Did Sony just kill the PS Vita?

GGG debates whether Sony's recent comments on the PS Vita being a "legacy" product mean its done for good or if there is still hope left.

Oh come on! Why is it that so many people want to see the damn thing dead? If they want to call it a legacy device, then so be it, as it stands right now the Vita has the potential to become the Sega Dreamcast of portable devices. That means we can expect another decade of support from localizers, indies, and eventually hobbyist!

It's that expectation for a constant stream of AAA titles. The Vita already has a great catalog of games, instead of waiting for the next copy and paste AAA franchise, people should have tried out the new franchises and genres that came to the system. The Vita has been a fantastic system to me, and has given me a chance to re-explore old and new genres.

Nobody "wants to see the damn thing dead", I personally thought the Vita was an amazing piece of hardware and was going to pick one up, then I realized it only came with a 1GB memory card and the ones with decent memory were sold separately for insane prices, so I figured I'd wait until Sony realized that and cut the price down to a reasonable offer, unfortunately they never did, on top of that it was completely abandoned by Western developers after a year and it became a niche handheld console for jrpg's, indie games and some home console ports, Sony never took enough risks with it like paying Rockstar to developer a GTA game for it which would've been a system seller and made the Vita an instant hit, after Sony stopped taking the Vita seriously so did the public, it's a shame really and I honestly mean that.

I just hope that if they ever make a successor to the vita, that they ditch the overpriced proprietary memory cards this time and go for SD/miniSD/microSD.

90$ for a 32GB (at launch, now that's what 64GB cost) was way too expensive especially when you could get SD cards to less than 1/3 of that price. The vita card also offered nothing over the SD cards. Same speed, same size and the vita filesystem could have been on a SD card. The only thing that was different was the actual physical shape, but this probably take 5 minutes for someone to come up with a USB reader for them.

Honestly the memory card prices are the reason I was waiting to get one but I just said forget it after a year or two of overpriced shit. Now there just isn't a reason to get a Vita and the prices are still insane on the memory cards too lol. I've played some games on the Vita and the performance for most of these ports is horrible like Minecraft and COD. There's just no reason to upgrade from my PSP.

Exactly. The problem with a lot of the indie games on the vita are that u can purchase them on your mobile device for dirt cheap without needing an extra $200 device. Without the triple a games there's nothing differentiating it

I really appreciate your post + bubble. It's puzzling to me too. Ever since I bought the Vita I have been playing it daily! Terraria, Muramasa, Dead Nation, Borderlands 2, Rayman Legends (best version side by side with the Wii U), Dragon's Crown, the telltale games (gives us a chance to re platinum Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us, the PS1 library and it goes on and on.

It reminds me of the Wii U in the sense that there are several great titles that just didn't sell. I think the perception of the Vita is what hurt it the most. But for those of us lucky enough to hold it in our hands--there's so much to appreciate. It's a great system. I wish Sony and others (especially western RPG makers) would support it more.

I use mine everyday. When I get out of work (around midnight), I turn my Vita off standby, and joyously consider whether or not to explore and grind out on Suikoden II, casually finish some missions in Front Mission 3, or delve back into Wild Arms. That's just a tenth of my PSOne games. Maybe I'll relive my childhood awesomeness by jumping into some Grim Fandango while I relax on the couch. What I'm trying to say here is that you should try playing some good games instead of using it only for internet and music. I love my Vita, even though right now there isn't much support.

It is a good move. Sony should have killed it years ago. With how people access mobile games, streaming big games moving to phones and streaming content to practically anything an expensive dedicated hardware makes no sense for consumers nor developers. I loved games like Gravity Rush and LBP Vita (latter being the best LBP to date) but as a product I can't see the appeal of it. I played the indie games from time to time but most of these games are going cross buy because the PS4 has done so well.

This type of gaming just doesn't have a bright future.

I used to think just like this, and I even wrote an article for a blog titled "3 reasons not to buy a PS Vita" (in portuguese).

Then, I ended up buying a Vita about 18 months later (I wrote the article on the launch window). What made me change my opinion so drastically? Well... I had collected a lot of PS Plus games from my PS3 days (just in case...) and suddenly I was looking into the possibility of buying a new console that had already 12-15 games ready for me! It ended up being a "why not?" scenario.

But then, magic happened. I ended up discovering A LOT of things that Sony didn't advertise, which put the console on a whole other level of entertainment. I used to think that there was no place anymore for a handheld in a world where gaming is dominated by mobile gaming and PC/consoles, but Vita has some nice use cases that you discover when you own one.

For instance, the ability to suspend gameplay at any point hitting the Power button and resume it weeks later, at the exact same point you left, instantly, with very little battery drain during the stand-by time. This is an outsanding achievement, massively underpromoted - this very feature itself made me change my gaming lifestyle. I switched from playing for long hours at a fixed place (living/bedding room, depending on the console whereabouts) and a fixed time, to playing more dinamically, alternating between long and short sessions, at different times.

They always say this is a console to play anywhere. But it really should be marketed as a console to play anytime. This could be a major selling point to a late 20s / early 30s demographic - gamers in heart who no longer have the free time they used to have on their teen years.

Couple this with one other "feature" that is also criminally underpromoted: Vita can play games from PSOne and PSP besides its native games. They are available digitally at very competitive prices, with very regular sales happening and putting all time classics like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid (PS One) or Patapon and Dissidia (PSP) bellow the $10 mark.

Some of these games can drive powerful nostalgic feelings to the beforementioned demographic group. You would impressed if you witnessed that most people that goes to the Vita reddit channel finding buying advice are NOT aware of these and other major features.

I understand your viewpoint, still. It's very hard for this type of gaming to survive in our current smartphone lifestyle. Nobody wants to carry an extra device - this is reducing all sorts of specialized devices (like DSLR cameras) to the niches. But one thing I can guarantee you: from a gamer perspective, it a joy being able to play some of your favourite games ever (and a few modern gems) anytime you want :)

After three years after launch, western support for the PSP dwindled. But what made the PSP great is that it received first party games and localized Japanese games. The PS Vita has little of both; almost no first party support, and games like Phantasy Star Nova, Gods Eater 2, Tales of Innocence, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Ys, and Legend of Heroes are still not confirmed to be coming to the west. You've got to wonder why they mishandled this when both the PSP and the PS Vita has the exact same problem (Expensive memory cards, lack of western 3rd party support after a few years, expensive hardware, etc).

You do need a memory card for games that needs data install.

Sony mishandled the PS Vita. There are a few things Sony could have done to save the PS Vita.
1. They could have released different colors and limited edition PS Vitas in America. The fact that they only ever released Black and White is completely stupid.
2. They could have cut the price of the memory cards. If the PS Vita truly is a legacy system, then why are you still charging 100 bucks for memory cards?
3. They could have advertised the games more on gaming sites and TV.
4. They should have gotten more big name 3rd party support. There should be no reason a handheld like the Vita doesn't have a NBA 2K game and only 1 Madden NFL game.
5. They could have released more themed bundles.

1. I also would like to have seen different colors here in Europe, some of them are beautiful editions. But this decisions are very financially driven - throughout their console history, Sony has released a lot of different models of its consoles on each of the 3 main regions. They probably have data on this, implying that in NA gamers buy a lot more black and white consoles. For example, in Europe we didn't even got the beautiful white edition you got in NA :)

2. Absolutely right on this one. I could understand the high price on the first two years - Vita was being sold close to a break-even level of cost of production / cost of sale and they tried to compensate with expensive (mandatory) memory cards. But at this point, it just denies extra sales. They should cut the prices agressively.

3. Yes, Vita's major problem was/still is its advertising. Did you know that Vita has near 1000 native titles released/in production? Plus hundreds of PSOne/PSP games available? It's legacy device in a good way or, as I like to call it, an evergreen device. Vita won't age like a TV console. Vita will always play your favorite classics and will always be home for creative independent ideas - its hardware is more than enough for this kind of gaming on the foreseeable future. Sony should advertise all the games you could play on Vita.

4. Well, they did attract the attention of 3rd parties, at least initially. The problem was the fact that they didn't get return on their investments, regarding AAA games. So you didn't see further games on the following years, or you saw them with little to no gameplay improvements year-to-year (like FIFA, legacy edition). You see a lot of 3rd party support from indies or big developers making small games - there's always a Vita version on the pipe for the next "big" indie game. That happens because that games get the developers return on their investments (much cheaper to develop, much easier to sell below the $15 mark).

5. I agree with you on this one. What pains me is that they could have made some very interesting bundles business-wise: how could they miss a Minecraft bundle just in fime for 2014's Xmas season?
And why do they still make some bundles with 4/8 GB cards included when by now most games are released digitally?

I really don't understand it. It's a great plataform, with a very interesting catalog. They just don't seem to know how to communicate this to gamers...

Mishandled is putting it mildly. Their lack of concrete strategy is what did the Vita in. I've posted these a couple of times already.

Aside from the obvious overpriced memory cards, with the bigger ones cost more than an actual game.

-They released the Vita with a western focus when the biggest handheld market is Japan.
-When the big western 3rd party support dried up, they turned the Vita into an indie platform.
-Now its a Japanese niche gaming platform (which I don't mind)

They also released the PSTV (or Vita TV) without any proper advertisement nor did they improve support for it. Not being able to play all Vita games on it was just bad.

Since nothing seems to be going right, they just couldn't help themselves but to give it more bad press. :/

Well, for all practical purposes, we could also consider the PS3 a "legacy" system, seeing as Sony's investment into the platform is gradually declining with the rise of the PS4. Does that mean that the PS3 overnight becomes a paper weight? Hell no, I still have a backlog of dozens of PS3 games that I still want to play or revisit again. My PS3 won't be going anywhere for a long time.

Same goes for the Vita. I have a collection of ~35 physical Vita games and a ton of digital games (mostly from PS+), many of which I have yet to complete, 100%, platinum, etc. If we can just continue to get a small trickle of 1st party JRPGs imported in the U.S. every so often, I'll be perfectly content. Not to mention, I tend to prefer 3rd party handheld games on the Vita over getting them for my 3DS, as they usually look sharper visually and I prefer Sony's more integrated experience from PSN (friends list, trophies, parties, cross-buy/cross-save where applicable, etc.).

To each their own. I know plenty of people/friends who are more than happy with the PS Vita's library of games. If you're not, then the system is not for you. Sorry it didn't turn out as you hoped it would, but it's still a badass little handheld to a lot of us. I find myself playing it roughly twice as much as I do my 3DS (not to hate on it, because it is also a very good handheld).

Yes some of these are on PS4/3 and in the Sony family, but it doesn't take from the fact you can play them on VITA anytime on the go including continuing your game from PS4 ect. In the last two or so years, Sony has commendably set the PS Vita up for a long life, massively overhauling its developer policies to welcome independent developers and supplying them with cheap and/or free development kits, which in turn has guaranteed the system a steady stream of quality downloadable titles for years to come.

Vita has great choice of games on store, and always some good deals. Great time to own Vita.

Not true. There's not a lot of PS Vita owners, but as the PlayStation boss said last year they not only use their Vitas 20+ hours a week, they also purchase a lot of games digitally.

It has found an odd, yet profitable niche market of hardcore gamers with a decent amount of cash to spend.

The Vita still has the potential to take off. But it's best left as a strong indie portable.

I have a backlog of indies because for months I've been playing other stuff (mainly Demon's Souls as I can't afford Bloodborne and Rainbow Moon) so for me whether it's "dead" or not I still have loads of unique and decent content to keep me going. Plus I still have to revisit Disgaea, Killzone, NFS, Soul Sacrifice and many others I've barely played due to huge backlogs on my other console. So for me it won't be dead for a good few years at least, and even then I'll still be using it for remote play for years to come. One of the most underrated, ahead of its time consoles/handheld ever.
