In my opinion it's really not. At least not in comparison with controllers from Xbox or Gamecube, hell, even Wii U Pro controller is miles better. Yes, I held all of them, I currently own wii u and PS4, however I owned 360/XO and GC.

DS4 in my opinion:

Pros:
very good ergonomy
built in battery (?)
trackpad is actually useful in some games

Cons:
cheap materials (the rubber on sticks wearies fast, triggers are prone to breaking)
useless speaker

The DS4 is much, much improved over the DS3, but the Xbox controllers still feel much better in the hands. Not a fan of the touchpad/speaker/lightbar/tilt gimmicks though. Lightbar serves a purpose but should be able to be turned off for the people who don't own the camera. All this extra stuff just drains the battery and I have yet to see a game use them to any real advantage.

Back on subject - DS4 is great imo. The headphone jack, speaker and touch pad have been well thought out and work well.

I still prefer the internal rechargeable battery over AAs even though the battery life could have been improved. This isnt a big deal - buy another pad or a longer USB cable if funds are tight.

I cant says it the best pad ever because each to their own but it gets my vote.

It is more irritating to me than any teacher scratching her chalk across my blackboard. I always turn the off the vibrator option, unless it alerts you to the secret spot that her treasure is hidden at. Like some of the final FANTASY STYLE games did.

I own the wii u pro controller and in now way, shape or form is that controller better than the DS4. It feels extremely cheap and is super uncomfortable. DS4 feels way more premium than the others a part for the thumbs tick grips which you mention. I haven't had one problem with the grip but seems a lot of people did so I won't ignore that issue.

On topic I love the DS4, fantastic controller. The only downside is the battery duration. Also, I'm not sure the fixed it but the thumb sticks wore down a little fast on my launch controller.

Sure, and Aqua's Barbie Girls is one of the best selling singles ever, therefore one of the best song ever. Don't mix numbers and in that case best compatibility with being the best.

It's all about preference on that one, I know I haven't touch a XBOX pad since that fat awkward original XBOX controller but I haven't been deceived from a PS controller. I thought I would hate the DS4, but it's the biggest leap in improvement from a gen to another in the PS history, it's awesome.

The triggers are still squishy, the touchpad could be neat...but it's never really utilized, the speaker is gimmicky and a waste of battery life, the thumbsticks are better but wear too quickly and the Battery life is atrocious. ...however the best new aspect is the weight really, it has a better balanced weight.

For me it's X1>360>DS4 ..although from what I hear the X1 Elite controller may slide into #1 comfortably

Of the modern dual stick controllers it's certainly the best one, given that its only failure is the battery life (the 360 pad was great, however it had a really poor D-pad that takes it out of the running as ergonomics should be top notch for all buttons, not just 1 use scenario).

The XB1 controller is just awkward to hold in your hands, I can't quite put my finger on the exact problem (I have not touched one in months to be honest)... if it was my only controller I would learn to live with it, after all I was able to play with the Dreamcast controller back in the days.

I have not played with the Wii U Pro game pad, but I heard great things about it... could not tell...

IN My OWN OPINION, I agreed UnHoly_One, the XB1 controller is the best controller I've ever used with the X360 being a closed Second. That is until the Elite XB1 controller is release that is.

I like it a LOT. I think the xbone controller is also VERY good. Regardless of going into my personal preference, I'll just suffice in saying that I really enjoy playing with the Dualshock.

I have the black, blue and the RED!, with the red being my favorite color (even though I don't like when the lighbar is blue, it looks like a cop car lol), with the blue as my second favorite.

My gf actually ordered me the RED controller from Japan so I got to have it before it became available exclusively at Gamestop here. The box it came in was pretty nice, I have to say, I liked it a little better than the plastic one's we have here in the States. (although that might have been because the cardboard box was new to me).

Not my thing..absolutely not. It was good for the 3D Platformers for sure but I remember having red thumbs from playing Killer Instinct Gold. For fighting games it was crap and I bet it was maybe one of the factors why Capcom never released a fighting game for the N64. I might be a bit biased since I play mostly fighting games.

Well, the SNES controller certainly set the foundation for future controllers to come. Ironically enough, this foundation was followed by the competition, but Nintendo themselves actually neglected it completely for 2 generations in a row (N64 and Gamecube). For Wii, they more or less re-adopted it with the games compatible with the Classic Controller, and now they're back on track with the Wii U.

I'm mostly a playstation fan but I have to go with the 360 controller. Especially for shooters. But the ds4 is now my close second. I don't know why Microsoft messed with the controller on the Xbox one. I don't like the way it feels. Can't put my finger on the exact thing it is but I just know it doesn't feel and handle like the 360 controller to me.

I like the Xbox one controller better than the 360 though. It takes some getting used to just like with any generations new controller. But once you go back to the 360 you will feel just how much better the Xbox One controller is. Its lighter, the battery pack doesn't get in the way of your fingers it feels like its integrated.
The triggers are easier to reach. you can switch your finger from trigger to bumber faster.
And last but not least rumble triggers. These seemingly insignificant things will feel like a must have when switching to other controllers.

For me, it's the opposite, and these are the reasons:

1. The stupid convex triggers on PS3. I mean, really?

2. The sticky analog sticks. Ew. :(

3. The Dualshock 4 is a bit longer and its body feels more ergonomic, in my opinion. Although, yeah, I'm aware that this last point is just opinion, not fact.

Dualshock 3 had a much, much better battery life, though. The 4's battery is awful.

I have never had a problem with the analog sticks being sticky and I'm still using my original ds3 from my 60gb FAT PS3. If I had to explain it would be the height and placement of the analog sticks, it's just perfection. I played a lot of cod and bf3 and using ds3 for fps was just perfect.

I may be the only other person in the world who agrees with you. I learned on the PS1 and got really comfortable with it on PS2. So when the PS3 controller kept the same form factor (meaning I didn't need to re-learn the button layout) it was perfect. Add in the fact that the battery life on the DS3 is phenomenal (especially compared to the DS4) then you have the best controller ever.

I love the feel of the controller but I have broken 2 of mine since launch and I am not even an aggressive player.

360 was durable but had a crappy d-pad and aa batteries.

Kinda, I like the fact that it feels very familiar but has been made much more rounder. Touch pad also has some potential but the 3.5mm port is really cool feature IMO. I dont use headset often (barely ever) but now if I ever feel like just plugging one in, I can pick from any of my already existing ones.

I have one PC headset that I have practically never used for gaming (mostly music or some laptop/tablet movie viewing) but I have used it a couple of times with the PS4 when I played Metro Redux. Worked so nicely!

Two things that I want to be improved in the future pads/revisions is 1) battery life and 2) slightly longer (like, 2mm) thumbsticks for little more precise controls. The sticks are shortest out of any DS pads in the DS4.

In terms of pure ergonomics, I can at least say that it's the most comfortable Dualshock controller I've ever used, and that's saying something, because overall, all of them have been pretty good. But the Dualshock 4 improved on past iterations on almost everything.

There's still room for improvement, though. There always will be. For example:

- Battery life. The only real downside to the controller.

- The stupid light that stays on all the time. Why Sony refuses so adamantly to give us the option to turn it off baffles me. Surely it's as simple as a software update...?

- I don't know if the Xbox One's gamepad is more comfortable or not (I guess it comes down to personal preference as always), but I can say that I liked the rumble triggers a lot, so I hope Sony adopts this feature for the PS5. :P

- Lastly, and I KNOW I will get disagreed to hell for this, but... I actually LOVE the Wii U's gamepad, and I think that the second screen is full of potential (which was, for the most part, left untapped on the Wii U). However, if the next generation of consoles ALL had a small touch screen on their controller, I think we would see a lot of superb implementation on games. Something as simple as playing Grand Theft Auto and having the map on the small screen instead of pausing can make a hell of difference in the experience, believe it or not.

The feel and the design is perfect. Looks as good as it feels in your hands.. I HATED the PS3 controller though as it felt like a cheap toy, didn't like the feeling of the triggers and the sticks just felt too close together. They learned a lot from that mistake I think. Couldn't care less about the DS4's light bar BUT it does add a cool asthetic to the controller when you slap a custom light bar sticker over it..lol Overall, I really dig it a lot and coming from Xbox360 last gen, I had my reservations coming in..

It is debatable. For me yer it is the best controller I have used. Even replaced my 360 controller and got another DS4 for my PC.

It is just a good all rounder controller. Really good for shooters, fighting games, racing games ect. The 360 pad is my second favourite only reason DS4 gains a extra point over it because the d-pad is really poor on it. Making fighting games a bit of a challenge for me.

The XB1 controller is decent. But they took 1 step forward 2 steps back for me. They made the D-pad better but I really don't like the shape of it the 360 was perfect for my hands then they went and shrank the XB1 pad a tiny bit. Plus I don't like the RB and LB buttons.

For my PC games, I switch between the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U Pro controller. My friend lent me his Dualshock 4 Gamepad for me to try out for a week or so. I really liked it, but I heard some things about the control stick rubber wearing out, and I didn't really like the battery. Though I believe it was a big improvement over the Dualshock 3 controller atleast lol! I still like the Wii U Pro controller the best, and Xbox 360 controller second. Dualshock 3 controller is used from time to time.

I just got a PS4 and I'm not sold on the ergenomics. I've had every major system in every generation and I've always leaned towards the feel of MS's controllers. There's something...off about the DS4 tho. I think it mostly has to do with how my fingers wrap around the curved edge of the shoulders. I don't feel like I'm getting the support I do from the 360 contoller. Oh well, I'm married now and only plan on having one system this go around. So I better get used to it!

I love the DS4 it is miles better than the DS3, it is slightly better than the Wii U pad and almost as good as the 360 pad or maybe tied with it but I am sorry no controller has ever been done as good as the Xbox One controller.

Right off the bat the DS4 is eliminated from contention with poor battery life and the fact that the rubber on the sticks can easily wear out as well as triggers breaking. The shell and ergonomics of the DS4 is superb in comfort and quality but when the parts in the controller are cheap this happens.

The XB1 controller is very comfortable to hold (not quite as comfortable as the DS4 but the build quality of the XB1 controller is far superior and while you would never think it the rumble triggers are very cool when your in game. The Triggers are just better, period and once you get used to the shoulder buttons you dont even have to remove your finger off the trigger to press it you just sort of roll your index finger and thats a big bonus in shooters right off the bat.

Obviously the DS4 has the better D PAD not sure why MS doesnt know how to make a proper one of those.

The crazy thing is, the XB1 controller is about to be made even better when the Elite controller releases and then the DS4 will be an afterthought. No more needing SCUF controllers and being able to remap buttons, program 2 different layouts and swap on the fly, as well as trigger stops for shooters, and swappable dpad and analog sticks will make it the best controller for gaming, bar none.

Yes its expensive at $150 but considering what you get I had no problem justifying my pre order of it to myself.

Also Side note before I get a ton of disagrees or catch shit, all of this is purely based on my opinion none if this is intended to be presented as fact.

It's all a matter of preference. Some like the XB1 or 360 controller better but I've always prefer the DS controllers and the DS4 is certainly the best of the bunch.

I love the controller. But the weaker thumbsticks and battery life really stops it from being the "best ever"

Hopefully its at least decent, I am picking up my PS4 this holiday and I personally haven't held the new controller yet, so I hope its the best!

I love the Dual Shock 4 so much! But, i don't know if its the "best game pad ever". I think it is definitely best in the Dual Shock family. The only thing i don't like is the battery life is bad. Other than that, it is soooooo amazing!

I can't comment on the DS4 specifically but I never felt right with symmetrical analogue sticks. If players say it feels nicer then that's something.

I like the 360 controllers feel overall, I would say the xone but for me the shoulder bumpers are a little high for how my hand sits.
The sticks are beautiful though and the rumble triggers offer so much feel, Racing games and shooting use these very well indeed.

If I could have the insides of an xone in the shape of a 360 pad I would be in heaven.

I'm glad the DS4 is a huge improvement over its predecessor though as it always felt like a weak point for sony's consoles and gamers deserve to be comfortable while playing.
