, and they chose to concentrate only on the PS5 - of which Sony invested a quarter of a billion dollars.
This is straight up marketing. Not a sincere developer simply commenting on a piece of tech.
Sweeney's comments were literally an ad for PS5, as far as I'm concerned.
Yeah....that the PS5 is a really good console.
Pretty simple explanation.
You think Epic couldn't raise 250 million from any number of sources? They're worth billions. Sweeney has never been one to pander to companies just to raise money, and has never had a problem praising or criticizing. He even criticized MS when MS was making them money with Gears of War.
Of course epic could raise 250 million some other way. And they do, all the time. The question is, if 250 mil really is such a small amount like some fools say, then what could Sony really be helping them with by giving it to them? The fact is, it's NOT a small amount of money.
Destiny 2 and Halo Infinite had/have a 500 million + dollar budget. That's huge. 250 Million was paid for the kind praise for PS5 and maybe as a financial Vote of Confidence and Support for Epic's advances in technology. But more than anything, it was to get an Exclusive promotion from the Stunning and clearly industry Leading tech giant of Game engines to say good things about the PS5.
You say Sweeny has never been one to sell out or pander? Are you freaking kidding me? He is the PC KING of sell out practices and has done all kinds of deals back and forth on both sides of the PC digital marketplace with
Epic Game store exclusivity and Epic does all kind of deals with Fortnite all the time.
Get over your delusions.
It's really not some huge deal Sony did this, it's just business. What is pathetic tho, most of all, is people like you deflecting the obvious because it makes you feel better about PS5.
PS5 didn't need to go this route to be successful and dominate tho. It's a good system supported by a Company with a big and broad vision for gaming. And we reap the benefits of that vision all the time. Is should make you worry so much either way you look at it. And you are clearly worried about something. You and many others on this site...
Worried Enough that some, (like you) create denials and excuses.. Over something that isn't even really that big of a deal in the first place.
It's kind of bad form, trying to Make it seem like it could only be done on a PS5, and to take money to act like the PS5 is what made it possible instead of Epic's engine, but oh well.
Life goes on.
If MS did this people would talk about how MS is the poison of the games industry probably. But no, it's just business and all 3 of the big 3 do things like this.
Dollars go to and fro with big tech companies all the time. If you ask me, The secret from now on should be transparency so people can decide which ethics and practices to support instead and marketing programs to support or buy into instead of making it seem like a promotion wasn't part of the boost in Positive comments and hype.
All that downplaying of the ps5 ssd architecture by exclusive ms developers has the same explanation.
Yeah they're really excited for PS5 and its architecture, it was self explanatory.
No saltiness here. Them turning a profit will only help Sony crank out some better games in the end. Good for the Sony consumer 👍🏽
Why? What they said is still true. Sony investing in them says a lot about their relationship and working together to move gaming forward.
No one is saying that it isn't true. What people are talking about is how weird/suspicious it was for a 3rd party company to go on a pr "crusade" for the PS5 when it would be in their interest to remain neutral and this gives context as to why.
lol, the damage control
We’ve been saying it for a while, Epic was in a marketing agreement with Sony on the PS5 and it’s even worse then we thought. They’ve been pushing the console owned by a minority share holder and playing it off like they were doing so
independently.
Xbox fans want to act like only Epic was praising the SSD. Guess they don’t have an answer for other third party devs praising it as well? What are they going to say next? Sony paid for them too? Haha
Everyone's takeaway is "oh, that's why Epic has been praising Sony and PS5 so much recently." Which, fair enough. But what I fail to see is how it's a bad thing for a platform to be intimately associated with one of the premier game engine studios. Putting aside all PR nonsense, it seems like a really good thing that will result in better Unreal optimization for Sony than they would have gotten otherwise.
On its own this deal is perfectly fine, but this does taint the praise Tim Sweeney gave PS5. I can't take his words on PS5 at face value any more now that we see there is money involved.
Yes, I'm sure this investment of about 1 and a half percent of what his company is worth, which will thus result in Sony making money off Epic, is totally what swayed Tim Sweeny.
I don't see how anyone can just say these are not related. $250 million dollars is a lot of money. It doesn't matter if Sony makes money off that or not. This was a transaction and I'm not going just dismiss the connection.
I said the same thing about the Dirt 5 devs, the Scorn devs, and Jason Ronald. All of them are paid by Microsoft. I don't see any difference.
The difference is fanboyism.
Nobody should have a reason to dismiss any sort of cronyism unless it somehow goes against a narrative they wish to see continue unchallenged.
Now that we know money was very much involved, it does give off a bad smell. I'm not insinuating that Epic's enthusiasm for the SSD, or their full-throated endorsement of PS5 and its SSD is in any way phony or fake.
I believe they're truly impressed by it from a technical standpoint.
But, you can't deny that all this money doesn't at least make you think "Well, that figures."
Couldn't you use the demo he showed where he was showing off what he was praising at face value? I mean, it's not like he didn't back that up, nor have other devs also say some of the same things he has said.
Sweeney's always been a straight shooter. He's criticized MS when they had a partnership with them, so why would he sell out to Sony to promote the PS5 only for what is a multi-plat game engine, where they'll make that much in a month or two off engine licensing fees. You think he'd marginalize that revenue stream for a one time investment from Sony, which they end up having to pay back divedends on, or may be required to pay it back at some point? Especially when they're worth enough money they could probably get that money from any number of investment firms. We're talking a company that makes a billion dollars a month.
I'd also like to add that fanboyism is the reason the Xbox guys care about this more than anyone else. They enjoy being able to say "See, we told you something was up" thereby giving themselves validation and discrediting Epic and Sony.
@rainslacker
"Couldn't you use the demo he showed where he was showing off what he was praising at face value? I mean, it's not like he didn't back that up, nor have other devs also say some of the same things he has said."
I have a heard time disassociating the choice of PS5 as the platform to showcase UE5 with the fact that Sony is a minor stakeholder in Epic. Look, it isn't like I'm saying these guys are doing anything wrong, but there was an enticement for everything Tim Sweeney said. In his heart, Sweeney could have meant every word he said about PS5 and it being a "masterpiece", but we can't see his heart and my heart tells me the praise was not entirely genuine due to the financial relationship of the two companies.
@SyntheticForm
"I'd also like to add that fanboyism is the reason the Xbox guys care about this more than anyone else. They enjoy being able to say "See, we told you something was up" thereby giving themselves validation and discrediting Epic and Sony."
I agree with your previous post and this as well. The gloating from the Xbox side is pretty thick. It is ironic, because some of the same people gloating here were taking the words of Jason Ronald, Dirt 5 devs, etc. as gospel truth and ignoring the financial relationships there entirely. So yes, being selective in pointing fingers at the exact same behavior is absolutely fanboyism.
I'm thinking the $$ epic makes off fortnite /rocket league mt strictly on ps alone is why we got the tech demo...not to mention they've been working together for yrs on ue5.
That tech demo is an early development Lara Croft killer...and Sony just bought it.
Nobody's saying it's a bad thing. People is just saying that now all the Pro-PS5 propaganda driven by EPIC has an explanation.
I do believe Sweeny and company should've been less blatant though.
To be fair, their pro-360 bent at the beginning of that gen was driven by money, but they backed up their talk.
That's the first thing I thought of too lol Paragon 2 ps5 let's gooooo
At least we're getting Fault and Predecessor which look promising.
The amount of cringe in the comment section made me make my own comment.
Investment means Sony will get back more than 250million back if Epic's stocks are gonna go up from this point on.
My assumption Sony is betting on UE5 and how it will affect gaming like UE4 did or even more.
Investment =/= Paid
I might get migraine from reading these comments.
You think bringing logic to this conversation is a good idea? Hell no. Let's pretend don't paid epic and other developers to say positive things. Yeah, that's a better idea.
a minority owner of your company is releasing a new console, and you’re not gonna plug for them?
🤣🤣
Of course you are, but you are implying that theyre sentiments were dishonest?
"you are implying that theyre sentiments were dishonest?"
Embellishment isn't necessarily dishonest, but the question is would Sweeney have lavished as much praise as he did were there no investment from Sony. Doubtful.
So do you think Unreal engine 5 will not be technically amazing when they release it? You know the engine Xbox fans have been saying will be on more Xbox games than PlayStation? The investment is because they know it’s going to be a great engine.
@razzerredux
Thing is, Sony worked closely with Epic during development both for the PS5 and UE5 and investment was made just now, way after he praised it, so this has nothing to do with it.
Imo he just genuinely impressed by it. When you love a game and are impressed, doesnt mean developer or publisher paid you to say that yk.
It is a possibility , but rather than being negative why not stay positive about it. Gaming community should be more about sharing the joy not take it away.
that's like hearing Elon Musk talk about rocket science and then say
"now that makes sense"
can you actually describe more.
Looks like Sony and Microsoft playing monopoly and acquiring as much as they can
I suppose you are right. But if you investment is large enough to be a decision making partner then it's not far from...
And there was some acquisitions too. I was talking about overall events in game industry
Sony doesn't have any controlling interest in Epic. Epic probably wanted to do something, and needed investment to do that, and Sony possibly felt it was worth doing. Epic wasn't hurting for money, but likely they could use some cash flow if they want to pursue something new. For all we know, this investment could be for a new game from Epic, which Tencent wasn't willing to fund, because Tencent only wants GaaS games from Epic....and Tencent has some control over Epic's cash flow.
It may or may not have influenced the promotion of the PS5 with the demo. But I doubt it influenced the positive talk that Sweeney made about the PS5. that's not really his style to take money for endorsement.
@gitiallyafficted so far that's just rumors about sony acquiring more studios
but why is that a bad thing? at least your phrasing looks like you meant it like that.
It's much better if Sony or MS acquire studios that otherwise would not make some ambitious projects that would require the budget they don't have.
I want to believe MS changed their view on controller the devs and will give them more freedom so we wont see any cancelled projects anymore.
Healthy competition is great and helps to improve. If there is one king, he will become greedy and selfish.
Gears of War was all they really had and they sold that to Microsoft, that could've made Sony some serious money but Microsoft likely heard it was about to get ported and offered Epic an insane amount of money they couldn't refuse in the end. But Sony spending 250 for only 1.4% is nothing, why bother?
Generally companies will invest in a wide range of stocks in order to be financially stable in case one stock tanks. So when you buy up 1 percent of a bunch of companies you're more stable unless the whole stock market crashes
Epic is worth a lot of money, but that doesn't necessarily mean they have a lot of money they can just go and spend....although I do believe they do have quite a bit of cash flow. Tencent actually owns a lot of Epic, and they have quite a bit of control over what Epic does. For instance, Tencent isn't interested in making SP games anymore, and only wants GaaS games, which is why MS brought the Gears of War franchise off them.
It could very well be that Epic wanted to make a new SP game, and that's what this money is for. A way for Epic to get some cash flow outside of Tencents control, that they can invest in a new game. Or, maybe Epic is investing R&D into some new technology they want to include in their engine, and Sony thought it was a good idea.
Epic could have realistically gone to any investment firm and gotten this kind of money fairly quickly. I don't think they needed to sell out to Sony to get it. Plus, they were working with Sony for a long time to build their engine for PS5, so it's quite likely that Sweeney is just that impressed with it. I mean, they even showed off what he was praising in their demo.
I think people are trying too hard to reach a conclusion here that is either partially or completely inaccurate. I find more inconsistencies with this being the impetus for the praise than logic that it is the reason things went down the way they did, although if this investment was looming, I can see why maybe they wouldn't be eager to promote the XSX at the same time.
Epic are not developers for a very long time. Fortnite was a unique move cause of BR blowout and that decision made them billions. Now they are focusing on pushing the industry with their EGS and UE5
And in 2015 MS bought Havok which is used industry wide. What's the big deal? It's not like Unreal 5 is going to be exclusive to Playstation. The stuff people argue over is amazing sometimes.
this Investment won't make anything exclusive to Sony
This is purely Sony's decision in believing that UE5 potentially will bring more than ever developers using it than UE4, Believing that EGS will only keep evolving and potentially become second Steam. Believing that Fortnite will survive a whole generation.
I like how these two studios are like bros, believing in each others success.
#positivevibes #loveandrespect
250mil for 1.5% make no sense I'm mean tencent have 40% ownership and have no say in epic games decision. What does Sony get out of this idk marketing rights I suppose.
Residuals, financial RoI, stands to potentially benefit their film and music divisions as well given how successful Fortnite's digital movie and music events have been...
Because when UE5 releases and is being used by every other dev especially by MS devs, Epic will be making bank and this Sony will most likely get a piece of the pie.
Epic does and WILL make bank. They have the best engine bar none. The PS5 Demo was proof on Nanite's technological advancements more than the PS5's in my opinion.
That is the only issue I feel with this, is that the goal was to make it seem like the PS5 is the only thing capable of doing so. Otherwise, it's business and all companies do things to make themselves look good or to create hype or make partnerships. That's not an issue. What is an issue is WHAT was being said, how it was being said, and the underlying reason behind it not being 100 legit truth. The PS5 is highly advanced and will be a great system. That is not up for debate.
The debate is HOW much the PS5's advancements set it apart from it's competition. When you find out money is basically being paid for what could otherwise be a BETTER statement about what their engine can really do for ALL systems/consoles/PC etc... you gotta ask yourself WHY would theu make the message about the PS5 only instead of getting EVERYONE in the loop with what the engine can do ACROSS THE BOARD? The only answer that makes sense is money.
And that is the Shady part. The PS5 is not what made nanite look so powerful. NANITE is.
250 million for marketing rights? That'd be unprecedented.
If I had to posit a theory, it would be that with Tencent having some hefty control over Epic, that Epic was needing some cash flow from an outside investor to follow something that they wanted to do.
With Epic, that would be one of a couple things(or a few, but two likely things).
1. Some technology for their game engine they wanted to develop, or purchase. This would make a lot of money in the long run if it pans out, and Sony paying $250 million to give them that cash flow....assuming Tencent wasn't on board or even as a partial investment in some new tech with Tencent....would potentially return a lot of money in some term of time. This would potentially make it a profitable investment, and companies are known to invest like this all the time.
2. $250 million sounds an awful lot like the planning budget for production, and the start up costs for a new studio. In this case, it would be more as an addition to their existing studio. It could be that Epic wanted to make another franchise, but it has already been stated that Tencent is not keen on any game that isn't a GaaS game. This leaves Epic making Fortnite, which they may want to not keep as it's sole game in their active portfolio. It could very well be that Sony is investing for Epic to pursue this new game, and if so, it would probably end up being what Gears was for MS....although MS got the publication rights to gears after the first went into production, and didn't have to front as much money.
As a 3rd option....Not all investments have to be big buys for control. Sometimes they're just ways to invest a sum of money in the hope of making a return. Nothing really dramatic about it, and Epic would probably take anyone's money if they offered up $250 million, and they needed it.
All this is independent on if that investment was made on the contingency that Epic promoted the PS5 exclusively with the demo. That's a different matter to what the investment was for.
It was clear to those of us who noticed how Epic kept coming out and lavishing PS5 only with praise...was like they had a deal in place...what do ya know haha.
for a company worth over a billion, I dont see how 250 million *investment* not payment can sway their promoting ps5 that much, after all no one on the outside knows what work they did together but as always you guys are claiming to have known all along lol, whatever gets people thru the day I guess.
Worth over $17 billion, according to the terms of the investment. $250 mil only gets Sony a 1.4% stake.
250 million is a lot of money.
It's definitely Enough for positive words to be said that are essentially FREE otherwise. Sony did something similar to make BluRay take off instead of HD DVD. People have different views and opinions on what they would and wouldn't do and if it is or isn't kinda misleading. I suppose that's just the way it is.
Oh please...stop it guys. WE CALLED IT! WE WERE RIGHT! The damage control is useless.
Im calling it right now...Sony and Epic will tie EGS to PS+ AND PS Now in the future. The writing is on the wall.
Luv
Please dont misunderstand the conversation. No one is saying the deal with Sony is bad...we are saying its why Epic has been showing Sony and PS5 so much love recently. No one is upset or even knocking the deal itself...thats just business and Sony has every right to do what they think benefits them the most as long as its legal. The problem came in when WE said that their must be a deal in place only to have PS fans downvote and say it wasnt the case...well it is.
In term of how I feel about more PS games coming to PC...
"Because it benefits me...thought that was apparent. If Sony releases more games to PC, that means I can play more of their games WITHOUT needing to buy more hardware. I get my Sony games fix on my PC. I want them to do that...why wouldn't I??? Only sounds logical to me. Hence, I said THANK YOU to Sony...bring more!"
No one said it was a bad thing. I personally think it would be a great thing! It means more PS games on PC, which is exactly what I said I wanted.
https://n4g.com/news/235665...
So, lets say a year from now, Epic reveals a new game that is exclusive to PS5. Funded with this money that Sony invested, because Tencent has enough control to keep Epic from using it's funds to do it's own thing. Will it still be as clear then?
I mean, am I allowed to make future assumptions like you did, which you are also now assuming you are proven right. If we're all going to make assumptions, then I can think of a lot of things that are contradictory to this being the deal to get Epic to praise Sony....a big one being that Sweeney and Epic directly showed in their demo what exactly he was praising.
I always say: Let's wait and see.
Always.
Let's just wait and see if the PS5 and Series X SSD's really do more than boost loading times. Let's see what really happens with that idea.
It will be great if those boosts come to fruition. But until we SEE and get REAL examples of exactly WHAT AND HOW AND WHY the SSD helped accomplish it, it's still kind of a wash.
I'd like to wait and see what happens.
As an XBOX fan who hoped for the POWAH of the cloud and found it was an IDEA and not a tried and true feature, I'm always hopefully optimistic. And some Sony guys say we xbox fans never learn from the past.... I've learned. And I'm here trying to make sure that delusions don't take you or others down the same road.
Many devs are excited about the possibilities that COULD be possible. Even Nanite to some extent, is an example of what COULD be possible.
Not necessarily what IS possible today, nor is it likely that most devs will be able to extract that level of fidelity using Nanite OR a PS5 or Series X, anytime soon, if at all.
But I'm gonna cautiously and optimistically wait and see.
So, to all the people claiming the only reason Eric was saying something positive about PS5 is because Sony invested in them, should be ok, saying the only reason any dev said something positive about MS is because MS invested in them or paid them.
Hahaha! Oh man this explains so so much! I mean Tim just won't stop fellating Sony and now we know why.
how does an investment constitute a bribe, are fanboys so desperate to disregard Tim sweeney coz of this just to make themselves sleep better at night? very sad...you can use this as your excuse to satisfy yourselves, doesn't mean what he said was wrong, other devss said the same thing and when the games are out y'all are gonna see it as clear as day.
Damn that was unexpected.
We can expect some PS5 exclusive content from now on.
Edit: well the UE5 demo kinda teased it
I doubt it lol. Not unless they buy majority of shares. Which will cost a few million lol.
Isn't Fortinite making Billions each year? What the point of a puny 0.25 Billion?? I know for us it's a lot of money, but for Epic it's literally a drop in the bucket. The best part would be to have cross-buy between PC and PS5 via the Epic Game Store.
Like Epic needs the $$ greedy fucks. Tim Sweeney net worth 4.5 billion yeah he really needs more $$. Fuck him.
Homie, do you not know what an Investment is?
Sony's going to be making some of that Epic money now. Permanently, or at least until they sell their stake. This isn't about Sweeny's money.
I guess any new PS5 exclusive game that uses UE5, will find it's way on PC via Epic Games Store. Oh well, more money for PlayStation, seems the narrative has been changed indeed and we may now have go say PS5 console exclusive more often than many would like.
Oh well, was bound to happen.
This is good news, I am excited to have epic on your side going into the next gen is not a small feat.
One could argue that epic would be bias, but invest and golden handshake are two different things. 250 million investment is nothing they got like 400 million from fortnight in april. Lets wait and see rather.
You can't compare Epic's own revenue with investments from other companies, the money isn't the same. One is money Epic earned, the other is money from another company. Even a small stake is enough to potentially make any comments about particular hardware a little suspicious.
I agree to a point, but my point was to show how little 250 million to are to Epic. I mean if I had that money 😂 i would also invest in them to get those dividends.
Well smart move since because fortnite lol. Why sony has invested so much into cod too. Like mcsft investing a ton in minecraft, the revenue will come in.
Anyone who has an ounce of business sense knows this is great movie/investment for Sony. Adding another revenue stream is always helpful.
This is a great move for Sony. The opportunity for Microsoft to make the same investment was there but for whatever reason they didn't bite (perhaps Tim Sweeny doesn't like Xbox).
I hope it leads to a timed exclusive of Fortnite 2 to PlayStation or making it so Xbox is forced to play higher licensing fees that'll make Xbox exclusives utilizing Unreal cost prohibitive. Either way I'm happy to see Sony being hyper aggressive and looking to muscle Xbox out of the industry with timed exclusive deals and buying stakes from the industry's most successful middleware producer.
This is by far the dumbest comment here... Why would anyone want less competition? I understand having a preferred brand and whatnot but to seriously want another company to fail because it's not the one you prefer is just idiotic. No company needs a monopoly in anything especially gaming.
Yep, I bet we are going to get a fortnight movie from sony now and it will make millions from all the little brat kids that will watch it.
Hah no secret deal huh Tim. Man that was phony. I usually don’t get offended by this trivial stuff but he straight up lied. They were so overt the top with their praise of the system it just screamed Deal. My thing is what the hell does Epic need that money for Fortnite prints money so much they’ve been able to do whatever they want. Why would they even need this deal. Epic has been very PS biased this gen. Paragon never made its way to Xbox before it flamed out. I’ll never understand why a 3rd party developer of that size would launch a potential platform on just one console. SF6 and Capcom I’m looking at you.
The biggest thing I don’t understand about Epic being so in bed with Sony this time around is that Sony barely uses Unreal. Almost all MS studios use it! Business is funny stuff. I guess this means more Sony first party’s will put it to use.
This is good news for Epic and Sony. Sony makes money and probably makes sure unreal engine is thoroughly invested in PS5. Clearly, Epic Will enjoy the money investment.
I can't imagine it being a very large stake. It does say minority stake, but with Fortnite alone cashing in over 300million at its peak (2018), this is probably a very small number.
i wonder, what does Sony get from investing in EPIC? i mean, this is ALL of Sony investing in EPIC, not just PlayStation, or even just SIE. maybe their Fate/Grand Order games will now change to UE...
Well now. That’s more than they paid for Insomniac, but less than what Fortnite made in April! Funny business, this is.
Well Insomniac didn’t have many IP’s they owned when they were bought. Most were already under Sony or Activision. Also this is Sony as a whole investing into Epic for more than games and not PlayStation themselves.
If it’s for future IPs I won’t complain but if they plan to just get a piece of the Fortnite pie then I’m definitely against it, especially if it stifles single player experiences in the future from Epic
I dont see why you guys are suprised. Don't you think its normal, just like other devs who praises MS but only work on MS exclusive game. The only difference here is other devs who praised xbox work only exclusively for MS and epic is a third party. Though i dont care about epic, and i think fortnite sucks and i also hate epic store, this is the only credible devs who knows what the hardwares capable off. You cant expect AAA third party dev to talk about consoles and whos better because they want to became neutral.
remember when it was just Epic wanting to side with Sony out of the kindness of their hearts?
Oh no!! I guess sony would have to increase their ps5 exclusive game deals to further prove their claims.
Nobody pays $250 MILLION for something insignificant. That is a significant investment. Something tells me that this will comeback to bite MS
That's a big partnership, this is a huge win for Sony! Glad to see Sony on the forefront of advancing the state of art and technology for video games this will no doubt mean we are going to see the best looking next gen games on Playstation.
The thing that most of you dont get it is that Sony is not paying for advertisement, they paid for epic to take advantage of all the tech the PS5 can offer and with that make the industry move forward... That is why they said that they had to rewrite some lines of code to accommodate the new tech and in the processes Epic talked about it and I can see that even Epic was blown away not because they were paid but because maybe it's legit... We want games and game engines to move forward for them to take advantage of it, Sony know that they first party will take advantage of the full system regardless of anything... but third party devs will take advantage because Sony made the engines evolve in some shape or form.
It's my take from this.
Here come the PS5 exclusive Unreal engine features. Smart move. Considering Microsoft was once very close with Epic...well...
"Of course, this is all free as long as you own the game of course and have a Gold subscription." wrong, it's free with or without Gold come it's release in November. Completely free and available off line once game has been downloaded once.
LOL this guys solution is for Sony to charge a lot less for psnow! I'm pretty sure if Sony could afford to charge less they would. Psnow is too pricey and always will be since it costs a lot of money to stream gameplay for hours on end.
Sony's best solution would be to try and emulate the ps3 2 and 1 like the x1 does. Though it's probably impossible due to cell's unique design.
Ridiculous article.
I've still got my PS3 and 360 so I'm not too worried about backwards compatability. It's a nice feature for the X1 though I wouldn't say Sony needs to compete with it.
sub for ps plus members or put game in ps4 that u own and then it scans psnow and boom we are in
Just make it cheaper, add 6 month and yearly price options with discounts and if you already own a game that is available on PS Now you can get free unlimited streaming.
I say to start they can either make PSNow free or incredibly cheap (like a dollar a month) for Ps+ members.
idk, also make PS1 and PS2 games compatible.
