Performance Analysis: Project Cars - PS4 and Xbox One frame-rates

Digital Foundry:
Taken purely as an assault course for PS4 and Xbox One consoles to run through, results in the solo mode are also intriguing. A 60fps lock is far from guaranteed when tweaking each settings yourself, but the freedom on offer is both impressive and welcomed for a console title. Project Cars is first and foremost a force to be reckoned with in the PC space, but the commitment to getting the most out of these console editions is apparent. Quite how the console duo compare to the PC's very best settings is something we intend to cover soon, and it stands to show how closely the team has optimised the game for each platform.

Is no one else bothered by the poorly implemented rain drops on the screen in the 3rd person mode. It totally ruins the immersion... Not sure how that passed QC.

Firebird3603270d ago

thats one of the graphical tweaks you can change in the options. you can turn that off completely.

Christopher3270d ago

Yeah, they're essentially animated decals that make no sense. IT makes sense if they are on the window when you're in that view, but annoying otherwise.

Very happy people have the choice to remove them. Wish more games did that. Like Lords of the Fallen and its unnecessary screen clutter.

u got owned3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

I guess right now both have their pros and cons.

PS4 version has clearly better frame rates and better shadows.

"The greater the downpour, the bigger the drop from 60fps, and neither gets off lightly once the switch happens mid-race. With no other driver in sight, a cruise around a soaked Brands Hatch circuit has the final bends run at 45fps on Xbox One, while PS4 takes the lower end of 50fps. And once the pit-stop and stands are in view, this number goes even lower still, where both drop to the 40-50fps range, while the cadence of tearing becomes increasingly more aggressive."

"PlayStation 4 retains a quality advantage in its rendering of shadows.

XBOX One version has better texture filtering and more refined Blur effect.

"Xbox One still retains a curious advantage in texture filtering, where static screens show PS4's roads blurring over at a closer proximity. Added to that we also see the same motion blur effect on PS4 as before, with moving objects producing an unusual banding behind them - while Xbox One's blur is more refined (UPDATE 6/5/15 8:16pm: Slightly Mad says that the PS4 artifact is an additional temporal component to its anti-aliasing).

GameNameFame3270d ago

Summary:

PS4 1080P better graphics and better performance.
XBox One 900P. Lower graphics and lower performance.

Wow. Gap is really growing. Next you know it will have to drop resolution even more to match graphics and performance settings.

So much for all those secret sauces.

krouse933270d ago

@Firebird360

That's good to know, I was considering skipping this if the "windshield" rain drops couldn't be disabled.

BeefCurtains3270d ago

Has anyone else ever noticed how the agrees to disagrees ratio seems to reflect the Ps4 to X1 sales? It's about 2:1 sales, and about 2:1 agrees to disagrees depending on the article for X1 or PS4...

Will be fun to see this game on a big screen in person, I bet it looks fantastic.

kraenk123270d ago

They already mentioned it's on the to do list. This and the missing pit stop animations will be added in a later patch. They didn't want to delay again.

Holy crap! This is awfull! lmao pc master race

jacksons983270d ago

To be fair I spent $400 on just my videocard for my PC. $399 for a PS4 is still a good deal

GMR_PR3270d ago

PS4:
+1080P
+More stable frame rate
-less AF
-Ghosting
+ Higher res shadows

Xbox One
-900P
-Less stable frame rate (especially when there are lots of alpha effects like in the rain)
+Better AF
+No Ghosting
-lower res shadows

snoopgg3270d ago

yeah this game is awful even on the pc with it master settings!!!

Trekster_Gamer3270d ago

Curious how PC elitist like throw Nazi terms like master race around.

Professor_K3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Game pr

"more stable frame rate"

lool, dumb thing runs below 40 fps, no where near the goal.

You failed to realize this is better on pc,could care less what it does better than the xbone

amazing how defensive you guys get when threatened...well who could blame ya

wegetsignalx3261d ago (Edited 3261d ago )

Project Cars performance on PS4 is fine, thank you. It runs at a solid 60 outside of rain/large amounts of cars, which slows down even high end PCs.

I can't help but be reminded how many many people were saying this was TEH BEZT GAM EVUH! Makes me laugh a lot, it really does. I'm never misled with fancy talk and over the top demos until I see something in its final stage. I suppose that what it does do well still is good for the game itself. It's nice to see an optimized PC version. Even if I'll never get to play it :/

3-4-53270d ago

uhhhh there is no sense of speed in this game at all.

Looks like the slowest racing game ever.

InTheZoneAC3270d ago

driving behind car in "sim" races is the dumbest thing anyone can do.

go in car, hood view, bumper view, or front of car view, but never go full behind the car...

Cueil3270d ago

not big on this comparison... in truth the best way to test the platforms would be only player's car running through the track since car visibility clearly has frame rate effect

Fro_xoxo3271d ago (Edited 3271d ago )

60fps in dry weather, dip to mid-thirties in heavy weather.

The frame rates fluctuate a lot.

The console versions are solid enough for their standards.

MasterCornholio3270d ago

But it appears that the PS4 is the better performer out of the two.

Anyways both versions seem pretty solid to me.

Eonjay3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Also, in the posted video, they did a 45 car solo race with whether effects to stress test it. Also, this game allows you to add visual effects like PC so in order to get a real idea, you need to look at the modest 20 car dry race and 45 car wet race with all effects.

Pogmathoin3270d ago

Where was it said the PS4 version is not better? It seems many have jumped here and started something that is not there, the rest of us did acknowledge the PS version is better looking.....

curtis923270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

so ps4 version is 1080p vs. 900p on xb1. And ps4 averages between 5-10 fps more than xb1. That's a KO for PS4. Here's hoping for XB1's sake that DX12 does all that fans are assuming it'll do.

Turn 10 has a task ahead of them with Forza 6. Day/Night cycles are expected now, as well as weather. And Forza 5 was 1080p. We've seen that day/night & weather aren't achievable on current hardware while still hitting 60fps (not even on ps4) so what does Turn 10 sacrifice? Resolution? Frame rate? Day/night cycles & weather? They can't have all 3 in Forza 6. And no matter what they sacrifice it will be a big negative.

Edit: I like how on this site you cannot be critical. Even on topic about an article that's ALL about performance differences between systems. It's like you have to be completely neutral at all times here and can't state obvious things because fanboys don't like hearing truths that might not be positive.

Fishy Fingers3270d ago

Did I click on a forza thread? You should write horoscopes with that foresight dude.

Dudebro903270d ago

Custom engine built for the Xbox one vs a multiplat game with an engine scalable down to Wii U.

Forza 6 will be fine hitting ask of those features.

n4rc3270d ago

day/night cycles are pretty pointless in a 5-10min race..

forza h2 was a nice mix imo..

dyret20003270d ago

The endurance races can last for hours, the longest endurance multiplayer races on forza 5 was 2.4 hours.

claudionmc3270d ago

I own a PS4 and I like comparisons, but come on... Is this a Forza thread? and you cannot compare third party games with exclusives... Just look at the graphics of the order 1886 or Ryse.

I'm pretty sure they can achieve all that you are saying without compromising a lot of textures... Even so, this is a Project: Cars performance analysis.

LexHazard793270d ago

Maybe they use the Forza Horizon engine and build off that. Tho I think Forza 6 might be a DX12 game, not sure.

mcstorm3270d ago

The horizon 2 engine is the same one that was used in Forza 5.

I am expecting night and day races in Forza 6 but I have a feeling we wont see rain this time round.

As for project cars I am looking forward to getting this game as I think a new some on the market is very welcome this time round.

2 cents3270d ago

GT6 has day night cycle and weather changes and thats on PS3, 60fps 1080p, so it is possible. Sure it had other flaws but it can be done.

KiwiViper853270d ago

FH2 looked amazing @1080p/30, with day/night and heavy weather effects... so maybe they might sacrifice the open world.. oh shit...

NatureOfLogic_3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Don't forget about cardboard crowds and less cars.

KiwiViper853270d ago

Your thinking about FM5...

FH2 had a dance party going on in the background + traffic.

BeefCurtains3270d ago

A KO for PS4? Did you even read the article? It's clear that everyone stating its a KO for Ps4 either didn't read the article, or didn't read past the FIRST TEST. Because as the game become more intense with more cars and weather, there was no difference in FPS.

Anyways, PS4 does have the higher resolution, can't argue that. And no one can see the difference between an unstable and fluctuating 45-50 FPS between two systems, and whether you can see the difference in the resolutions or not, it is a "win" for Ps4. Nothing's changed, don't think it's going to this generation.

AndrewLB3270d ago

Correct. Increasing car count and all the AI processing behind each one of them is a matter of CPU power. Project Cars has clearly shown that the CPU is the bottleneck in huge races. If the PS4 had a more powerful CPU, the FPS gap would be about the same as it were during races with fewer cars.

Rhythmattic3270d ago

A LB..

Riight..... some ninja trolling there......

Stop.... Just Stop.

wegetsignalx3261d ago

PS4 has a higher average framerate outside of the most taxing stress test (rain + max cars), which is an uncommon scenario for most players.

A 5-10 higher avg framerate, higher resolution, better shadow quality, etc. is all noticeable to anyone paying attention.

What's interesting is that both consoles CPUs bottlenecked at around the same framerate (35) in the max stress test, indicating CPU performance is about the same instead of an advantage for either one.

3270d ago
WilDRangeRfc3270d ago

Forza 6 will be 900p 60fps with day/night cycles and weather,it will look beautiful you heard it here first

BallsEye3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Did you even see the comparison? seems PS4 actually have half of the framerate and interpolates two frames to create one extra between them, thus weird ghosting.

http://i.imgur.com/74WkKPo....
http://i.imgur.com/EtKj2dS....

Similar thing they did with KZ MP. This is just awful, extremele ghosting. How is that any good? That together with lack of AF and AA that XO has makes for an awful image quality for the sake of 1080p

wegetsignalx3261d ago (Edited 3261d ago )

This is completely wrong. The motion blur effect has nothing to do with the actual framerate, which is consistently 5-10 FPS higher in most scenarios.

PS4 has equal quality AA and AO according to the Project Cars developers. You're wrong again.

The motion blur effect also has nothing to do with Killzone Shadowfall which interpolates frames. Everything you posted is completely wrong.

spicelicka3270d ago

Hey don't worry man, you can watch me play Forza 6 while you analyze the frame rate and resolution! I got you bro!

so basically Ps4s version performs better. as expected.

Letthewookiewin3270d ago

The truth hurts sometimes. Hence the disagrees.

Izzy4083270d ago

I guess that's why positive xbox comments always get a ton of disagrees.

SpinalRemains1383270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

One can acknowledge the PS4 is better, while disagreeing with the presumption that it was going to be.

Not everyone is a fan boy.

PS4 performs better in both graphical and fps departments.

Why did EA Kill Project CARS?

This video explains why we think Electronic Arts didn't see a future in the sim racing title Project CARS and promptly cancelled the fourth instalment.

Jin_Sakai524d ago

After the last installment I’d say most hardcore fans left. It’s just not that good anymore so I can’t really blame EA this time.

masterfox524d ago

because it was always a project and it never got finished :D

ChubbyBlade522d ago

Every game is a project. Your joke doesn’t make sense

InUrFoxHole522d ago

It makes perfect sense. It's obviously a play on the title. Jesus christ you must be a blast at parties.

ApocalypseShadow523d ago (Edited 523d ago )

Ask Bullfrog or Black Box or Tiburon or Studio 33 or Criterion or any of the previously acquired developers who made racing games as competition, or as developers of EA games, then eventually dissolved into oblivion or reassigned. Just ask them. They'll tell you why.

ApocalypseShadow522d ago

Oh. I forgot. Even Code Masters were absorbed into Criterion. Another racing developer EA took over.

Every racing developer either absorbed by EA or eventually destroyed by them. They either kill competition or have them in the end make Need 4 Speed for them.

MadLad522d ago

EA only cancels projects for one reason.
They didn't see enough money in it.

Kombatologist522d ago (Edited 522d ago )

Not when it's because it didn't meet some crazy margin. It's like if something doesn't make EA a billion dollars on day one (I'm exaggerating that figure of course), they swiftly put it out to pasture.

SurgicalMenace522d ago (Edited 522d ago )

Much like if you're spending money on what's a bad investment for your desired goals, you'd do away with it, if you're wise. We should try to get away from thinking we know more about business than individuals that have been doing it for decades. Perhaps you could benefit from going into business instead of wasting all of your talents in comment sections. It's clear that you're the missing piece that EA's been looking for.

MadLad521d ago

I've made a good amount of money betting on underdog investments over the years.

EA sets unrealistic expectations of their more niche developers, yet continue to fund absolute blunders like DICE and the Battlefield series year after year.

dumahim522d ago

EA butted in and messed with the formula and act shocked when it doesn't work out.

Original Project CARS creator trying to re-hire EA team

Ian Bell, the founder of Slightly Mad Studios, is aiming to hire former Project CARS employees to work on his upcoming GTR Revival project.

Sgt_Slaughter526d ago

If it's just going to be another sim-cade that doesn't do either one correctly then no thanks.

Project CARS 2 was a step in the right direction but the physics still aren't where they should have been, so what did they do for PC3? Go completely arcade. That killed the franchise.

EA dropping Project CARS

From GI.biz: "EA is dropping Project CARS, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal.

The Slightly Mad Studios-developed series was launched in 2015, with EA confirming today that it has made the decision to "stop further development and investment" in the franchise.

The announcement was made internally and it's unclear at this stage to which extent staff could be affected. EA said that employees working on Project CARS will be moved into "suitable" roles "wherever [they] can.""

Terry_B527d ago

Typical for EA. They buy studios that created nice games..and are sooner or later destroying them and move the people to work on the old same 5+ EA series.

italiangamer527d ago

They will put the developers on the 1000th Need for Speed for the rest of their entire careers, just like Criterion.

SurgicalMenace527d ago

To be fair, it's not EAs fault it falls directly on the consumer. Everytime these companies choose to drop a series they're met with backlash though the gamers didn't support said series enough to justify its continuation. Attempting to paint every company as evil all because they're in it to succeed is ridiculous. They have to make money just like each of us typing in this section. If a job wasn't supporting you well you'd quit and find a new one, this is the same mentality concerning series.

TheColbertinator527d ago

@SurgicalMenace

No it is their fault. They don't listen to fans and burn the franchise to the ground by introducing elements that nobody wanted instead of increasing support for said respected franchises.

I order a steak, they make a steak. 1st sale
I order a steak again, they vomit on my steak and charge me more for it. No sale.

EA in a nutshell.

Tapani526d ago

@TheColbinator Well how do you think they make the billions then?

Their fans ARE buying their games. You are just not their focus group, and I can guarantee their customer insights team is more thorough and detailed in their reaearch than any N4G commentors’ opinion on the matter. Otherwise EA would not exist as a company, and they’d be bankrupt.

deleted527d ago

The one that still hurts the most though was Criterion w the Burnout series. Acquired Criterion's tech for their own existing IP, then shut em down. It's basically parasitic. I sure do miss Burnout's crash mode!

Hofstaderman527d ago

Sounds eerily similar to another large unnamed corporation hey. I believe some EA bigwigs shifted to that company back in the day, would explain the similarities.

rlow1526d ago

Must be talking about Sony

peppeaccardo527d ago

and instead they come out with that piece of shit of Need for Speed which looks like an Anna & Barbera cartoon. C'mon .... PC2 was my go to game for VR racing and the first one i played for tens of hours. i was so lookiing forward to PC4 after that failure of PC3 ... what a shame EA, they are bombing all the good games and stick to the garbage ones. EA when you think you have reached maximum of disappointment they top it off with style .... screw them!

SurgicalMenace527d ago

Need for Speed continues to sell so why would they get rid of what's producing what they need to maintain stability?

EazyC527d ago

What they did to this series was idiotic. The premise was great -- a sim/simcade game that GENUINELY got developed in line with its community. There is a huge gap in the market for this...I mean, PD hasn't listened to fans at all over the last year with regard to simple Gran Turismo 7 tweaks. Sim racing fans are screaming for a title where they actually give a shit about their users.

Project Cars 2 was genuinely on to something, it just needed some refinement. But instead they followed up by selling off to EA with a braindead GRID clone with Project Cars 3. Again...idiotic.

SurgicalMenace527d ago

Well since you're the authority on properly managing a million dollar company, why don't you just call them to let them know of your divine wisdom?

Hardcore sim racers are the ones who are competing acrossed the globe, no company in their right mind would focus on a forever moving casual market. They have to focus on those dedicated to supporting their efforts. Notice how you're speaking from a perspective of self opposed to the collective. Perhaps they sold out because they, like us, needed the money knowing that they could reinvest it into something new. PC was a decent racer but very few people mainlined it over GT or Forza.

EazyC527d ago

I'm not a divine authority but I notice a pattern where these huge corporations turn completely tone deaf of what the "average fan" wants.

vallencer527d ago

Hate to break it to you but project cars 3 was published by Bandai in 2020. EA didn't buy codemasters, which owned slightly mad studios, until 2021. Either way the sales were super poor for the game and it's not surprising EA would just drop the game. BUT it still sucks because it's one less sim racing game on the market. Especially because the first 2 were really good.

Tzuno527d ago

and focuses more on cartoon network games
