Let’s Be Honest, Last Gen Didn’t Start Out Great Either

A friendly reminder that last gen had some bad games at first too, but if that got better, then so can this one.

While some of these games are good, i still dont think they touch the last gen's launch year. Its funny how the PS3, a console accused of lacking decent games for years (anyone remember "no gaemz"?) still had a better launch year than any of the 8th gen consoles did.

You forgot the PS3 taking crap in general because "Its harder to program for". That overall features which where common in the PS2 wound up being removed. With some of it sold back as DLC.

There were ZERO features from the PS2 cut and sold as DLC on PS3. WTF are even talking about get off the drugs....Let me guess you still want to try and cry about BC, even though it was removed from the PS3 due to the emulation only working on about 60% of games if that, after removing it from the PS3s that actually had PS2 guts inside to bring down the price....Oh wait MS cut out emulated BC also, after claiming they wouldn't stop until 100% of original Xbox games were BC

Games. Game features. With the HD gaming gen - in general, that's Xbox 360 and PS3 - game features were removed from game series. Game modes where removed from sports games, FPS, even costume and color options were taken out of fighting games, only to be offered again as DLC.

Except those are on last gen. I was just talking about current gen games, same with the examples i gave for 7th gen. I will give it to you that this gen has more cross gen titles versus those that came out on both 7th and 6th gens, but that's not much of a bonus for me. I could play LBP 3, TLOU, and Dragon Age on PS3.

Bloodbourne is what finally sold me a PS4.

People will always remeber things diffently from what they were, this gen has maybe not been so impressive because we've seen better or similar, but younger guys are just experiencing this for the first time, so they take a bit too seriously, I took my ps2 and ps1 super serial.
Now I just game, have sex, make money (work), poop, get pissed at life and then be happy..... yhh you know the usual

thing is last gen felt like so much more of a leap . bigger graphics leap and much better online inetrgration than the consoles before .it felt like you were getting something cutting edge. this gen so far just feels like more of the same with less original ideas

bloodborne is great but is actually the only game I'd miss if I hadnt made the jump when ps4 released . the other games I have really enjoyed I could've happily played on my 360 or ps3

the other ps4 exclusives, infamous, driveclub and the order have been mediocre at best . rest of good stuff has been remakes of games I just played last gen so havent bothered .

I dont own a xbone but I see it much the same

going to grab the witcher 3 this weekend , hopefully another game like bloodborne that lives up to the current gen tag . and hopefully battlefront 3 really brings it to sell current gen to the slow adopters

Completely agree. Last gen I got the 360 first after the PS3 was delayed for the second time in Europe. The interface and online implementation was mind boggling. Then I loaded up my first game which happened to be GRAW and my head just completely melted!!! It really felt like a massive leap from my trusty PS2. There have been some great games released but I've yet to have a "holy sh*t" moment like I had, numerous times last gen.

Ye those were the best years for last gen to me with cod4 & 2, Gears 1, Oblivion, GRAW, Rainbow, ME, Saints 1, BF Modern Combat, Bioshock and Dragon Age Origins. Doesn't get much better than that for me.

What I'm left wondering is how did they screw up GeoW so badly after the first one, online I mean, I could game on that for hours small skirmish matches where awesome and being the last one left alive was intense especially after u just witnessed your friend get curb stomp.. But the sequels just never recaptured that magic for me..

God, I loved that game... Chip-Chip was such a good dog.

As for this gen, I've had no complaints... Titanfall, Mario Kart, Forza, Bayonetta and Sunset Overdrive have kept me happy, exclusive-wise.

If I owned a PS4, I'd probably be less-satisfied - Bloodborne's just not enough to justify my buying one... here's hoping Uncharted 4 lives up to the hype.

You gotta understand Devs working with new systems as easyer as they maybe they still need time to deveolpe for.
SDKs were sent out a Good Game takes average 2-3 plus years to create.. Sony has more first party studios we keep demanding Remakes not helping matters when you wanting New games at same time.

The same is happening with PS4, it'll pick up over time and you'll be getting good games every year.

Same can probably be said for the Xb1, just give both systems a min to gain a big libary of games.

I won't switch to the PS5 or XB2 until after 8 years.

That's the main thing people seem to forget and something that a couple have mentioned up above. PS3 gen started slow, but kept getting stronger and stronger, and just didn't didn't stop. Hell ps4's launch year, TLOU, GoW Ascension, Ni No Kuni, Sly Thieves in Time, Gran Turismo 6, Beyond 2 Souls, and whatever other game I may be forgetting launched out, so many devs just weren't fully committed to the ps4 yet. I imagine the same this gen, starting off slower but picking up immense steam as it goes along. That's just how Sony works. It seems this gen though, whether you like the titles or not, you're getting more early on than you did with the ps3. It always just takes patience with Sony.

I loved the 360 but mostly because I'm primarily a sports gamer...but Nba2k6, Nhl 2k6, Fight Night 3, and Tiger woods 06 were actually great. I'm not sure when Oblivion came out but that was the game that made me buy 360 as soon as I could. There were stinkers too like Madden, Kameo, and Perfect Dark. Also Dead Rising was a big deal when it first hit. People were just starting to buy HDTVs too so games were a big step up for people used to PS2 games.

Yup, it sure didn't. Red rings of death and $600 PS3s didn't do the seventh generation any favors. This generation has the tech, just not the games yet – just like 2008 didn't as much as 2009. I think 2016 is still indicative of better times to come, but this year we still got Bloodborne and The Witcher 3 while we're still waiting for Batman, Yoshi, Xenoblade, and Halo 5!

By 2007 there was Gears of War, Bioshock and COD4 available. Those games are classics. People who play games bitch more than anyone. There are amazing games available on next gen right now, with many more to come. There have never been more options for gamers yet they still cry.

Agreed. With Dying Light, Evolve, Zombie Army Trilogy, Bloodborne, The Order, Wolfenstein Old Blood, Project Cars, The Witcher 3, ESO, Batman Arkham Knight, F1 2015, Rainbow Six, SW BF and I know I'm missing a whole lot.

Has anyone not really factored just how many games are being released? Sooo no one is factoring many PC devs now making console games? ie Wasteland 2, Elite Dangerous coming to PS4 and XONE etc.

Didn't even mention smaller titles, Adrift, Wild, No Man Sky, Ori, Everyone Gone To Rapture, The Tomorrow Children, Hyper Light, Below, Transistor, Below etc.

We've had the greatest influx of games in the HISTORY of gaming, NO other time period have we EVER seen such a huge amount of quality games being released.

Both XONE and PS4 factually had the largest launches of their respective histories. To hear gamers complain like this is almost a joke. We have games getting announced seemly every day for PS4 and XONE.

The open format of publishing alone is giving us MORE games then ever before. I'm sorry but that is just undeniable. I have a huge list of PS4 games to still play and beat, that was not the same PS3's first year, not even slightly. This gen by default is already one of the strongest and will be the gen many publishers I PROMISE YOU will cite in terms of amazing launches.

MS next gen will make it even BETTER as they have adopted the open publishing format and next gen clearly, they will have a launch similar to PS4's and that will only add to the list of games being made for both.

I just can't complain.

I'm honestly a bit surprised with that sentiment. Within the first year + 1/4 of Xbox 360's launch, we'd already seen the technology + advancements in online capabilities do some wonderful things. The likes of Condemned: Criminal Origins, GRAW, Gears of War, Dead Rising, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion are just some of the early examples that really affected me.

Now? While I can't deny having a good time with some AAA/indie titles, it just seems to pale in comparison.

Graw needed about 50 patches to work without crashing and after a couple of delays. I loved it, eventually but that game gave me such trouble. Condemned I loved, scared the bejeezus out of me. Perfect Dark was amusing to play online but truly a ridiculous game.

I had a 360 at launch (late 05) and it wasn't until Rainbow Six and Gears of War dropped sometime in 2007 that I was really happy with it.

On Xbox One I've put a frankly obscene amount of time into Battlefield 4 and love it, dipping into other games now and then with lots of media usage. I'm very happy with the system.

I don't think the sheer awe of first playing Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Fallout 3 or GTA4 can be recreated, or if so then not easily. Those games blew my mind, I couldn't believe the scope and fidelity of the environments.

The XBO and PS4 had a bunch of great games from the start. The people that complain are people that also have a PC.

For reasons unknown they thought there would be a bunch of exclusive games so they would get some "value" out of their purchase.

If you were mainly a console gamer the launch was great and the selection now is really really good.
