Shenmue 3: 10 Things It Must Do To Appeal To The Modern Gamer

Shenmue is very much a product of its time and there are many things that the games it inspired have done to change the industry in the years since its release. The fans’ money is in the bag, but the third in the series is going to have to do a lot differently to appeal to the modern gamer.

No Job System!!!

That to me is the biggest thing the new Shenmue has to change!

gangsta_red3200d ago

I guess no one here played Shenmue 2...

ThatOneRiggaNob3200d ago

I'm going to have to disagree big time lol. I loved my forklifting job in Shenmue 1. I didn't finish shenmue 2 so I don't know if there was a job on that game.

_-EDMIX-_3200d ago

lolz, yes...less features is what the Shenmue fans want.

Go play something else please, if you don't like the concept, you have other choices bud. I don't get folks trying to change the main point of the game to fit other genres, that isn't what made Shenmue such a ground breaking game. They took risk and fans loved it, I want that same concept in Shenume 3..

This is about going forward not backwards.

Piff....no jobs? less QTE? Soooo make it Assassins Creed or something?

gangsta_red3200d ago

Less features? Who said anything about less features...you mean they can't come up with a better system than what they had in Shenmue 2 which was probably the most tedious part of the game?

So keep the gameplay the same as when it was released in 1999 right?

"I don't get folks trying to change the main point of the game to fit other genres, that isn't what made Shenmue such a ground breaking game."

Because what was groundbreaking then isn't groundbreaking now.

Maybe read the article and figure out that this person is not trying to change the main point of the game but update it to fit today's gaming "bud". You know move it forward as you even said.

You think the gameplay design that was introduced in 1999 will fly today? You really want more QTE's? A tedious job system? Ok "bud".

_-EDMIX-_3200d ago

@G-red- "No Job System!!!

That to me is the biggest thing the new Shenmue has to change!"

"Less features? Who said anything about less features"

No Job system, means zero job system bud.

Or can you not properly convey what your thinking to what your posting? We can't read minds.

No job system.

That is what you stated.

We don't want less, we want more of what Shenmue 1 and 2 was as we want Shenmue 3, not Assassins Creed....

"So keep the gameplay the same as when it was released in 1999 right?"

Expand it...

I see no reason why the concept needs to have "no job system" that is a key staple into what Shenmue actually was, allowing for a day and night cycle, days you worked, picking up items, buying food, items etc with the money you earned etc.

Why change that concept when that very much is the Shenmue concept?

"You think the gameplay design that was introduced in 1999 will fly today?"

Who said anything about design bud? your stating no job system.....

They should 100% keep the job system and add on too it, never said anything about it being the same, never said anything about design.

Design is how it plays, concept is the idea of what it is.

No one stated to keep it exactly, 100% the same, merely the idea of having a job must still be in the game.

Your trying to spin having "no jobs" as "having different design"....yet you never stated that and I believe its a given that it won't play the same and will feel much different then from 1999, I'm pretty sure that doesn't even need to be stated lol.

Soooooooo your whole "no job system" can go down the toilet with that mess, we want a job system, get your moot, straw man bs out of here.

Yes...by saying I want a Job system MUST ONLY MEAN I want it to be the EXACT SAME DATED DESIGN, yup that must mean ONLY THAT!/s

lolz, your post are very sad these days Red...

"No Job System!!!

That to me is the biggest thing the new Shenmue has to change!"

Wants less features as in "no job system" ie doesn't want the feature in at all, then claims they just want it changed.

"No" means "changed to something else" folks in G-Reds mind lol

Please...go back and read what you stated please.

gangsta_red3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

NO JOB SYSTEM

See, if you had read the article then you would know that was the title for point number 8. In it the author says that either it needs to go away or change.

Which is why I said:

"That to me is the biggest thing the new Shenmue has to change!"

You see that...CHANGE, not GO AWAY!

How about you go back and ACTUALLY READ THE ARTICLE. hey bud?

http://whatculture.com/gami...

So do I have to further go into explanation on what or how the job system should be changed bud? I'm not and never said it should go away, just thought I would repeat that for the millionth time bud.

It's funny that you even quoted me and still couldn't even get it right. If only people would read the article before turning into rabid attack dogs.

"Piff....no jobs? less QTE? Soooo make it Assassins Creed or something?"

Obviously you don't want much to change or...or am i getting that wrong also....

Less QTE's makes the game like Assassins Creed? How and why is that? GTA has less QTE's, is that like AC? Sleeping Dogs, Yakuza little to know QTE's...how is having less QTE's or 'no jobs" making the game more like AC?

Shenmue 2 still had a part time Job lol I guess you never played Shenmue 2

Spotie3200d ago

Since there IS a job system in both games already released, starting your comment off with "No job system" sure as hell sounds like you want the change to be that there IS NO job system.

You're not agreeing that the job system should change, otherwise you would have said that. And not once- until responding to me- do you even attempt to clarify that. It's only after people call you out that you try to defend what you said.

We're not as stupid as you wish.

maniacmayhem3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

"You're not agreeing that the job system should change,"

Actually he is, he said it only a handful of times to you and EDMIX.

"We're not as stupid as you wish."

Lol! that would be too easy.

It was pretty obvious that he was referring to one of the points made in the article. Maybe, just maybe that is why he put it as a title header then commented it on the next line.

Maybe if you and others spent more time actually discussing the topic instead of attacking and accusing people of trolling every time their comment is different from yours you wouldn't be made to look so foolish.

magiciandude3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

@Hicken

From the article, which you clearly didn't read-

"Shenmue 3: 10 Things It Must Do To Appeal To The Modern Gamer
8. No Job System

The forklift driving sections of Shenmue 1 were brilliant mostly because they were constantly broken up by battles with the Mad Angels, as well as playing an important part in the actual story.

The jobs in Shenmue 2…not so much.

Jobs in Shenmue 2 felt like a real chore. From carrying crates with that idiot Delin – who couldn’t walk backwards in a straight line if his life depended on it – to losing money trying to win games of Lucky Hit, the job system slowed the game down enormously for those who didn’t want to exploit the gambling dens to get some quick cash.

While this wouldn’t have been so bad if they were an optional part of the game, there are numerous points where Ryo needs to raise a large amount of money to meet people, which meant you would have to do some work unless you had a good collection of capsule toys or gambled successfully."

Here's the big kicker

"If the job system is to be kept, it either needs to pay very well or should not be an integral part of the game to ensure it holds the modern gamer’s attention."

See Hicken, you keep making yourself look more and more foolish. And have you even played Shenmue II? Maybe you give it a try and see for yourself.

And ironically you keep accusing everyone of being stuck in the past for preferring turn-based battles in the FF7 remake. Now you're up in arms whenever someone wants a change in the job system? :/

No thanks modern gamer. This game is being made with the fan base in mind. The ones who have asked for it and the ones who ultimately funded it.

MadMax3200d ago

Yea, i completely agree!!!

Blank3200d ago

It must do nothing to appeal to "modern gamers" its up to Ryo Suzaki and those whom funded this game, which are the fans so with that said it defaults to Ryo Suzaki direction.

Pillsbury13200d ago

IT doesn't have to appeal to modern gamers, it has to appeal to the fans that have waited years and then gave up because we thought it would never come.

Never say never, I really didn't expect to ever see Space Marine 2 and 12 years later its almost here.
So there is still hope for all these games.

Chocoburger68d ago

I've completed 5 of the games on the list, but the author forgot to include Advent Rising. It was supposed to be a trilogy, but it bombed hard, and the two sequels never got made. It was Mass Effect, a console generation before Mass Effect.

The game is buggy and unpolished, it needed a few more months of development, but the potential was there. At the end of the game, you have all these super abilities, I remember the stomp attack that created a shockwave being especially powerful.

shinoff218368d ago

I personally think days gone will recieve some sort of sequel at some point. I'm personally also hoping it's not the rumored multiplayer online stuff. I'd think most that enjoyed it would rather thisnto.

Knightofelemia68d ago

Sony needs to dust off Sly Cooper and Days Gone so needs a sequel two of my favorite Sony titles. Bulletstorm I love great game wish it also got a sequel. And I wish Namco would finally give Enslaved a sequel another great game.

Dragon's Dogma and XCOM 2 are the best deals. The rest of the games are still overpriced. I would say 8.99 is good for AC: Origins, but you need to put $10 more into MTs to avoid the grind that slows down the story. So, the game is actually 18.99.

It's not on this list, but Pathfinder: Kingmaker is only $9.99. This is a deal if you have a current gen. consoles, as it runs poorly on prev. gen.

hangdang681d ago

I beat AC origins without grinding or spending any money on MTX?

anast680d ago

I had to grind for side missions. So, did many other people.

Has anyone been able to login in to the ps store on ps5 I haven't been able to in days and my network is good.

RedDevils680d ago

Reset or shutdown your PS5. I always can go login to PS5, in fact just a moment ago.

HeliosHex680d ago

Hey thanks again. Although the shutdown/reset didn't work i found that resetting the mdm and hub did the trick. I use a Lan network instead of wifi. In case anyone has a similar setup and problem.

RedDevils679d ago

I forgot to mention about the router reset, that usually do the trick when it come to network problems happen with iphone/android. btw np
