Project CARS on Wii U struggling to maintain consistent 720p, 30fps

Nintendo Insider writes:

We were suspicious when Project CARS on Wii U was repeatedly sidelined, and it would appear that fear was warranted.

In successive, honest posts on the Project CARS forum, studio head Ian Bell has revealed that Slightly Mad Studios are struggling to realise their vision for the motorsport racing simulator on Wii U.

Their hopes for a new console at E3 might be a little optimistic since Nintendo said they will talk about the NX in 2016

Nekroo913258d ago (Edited 3258d ago )

It's not a console because Iwata said its a new concept not a replacement.

Since Nintendo is known for developing new tech is probably an Hybrid we never seen before. They are also entering mobile gaming so it makes sense

iamnsuperman3258d ago

In the same way the DS line was never officially announced as a successor to the Gameboy line as it was seen as a "third pillar" for Nintendo. Same goes for this new system. Essentially it will be a new console (either home/handheld/both) but it will take over one if not both current Nintendo product lines

Concertoine3258d ago (Edited 3258d ago )

Im pretty sure thats PR talk. Nintendo can barely support 2 platforms nevermind 3

Eonjay3257d ago

Without any real idea of what the platform is: now is the time to make crazy predictions.

I predict it to be a phone... or a virtual platfom on PC and maybe other consoles.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan3257d ago

It might just be a new concept for Ninty, like a console with current-gen power and non-gimmicky/regular controller..boom..mind blown!

mikeslemonade3257d ago

I'd say that's PR speak. They are saying it's not a replacement so you will keep buying WiiUs and 3DS.

pcz3258d ago

this is why nintendo are losing commercially because they are not offering technology which is up to the industry standards. nintendo LIED when they said they would be making a 'next gen' system capable of handling the games modern gamers play. the wiiu is just the wii of this generation.

why would anyone want substandard version of a multiplatform game? i would not buy project cars on wiiu just out of principle. i want to buy a console knowing the games i play on it will be on par, or superior to its rival versions. i dont buy a console to play inferior ports.

nintendo really need to sort it out. if NX isnt the real deal then i think it will be their last console.

Clunkyd3258d ago

That's what happens when you're not running Looney Tunes graphics on the Wii U.

3257d ago
Strange_Evil3257d ago

^^^ They were just arrogant from the start. Thinking that people will gulp up the Wii U like they did with the Wii by seeing the new iPad like controller.

Overall, I am glad that the Wii U flopped (at least commercially). There is a reason why the PS4 is so streamlined and killing it. It is because Sony got burnt with the PS3 and they righted the wrongs.

How they could think that people will be okay with a PS3/360 power like console is beyond me. They have no clue of the industry and are becoming a joke with 3rd party developers treating it like garbage.

Bathyj3257d ago

Wii was just a Gamecube 1.5 as far a Hardware goes. I predicted very early last gen that Wii would struggle for power and be the first to market with a new console but that it would also be underpowered and struggle in the next gen. And here we are with what is essentially a Wii 1.5 with a tablet controller.

Nintendo need to actually put some effort into making a powerful console or forever be behind, meaning shoddy treatment for its fans as far as 3rd party games are concerned.

Nintendo console have long been machines to buy simply to play Nintendo games, and its pretty much all their fault. They hit lightening in a bottle with Wii's popularity and they were foolish to think lightening would strike in the same place twice. Now they are paying for it and theyre fans are paying for it too which is even more important.

But they are lucky they still have Handhelds and Amiibos to make them money which is a sad situation that the once mighty Nintendo relies on a Skylanders ripoff to stay relevant in the home console space.

I think Project Cars is struggling in general at this point. Not Nintendo's fault.

Khajiit863257d ago

I really hope they push for great hardware. Whats the point of a new console if its going to be a little more powerful? I like cheap consoles, but I would rather pay more and have better hardware.

N4g_null3257d ago

Hmmmmm why not lower the effects and shoot for at least the need for speed that the wiiu got. It's seems mad studios are shooting for the graphic guys rather than gamers. Oh well. Sucks for them.

DonkeyDoner3258d ago

cancelled it and delayed it to NX

zeal0us3258d ago

You got to be joking

There's no definite date for NX and by the time it comes out Nintendo fans and others will be enjoying some other game.

DonkeyDoner3258d ago

I know some of them have been waiting this game since KS but face it most people buy wii u for nintendo IP games only

Mega_Volnutt3258d ago (Edited 3258d ago )

You do realize that Nintendo won't even talk about the "NX" at e3 this year?? keep flying in your dreams.

Magicite3258d ago

by the time NX releases, we will have GT7 which will make Project Cars look outdated.

RiseofScorpio3257d ago

Yeah with its PS2 cars that are set to stay.

Khajiit863257d ago

Dont worry Project Cars on PS4 looks better than any NX game will lol. I doubt the NX will be much more powerful, if its even more powerful than a PS4.

MasterCornholio3258d ago

That doesn't sound very good.

:(

Lon3wolf3258d ago

No and wasn't this funded on KS by the Wii-U user base at first, not a good show by the devs imo. They knew the specs of the Wii-U back then so not sure why they are having issues now when they said they have already shown Wii-U footage?

MasterCornholio3258d ago (Edited 3258d ago )

Well yeah so they knew what they could do beforehand.

If they believed that the console wasnt powerful enough for the game they could have just done a kickstarter for the next gen versions and PC instead of wasting the money of the backers of the Wii U version.

That's just my opinion though. If your going to make a game for the Wii U at least do a good job with it.

Maybay3258d ago

It could be done, though they (like most developers nowadays) prefer a simpler way of developing software. PC-like gaming platforms (PS4/Xbox1) is what this industry always wanted.

DC7773258d ago

Because they are full of crap. They sold out to the other 2 after getting 1/2 their funding from Wii U owners. This game was supposed to be out a long time ago on Wii U. They pushed it aside to get a lot more sales on the other 2 consoles.

Just cancel it. Why add insult to injury at this point? You gave Wii U owners the shaft. We have Need for Speed which looks and plays awesome. You are too slow and too late, nobody is going to buy it now. Just go...

Vendredi3258d ago

Was this game really intended initially to be delivered for the Wii U through a Kickstarter campaign? Personally speaking, I would be very disappointed if I supported these people and got this back from them. That is, to say the least, very disrespectful.
Was the kickstarter focused initially for the Wii U, or was it since the beggining considered to all the different systems?

MasterCornholio3258d ago

@Ven

It was for multiple systems. However most of the funding came from Wii U owners.

roboshort3257d ago

My guess is that they are looking for an out because they don't think it will be worth the effort. If Xenoblade X can run great on the WiiU, this game should also be to run fine on the WiiU... not as good as the PS4, by any means, but still fine.

Lon3wolf3257d ago

Wasn't it for PC + Wii-U first with the other consoles as stretch goals?

NuggetsOfGod3258d ago

Just throw some gameworks in there and it will be fine lol

Why did EA Kill Project CARS?

This video explains why we think Electronic Arts didn't see a future in the sim racing title Project CARS and promptly cancelled the fourth instalment.

Jin_Sakai530d ago

After the last installment I’d say most hardcore fans left. It’s just not that good anymore so I can’t really blame EA this time.

masterfox530d ago

because it was always a project and it never got finished :D

ChubbyBlade528d ago

Every game is a project. Your joke doesn’t make sense

InUrFoxHole528d ago

It makes perfect sense. It's obviously a play on the title. Jesus christ you must be a blast at parties.

ApocalypseShadow529d ago (Edited 529d ago )

Ask Bullfrog or Black Box or Tiburon or Studio 33 or Criterion or any of the previously acquired developers who made racing games as competition, or as developers of EA games, then eventually dissolved into oblivion or reassigned. Just ask them. They'll tell you why.

ApocalypseShadow528d ago

Oh. I forgot. Even Code Masters were absorbed into Criterion. Another racing developer EA took over.

Every racing developer either absorbed by EA or eventually destroyed by them. They either kill competition or have them in the end make Need 4 Speed for them.

MadLad528d ago

EA only cancels projects for one reason.
They didn't see enough money in it.

Kombatologist528d ago (Edited 528d ago )

Not when it's because it didn't meet some crazy margin. It's like if something doesn't make EA a billion dollars on day one (I'm exaggerating that figure of course), they swiftly put it out to pasture.

SurgicalMenace528d ago (Edited 528d ago )

Much like if you're spending money on what's a bad investment for your desired goals, you'd do away with it, if you're wise. We should try to get away from thinking we know more about business than individuals that have been doing it for decades. Perhaps you could benefit from going into business instead of wasting all of your talents in comment sections. It's clear that you're the missing piece that EA's been looking for.

MadLad527d ago

I've made a good amount of money betting on underdog investments over the years.

EA sets unrealistic expectations of their more niche developers, yet continue to fund absolute blunders like DICE and the Battlefield series year after year.

dumahim528d ago

EA butted in and messed with the formula and act shocked when it doesn't work out.

Original Project CARS creator trying to re-hire EA team

Ian Bell, the founder of Slightly Mad Studios, is aiming to hire former Project CARS employees to work on his upcoming GTR Revival project.

Sgt_Slaughter532d ago

If it's just going to be another sim-cade that doesn't do either one correctly then no thanks.

Project CARS 2 was a step in the right direction but the physics still aren't where they should have been, so what did they do for PC3? Go completely arcade. That killed the franchise.

EA dropping Project CARS

From GI.biz: "EA is dropping Project CARS, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal.

The Slightly Mad Studios-developed series was launched in 2015, with EA confirming today that it has made the decision to "stop further development and investment" in the franchise.

The announcement was made internally and it's unclear at this stage to which extent staff could be affected. EA said that employees working on Project CARS will be moved into "suitable" roles "wherever [they] can.""

Terry_B534d ago

Typical for EA. They buy studios that created nice games..and are sooner or later destroying them and move the people to work on the old same 5+ EA series.

italiangamer534d ago

They will put the developers on the 1000th Need for Speed for the rest of their entire careers, just like Criterion.

SurgicalMenace534d ago

To be fair, it's not EAs fault it falls directly on the consumer. Everytime these companies choose to drop a series they're met with backlash though the gamers didn't support said series enough to justify its continuation. Attempting to paint every company as evil all because they're in it to succeed is ridiculous. They have to make money just like each of us typing in this section. If a job wasn't supporting you well you'd quit and find a new one, this is the same mentality concerning series.

TheColbertinator533d ago

@SurgicalMenace

No it is their fault. They don't listen to fans and burn the franchise to the ground by introducing elements that nobody wanted instead of increasing support for said respected franchises.

I order a steak, they make a steak. 1st sale
I order a steak again, they vomit on my steak and charge me more for it. No sale.

EA in a nutshell.

Tapani533d ago

@TheColbinator Well how do you think they make the billions then?

Their fans ARE buying their games. You are just not their focus group, and I can guarantee their customer insights team is more thorough and detailed in their reaearch than any N4G commentors’ opinion on the matter. Otherwise EA would not exist as a company, and they’d be bankrupt.

deleted534d ago

The one that still hurts the most though was Criterion w the Burnout series. Acquired Criterion's tech for their own existing IP, then shut em down. It's basically parasitic. I sure do miss Burnout's crash mode!

Hofstaderman533d ago

Sounds eerily similar to another large unnamed corporation hey. I believe some EA bigwigs shifted to that company back in the day, would explain the similarities.

rlow1533d ago

Must be talking about Sony

peppeaccardo534d ago

and instead they come out with that piece of shit of Need for Speed which looks like an Anna & Barbera cartoon. C'mon .... PC2 was my go to game for VR racing and the first one i played for tens of hours. i was so lookiing forward to PC4 after that failure of PC3 ... what a shame EA, they are bombing all the good games and stick to the garbage ones. EA when you think you have reached maximum of disappointment they top it off with style .... screw them!

SurgicalMenace534d ago

Need for Speed continues to sell so why would they get rid of what's producing what they need to maintain stability?

EazyC534d ago

What they did to this series was idiotic. The premise was great -- a sim/simcade game that GENUINELY got developed in line with its community. There is a huge gap in the market for this...I mean, PD hasn't listened to fans at all over the last year with regard to simple Gran Turismo 7 tweaks. Sim racing fans are screaming for a title where they actually give a shit about their users.

Project Cars 2 was genuinely on to something, it just needed some refinement. But instead they followed up by selling off to EA with a braindead GRID clone with Project Cars 3. Again...idiotic.

SurgicalMenace534d ago

Well since you're the authority on properly managing a million dollar company, why don't you just call them to let them know of your divine wisdom?

Hardcore sim racers are the ones who are competing acrossed the globe, no company in their right mind would focus on a forever moving casual market. They have to focus on those dedicated to supporting their efforts. Notice how you're speaking from a perspective of self opposed to the collective. Perhaps they sold out because they, like us, needed the money knowing that they could reinvest it into something new. PC was a decent racer but very few people mainlined it over GT or Forza.

EazyC533d ago

I'm not a divine authority but I notice a pattern where these huge corporations turn completely tone deaf of what the "average fan" wants.

vallencer533d ago

Hate to break it to you but project cars 3 was published by Bandai in 2020. EA didn't buy codemasters, which owned slightly mad studios, until 2021. Either way the sales were super poor for the game and it's not surprising EA would just drop the game. BUT it still sucks because it's one less sim racing game on the market. Especially because the first 2 were really good.

Tzuno534d ago

and focuses more on cartoon network games
