PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Global Lifetime Sales – May 2015 Update

VGChartz Writes: "Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U in May 2015 we can see that the PlayStation 4 has continued to grow its lead over the Xbox One and Wii U.

The PlayStation 4 passed the 23 million mark this month and has sold 23.22 million units lifetime, the Xbox One has sold 12.84 million units, and the Wii U 9.73 million units.

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 23,217,798

Xbox One Total Sales: 12,835,320

Wii U Total Sales: 9,727,909"

Probably because it's VGchartz and everyone knows their figures are never accurate. I still wouldn't be surprised if it's true though. Whatever the case, it won't hurt the success of these game consoles. The Wii was millions ahead of the competition as well, yet the XBox 360 and PS3 still were very successful.

"Competition"it' s very subjective when talked about regarding Ninty. They're not competing with other market leads when they're not sure if a product is going to be successful. After it succeeds then acknowledge competitor? What kind of option select is that?
Nintendo claimed they were not directly competing in the market race with its peers. Fans all clamored behind those comments. Now that the Wii was a runaway success, now it was a competitor?.
Nintendo has a nice way of painting themselves in a positive light no matter what they do especially to Nintendo fans. One will always seem to "win" if your racing yourself.

PS has a extremely consistent rate of folks returning to buy PS consoles, XB also is starting to get that trend as XONE is also selling better then 360 currently. Sony is the most consistent at selling at a very high rate. 4 consoles all over 80 million each gen is a just a huge marvel. (don't know what PS3 is at currently)

Ps4 will sell 40 million before X1 or wiiu. Xbox announced 10 million shipped in November so it took 8 months to sell 2 million systems with heavy discounts & multiple games bundled in.

PS4 was at 18.5 million at the begginning of the year. The console managed to sell 4+ million so far this year. That's about half of what Wii U has sold in its entire 2.5 years on the market. So your damage controlling failed seeing how PS4 just reached the 22 million mark in May

Ps4 has sold around 25 million as of June 2015. Also neither system has peaked yet. With major games coming out this fall that are exclusive to next gen like Battlefront, Hitman, Fallout 4, and other exclusive games that will not be on PS3 / X360. They will both sell very well this fall / holiday season.

Xbox and ps3 sales have not been good though... so.. not that many gamers are on xbox 360. Just think that gamers bought new editions of xboxs and ps3 when they released. So ... some people owned 2-3 last gen.. the 80 million install base was sort of false.

lol warped outlook? There's no argument to be made for the Wii U. The only people who are blind to how badly its doin is Nintedo, and I guess you too. An entire year headstart, and it has the lowest sales, regardless of how close it may or may not be to second place. The fact is it's last, with a bleak looking future, to say the least. It's a shame to see the Wii U is under 10M. It's a great console, but with the lack of multiplat titles the value isn't there for most gamers (core, casual, & hardcore). You really have to like Nintendo it's worth every penny. If you only like a few titles then it many not be worth the purchase.

According to Sony, as of E3 2015, PS4 has sold over 24 million units. They said so during a Morpheus demo.

XBone numbers are so problematic, as they literally haven't said anything specific since their "almost 10 million shipped" announcement back in November. My guess is, the 10 million was shipped to sell over the course of the holidays, so it probably sold through those sometime in January. I'd put at closer to 2 million sales since. 12 - 12.5 millions seems like a fair number as of this moment.

I personally don't think they are problematic, they should be happy, they are selling more XONE's then 360's in the same time frame.

For them to shove it under the rug, not talk about it only makes it seem as if they are only concerned with being better then Sony vs being better then themselves last gen.

This bothers me as it only confirms that MS only wanted Market share ie if they can't beat Sony, they look like they don't even want to compete ,even if they are doing BETTER then themselves last gen.

Likely why we are seeing them now focus on PC and starting to stop creating XONE only titles, now its XONE and PC titles. That is a telling sign that they don't feel the need to no longer seek market share in the console space and they want ot make as much money on software even if it means XONE's selling less due to less exclusives.

ie Gears Ultimate, KI, Fable Legends and Sea Of Thieves are all coming to PC and MS stated they still have MORE to announce and confirm. Its really starting to sound like they are not doing XONE ONLY exclusives and more and they might have been seeking to control the market at one point.

To stop making exclusives and to start making multipat games is sorta showing they are shifting from focusing on software that sells XONEs, to just selling software period, even if it makes the XONE have less exclusives.

I was surprised to see all the XONE, PC games announced by them at E3, especially Sea Of Thieves and Gears Of War.

Being honest, MS has always had the Ricky Bobby mentality "if you're not first, you're last". Most extremely large companies do. They actually should be pretty happy to be in the position that they are in considering their problematic launch. IMO their goal, coming into the industry, was to simply grab as much as they could from an industry that was growing so rapidly at the time. It seems, now, that they see that it's not as simple as a quick cash grab. They have to actually provide SOMETHING for the industry. Competition is forcing them to...well...compete on a different level that doesn't involve spending their way to the top. Their push to make Xbox Live an entire ecosystem seems to be how they plan to keep the Xbox brand relevant. It will be interesting to see how the competition unfolds.

Agreed completely. Its why we are seeing games like ReCore, or Sea Of Thieves or Scalebound, its clear that in order for them to compete, they need to start offering new concepts regularly as suppose to the classic 4 Halo, 4 Gears, 4 Forza bs we normally see every gen by them.

In order to sell like Sony, do what Sony consistanty does better then any publisher ,always rotate your new IPs with teams.

Every gen, a select number of teams at Sony start working on new IPs that go on to be long term series.

ie Spyro, Ratchet, Resistance, Crash, Daxter, Uncharted, The Last Of Us.

Sly, InFamous and Sucker Punch is already working on a new series currently.

Killzone to Horizon. Its not enough to just make a new IP and forget about it years later, they must let one of their main teams actually do NEW IPS! Let that happen, I want to see 343 make a new series while giving Halo a break ie 2 Halos a gen vs 4. I want to see them start to shift focus on new series vs always nursing those same IPs over and over and over.

I'm sure 343 wants to make a new IP, look at Rare! Sea Of Thieves is likely a HUGE breath of fresh air for that team, let the creators create. I'm pretty sure someone doesn't just want ot make Halo and Gears for there whole lives, look at Guerrilla Games, look at Media Molecule, look at Sucker Punch, look at Naughty Dog.

Killzone is not their only goal in life ,LBP isn't, Sly isn't, Daxter isn't. Let the teams have some damn creative freedom and hand some of those IPs over to other devs.

Those are also numbers from May and its July so both would have different numbers now, not that anyone knows for sure because MS hasn't said anything since they announced they have shipped 10 million to retailers and never actually given sold to customer numbers
