There are still too many things that PS3 can do that PS4 can't

FRAKISTAN3168d ago

dont forget to give examples of the "too many things"

DualWielding3168d ago

Organizing files
Vita content Management
playing PSOne and 2 classics
Notifications for friends signing in

F0XHOUND3168d ago

Custom movie thumbnails.
Custom themes.

BitbyDeath3168d ago

Only early PS3 models could play PS2 games and that was because they had PS2 hardware inside them.

Organizing files wasn't done well at all on PS3, sure better than nothing but I would hope PS4 does it a whole lot better than just album sorting.

nitus103168d ago

While all PS3's can play PS1 games only the first release PS3's can play PS2 games.

It is possible for software to be developed for the PS4 to allow for PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility however it might be much more difficult to do the same PS3 games unless they were ported.

A-stil_Tv3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

Bluetooth headset support and for crying out loud add chrome as the web browser thats pretty much it for me ATM I'm sure there's more that I can't think of at the moment

P_Bomb3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

Just to add to the lists:

Full avatar access/purchases
Profile quotes
Sorting trophies alphabetically by game
Offline trophy viewing
Social hub like Home
Custom themes and wallpapers
Saving movies/pics/music to hard drive

Spartacus103168d ago

party text chat messages appearing on screen while you continue playing, and not requiring you to go into the party menu to view them.

kevnb3168d ago

What's sad is that hackers have revealed all ps3s can play PS2 games since every ps2 game can be converted to a ps2 classic.

nucky643168d ago

well, the big ones for me are Bluetooth support for mics and the little notification in the corner of screen when friends come on line.

frostypants3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

Support for the Sony Bluetooth remote.
Support for playing MP3s (this one is ridiculous)

I shouldn't be turning off my PS4 and firing up my PS3 when I want to do media stuff. But the PS3 remains, at this point, a far superior media platform. I know the PS4 was focused on gaming, but they could throw us a few bones...

Crazyglues3168d ago

@ Phoenixup

Do you mean can't, or just don't do yet...

Because I think PS4 can do anything PS3 did, it's just a matter of putting those features in.

Like Notifications for when your friends sign on, PS3 use to tell you as soon as they were on, but it's not an option on PS4. (but of course it can if they add it)

scientificreasoning3168d ago

Don't forget there are things the PS4 can do PS3 can't like share play, multitask, party Chat, Play go, and the ps3 OS is a slow mess. Two sides to every story bro.

BlackPanther3168d ago

That makes zero sense. You buy a new iteration of something having new features of course but you can't lose many you had before.

FallenAngel19843168d ago

Considering that PS4 is an upgrade to PS3, it should go without saying that it would have more features.

I don't see how you can damage control PS3 having features that PS4 has yet to adapt to yet.

GhostTurtle3168d ago

Bro, that like, makes no sense.

DragonKing813168d ago

Well it's still selling well regardless lol

News4Noobs-3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

And that is why we still don't have simple features like notifications for friends signing in... Because no matter what "PS4 still sells well" that's why Sony just sits back and relax and simply ignore for the features we really want more first. Yes, that's why competition is good because it makes companies have more pressure on them to try to give what customers ask/want. As long as they keep the lead... It is like "we will give you those features whenever we feel the push for it." and of course the consumer is the first to blame for... Because most of us will justify it as "yea, then why deh console iz sellin so wellz then?" that's not the point. The point is we should be getting what we have being asking for months, what we already had in the ps3, what the PS4 can handle so easy. A simple feature but yet so usefull? Like are you gonna tell me that it's gonna take them 3 years just to code "Player XXX just signed in?" c'mon

Sorry, but its been to damn long wait for things qe have been asking for since day one... Like it is not even something like we want the ps4 to make sandwiches, wash our clothes, and give us cold beers.

The real reason why YOU don't see the features you want is because your answer is "well it still sells, so Im still happy." lets be real and don't try to hide your needs with is already offered because if that was the case just because we have shared play does it means we don't need folders, friends notifications etc? Then what would be the point of even asking for those things then?

Lol mark my word. Don't be surprised if at the of this gen we still don't even have half of the features that should've been available at least 6 months after the console was released. /Writing from phone

Lets see the disagrees and see how many people don't want anythig else for the PS4 :)

Angeljuice3168d ago

@News4Noobs

I don't care at all for what you seem to think is necessary. Friend notifications for ecample would only effect me negatively (it used to annoy me on PS3).

Now I'm not saying there aren't improvements to be made to the ecosystem, just that they aren't a universal fit.

I'd rather have CD playback than anything else that has been mentioned here, but I wouldn't be presumptuous enough to have a go at people who don't agree with me.

I genuinely don't care about the features you have listed, so why should I be up in arms about their omission?

KnownAsEpic3168d ago

Well, because the PS3 only does everything

OverdosedWitDopeness3168d ago

Yup improve from last gen and not take away from it. I see it as just a matter of time for these features to be implemented tho considering the resources available.

Ch1d0r13168d ago

Well there are many things PS4 can do that PS3 can't. For example party chat.

frostypants3167d ago

Which is great. But some of the stuff it lost is nonsensical. Things that should be simple to include.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3168d ago

@PhoenixUp

PS3 can't shareplay, Doesn't have a photomode, Can't stream gameplay, downloads and installs games at a turtle's pace. There are a few more, but at this moment, I'd say I rather have the features that the PS4 has. The only feature I miss from the PS3 is support for MP3's.

Azmatik3167d ago

*tip* ps4 supports MP3s now.

frostypants3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

@Azmatik, only off USB. That's not full support.

PhoenixUp3167d ago

Comparing what PS4 can do that PS3 can is absurd, especially considering the former is an upgrade to the latter.

This is about PS3 still having functionalities that haven't been added to PS4, not a comparison game.

kingPoS3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

You have no idea how much I miss the PS3's video playback functionalities. I keep pressing square & triangle expecting 15 sec thumbnail slide or a host of options to show up. It's frustrating!

I'll admit though, MKV support is really nice, however it doesn't do anime fans any favors without embedded subtitles.

StormLegend3168d ago

Last Sign in plz!!!

I wanna know when the last time my friends was online..

DragonKnight3168d ago

Why? If they're offline then you can't play with them. The only reason to know when your friend was last online is to stalk them and/or make them feel bad that they played without you.

metalgod883168d ago

DragonKnight, not impressed with your lackluster comment. Its a common feature that we see in numerous systems, games, and auditing.

I too would like this feature added.

DragonKnight3168d ago

I don't really care what you're impressed by or not. Saying "I want this feature because it's a common feature" is not an answer.

Why do you want to know when the last time your friend played was? If he/she are not online, you can't play with them and that's the most important part.

So let's create a scenario shall we?

You boot up your console, you look at your friend list and you see...

"XxNOoBzKilLa420xX last sign in was 2 hours ago"

Exactly what has that information told you except that 2 hours ago your friend was gaming online without you?

Is knowing that going to make your game session better?

Is knowing that going to help you if you say play against him in the future?

What could you possibly do with that information other than to say to your friend "I saw you were online 2 hours ago" and go from there.

Personally speaking, if I was presented with that kind of comment from someone on my friend list, they wouldn't be on my friend list for much longer afterwards. I don't need people stalking my profile like some kind of jealous partner.

OverdosedWitDopeness3168d ago

@dragonknight It's good to have cuz some people on ps3 at least would stop using there PSN account or sell there ps3 so if it's say 4 months since that friend was online might as well delete them to free up space for more active friends otherwise its useless.

DragonKnight3168d ago

@Overdosed: Finally someone provides an actual answer that has merit. Thank you. Yes, I can definitely see having that feature as being helpful if you have a friend list full of inactive people, but then again basic sense should be able to suffice in that regard too.

Kombatologist3168d ago

It's about usability. Knowing the last time people signed into something gives you an idea of how often they use whatever it is they're signing in to, which helps with the occasional purging of your friends list, among other things.

And all the basic sense in the world isn't going to help you keep track of 100+ people.

DragonKnight3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

@Kombatologist: Yes it will. You're trying to tell me you cycle through playing with 100+ people on your PS4? Enough so that you wouldn't remember who you'd played with?

Kombatologist3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

@DragonKnight: No, it won't. Most people have better things to do than keep track of who's actually active on their friends list(s) (or troll forums for that matter). Of course I don't cycle through playing with 100+ people, but that's not the point. If someone on my list isn't active for a long time for whatever reason, there's a good chance I'll remove them if I don't really know them. There's no way of knowing how long someone has been inactive, though. That's where such a feature comes in handy. I'm not sure why you're against it in the first place. It's fine if you have no use for it, but others do.

freshslicepizza3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

dk,
"The only reason to know when your friend was last online is to stalk them and/or make them feel bad that they played without you."

think outside of your box. it can tell you two important details. one is when they are usually on (so that you can manage your play time together better) and two is if they even use online much. some may have sold their system or stop subscribing. i delete old friends who haven;t signed on for over a few months. why is it so difficult for you to see benefits just because you may not care?

"I don't really care what you're impressed by or not. Saying "I want this feature because it's a common feature" is not an answer."

of course you care, why else would you be here? the irony is your only response to think why anyone would want it would be to stalk them. strange way to perceive things.

your comments come across more as damage control than trying to be helpful. how sony still manages to not show your friends when they sign in on the ps4 is still a mystery to me but i imagine you think that's no big deal either.

voltron20103168d ago

seeing as how the number of people you can add to your friends list is limited on the ps3 I like to know that someone has not signed in for 8 months. then I can delete them . on the ps4 you really can't tell if someone you added still plays .

DragonKnight3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

@Kombatologist: You... you just proved my point. You pretty much just agreed that there really is no need to know when someone was last signed in to know that you haven't played with that person in a long time. Add a lack of communication with them and that equals you likely deleting them from your friend list. Just because you have 100+ people on your friend list doesn't mean you don't know who you play with on a regular basis.

@saltybread: You really have a reading comprehension problem. When I said "I don't care what impresses you or not" that had nothing to do with my interest in the general topic of this thread, it had to do with someone replying to my first comment. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you that you always, ALWAYS, have such a hard time with basic reading skills?

But anyway, the reason this is not really beneficial is because it depends on people being ignorant and/or lazy. What should be a mystery to you is how so many people don't know their own friend list and can't remember who they've played with, along with why is it necessary to have a feature on a console to facilitate your ability to schedule play sessions with friends when you can, shockingly I know, just ask them via a message.

"Hey XxNoObKiLla420xX you wanna play some COD tomorrow?"

"Oh, hey 360NOSCOPING4LIFE, yeah sure. When would you like to do that?"

Wow, that was so difficult to do wasn't it? I mean, logging on to your console, finding their name, seeing "last signed in 3 hours ago" is definitely more pertinent information than simply asking them.

I bet you're the kind of person who goes to a store, doesn't matter what kind, and will literally search the entire store top to bottom forever looking for something when you can just ask someone that works there where it is.

freshslicepizza3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

dk,
"But anyway, the reason this is not really beneficial is because it depends on people being ignorant and/or lazy."

i see. this probably applies to a lot of things in life. it's not really all to do with laziness, it's called efficiency. so making things easier isn't beneficial? gotcha.

"What should be a mystery to you is how so many people don't know their own friend list and can't remember who they've played with, along with why is it necessary to have a feature on a console to facilitate your ability to schedule play sessions with friends when you can, shockingly I know, just ask them via a message."

you don't seem to like playing with others online anyways so it's understandable you cannot get your mind wrapped under the idea that lots of us like to have lots of people we can easily connect with at any time of the day. just because we don't know as much about them as our close friends does not diminish the convenience factor.

"Hey XxNoObKiLla420xX you wanna play some COD tomorrow?"

"Oh, hey 360NOSCOPING4LIFE, yeah sure. When would you like to do that?"

"Wow, that was so difficult to do wasn't it? I mean, logging on to your console, finding their name, seeing "last signed in 3 hours ago" is definitely more pertinent information than simply asking them."

i don't even think you even know what it is your arguing about. you seem lost in the discussion and use poor analogies to make some silly point that really has no merits to the discussion. all because of why, to keep arguing?

"I bet you're the kind of person who goes to a store, doesn't matter what kind, and will literally search the entire store top to bottom forever looking for something when you can just ask someone that works there where it is."

yes, that's called being a man. we men tend to do that. same with asking for directions. that doesn't mean i don't use google maps. or is that silly too and only for lazy people?

we all know the type of personality you possess. you like to argue, not debate. you like to impose your opinion onto others and anyone who clashes with that you take aggressive actions and will attack if needed. doesn't sound like the person i'd want to have on my friends list. and we all know how good sony's matchmaking system is along with its ability to track those you block and report.

ask yourself, what is the downside in supporting this feature? there isn't one which is why you are on full damage control trying to diminish its relevancy of importance. why? i have no idea but it's amusing.

Kombatologist3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

"@Kombatologist: You... you just proved my point."

Um, I did nothing of the sort, because you have no point.

I want external drive support
since i have a 4k tv i want upscaler to 4k
I want to see psnow adapt to ps plus so maybe extra £10 a month gets u unlimited games through psnow i want EA excess better voicechat etc etc

nitus103168d ago

And I want my flying car now!

The PS3/PS4 and the XBox360/XB1 can only output to a maximum of 1080p (aspect ratio 16:9). If you have a 4k TV it will upscale although it won't look as good compared to true 4k content if you can find any and have a machine capable of playing it.

The PS4 and XB1 can actually play BD's which have 4k content however there are no true 4k console games although with some PC's with one or more very powerful graphics cards some games can be up-scaled to look like they are producing 4k content.

OverdosedWitDopeness3168d ago

@whitey
Your best bet is to get a home theater receiver with good 4k upscaling or a very good gaming pc

Whitey2k3168d ago

I did have a very good pc but got rid of it due to running costs for the bills and house mortgage so I got myself a ps4

Probably won't happen for PS+ since Sony makes a clear distinction between a PS4 game and a PS5 game, unlike PC and Xbox where it is not a specific device game (It's now always an Xbox game).

So to make the PS5 game of fallout 4 available. Bethesda would need to renegotiate the complete deal with Sony.
hence why there's often only the PS4 version of the game available on PS+.

Let's hope Bethesda and Sony can arrive to term quickly.
