Albeit I used to play CoD a ton in it's heyday, but I do agree. I think games like Portal are a great way for kids to figure puzzles out and what not. I think it's great that Minecraft is such a phenomenon because it's essentially what I would be doing with legos and allows creative freedom. CoD is basically a yearly sports game but instead it's an FPS with little substance. TLOU shouldn't be experienced until you're older to understand the plot and character development.

My son is 13... Pretty much, if it is rated above his age, he don't get to play. I have made some exceptions, but not many. A child's mentality is not developed enough for much of the content that is out there.

This whole "kids shouldnt be allowed to play this or that" is so irrelevant today, that its almost funny reading articles like this. I have 7 year old brother and he gets to play any game he wants and if he doesnt get to play it he will watch gameplay and you cant do anything about it. Well you can if you lock him basement. Today is not 10 years ago, kids can watch youtube themselves and find games there, they can download them on their own and even if you try to protect them from it, guess what, other kid in school brings in ipad or something else and everyone gets to play it or see it. Difference is kids do that now in first grade. We tried to keep him from these games but there is no chance. But i wouldnt say its bad thing, he can on his own make decision if he finds something disturbing and he just doesnt want to play it. This is old grandpa talk, today is different time and you dont get to protect child from any form of etertainment by just not buying it for him or not letting him watch on tv, just because your childhood worked liked that it doesnt mean it still works like that.

sure, if you think that blocking youtube and whole internet is the way to go. Kids have today access to so much more information than we had that unless you completely cut him off you cant stop him from accessing bad things anyway. But who knows if thats bad thing, perhaps kids will be that much smarter than we were. Maybe it will rob them of childhood earlier than it did us. But if you think that cutting children form internet will help, you might as well move to mountains to make sure your kid isnt exposed to anything bad. We never buy him games we dont think are appropriate for him. But how will you stop him from watching video of gtaV on youtube when you are not around. Then you come around and tell him he shouldnt watch it and after talking to him for few minutes you find out that every kid in school is either watching it or playing. Of course you can tell him to dont watch it, but if he actualy listens to you ( other option through tablet out of window ) he finds something else or some other place where to wathc it/play it. And this is only one scenario. Thats just the way it is. Of course you can play big brother as many poeple try to and when the option rises, you can implant chip into your kids head so you know where he is and what he is doing all the time. I mean its for his safety after all.

Spend time with your kid and see what they play and stuff, do not just buy it and leave them be. Check it out don't just look at the rating symbol amd description, actually go and play it for yourself. You would be surprised

This is a pretty tame list. Most M rated games are close to what these games already do. The fact that there's no inclusion of Manhunt, which is considered to be one of the most violent games around. It's clear that they choose the newest games they could think of. GTA V makes sense yeah, but there are other games with more violence.

Kids shouldn't be allowed to play M rated games unfortunately it's nearly unstoppable because parents would rather buy their kids GTA or COD as a digital babysitter than actually spend time and raise their children properly. I know I won't even think about playing an M rated game while my little one is awake and she won't be allowed to play one until she is ready to play one.

I've caught my daughter waking up super early in the morning to play (because she knows we'd catch her if she stayed up at night as opposed to while we're sleeping).

When I do become a parent, being a gamer will be advantageous since I'll already know about virtually any game my children express interest in. However, I'm also not naive enough to think I can 100% censor and/or restrict everything my kids come across. I own lots of M rated games, but I won't let them play most of those until they're at least of a reasonable age.

I won't rigidly follow the ESRB, but I won't need a rating to determine whether a game is good for my kids, and at what age I'll let them play it. I played some T rated games as a young kid and I think I turned out ok. I also realize that my kids can just as easily go over to a friend's house to play certain games, but at least I can do my part to restrict what they play under my roof.

Overall though, I didn't care for this article. It sounds like the beginning of it was cut off. Who is "he?" I know it's referring to the guy who was quoted, but his name wasn't mentioned at all before then. That's not the only problem with that article, by any stretch. Also, there are much worse games than most of the ones listed there. GTAV belongs on that list, but I wouldn't lose sleep if my kids came across most of those other games.
