Gran Turismo 7 Is Missing Its Opportunity

I was very surprised that Gran Turismo 7 wasn't announced at E3 last month. I thought it was a no-brainer, not only from how far along I guesstimated developer Polyphony Digital may be with the game, but also for strategic reasons. Apart from gamers wanting to simply play the title, Sony is letting a big opportunity slip through its fingers.

GT6 was announced on it's own event and was released same year. I expect the same for GT7 or new rumour Gran Turismo Sport.

Imagine 2016. for PS4 if GT gets release:

I won't hold my breath for new SCE Bend game. Their last game released on home console (which isn't a port) was in 2004. I had high hopes for Guerilla Cambridge also and look how that turned out.

Really, they should do whatever it takes to get the games out quicker. Be it more people or less detail in graphics(Since each car took so long in GT5

what's the point ? Didnt some people complain that Gt6 didnt bring enough despite including most stuff wanted in GT5 and more ? or that it was released too close to GT6 and too soon ?

I feel some just want it out to compete against Forza , wich isnt the most important matter . At least bloggers and journalists clearly do , they get bored without their big flagships brawls . They did have the Driveclub Forza clash , despite "Driveclub insisting" it was an arcade game first , potentially sim second

Polyphony Digital is still a very small team compared to other racing game companies, also they have alot of cars they have to make 'premium' or current gen standard etc I can see why this game is taking quite some time...
Also unlike others they have to get brand new sounds for each car whereas they can just recycle those car Engine sounds

For me I think they should have a set number of cars in the game and not do premium and none premium cars as it spoils the game or it did for me with gt5.

I still don't get this concept. Every where I go and every online forum say the same thing "gameplay>graphics&quo t;. Yet somehow, when it comes to Gran Turismo, almost everyone would rather have LESS cars = less gameplay, because said cars would not be as graphically impressive as the premium cars....

Can someone please explain to me what I'm missing here?

Because from my understanding, the premiums cars and the standards all had the same realistic driving physics etc. The only difference was a graphical one. I would really, really love to understand this matter.

For me it made the game feel unfinished. It may of been more that GT5 was a mess at the start with frame rate drops and bad screen tearing but I just felt like the game was unfinished having cars that looked amazing next to cars from the PS2 version of the game.

I am not one who buys a game because of its looks but I do feel a game like GT or Forza MS there needs to be a standard of quality in them as they are sim games. It is each to there own but for me I just did not like how the game looked with premium and none premium cars.

Even some of the tracks looked like straight ports from the PS3 version of the game.

Like I said its each to there own but that is my take on it.

If Turn 10 can create new sounds and add crash damage of a list of cars (over 450) I am sure GT can do it. GT7 has been missing for quite some time now and it should be at least getting mentioned at game shows. I know GT has more cars but its on its way for 3 years development soon and FM comes out every 2 years why cant GT?

Very unfortunate that GT7 wasn't shown this year and don't know when it will actually comes out now. It us one if the game that I am very much looking forward to.

I know especially in the UK where racing games are still extremely popular, without a bonifide exclusive racer this year, it will give somewhat of an advantage to the other console in that country and UK is like the second biggest game market.

Having said that, I expect GT7 to be great when it does releases.

gt7 could be unveiled this year at tgs. there is a lot of pressure on the team and i have no doubt they will deliver. i'm hoping they can get all the cars to be of next gen models and not use old assets.

@Rookie: There's no concern trolling there. There's me questioning the sincerity of castillo's comment, since I hadn't at that point- and don't think I have, yet- seen him do anything but imply Xbox is the best in some way or another.

You failed there.

@star_lancer: Rookie literally said "it will give somewhat of an advantage to the other console." Not to gamers, not Xbox fans, not racing fans. The CONSOLE. I called that statement into question, since the XB1 is about to have its third exclusive racer(did make a counting mistake here... then again, Xbox fans DID count the F&F expansion as a whole game), and yet that hasn't translated into an advantage for the XB1. A combined 3 million in sales(VGChartz numbers, so take them with a grain of salt) likely hasn't moved much in the way of hardware.

So where is this advantage? Like Halo and Gears, fans of the franchise would most likely have gotten the game with the first available entry on the console. The third Forza game isn't likely to benefit XB1 sales much at all.

Of course, for racing fans, having the extra games is a bonus. But that wasn't anywhere NEAR Rookie's point.

That's why I like what Turn10 does on XB. In the time GT7 comes out, they'll have 4 games out, and all AAA. GT6 was great, but the wait was not worth it. I rather play a 95% awesome game than wait 3 years for the 100% perfect game.

Forza 6 looks great. Not just good looking rain and slick roads but puddles and how they effect the tire at a particular spot.

Because judging by GT5 which took ages to be released and didn't exactly launch that great, PD probably need all the time they can with their next title.

I expect the next title to be the best in the genre though. At least they are supposed to be doing physics and damage properly. I don't see many others take it as seriously as I want them to.

Exactly. Dammit Sony why don't you just COD-ify all of your IP's so that you can give video gaming "journalists" a new angle that they can go off of. Because we all know if Sony did make GT a yearly franchise, journalists would then complain about that and start spewing out articles with titles like:

"Does Sony Care About Making Quality Gran Turismo Titles Anymore?"

"Does Making Gran Turismo a Yearly Franchise Indicate It Is Losing Ground To Forza?"

"Is Gran Turismo The Blockbuster Franchise It Used To Be?"

You just Know that is how it would all unfold (at least here on N4G) if Gran Turismo went in that direction.

I think it was a better decision:

- the game won't be released before E3 2016, so there was no need to show it.
- gamers are getting tired of the announcements of games that will actually be finished after 2 or more years.
- showing the game more than a year before the release date brings the risk of downgrade PR nightmare or disappointing the fans with not impressive enough graphics.
- it's Polyphony. They got lazy after GT3. There is always a chance for them not making it in scheduled time.

I think it's more fair attitude towards gamers. I am disappointed we didn't see many of games we know that are in production, but is it really all that important to be teased with GT7 or GoW more than a year ahead?
The teasers are called teasers for a reason. ;)

Compare content of GT3 to GT4, they didnt get lazy its just that GT3 came out 2001 and the physics and gfx were insane and made a big impression on ppl including me.

It depends how do you look at Polyphony.
If you treated them as "almost gods" after GT1,2,3 then they got lazy after GT3. ;)
But if not, then let's look at GT5. I think we can all agree it took them "a little" too much time to do it. ;)
Unless it was on purpose so they potential consumer base grows enough. It could be the reason why we saw no GT7 at E3 2015. They could be in the third year of development of GT7 if they wanted. The game could be done by the end of 2016.
The "father of the series" obviously prefers having fun with his Ferrari on a real racing track than work 18h per day for the good of GT7. He probably was "a little" more motivated when they were creating GT1 or 2.

I am personally dying to see some info on GT7 which is being carefully guarded while in development in some top secret underground lab. I hope we see it in 2016 and I am sure it will set the bar graphically way too high for any other racers to try and compete.

Graphically youre right, it will be untouchable imo. Gameplay wise is a whole different question entirely but I think they will deliver. I really hope they do physics correctly.

It's funny, GI KNOWS the situation at hand, yet they're going to lie in the face of scenarios that involve the completion of the current iteration. AND they get away with it too, which makes it more giggle-worthy.

Although it would have been nice to see an announcement at E3, it may still have it's own separate announcement event later this year or at one of the other upcoming shows in Germany, Paris or Tokyo.

They get the engine notes to sound like they should. Then you bet i will get this game without hesitation. Or i can just be a fanboy and ignore the fact that the cars have sounded like vacuums since gt1. And yes i had a real surround sound system.

If it's not ready, then it's not ready! i rather deal with the wait then to see this game released with a bunch of issues like driveclub and project CARS did, them was just awful. It seems that the car sounds for GT7 is going to be just fine.

Gran Turismo 7 is not missing the opportunity. It is waiting for Forza Motorsport to come up to the starting point. FM is still on the 6th lap and soon GT7 versus FM7 ; the new race will start.

By the way; for the sake of traditional collaborating of Polyphony with car brands, They should work with Messi and CR7 Ronaldo to make their dream car designs for the video game. Yeah, I know I know, they are not car brands! Bummer :P

Liked Porject cars and it'll be interesting to see what will happen there. as for the release, who cares if they dont have games out that are buggy and rushed which far too many are theese days. get right, don't give me 15 gig patches etc rather than that.

It isn't missing anything, GT7 will come out when its good and ready and long time fans of the series and virtual racing fans in general will buy it day one as always. Sony had plenty to announce at E3 they didn't need this there but rest assured it will be announced when the time is right. You cant rush Kaz.

GT needs to come back, Its become a forgotten franchise, by the time GT is released Forza would have taken all the spotlight which it has been doing for quite some time now. They have a lot to live up to because at this rate, PS could be losing more racing fans.

Its a lot of wishful thinking. GT7 needs to outshine Forza by a mile to be considered worth the wait. FM5 best racer in 2013 (IGN's Best Racing game award), FH2 best racer in 2014 (86 metacritic), and FM6 is set to be the best racer of 2015. GT7 will be a good game but how much by? Forza is soaking in the fame and Turn 10 have good experience with the hardware of the X1 now, while Polyphony hasn't even made game for the PS4, GT7 might be bad, we don't know.

Gran Turismo 7 will eat forza up, its a no contest.
Every year a forza title and will become more and more irrelevant , wont attract new gamers and will be just oh well ...another forza with low sales.

They are made for different audiences, Forza is a good racing game but as Turn 10 has said it is not a sim, Gran Turismo is a sim.

And it's hilarious that you think it's been forgotten. GT6 is currently the lowest selling entry in the franchise; it would take the last two Forzas to match that, despite those being highly touted- by some- for the new console, and GT6 being released at the end of the PS3's tenure as primary console.

I gave up on gt when they starved gamers only to release a demo gt5 prologue, then released gt5 which was a great game but its career was awful. Then they released gt6 which essentially fixed gt5.

Three releases and only one was worth the price.
