Can Rise of the Tomb Raider compete with Fallout 4 on November 10?

Fallout 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are releasing on the same exact day of November 10. Is Lara Croft about to face her biggest obstacle yet?

Nobody said they shouldn't be proud, but should they be if the sales are bad? I mean, it's their collective faults if it sells bad. It might just create a strenuous relationship between SE and MS the same way Ubisoft feels about Nintendo.

Doesn't do much harm if they delay it and its only likely going to do some good by not having it be completely under Fallout's shadow. Sure, people who are looking forward to ROTR will be disappointed but I want to see the game not be a critical failure and with its current release date, it's got the telltale signs of one. There's not much to be proud of if they're just hurting the franchise.

Guarantee Square is kicking themselves, there is now way MS put up enough money to cover the huge loss they are going to take not having their game on PS4. I'am a fallout fan and obviously gonna pick it up on the launch, but we can't underestimate tomb raider, we love fallout but lara is simply one the most famous character of gaming industry, so don't worry fallout is not gonna be any kind of nightmare to rise of tomb raider, both will sell equally great, tomb raider is gona sell great because it is a mainstream game just like cod, people use to buy them just for having some fun gaming hours.

This is true. But, the apple pie has been sampled a couple of years ago. While the lemon pie hasn't seen the light of day in about 4 years.
I get that people CAN buy both (and some most likely WILL). But, not everybody is made of money. Some people have limits to their gaming budget. So, putting these two games out at the same time DOES create competition between the two...regardless of their inherent differences in genre.

Yes, they are different and this is why both games will sell very well. No one is going to spend a month playing Tomb Raider to beat it. Where as you could be playing Fallout 4 for a long time. I'm getting both games. Beat Tomb Raider within a week and they jump onto Fallout 4. I don't see a problem with either of these games selling well. If this was Fallout 4 and say Skyrim or GTA VI, then there might be a problem.

Let's not forget both the lemon and the apple pies are great....um pies..but one of those pies can only be baked by one particular oven..While the other can be baked my any oven of your liking...so there's on one hand you may have to buy an oven to bake a pie or you already have other ovens to bake the other...thus no new oven is needed to bake......ahhhhhhhhhhh you get the point.
Also one of these pies hasn't been baked in years so people want to taste that goodness they've been missing while the other has been baked twice in two years...last year's having better ingredients but overall same taste...

I would have to disagree, at least for most X1 owners. I would say Halo 5 is a larger release for the majority of X1 owners. Cant speak for Ps4 owners. F4, RoTTR and Halo5 will all sell on the platform, its a good holiday for X1 owners. Not saying it isnt on Ps4, as I am sure there is plenty to choose from there as well.

I feel a little bad for Square? Crystal Dynamics. With the MS deal going head to head with Uncharted likely at least factored into their thought process. They probably realised it wasnt necessary after that got delayed but were happy that clash was avoided.

I don't, they chose to make the deal, and now they're stuck with it, and even if they release on PS4 in 2016, they now have to go up against the game they were trying so hard to avoid, and with TR being a 2nd hand game by then it's going to get completely destroyed by Uncharted 4 on PlayStation.

I only feel bad because I have a feeling that MS isn't going to spend a lot of time marketing the game this holiday. It's going to be all about Halo and GeOW remake and Forza. It's their big guns, and they have no reason to market ROTTR to counteract UC4.

On top of that, any money that MS agreed to pay for marketing has been at least half spent. They have had commercials with ROTTR featured since last years E3 announcement. MS isn't likely to go over budget on the marketing for this game.

But that's the way the industry goes. You can't predict everything, and sometimes deals don't work out the way you want them too.

Based on the e3 2015 Pre/Post Hype, FO4 seems to gain the most interest from the gamer. Personally not into a brighter version of FO3 made by Obsidian with Tower Defense and "Build you own Crib!" ;) but based on the hype, TR has no chance at all, FO4 will be avaib. on 3 platforms.

It's not like people can only buy one. I think FO4 will stall ROTTR day one sales initially, but it'll probably do alright over the holidays. There are also people who don't care for FO games, and may just choose to buy ROTTR. Or they may not get either. It's not the first time that two big games came out on the same day, and it's very common for small games to come out on the same day as big midnight release games.

It was never about how much damage RoTR will do to FO4 because there will be none considering how massive FO fanbase there is but it's always about how much sales-wise damage RoTR can handle for releasing on the same day as FO4.

I'm not a fan of both but RoTR is a slowly reviving franchise while FO4 is, simply said, a juggernaut! Worst of all MS has a dip for marketing in both of these games. MS need to market them equally or they will ruin the deal with both SE and Bethesda and with that in mind, there is no way TR will ever get much attention compared to FO.

The only saving grace for TR that I can think of is to have MS make a mega bundle of FO4 + TR which is not totally unthinkable at this point considering how aggressive they were last holiday, at least in the US. This way, they can push both and TR will still be sold but at the expense of MS own pocket. It's nothing new for them, right? They did the same thing with Titanfall where they basically gave away with every new Xbone.

If that is to happen, I'm not complaining. It's a win win for those in the market for Xbone during that time of the year. More value for those guys!

I don't see microsoft bundling them 2 games. They will most likely do a halo bundle with mcc & halo 5 or bundle halo 5 & gears together for the holidays. That way they don't have to pay out to both developers. Maybe a tomb raider bundle also with both games like the assassin's creed bundle last year.

In term of sales, no ...even when we are just talking only about Fallout 4 on XB1, Tomb Raider will not outsell it. But having said that, it really doesn't matter as the both games will have ample time to sell in the Holiday from Black Friday to Christmas. Last year, Dragon Age Inquisition, Far cry 4, and Assassin's Creed Unity all released on the same day and all did great so it is a non issue really. For me, it means more games to play this holiday, can't never have enough quality games. :)

TR and SF5 are completely different. SF5 would not happen without Sony and Capcom said as much, Sony funded it because Capcom was not going to.

Tomb Raider was confirmed for PS4, then later retracted and made timed exclusive for Xbox One.

Sony paid for a game to be made, Microsoft paid to keep a game off of a competitors product which was going to be made regardless, for all platforms.

SFV is on PC so it is not even exclusive. Tomb Raider' other platform(s) is unknown at this time as it could end up like Dead Rising 3 and comes out only on PC later. Everything else is speculation at this point just like insiders were 100% sure a PS4 version of Titanfall was going to be released and here we are today. Also, just like Dead Rising 3, MS is the publisher of Tomb Raider. Keep that in mind.

If it comes it comes, if not, just get the platform it is on if you wanna play it..it is just that simple.

This is the most out of reality thing I've ever read in my life.

First of all, each game must be treated as a unique piece of art, not a competition, but based on the SF x KI, I have to say that, no even the mighty Mortal Kombat with its sales and great gameplay could manage to reach the importance of Street Fighter.

By the way, if there is a "competition" among exclusive fighting games I believe that Guilty Gear is the one to compete with Killer Instinc and guess what? It has a better combat system!

I think Fallout 4 will top RTR numbers wise but if RTR can have a really good Gamescom showing it might pick up some steam given many have been less than thrilled by Fallout 4's graphical "shine". Yes, the game can be on PS4, however square enix has to pay for the game and remake the game for the ps4 essentially. Why do you think a game like Ninja Gaiden sigma 2 ended up on ps4 or dead rising ended up on the wii when Microsoft was the publisher?
Mass effect was the one exception, but that was because Microsoft sold the game to ea. That is why phil spencer said it is up to Square Enix where the game ends up on. Microsoft won't let the same version of the game on PS4.

Square own the game, the assets and the developers, not MS, MS wouldn't be able to stop them from putting it on other platforms, once the timed exclusivity period is over.

What's probably happened is, they won't be able to develop for the PC and PS versions, until x amount after the Xbox versions have launched (probably 6 months, the game would release about a year after). Good deal for MS, as the have a game for the Holidays, only on Xbox, a good deal for Square, as MS will be marketing the Xbox versions for them, and (unless it releases by Uncharted 4) could probably get Sony to market the other versions for them.

From all accounts the game was in development when MS swooped in, so it's not like it was funded or developed by MS. To my recollection, it's not even being published by MS. That means that SE and CD could theoretically do pretty much what they want with it once the exclusivity period ends.

January to March 2016 for tomb raider ps4 launch, that is way too optimistic. 6- 12 months for pc release, 12 - never for ps4 release is what I would think. This is a Microsoft published game now, so never is a real possibility now for ps4 release. Pc release within a year is almost 100% certain though.

MS put a lot into this game. I'm going to guess their exclusivity is more than 2 months. Probably a year at the least. And even then no one has ever said it's coming to PS4. I'm positive it'll hit PC eventually though. PS4 is wait and see. As someone said below, Spencer did say he would not invest in games that show up on their direct competition when referring to Tomb Raider. If it's on PS4 it did just that.

On topic TR reboot sold 8.5 million copies and fallout 3 sold 9.18 million copies. They're both big franchises and both will cannibalize sales from each other on the X1. Fallout 4 will sell more because it's on more platforms.

EDIT also want to say that Fallout 4 is vastly more different from the original Fallout than TR reboot is from TR1.

Fallout 4 is going to eclipse Fallout 3's sales due to the hype and speculation the past 5 years. Fallout was never as big as it is now and although I'm a huge fan of Tomb Raider, Fallout 4 will crush ANY game that is released the same day. It's suicide for ROTR to release the same day and it sucks because it looks really good.

If you are going to keep having the same deluded idea that Uncharted copied Tomb Raider then I pity you

I never once saw Lara roll around to get into cover where wave after wave of enemies surrounded her only for her to fight back and slaughter anyone that was in her way. All while having a massive cinematic adventure full of friends and other interesting characters which helped her on her quest. Oh and don't forget QTE, near death experiences and explosive massive events.

Tomb Raider was a third person puzzle game with shooting elements.

Uncharted is a third person action adventure shooter which has small puzzle elements

You can't copy the platformer genre as neither of them came up with it.

The only thing they have in common is that they are both treasure hunters with platform elements.

Lara doesn't just go into cover to kill waves of people. She also solves puzzles, she explores, she kills enemies (like she always has), she does platforming and she climbs. That's TR 1996 template and that's the template that both Uncharted and TR 2013 follow. Just because Uncharted focus more on shooting it doesn't change the fact that it's following that template and the same is true for TR 2013. I'd say the original Uncharted kind of copied Tomb Raider just with an improved shooting mechanic and then the Tomb Raider reboot copied the Uncharted series' improvements to the formula. The current games are pretty similar looking in how you play now.

I go game testing at EA so I'll get battlefront for free from there, halo will be a day one buy, skipping call of duty this year, never too interested in Hitman and my wife typically buys me assassin creed games for Christmas so I'll get that one then. Not too sure about forza as I'm not the hugest fan of sim racing, but mix all of those in with gears, rare replay and possibly the taken King and I'm gonna be busy with games this fall

Just read article. Tomb Raider appears to be releasing on xbox360 as well as X1. Count me out. I'm done with anything that also releases on last gen hardware. Soley for the purpose that comprises have to be made on current gen platforms to have the same game with dumbed down graphics on a last gen system. Which is why games like Witcher 3, Arkham Knight and I'm sure Fallout 4 are moving gaming ever so slightly forward with certain gaming innovations that can only be done on current gen platforms and PC's. The people over at Ubisoft have made a conscious decision to water down their product to sell as many copies as they can for Xbox systems. They will do the same for the PlayStation's in the future i'm sure. If I were Microsoft, I would be pissed. If Tomb Raider is good enough on xbox360 then this curbs last gen gamers from purchasing a new machine this year. It may be a small number, but still effects sales of Xbox1's.

Personally I would of moved tomb raider back a month into December. Fallout is out on the 10/11. Two weeks before then Assassin's is released. Two weeks after Fallout, star wars is being released.
I'm sorry, but tomb release date is the most idiotic and stupidest thing that any publisher could attempt to try. Yeah, it may get rave reviews, and yes I'm interested in playing it. But the timing is so poorly thought out that a price drop soon after is bound to happen due to poor sale. Hurting both dev and publisher more than anyone else.
