Microsoft and EA had the most popular E3 conferences according to Twitch

More than 21 million viewers tuned in to Twitch earlier this month to check out E3. These are nearly double the number of last year's viewers. Twitch revealed these staggering statistics yesterday along with other insights. Twitch's coverage included live press conferences from Microsoft, Sony and other big companies that preceded the official start of the conference. With that out of the way, now we get to the most interesting part. So who do you think had the most popular press conference?

Twitch said events from Microsoft and EA attracted the most viewers at any single time. They beat out Sony, Bethesda, Square Enix and Ubisoft easily. While Twitch didn't provide specifics, they said that overall concurrent viewership peaked at 840,000 during these two events. Considering that Microsoft led mine share during E3, it's not surprising that they along with EA were the most popular.

I missed EA but I read it was pretty much the worse conference besides Nintendo's showing.

IndieMonth3221d ago (Edited 3221d ago )

The fact that at least second best, if not the best, conference is rated the same as the second worst (sorry Nintendo *snores*)... Might say something about how worthwhile this statistic means as far as validating much of anything.

Edit: Grr... Managing two accounts is not my forte

RocketScienceLvlStuf3220d ago

And Sony's conference was on past midnight all around Europe so no wonder there weren't as many watching.

We all know killed it though and had the best conference.

buddymagoo3220d ago

Let's be honest, it's mostly because Fifa has a huge following on twitch and still sells 13m+ units a year (crazy).

If not for the sports fans I'd expect any of the big three to be watched by more people

Docknoss3220d ago

Funny thing is MS only showed half their exclusives at E3. Gamescom will be the rest which that in its self is extrodenary.

donthate3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

MS/Xbox One subreddit also had a huge increase in subscribers and huge bump in sales on amazon right after E3 compared to competition.

This doesn't account for the people watching on YouTube, IGN, and on the console itself. So the effect is magnified.

See for yourself at:

https://www.reddit.com/r/xb...
https://www.reddit.com/r/ps...

Pay close attention to the subscriptions per day and notice that PS4 doubled, but MS went 4-5 times and that effect continued to have a bump out the month.

It will be interesting to see if there is a continued increase from this or is it short term.

pedrof933220d ago

Sony conference was at 3 am in Europe, while MS at 6 pm. So...

pinkcrocodile753220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

I wont get into which company had the best show as opinions seems to differ from post to post.

That said, I watched MS's E3 live as it was on at 6pm BST but the Sony show I watched a few days later on Youtube.

I suppose it's not really a relevant statistic. Sort of a non story.

TV on demand goes a long way to explaining the disparity. Just a thought

Genuine-User3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

Yep. Aside from Battlefront and Unravel, EA had a shi* show.

Microsoft had a good conference, they focused purely on games.

Point to note; Sony held a PlayStation theatre experience in America, and Canada I believe.
Plus, PlayStation's E3 live-stream started well past midnight in Europe.

Kingdomcome2473220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

Yeah, I imagine the number of people that watched either via theatres, or the live events app was rather sizeable. As always stats don't even begin to tell the entire story. Off topic: I've never trolled or been marked as such, and I've only been markd as being off topic/not a response twice. I've never been able to inrease my bubble count, though. I don't know where these bubbles came from, but I'll surely take them

poppinslops3220d ago

I'm pretty sure the extra bubbles are N4G's way of apolagising for the website's intermittent performance over the last few days... it looks like everyone has 5+ bubs on this article.

We should start taking bets on which of N4G's trolls will be the first to get demoted to 1bub... will it be Mikeslemonade or Aussiegamer?
Or will XiSasuke make a last-minute comeback to claim 'victory'?

Kingdomcome2473220d ago

@poppinslops- Ah. I feel cheap now. Lol. I didn't earn these bubbles. Thanks for urinating in my cereal.

OB1Biker3220d ago

I'm sure many did like me and watched Sony s conference on playstation blog or youtube rather than twitch

Aenea3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

EA was crap yes, I was bored out of my skull, I'm in Europe and had trouble staying awake!

MS had a nice conference, but they didn't focus purely on games, I like the HoloLens tech but I don't see it to be effective for Xbox gaming, PC yes, Xbox no and it was a rather large segment.

Sony on the other hand glanced briefly over Project Morpheus which I totally didn't expect, expected another snooze fest there and they had a 3 minute bit about PS Vue (as if non-US people are even remotely interested in that, PS Now isn't even yet in EU). The rest of the conference was all games.

As for viewers, like you said people watched in theatres, thru the Live Event app, but also on Ustream (not sure) probably too and the gazillion other gaming websites that put up their own streams.

LordMaim3220d ago

I watched Sony's conference through their Live Event Viewer on the PS4. All the others I watched through Youtube.

Dewitt3220d ago

@Aenea

They actually focused on content coming this year and spend so little time with the hardware stuff that the conference was completely wall to wall games.

Microsoft, Bethesda & Sony had solid conferences. Everyone else was so so....except for Nintendo's, which as a huge Nintendo fan, left me pretty disappointed.

Kingdomcome2473220d ago

I think that Square had a top notch conference too.

LordMaim3220d ago

The EA conference was pretty bland. I don't think these Twitch statistics are worth much, IMO.

JeffGUNZ3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

huh? They are not saying who had the BEST conference, just which conferences had to most viewers via twitch.

LordMaim3220d ago

They're equating viewers with popularity, per the title of the article. Therefore Twitch statistics aren't worth much.

Trekster_Gamer3220d ago

Spoken like a true blinded fanboy.

Microsoft's was awesome, games games games and not a glitch among them!

gangsta_red3220d ago

Yea, my apologies for being a huge blind fanboy.

Now where did I say anything bad about Microsoft?

maniacmayhem3220d ago

As a huge Nintendo fan myself I have been pretty disappointed as of late and their E3 was really bad.

pompombrum3220d ago

EA's conference was so bad, they felt it necessary to remind everyone at least three times that Battlefront was still to come.

LOL...EA

Are they serious

Just for that I don't think I can take this seriously. All EA did was "Sports, Sports and more sports......oh and the actual good games"

gangsta_red3221d ago

Sports games are pretty big.

And it says popular, not the best. I had to sit back and think about this as well.

Thatguy-3103221d ago (Edited 3221d ago )

I mean only because they were the most watched doesn't mean they were good. This is solely on viewers which doesnt say much

KarmaV123221d ago

They had Star Wars, probably the biggest entertainment franchise in history. Why is it so hard to believe they had a ton of people watching to see the actual game in action?

LexHazard793220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

Yes...they have stats. Lol

Edit...no way, I got bubbles!!!! Feel like that shrimp in Nemo. Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles....

Skate-AK3220d ago

Haha. Not the shrimp that says that though. My friend's kid loves Nemo so I have seen it over 25 times.

http://youtu.be/5NzPd-xW4YY

Paulino303220d ago

A faster way to get bubbles is to say positive things about Sony. Which isn't hard with all the the things their doing. But It's something I have noticed spending a lot of time on this website.

LexHazard793220d ago

@skate, lol, well i atleast got the movie part right.

Kalebninja3220d ago

Yeah I went and took a shower after they wouldn't stop with the sports. They had shown some really nice gameplay but that had ruined it for me. Have to keep in mind that they make a lot of money off those games so of course they have to give them a bit of spotlight.

PistolsAtDawn3220d ago

Well in their defense, people watching didn't know that till after they watched it....maybe they were hoping for a New Battlefield or stuff on Star Wars.

Joe9133220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

There is a few different things at play I wonder how many ways could you view the MS conference off the top of my head there is twitch and YouTube I viewed on YouTube but Sony have twitch, YouTube, Sony live viewer, and of course the movie theater which is how I viewed it so there is no way to tell just from twitch but Sony people can't view nothing but game streams on ps4 unless they used the browser so no one watching on ps4 viewed via twitch I bet.

OldDude3220d ago

Dude, give it up. Seriously. They both had a good show, be happy.

marlinfan103220d ago

Microsoft had spike tv, youtube, twitch, xbox website if I'm not mistaken, and the app on xbox.

MrDead3220d ago

As for the Sony one, isnt it understandable that there were certain parts of the world especially Europe asleep during their time based on the very early morning time on their conference

And 21 million viewers for the whole of E3 is actually not so good even if we take out casual console owners

loopygames3221d ago

I watched Sony's conference on youtube since I don't like the twitch video player. Also a good amount of people went to the PS E3 Theatre experience in US/Canada.

PistolsAtDawn3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

Less that 15,000 people went to the theater experience...which isn't a lot when we are talking millions. It was 75 theaters and even if all of them were large and filled to the brim, that's less than 15k

MasterCornholio3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

Well I watched it at 3:30 AM in Spain.

So I understand what you're saying.

I watched the conference via a link in PlayStation blog. I don't remember if it was twitch or YouTube.

Nosred3221d ago

I agree, it was better in the set as a whole. The MS was the best:

Several major AAA Games this year.
Forza, Halo, Tomb Raider, Gear Remake, Fable ...

Several major AAA games to the next.
Scalebound, Quantum Break, Recore, Sea of the Thieves ...

Backward compatibility
Xbox Elite control
New Dash Board
Indies
Price cut.

The Sony impressed in nostalgia and Hype.Horizon had, moreover was more multi games and for years to come.

Thatguy-3103221d ago (Edited 3221d ago )

Sacalebound and quantum break werent even shown and Microsoft had some multiplatform games aswell. Recore and sea of Thieves were nothing but pre-rendered trailers with no release date. You cant critize one company when Microsoft did the same. If im not mistaken Sony's titles were the most talked about and got anlot of coverage

Nosred3221d ago

Well it was the demo of the PS3 TLG ...
Shenmue and FF7 for 2016-17 not to mention healthful mults, and most talked not have to say better. The Sony may have impressed the Hype, apart from that few saved games, unlike MS did what he had to do the best show for the fans this is a fact. Not to mention that not needed Sacalebound and quantum break and Creackdown.

Mikefizzled3221d ago

Recore had a Spring 2016 release window and Sea of Thieves was captured real time.

Sony got the most noise by announcing games that played to nostalgia. Take FF7 and Shenmue out of the Sony conference and it wouldn't have got anywhere near the same publicity.

3220d ago
Lennoxb633220d ago

Recore was the one with the trailer. Sea of Thieves was all gameplay.

PistolsAtDawn3220d ago

Watch the Sea of Thieves video....then pay attention what it says in the very beginning. If you watched the video and wanted to get your facts straight it would have taken you literally 1 second to find the answer... how hard did you try?

mark_parch3220d ago

sea of thieves was gameplay

_-EDMIX-_3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

@Nos lolz, "hype" oh you mean the showed better games that where received well?

To hear folks stating Sea Of Thieves, BC LMFAO! Ports, free to play etc as a reason why someone won an event its just sad. Its just too funny to see that many can't take it that Sony not only won E3, they might have just set the bar for EVERY E3 going forward until someone tops them.

That is like me stating next year, Sony will win E3 when the show Killzone 3 remaster, PS3 BC, new expensive controller etc LMFAO! Yup, that sounds like a winning E3 to me budz, man the reaction videos will be INSANE when folks hear that we can play PS3's games on PS4, yup!!!!!! NEWS OF THE CENTURY FOLKS!

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I don't recall seeing much reaction videos from MS press event this crazy, hate all you want and downplay Sony's event all you want, but its very, very clear Sony not only won E3 this year, they set the bar for ALL E3's this year FORWARD.

Was it, FFVII, Last Guardian, Shenmue 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4 E3 good?

Yea bro Gears 4 trailer set the world on fire bro!

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

....500k

But FFVII, I don't know bro, not that exciting, no one really cares bro, proof you ask?

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Only 10 million views....

Last Guardian...meh

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

only 3 million views sooooo meh.

The biggest game at MS event was Halo 5 and its trailer is at around 4 million.....THE BIGGEST at MS's event is only slightly more viewed the The Last Guardian.

....

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

because people jumped like this for BC bud? For Sea Of Thieves bud?

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

SMFH, not even at half a million views...

But stand back guys....MS must have won.

Not only are MS fans citing features, ports, free to plays as reasons MS won lol, legit games that didn't even appear at E3, also helped them win apparently.

Even MADE UP GAMES! "Creackdown" What is that? New IP? lol

You know Sony delivered a event to end all events when folks are damn near claiming to be excited about limited BC for last gen games, a controller, a port, free to play etc lol

Things just get ultra sad when folks start making up entire new games like "Sacalebound ".

Face it, Sony covered all fronts, new blockbuster ips, mega announcements like FFVII being made, Shenmue 3 etc.

...not free to plays, not ports, not features...GAMES! I could have brought up Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls as both those games where announced to be being brought over to PS4, but no....they didn't win Sony's E3, not sure why some ports and free to play win MS's. Apparently, last gen games that are limited in count, ports and free to plays win you E3, not huge new IPs.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Sitting at 2 million views, how much was Sea Of Thieves? ReCore?

Dewitt3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

@EDMIX

So what you are saying is you are basing E3 on trailer views, seriously. Sony announced a kickstarter and a multiplat title as their huge announcements. On top of that, way to show no knowledge about MS upcoming games, you'll see at Gamescom when they show E3 part 2 how much MS still has to show.

Also, it wouldn't matter if PS brought back always online DRM and showed no games you still would have said they won.

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 3220d ago
Joe9133220d ago

I like e3 for surprise's only surprise at MS e3 was backward compatibility everything coming this year was pretty much known about there new games had no gameplay and no due dates.

Kingdomcome2473220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

You may not think much of them, but Rare Replay, Sea of Thieves, ReCore, and Ion were complete unknowns going into E3. I don't know why everyone keeps saying that Sea of Thieves wasn't gameplay? It did look quite good graphically, but it was 100% in game gameplay footage. Three of them are new IPs as well.

URtheWalrus3220d ago

I think the game preview was a surprise and I am really looking forward to finally playing Dayz.

NeverHeavyMan3220d ago

@ Mikefizzled: Yeah, let's take stuff out of the conference to make it work in our favor. The same could be said for Microsoft's show and backwards compatibility. Outside of that, I didn't hear much about it. Since it doesn't work like that, that bit is void.

_-EDMIX-_3220d ago

"Backward compatibility" lol, um sure bud.

Because folks were getting in feelings, watching trailers in the deep MILLIONS for BC, a controller, dash board etc lol.

Sony won because they announced on their stage a game that has been wanted by the JRPG fan base for well over a decade, a game like Shenmue 3 which has been asked for, for about 14 years, Horizon Zero Dawn, RIGS, Dreams, The Last Guardian annnnnnnnnnnd they won. ...oh yea Uncharted 4, sooo yea, sounds like they pretty much won E3 pretty clearly.

I'm sorry but you can try to call it "nostalgia" or um..."hype" but 11 million units isn't just mere hype or "nostalgia" and Shenmue 3's announcement is one that fans legit thought they would never see. I thought Yu would pass away and I would grow old, never knowing what could have been with that IP, it was literally not happening and.....yet its happening.

Call it what you want, but fans of 2 series got something we literally thought it would take another 5 years to get from FFVII and likely even NEVER from Shenmue 3.

"Several major AAA games to the next.
Scalebound, Quantum Break"

???? Not at E3 bud.

http://www.onlysp.com/quant...

Was at E3...

"Forza, Halo, Tomb Raider, Gear Remake, Fable"

Oh I see...bi-yearly Forza SHOCK, Halo 5 (best game at MS event easily), Gears remaster, I see a remaster being at E3 some how is game of show and wins by that factor, yet we don't hear many folk putting God Of War 3 on there? (maybe its because Horizon, Dreams, Uncharted 4 etc where at Sony's event and most don't need to add filler to claim they won, new ips, huge announcements of GAMES NOT FEATURES BUD)

and a free to play.

That is like me saying Sony showed Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, God Of War, free to play game, BC with PS3 and BROOOOOO THE MUST HAVE WON! lol. Just no, I don't call a feature, a controller, new UI, a port, free to play etc some how huge game of shows and something that made an event better then another.

Games...period. Something is wrong with folks are adding features, ports, free to plays and even games that were not at E3 to state "The MS was the best"

Sure bud.

StrayaKNT3220d ago

Lmaooooo you're using youtube views to determine which game is better? Ms won by a landslide dude sony had a timed remake and kickstarter game, both just started development and both put there because the rest of the conference was going to be mediocre at best. It's hilarious how you think one new ip (horizon) can even stand a chance against two new ip (recore and sea of thieves ") Anyways dude I'll be playing all these games within the next year while you wait two years to play two games lol enjoy dude oh and btw ign had a poll on what was the biggest announcement from e3 and yes you guessed it, it was backward compatibility :)

JMyers3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

We know what was there... most of us here saw it. This isn't list wars. Both conferences actually had the same number of games and exclusives shown. Not sure why you are weighing up the games like MS had more. It's a matter of preference. I prefer nostalgia and more interested in the New IPs showcased by both MS and Sony.

Most of those Indies are coming to the PS4. TR is also coming to PS4. Also Paris Games Week, TGS and PSX still to come. You can bet that more games will be announced here. At the latter 2 events MS is non existent. Sony will have more... guaranteed. We still havent heard from many studios and also there is RIME, and the various other games from last year's PSX. But who's counting... Oh wait you are.

Rookie_Monster3221d ago (Edited 3221d ago )

I re-watched the MS conference part when they announced BC for like 30 times. It is the single biggest announcement at E3 and not surprise the MS conference was the most popular. Well played team Spencer!

Kalebninja3220d ago

the biggest announcement at e3 was the ff7 remake, the trailer has 11 mil views right now while the bc reveal doesn't even have 80,000 views. its a cool feature for those that sold their 360s but its not a game changing feature, playstation has psnow and you don't even need a playstation to use it.

Rookie_Monster3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

@kalebninja,

The FF7 game is a single game, also on other platform (s), won't be out for a long time, and doesn't really affect console sales for a while unlike the announcement of BC that will and can affect those 80 million X360 owners buying decision right at this moment.

"playstation has psnow and you don't even need a playstation to use it."

That right there is exactly why the local BC of the XB1 is a megaton. Since there are other way to play old PS games besides on a PS4, it has no affect on hardware sales on the PS4. Those users are free to start fresh with whatever console they chooses.

For those 80 million X360 owners out there that still have their old X360 games, either in disc or digitally tied to their account, it is a great bait to get those users to migrate over to the Xb1. In contrast, for those 80 million PS3 owners that still have their old PS3 disc or a classic digital game like Journey and all their DLCs thay they bought for their PS3 games, they are essentially unplayable on a PS4 and they are free to start over on any of the new current systems.

It is no different than a user that is tied in to the Apple or Android ecosystem that already have and bought many apps for that platform. Their next phone or tablet purchase will most likely be on the same platform as their last due to investment.
You are seriously underestimating BC on these new consoles as it is the most requested features on both side.

StrayaKNT3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

Actually people voted it the biggest announcement of e3 dude bc is absolutely a billion times bigger than ff7 imo xbox one will soon have the biggest library of games

rainslacker3220d ago

@Aussie

Except Sony won the most awards at E3...mostly for Horizon though.

Most of the games MS showed aren't getting much attention, while a remake, two sequels(UC4, S3), and a new IP(Horizon) are taking up most of the press time. Heck, even the MS fans seem to be in Sony articles more than MS articles, so I fail to see how MS impressed you guys that much if you need to be in Sony articles(here is fair game though, I mean elsewhere).

About the only place I see BC mentioned is from individual commenters in "who won E3" articles where most people are actually saying sony for aforementioned games, and in the occassional "who won E3" article which tries desperately to downplay Sony's announcements.

Only place I saw BC being voted the biggest announcement was digitalSpy, and even they didn't say that they were listed in order of importance. Given how little press they give the announcement in their own articles, it would seem that they don't feel it's that important over Sony's own announcements which have many more articles.

Rookie_Monster3220d ago (Edited 3220d ago )

@rainslacker

" I fail to see how MS impressed you guys that much if you need to be in Sony articles(here is fair game though, I mean elsewhere). "

Where are you pulling that conclusion from? At least on N4g, the most replied article for the month of June (338 replies) pertains to the article about BC on XB1 at E3.

The entire Sony brigade was there commenting on that article and many known PS fans even offered their congrat, that you don't see everyday.

Guerrilla Games’ PS4 Exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn Gets Stunning 1080p Screenshots
http://n4g.com/news/1743167...

I looked through that entire comments of that article, and I sure can't find Aussiegamer1 or one any other known xbox fanatic commenting. It is just the usual PS fans hifiving over 1080p screenshots.

Unless you have other links to prove otherwise.

rainslacker3218d ago (Edited 3218d ago )

Most commented...yeah good indicator. Go to the main page. Look to the right of the window. PS4 exclusives occupy 5 of the top ten, all above Halo, which is the only MS exclusive on the list at number 9.

If you go to look at which is the most popular system right now, the PS4 is at number 1 with the Xbox at number 2, and the heat for the PS4 is just shy of 100,000 degrees.

So, is the "Entire Sony brigade" mean that the you aren't in every single PS4 article trying to downplay it, along with some others who who do the same thing?

I'm sure you don't need me to find a single example to try and prove you wrong. You know I can find it as readily as you found your example.

Kalebninja3218d ago

Xbox gamers are waaaaay too proud over backwards compatibility. wii u had it from the start and playstation has its own version which doesn't even require a console, but as soon as xbox arrives at the party its the best announcement ever. And if you didn't know most people keep their consoles when purchasing a new one and a lot more haven't even bought a newer console so stop acting like we cant just go and play our old games, our accounts are even connected and we keep our scores and trophies.

Microsoft Seemingly Closes Bethesda France

As part of its plans to cut 1,900 jobs, Microsoft has reportedly shut down operations at Bethesda France, letting go roughly 15 people

Yeah, they're also jobless.

(Citation from a week old article)

I think Microsoft and other game publishers are letting people go because they think ai will replace them. Doesn’t matter how much profit they make. They were always going to be let go.

PassNextquestion18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger16h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Mr Logic2h ago

What a stupid thing to say. The elites give 0 fucks what we say on an obscure website in the comments section.

Crows901h ago

You can always reach out and give them jobs at your company man. Don't wait

Profchaos18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto18h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos17h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long14h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator16h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple10111d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref11d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde11d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander197211d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville11d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff218310d ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos10d ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref11d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan11d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis00710d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander197211d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Anyone remember xblig which Microsoft removed their whole 360 indie section removing hundreds of games from people?

11d ago
11d ago
Zeref11d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde11d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander197211d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander197211d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier11d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto11d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff218310d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto10d ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts11d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts10d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic10d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Could Xbox Soon Become The Next Dreamcast?

Microsoft's future in the video game space is murky right now, so let's break it all down.

thegamer.com
ApocalypseShadow23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Not anytime soon. But they're on that path.

One thing not mentioned in the article is Microsoft's money bags. If Sega had Microsoft's money, they would have still been around as a hardware manufacturer. Xbox as a platform only survives because of the money bags. They can continue making consoles for the core and port to PC.

The multiplatform strategy is only the result of arrogance and misguided leadership that blew up in their face. They thought gamers would jump on Xbox in droves if they knew that many of their favorite games would be only on Xbox. But that's not happening at all. Sales didn't increase. They decreased. Why? Because the dumb asses thought giving away these expensively made games in a cheap service would also turn the tide.

Gamers on other platforms are willing to buy quality. They don't need to be handed nearly free games in a service that aren't even finished and sometimes average in their development. Gamers buy Nintendo games. They buy Sony games. Microsoft groomed their base to not buy games. Even the quality ones. It has always been their plan to go digital. But most gamers still like single player gaming. Still like physical releases.

Microsoft's problem has always been that they don't produce high quality games at the same output as Nintendo and Sony. Actually, they should be producing quite a lot more because they're worth over 2 TRILLION. How they don't have more is ridiculous and no excuse. Buying publishers to take away from competition only backfired. Because it still takes millions of dollars to continue to make those games from the publishers they snatched. Their only choice was to crawl back to their competitors to help sustain those developers because Nintendo and Sony platforms were the ones buying games.

Am I sorry for Microsoft? Hell no! They deserved last place for putting in the least effort. They deserved the fallout for buying up the industry and didn't make a single blip on the radar against their competitors where they now need those same gamers they took away games from to support them. Part of it may have been to cash in on their competition. But the result is the slow death of their platform. They may go 3rd party. They may keep making hardware. I don't give a shit about them to worry about it. I only give a shit about the destructive nature of their industry moves that only negatively affect gamers. They could sell and drop out of the industry and I wouldn't blink. Probably laugh. But not blink. They deserve whatever comes to them. At least Sega put in the effort when it came to games. They just had poor leadership. Microsoft has poor leadership and barely makes memorable games. That's a killer combination. And not in a good way.

Cacabunga23d ago

That would be an insult to Dreamcast.. it had a crazy line up of legendary critically acclaimed games.

Crows9023d ago

I was thinking the same. Dreamcast had incredible games in such a short amount of time. It was truly exceptional.

darthv7223d ago

...and yet all those great games were not enough to sway people from the looming release of the PS2 at the time. Sony just has that kind of brand loyalty.

Cacabunga23d ago

Darth

I do not agree.. Sony had even better games thanks to an unprecedented 3rd party support..
DC had amazing lineup but 90% were arcade games..

88322d ago

@darth:
And Sony showed off "The Emotion Engine" and their real time demos that made everyone think they would miss out on REAL next gen 128bit magic if they jumped in before PS2s polygon pushing monster (and early lack of anti-aliasing with a healthy heap of shimmer + DVD playback) stepped up. PS2 was a fantastic system though with amazing games.

That's not true. Just because Microsoft has the money doesn't mean Microsoft can allow xbox to bleed entire Microsoft money. It doesn't work like they. Also SEC will be watching and investor won't allow it. Lot of reasons why Microsoft can not continue even if they wanted to. SEC regulations is expensive.

fr0sty23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Exactly this... Microsoft is a publicly traded company, mostly owned by their shareholders (Approximately 59.24% of the company's stock is owned by Institutional Investors, 7.73% is owned by Insiders and 33.03% is owned by Public Companies and Individual Investors.). Their shareholders call the shots on the business decisions, and their shareholders want one thing and one thing only, for their stock price to go up. Losses do not make stock prices go up... so if the division continually posts losses on hardware, but shows profits on software and services (which has been the case with Xbox its entire lifespan, for over 20 years now), the shareholders are going to grow impatient and demand they stop making hardware and focus on the only thing that has ever made them money, software and services.

When Microsoft bought Blizzard and Activision for almost 100 billion, I knew that was the nail in the coffin for Xbox as a console... as the shareholders were going to expect a quick return on that investment, and when it didn't materialize, they were going to be out for blood... out to force Xbox to sell those games on as many consoles as possible, "and while you're at it, sell those first party exclusives that aren't selling well on other consoles as well... hell, just stop making consoles and sell games."

If there is another Xbox console generation, it will definitely be the last, but I doubt there even will be one at this point. I think the Xbox division planning on it just in case, but I don't think the project has been greenlit from Microsoft itself. The rumors that they have not yet even secured the chips needed from the chip fabrication facilities ties into this.

shinoff218323d ago

While I usually agree with you . Alot of what was said can just also be asked before any of that.

How long will the shareholders wait? It doesn't appear long at all

Babadook722d ago

I think I get your point. Like just because MS has money does not mean they are content to throw it away on a dying ecosystem. Xbox has to be profitable or “what’s the point?”

ifinitygamer23d ago

Money bags, yes, but are we ignoring that Xbox actually makes a profit on games and GamePass? Hardware is often a loss leader, and they're probably making profit 4 years into the life cycle, but games and services revenue have been very profitable while other parts of Microsoft's business is struggling. Say what you will about the quality of those games, of course, but this is kind of a reverse Dreamcast situation, where the console was dragging down the company and put it at risk of shuttering entirely. Killing that console saved the business and allowed it to continue to make games on multiple platforms. In this case, the service is very profitable, as are the games, and they're also double-dipping into Multiplatform to extend this further, while their hardware is just sort of what they believe to be the best for gamers and their own titles (whether that is the case or not...)

fr0sty23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

The issue is, they aren't selling enough hardware to make their exclusives profitable, and now that they've bought half the gaming publisher/dev industry, they have no choice but to go third party to make a profit... and that is making their shareholders take a real close look at their hardware division under the microscope... why keep making the hardware if the software is all that is making them money, and they continually, generation after generation come in dead last with hardware sales?

Look at a game like Spiderman 2... if it had been an Xbox exclusive, with the amount it cost to develop, it would have been a huge failure... simply not enough consoles out there to sell it on. They would have been lucky to break even.

ifinitygamer22d ago

@fr0sty agreed completely, which is why they're hedging by releasing other games to multiplatform, plus they have PC to make up for the difference in a lot of ways, which is why their games are not complete money pits. It brings up the question of whether or not those exclusives would drive sales of consoles, though. Let's say Spiderman 2 was an Xbox exclusive, it would certainly have pushed console sales, though who's to say how much is anyone's guess.

fr0sty22d ago

That's why you can't rely on just one exclusive, Sony has always delivered on a wide range of solid exclusives, even this generation (even if they haven't been strong on the first party exclusives, they've made up for it with third party). They don't rely on just one "system seller", they have a portfolio of them.

22d ago
JBlaze22622d ago

ApocalypseShadow To be honest Sony has more of a chance to go 3rd party because like you said Microsoft has money, Sony does not. Sony does not have games, Only games they have come from 3rd party. Sony has been losing money for years and you. Saying Microsoft has been putting the least effort just proves you have no idea what's been going on. All Sony has done is repeat and recycle, never innovating or doing something new. All Sony has is brand loyalty nothing else and it shows.

Not sure about that. It's been two decades and I still think about Power Stone, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Seaman and others, but I'm not sure I'll remember Xbox Series X/S games in a few years from now... Maybe I'll remember about the franchises that the Xbox brand spawned, but I don't believe that the Xbox Series lives up to the late Dreamcast or even to the Xbox name itself. I do have great memories about the 360 with Blue Dragon, Gears 2 and Lost Odyssey though

isarai23d ago

Nah, sega actually makes good games

Becuzisaid23d ago

No, Dreamcast was ahead of it's time and most still have very fond memories of it that had one. It also had some good games on it even in it's short lifespan. Xbox has none of these qualities.

Profchaos23d ago

I remember it coming out at the time in a really bad place they hit the market before the PS2 but it was during this transitional time when Sony was promoting the power of the PS2 and so many of the Dreamcast games were awesome but often third parties simply ported the PS1 version increased resolution and performance but rarely fully utilise the capabilities of the console.

I think in the end bad marketing done it in and like the GameCube so many people are fond of it now but at the time it was looked at in the lense of the day and it didn't stack up.

Personally I miss Sega in hardware they took risks that many companies won't

Becuzisaid23d ago

I never owned it, and got the PS2 right when it launched. But there were certain games it had that I was always jealous of that I didn't have access to - Sonic adventure, crazy taxi, power Stone, code Veronica, shenmue, skies of Arcadia. I always thought it was a really cool machine though. I've never heard a bad thing about it though from those that had it.

FinalFantasyFanatic23d ago

I only ever saw one Dreamcast, and that was one my friend owned, pity I never got to play it, I wonder what games he had for it?

It would be nice if some of those games got ported to modern systems.

Profchaos23d ago

Oh man sonic adventure on the Dreamcast made me so jealous as a huge sonic fan on the mega drive who also moved to PlayStation 2 I never got the chance to play it back in the day either. The Dreamcast in Australia where I am was always relegated to the smallest corner of EB Games it was kind of a strong first indicator that things were not going well at the time.
