Today Sony Computer Entertainment announcement system software update 2.57 will be released “soon” on PS4. What does it do? Stability.

yea... sony pretty much sucks when it comes to updates. just look at the ps3, its pretty much the same situation as now. get 5 stability updates spread over a year then get we finally get an update with like three worthwhile features while they still ignore tons of blatantly obvious features.

ehh but hey it could be worse i remember back when the ps3 didn't have in game xmb for like 3 years and we'd be getting stability update after stability update. id be furious every time. how could something this important be put off for such a long time. meanwhile xbox 360 had an OS redesign every 2 years. smh

Well there was an article yesterday about having to restart the PS4 sometimes when you press eject to switch it on while in rest mode.. doesnt make sense to make fun about minor updates now while complaining about minor glitches.

Well on the upside it feels nice and smooth and Rocket league is now working fine for me...

where before it was making my PS4 scream.. now it runs fine.. so who knows maybe stability just fixes a few things that were not running smoothly..

Rocket league made your ps4 scream bc in the menu, if you panned your car around and looked at too much grass, it caused it to freak out, but it is fixed now. Amazing game!

They should probably stop releasing these small updates altogether. Bundle them into one larger one later that has at least one feature. People may wonder why the updates are further apart, but at this point these updates just end up creating little events where people bitch about updates.

Not going to sit here and say I wouldn't like some of these other features. Obviously I would. But I guess I'm happy enough with the console that I largely don't mind. I would like folders though. There is so much the XMB on PS3 got right over this cluttered PS4 interface.

If the update improves things, release it when it's ready. Who cares what the trolls and haters want to say. As a PS4 owner, I'm fine with any update that doesn't break stuff. I don't care if it has tons of features that I'm not likely to use. Same would be true for any console I may own...release the updates that need to be released for whatever reason when they're ready. Let the haters hate so they can feel good about themselves, while we can have what the console maker feels is needed to make the console work.

When the big features are ready, release them. No reason to delay other stuff just to get some positive vibes on forums.

This is what happens when you're in the lead of the console war, you stop trying. I'm sure sony have some great system updates on the way but are they in a hurry to release them, no. Microsoft is doing what sony was doing earlier last console gen, and it's working especially that BC stuff that everyone is so fond of, because it can help them get an increase of units if they market it correctly. I wish sony would keep giving us the same amount of udates Xbox is getting, as someone mentioned, I would really like to be notified when my friends are online.

I don't really mind the stability updates. It's good to hear they're polishing the OS. Sony seems to be using the Spring & Fall update approach like the Xbox 360. Last 2 major updates were 2.0 (Fall 2014) and 2.50 (Spring 2015). Next one should be near the end of October like 2.0 which coincides with Paris Games Week (10/28 - 11/1).

Waiting for some new stuff for sure. PS3 was updated at a much faster rate (although I swear it was like a two to three year wait for in-game xmb). Even just better/more media support would make me happy at this point. Enough of this USB stick nonsense. Let us use the hard drive like last gen. Also... Psone classics anybody?

I know that PSN has its problems but constant shut downs is a bit much you think. I mean do you play 24 7. How long has it been down for you in the past week? Most people have fulltime jobs, girlfriends/wives, other interests besides video games, oh and that major time sucker called KIDS.

Oh well, I guess its the it thing to bash a service thats up at LEAST 95% of the time and i could add a couple of points to that but hey its down constantly....people now days love to blow things out of proportion. Features that we really NEED!!!
Sony is really getting on my nerves with these Stability updates.

1) Online friend notfications
2) Last sign in
3) Custom wallpapers
4) Folders ( I could do without, but still need it)
5) An option to delete demo's and betas
6) Offline trophies
7) Offline/Away status
and that's about it..

Btw, you can delete demo/betas, just go over to the game you want to delete, press the options button and click on the delete option. Also, PSN already has away statuses. Just letting you know.

I'd like to know where that "Away" status is because you might be the only one. Only I PS3 did we see the option to change it so it appeared yellow to let people know you were away or busy. It would also have your name at the bottom of the list of your online friends (not the whole list). You can do it on PS3 and does show up yellow on PS4 which means it could easily exist.

Just letting you know, last gen the way it worked for software updates on x360 was a spring update, then a fall update. 6 months apart. To me it's always been like that. So idky you feel that 6 months isn't right? Especially if it is a big update wouldn't it require a big amount of time, idk say maybe 6 months?

But they still show in the library and it is really annoying. I have Evolve on there twice. Once for the technical test that didn't even work and one for the beta test. Now that the game is out, those unusable tiles are still in my library.

An overhaul of the OS layout in general would be appreciated. The 15 most recent apps update helped a bit but it just felt like a shortcut to compensate for a horribly planned out design. XMB has been the best console OS ever imo. Vita also suffered a downgrade with that bubble OS.

Folders could be used for this to at least hide them. I think that may need a change to the set up of PSN though, so it'll likely be coming. At least a way to hide certain items with a "show all" option would be sufficient.

I was playing Wolfenstien The New Order last night and the UI was running extremely slow when I was looking at trophies and stuff.

@skate, I loved the new order. Bethesda softworks did a great job. The one that came out last gen was awful and the only other good one I remember on consoles was Tides of War. Best original xbl game. Heck the multiplayer was better than halo. Wish they'd bring it back.

Well let me rephrase that. Let me use 1.76 TB that I had available to use when I swapped my old hdd to new 2Tb hdd. At first after installation I had 1.76TB of free space to use. After I installed most of the games I wanted to install I'm left with 83GB of free space that I cannot use. I can't install anything no patch, nothing. No even Minecraft and that game isn't even 1GB. Although it did let me install the new 2.57 system update. I could install like 2 more games with that 83GB left.

If I'm understanding you correctly, it is reported that you have 83GB of free space after installing your content. However, you can't use that space to install anything else? If i understand you correctly, the 83GB of free space is proper according to the amount of stuff you installed(and the system OS)?

If so, then here's the problem.

PS4 still reserves a set amount of drive space for OS purposes. Namely, in this case, that 15 minutes of video that is being recorded continuously on the system. This isn't allocated to reserved space within the OS reserve, because it can also be turned off. In addition, some games require swap files on the disc, which is where this space you have extra is being used, so it's still reserved by the OS.

Sony can't really change the swap file thing, because there are games that use it, about all they can do is change the reported free space.

however, there is something you can do. You can turn off game recording, which will free up some of it.

You can also turn off automatic updates and downloads, but not sure if this would free up that space for use....can't find a confirmation on it.

From my understanding, there is a reserved space for system updates, and the free space reported shouldn't be a factor for these.

Otherwise, I'd suggest doing a system clean up. 83GB of free space isn't really that much. Big retail games are easily clocking in at 40-50GB's now. The chance that you are playing all those things is pretty slim, so deleting them may be worthwhile. If you buy retail, the reinstalls are generally pretty fast, and even downloads don't require a full download. I'd recommend having at least 200GB of free space at all times....for no reason other than that's what I'd do on the stock drive.

Thing is with uninstalling games you also get rid of the patches. Let's say for example I want to install Last of Us Remastered. So to clear up some space so I uninstall Elder Scrolls Online. After when I'm done with TLOU:R I'd like to play TESO:TU again so I do uninstalling and installing other way around but now I have to wait few hours for a 15GB PATCH TO DOWNLOAD to be able to play that game. If only patches would be saved on console like your game saves when uninstalling games then I wouldn't have this problem with space.

Well...yeah, I can see the problem there. Curious though, assuming you're using about 1.5TB for games, it seems that there is probably some that you don't boot up that often and likely don't have huge update files.

I mean, it seems you'd be right on the cusp of having to do deletes for any new game you get with only 83GB's left. It just sees that even if Sony allowed you to use it, it wouldn't really solve your problems for very long.

Personally, I would like to install a HD bigger than 2TB without having to buy that Nyko attachment. Either requires some case modification, HD getting bigger at that footprint, Sony enabling external support for games, or jerryrigging something which isn't obvious.
