How Scary is Until Dawn?

IGN: We locked 11 people from IGN in a room and had them play Until Dawn to answer the question. What did we discover? See for yourself.

DarkOcelet3168d ago

You wanna know what's really scary about this video...

The God damn video player!

On topic: The game looks great.

robtion3168d ago

It does look great. Nice to see some hype as I feel it's well under the radar. Really looking forward to playing this.

Sunny_D3168d ago

Wow, I didn't know they got a few notable actors to play the characters in this game including Hayden Panatierre. Hmmmm, I'm really interested in this game now since I see they put a lot of effort into the cast.

I think this is the perfect game to play with lights off and with headphones. I am glad this game is getting some spot light

Gatsu3167d ago

I don't think any game can scare me like P.T. did for a while... But this still might be a pretty great game, but not sure is it scary. I will have to play it and see :).

SuperbVillain3167d ago

i dont get why IGN cant fix their shit. i always have to watch their video reviews on youtube

purpleblau3167d ago

typical Hollywood horror movie styled game, it doesn't scare your soul, just your mind for a short of time. It's not as nearly scary as Silent Hills PT.

TheGreatGamer3168d ago

IGN always does this with these type of games and it always comes off as really disingenuous and I'd bet most of it's acting. Nice try though. I'd purchase day one if it wasn't a fully priced game but I'll get it in a couple of months pre-owened because £43 is too much for a QTE game for me

Rimeskeem3168d ago

Good thing there are 9 different ending and incredibly high replay ability.

Ceaser98573613168d ago

9 different endings? I read there are more than 9 different endings...

Stallion3168d ago

>incredibly high replay value
>in a QTE game

u wot

GTgamer3168d ago

@stallion walking dead by telltale is 90% QTE and yet it won game of year and had allot of replay value because of the choices so please sit the hell down :/
Who the hell are you to people not to be interested in a game I enjoy these genres of games bruh I know that might blow your small mind.

Stallion3167d ago

@GTgamer

Walking Dead cost 20-30 dollars. Walking Dead's success came from it's well written story and established franchise success. Walking Dead has been criticized for it's "Illusion of choice," which basically kills replayability. No matter what you did, you got the same ending.

I might even buy this game if it wasn't 60 dollars. But these type of games have become a quick, cheap, and profitable way to have an amateur developer (see supermassive, see Telltale) make a quick buck off of ideas rather than game design. It was cool at first (for 30 dollars), but supporting a game like this with a 60 dollar price tag is just hurting innovation.

You're only meant to share opinions on games you want to play otherwise it is considered as trolling as all you will spout is negative nonsense. FYI

DillyDilly3168d ago

Sony fan boys do it as well. Stop acting like the Sony fan base is all innocent on here

BitbyDeath3168d ago

Doesn't make it ok, set the example for others to follow. Most are likely trolling because they are aggravated from others also trolling. Break the wheel.

OB1Biker3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

Just remap your controller to press triangle or square instead.. sorted ;)

Am-No-Hero3168d ago

"I'd purchase day one if it wasn't a fully priced game"

Wow really !! , so u want this game to be half price ?
an AAA game with 9 different ending with this graphics? .. man u dont have to be in every article to show us u care about what sony have , we know u love ur mama MS so plz save yourself

TricksterArrow3168d ago

Just clarifying that the game does not have 9 endings, but actually hundreds, as stated by the dev since last year. We have 8 characters, all of which can die or survive. The possible combinations alone already secure a larger number of endings than 9.

robtion3168d ago Show
The7Reaper3168d ago

Just rent it if you don't want to buy it full price go to Redbox or Family Video if there's one of those near you.

Spotie3168d ago

See, I don't understand what QTEs has to do with the worth of a game. Even without your well-documented history, that alone would be enough to question the honesty of your comment. But couple that... odd... remark with your less than subtle distaste for Sony-related ANYTHING, and, well...

LamerTamer3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

Because QTEs aren't fun. It isn't gameplay, a trained chimp can press a button when it's icon is flashed on the screen. They are even immersion breaking because you stop looking at the environment and just watch for that icon to pop up. I don't care what system they are on but QTEs suck. They are a lazy substitute for real AI and gameplay.

kfk3168d ago

@LamerTamer:

Here's the argument to the contrary:

You know what the controller scheme for literally hundreds of FPS looks like? Aim, Shoot, Grenade, Switch Weapon, Reload, Jump, Run, Crouch/Slide, Melee, Zoom. Any time I see that, I'm immediately bored out of my mind because I know the next few hours are going to be just those actions; it feels restrictive and like I've done it a million times before.

Whereas the TellTale games, Life Is Strange, Quantic Dream games, and now Until Dawn are becoming so popular because their QTE and choice-based gameplay, or "lazy substitute" as you put it, allows for contextual choices that lead to a far more diverse array of actions than can be done with a static button layout.

Being a skeptic is one thing, and I highly encourage that...however you need to empathize here with the people who are skeptical of your assessment.

1. It comes off as "concern trolling" where you're feigning interest. This is perpetuated by your comment history. It's unfortunate, but people who do this are often in other articles calling others out for the same thing. I don't follow your comments to really know where you stand here; frankly, I don't care. I only know what I catch in articles I comment on.

2. It comes off as cynical to say that these people are likely acting and pointing out that you're not going to support the developers by buying it pre-owned. That's just douchey to add in there.

Hope that makes sense. Nothing wrong with an opinion, so long as it's genuine. Not saying you're not, but I'm an open minded person and I have a hard time believing you. Of course, you don't need to care what I think and I hope you don't. This post is purely to aid you in your introspection.

No, you don't have to praise this game, but you are bringing an element of negativity to people being scared which is a positive for this game's audience.

You will have a legit beast back log! That is going to be a great buy!

You'll be needing this..

robtion3168d ago

Nice. Bloodborne in particular is just amazing. Give The Order a try too. Flawed but still great game despite some bad press.

LamerTamer3168d ago

Oh man don't tell the guy to get The Odor. It is a terrible short QTE fest with no gameplay.

I would suggest a rental or if you can get it in the bargain bin for $10.00.

Spotie3168d ago

No gameplay would mean it played itself. That it was not a game.

It certainly did NOT do that.

_-EDMIX-_3168d ago

Agreed. Get The Order, its pretty cheap now and a great once over.

Don't listen to junk press, I played it and its almost nothing like what many have claimed it to be. Its very much a game, short but worth the great story and crazy action scenes.

A series to look out for.

Haru3168d ago

Looks great tbh I wish there were more horror games coming out I don't even know if there are any other scary games coming out this year beside this one

sactownlawyer9163168d ago

Soma comes out next month ps4/pc horror game.

DLConspiracy3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

I'm a huge horror fan and I will tell you there are far more horror games on PC. Not to slight the Consoles. I own both the next gen.

I'm picking this up though. Day one. There is another horror slasher game coming out called Sumber Camp. To consoles and PC. Not sure when.

DigitalRaptor3168d ago

SOMA is out in September. Looks terrifying.

Killing Floor 2 is out now on early-access for PC, but coming to PS4 this year.

WeAreLegion3168d ago

Super excited for the game, but I don't expect any scares. It doesn't seem particularly scary. Just fun and entertaining.

BitbyDeath3168d ago

I dunno, considering hiding is an option you should get those same feels as you did in Outlast whilst hiding in a locker.

WitWolfy3168d ago

I see where you're coming from but this is all scripted though... Hiding in the locker is half of the game.

scark923168d ago

I expect it to be incredibly intense! Which is what sells it for me.

iceman063168d ago

Much like the campy horror movies of the 80's, I don't think it will be psychologically scary, but there will be those jump scares...like the early Resident Evil games. I just enjoy the fact that they seem to be TRULY going for that campy horror feel. I'm sure the game will be rife with memes a plenty.

Doesn't look any different to the ps4 version. Hope it's not another lazy Sony remaster a.k.a remake.

Andy_Dee60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

Wrong, they even showed it on the last State of Play and I just played it the month before since I wanted to go back to it.

It does look better and more cleaned up, it's not a remake at least what they said. They said remaster so this article is wrong from the info I've heard.

Until Dawn is getting remastered to coincide with the live-action movie.

https://www.polygon.com/240...

https://youtu.be/pnbxcNmUcQ...

https://blog.playstation.co...

So not a Lazy remake and yes it looks better! :)

CrimsonWing6960d ago

It’s pretty different looking.

Neonridr60d ago

I'm sure it's a fair upgrade seeing as it's UE5 now. That being said, the original was not ugly by any stretch and I can't fully understand the need to remake this other than a cash grab to coincide with the movie that is coming eventually.

Crows9059d ago

Please point to me to a lazy remake?

A good game, had some fps troubles on ps4. So hopefully thats ironed out with some better looking graphics.

solideagle60d ago

I think Sony should rename PlayStation to RemakeStation. I am a Playstation fan but this is getting ridiculous. I think this is the weakest gen software-wise compared to all other gen.

PS2 > PS3 > PS1 > PS4 > PS5

Battlestar2360d ago

Agreed. Sony has released only remasters/remakes of games and noting new. MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all.

solideagle60d ago

I have never owned or cared about Xbox, so I don't have any opinion about that. if you say that MS has released then I believe you I guess

Terry_B60d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2 , Horizon Forbidden West to name a couple.

And what Microsoft released in the last couple of years was way beyond the league of those listed games.

MrNinosan60d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West to mention a few of the good ones.
Then everything on PSVR2.
Then we have the bad ones, like Destruction AllStars and medium ones like Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

On top of that, there are lots of third party games.

Compare that to MS.
Redfall, MS Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, Forza Motorsport, Starfield, HiFi Rush. Did I miss anything?

Now lets compare the games, and see which console had the best start this generation.

solideagle60d ago

I think Sony should have abandoned the PS4. we have not seen true PS5 potential yet. where are those games that would load Assets from SSD where the character is looking <-- Mark Cerny

I hope all new games from Sony Studios are PS5 only from now...

CrimsonWing6960d ago

What’s worse is this gen is almost over, if you can believe it.

staticall59d ago

@solideagle
I completely agree with you. At first it was like «Hey, so cool, i've never played this game and it's getting a remake, means it'll be much better!» but now it's «Come on, i was just playing that, it still looks and plays just fine». I want to play new games, try new experiences, hear new stories from new characters. It's like gaming companies have hired George Lucas as a consultant or something.

@Battlestar23
> MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all
Suuuuuuuure, dude. Come on, be real.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro60d ago

Looks like the PS4 version. Lol, that'd be 70 bucks.

Machina59d ago

Cheap and quick way to fill in the release calendar in-between major new games - that's why pretty much all the major publishers have been doing it.

This is a fun game. But remaking this is lazy. A cheap remaster while a new game is being developed would have had more value for the customer.

EvertonFC75d ago

Yeah I here ya, I'm on the fence tbh as I think the haptics could be really cool but it seems a little early.
I guess it's to tie in with the movie release so makes sense somewhat.

outsider162475d ago

This over Killzone remake? Or Socom 2 remake?

monkey60275d ago

Less effort and there's a movie release to tie into.
I am very tired of all these remakes and remasters of games from recent years. If they're going to remake anything it should be a lot older.

Chevalier74d ago

If the Resistance trilogy on PS3 was being remade I would buy that day 1. Really hope the franchise returns along with Killzone

JEECE75d ago

Socom 2 remake wouldn't be worth the effort. I don't know the exact number it finally sold, but from looking at articles from a few years after launch, it looks to have gotten in the ballpark of 3 million. It has been twenty years now so many of those people probably don't even play games anymore, and the people who play multiplayer games now would start whining about Socom about three weeks after launch about how "there isn't enough content" and "they just sent it out to die." Granted, it would probably develop a small but dedicated player base from the old crowd who want a stable, solid multiplayer game instead of a live service, but that isn't a lucrative proposition for Sony.

EvertonFC75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

It was the same when millions of gamers asked for a sly remake then when the game came out it sold like 10,000 copies.
Sometimes we think we want the old games then in reality nobody ever buys it 😂🤣

outsider162474d ago

You have a point though. I guess we want it because of nostalgia. Was hoping we'd get a socom with a good single player and ofcourse multiplayer, maybe it'll sell well.
