Dragon Quest Builders for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita Announced by Square Enix; First Screenshot Released

Square Enix announced today Dragon Quest Builders, that will be released this winter in Japan for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita.

This is a huge announcement out of nowhere. Another Dragon Quest game that's Playstation exclusive. There's no doubt that DQ11 will be Playstation exclusive.

This is more like 3D Dot Game Heroes on PS3 to me. A spiritual sequel perhaps.

Even that screen shot a a chibi Link -ish main character is taken straight out of 3DDGH promo poster.

This game will probably have a first person and a third person view game play.

Not that close really. Minecraft is extremely pixelated. This just has environments that are square. That's it in similarity. Many games have environments that are used with squares. Gameplay may have some similarities to Mincraft building wise though.

There are a ton of Minecraft rip offs out there. Heck the most popular was Castleminer Z, an indie game on Xbox 360.

I thought this was going to be a real DQ game and not a spin off.

Borderline plagiarism? Other than the blocks, which COUNTLESS other games have, and even a game before Minecraft had, what is it copying?

The character model, that dinosaur, the trees, the water ( from what I can tell ) all look much, much different than Minecraft.

The world is voxel, but nothing else is, and that in my opinion not only makes it very different, but better in the process.

IMO this looks leaps and bounds cooler than DQH. Might go for the Vita version depending on how it is. Hopefully it comes West early next year.

if there was anything else easier to guess than a FF7 remaster coming someday ... it would be that it wont release on 3ds since it's strongly hinted to be an home console game , and most likely not on WiiU . DQ follow the biggest platforms of each eras

I hope Square makes the right choice and it's at least a multiplatform between the home consoles. A PS exclusive main entry would be huge though.

I'll just say something quite selfish , but it's how i feel about it . Getting rid of the PS3/WiiU excess baggage would be great here . If multi , make it PS4/XB1 (and pc ? why not)

Dragon Quest isnt always about getting the best graphics and realisations , but sometimes they had truly stellar pushes in that direction on top of the other many qualities .

I'd quite like the next DQ to not look like a ps3 version with a better resolution , AA and framerate , like many current and upcoming jrpgs .

And DQ is quite strong enough a brand to push "next gen" sales that way without worrying about the previous gen .

Of course it's not a dealbreaker , just a wish here

It's nice , but it's over ten years later on handhelds . All while the main entries were playable on ps3 via ps1 and ps2 comp and re-released and remade over time ? Except of course IX

And considering SE's track record with remasters , and the existence of ps classics or ps now ?

It's nice , again , escially wia few additions and bonuses , but in the mean time yeah i'll pick the new titles as a priority

Dragon Quest VIII

So how is the main entries playable on PS3 if only four were available to be played.

Yup my bad , i could have swore the compilation for earlier DQ were on psx or ps2 too , but it was on Wii .

Still it at least doesnt affect me personally , it's all titles i played at their actual releases , and that are quite often re-released , even on ios/android and will keep getting re-releases over time .

i'll still pick new games instead

I think we next dragon quest game in the mainline series maybe exclusive to ps4, in the west it may come out on other consoles. Either way this looks good and can't wait to find out more

It looks like square are switching sides from Nintendo to Playstation, and business wise that's the accurate call to make. There has to be some seriously big check from a console maker for them to skip a Ps4 version even for limited time. And iF ps4 keeps selling like this than I don't see many AAA games from 3rd parties skipping a Ps4 version or being timed exclusive

for me, ANYTHING's better than Minecraft, I quickly deleted it after a few min. into the demo. It plays and even looks worse than a turd. I can't understand it's popularity; casual games aren't my cup of tea I guess.

Edit: Yeah I understood your comment perfectly. Some people are claiming that the announcement of this digital title confirms a proper DQ title for the system. I know that it doesn't but at least it shows that Square is interested in bringing the franchise to the system. I kind of knew this ever since they released that DragonQuest bundle in Japan.

Sorta does bud. Consider this shows that Square is favoring PS for its games.

RE Revelations was on 3DS, went to consoles later on. RE Revelations 2 went to anything but 3DS and Wii U. THEN RE2002 remaster did, then RE Zero remaster did, don't be surprised if RE7 is ONLY on PS4, XONE and PC.

I'm sorry but its hard to not see the pattern in this regard.

Nier is only on PS4, World Of FF is only coming to PS systems, Star Ocean is only coming to PS systems, its not really out of the wild to assume the next DQ is coming to only PS if you factor we already have 2 only coming to PS systems.

You can call it a "side game" all you want, but the reality is, its a series of games that is clearly coming to PS systems and not anything else, the publisher has been doing this for quite a while now and it would be stupid to not actually factor in such a pattern.

They will likely make the next DQ RPG PS only as they are already doing that with several other series.

At least you understand the support that Square is giving Sony. I remember that when they were interviewed on why they were bringing FF7 to the PS4 they said it was because they wanted to revitalize the Japanese console market. I can imagine that one of their goals would be to bring a big franchise (in Japan) like DQ to the PS4.

In no way am I saying that they confirmed DQ for the PS4 I'm just saying that's extremely probable.

There will be a proper DQ game for the PS4. My guess is that they will either announce it at TGS this year or the next.

This game was probably started before Se knew how few PS4s would sell in Japan. I mean.. The last FF14 installment has only sold 35K.. SE Cant be happy with that. Looking at sales of the new Persona 4 game on Vita is pretty depressing too. Outsold by FE if by 4 times.

A ps3 game has not been in the top 5 since 2014 and the whole sony future in Japan looks pretty depressing. Hope Americans start buying ps4 games because right now the Sony brand is dependent on 20 million ps4 consoles in countries that mainly by cod and sports games.. It is a dark future for sony..

Most of those games were being made before sony's bad sales were fully understood. Look at the current software trends for both sony consoles. Both are struggling to sell Japanese games to Japanese people. You cant spin that the future will be better. THe PS4 has been out for a year and Half. It has had so many games made for it to appeal to Japanese gamers and it is not selling.The VIta is also dropping in Sales. It had a time when it could go week on week with the 3ds now it is selling at homeconsole levels. Sony lost Japan when they let Nintendo get control of the young gamers market with the 3ds. The vita was a mess. And the PS4 launching after the west was an insult to older Japanese gamers.

Nope. Dragon Quest Heroes got it's sequel announced within months, because it sold as well as it did. Nier sequel got announced just last month, too. And Star Ocean 5.

Come on ... not only FF14 is a quite successful with a sustained and healthy community mmo base , but you know very well that it's a game that mostly sell in digital form especially with deals ...

The original game had like 250k solds in japan at retail , when in july 2015 it broke over 5 millions subscriptions ... That should tell you something even if obviously across multiple markets and 3 platforms .

And DQ heroes sold 90% of its shipment on both ps3 and ps4 at release .. and became the second highest DQ launch ...
