Amiibo Prices Double, Are They Even Worth It?

If this meant Link in Mario Party or Samus in Mario Galaxy 3 then I would think the Amiibo's ability to make all Nintendo game universes blend is phenomenal or integrate them with a full blown Wii U console Pokémon game but I really don't see the point in these subpar quality toys. Nintendo could have a goldmine but they are missing the potential entirely.

It's like every other collectible fad. It's popular for a year or so, then it dies out, and it's pretty much worthless. These things aren't even rare enough that in 10-20 years they'll be worth butt loads of money because half the people are buying them with the intent to profit off them one day....or today, so they won't even be that hard to find in the future. Of course they'll slap the "Rare" title up when selling it...along with the other 30-40 people also selling the same item at any given time.

It's really a shame though. As a collector, I would love to have a complete set for my collection. But I'm not going to go to great lengths or efforts to try and get a complete set, or even a few since it'll aggravate my OCD, because it's just not worth it to me, and Nintendo has taken something collectors would absolutely love, and made it into a feeding frenzy to try and find them...which isn't something collectors love. It's one thing to have a great find once in a while, it's quite another to be unable to get the things you want for your collection due to the manufacturers own marketing strategy...which is the only reason these things are hard to find to begin with. I really wish their "supply shortage" tactic would stop working for them.

F*ck these things! I'll admit when they first came out I thought they were cool & loved the concept of them! That is until you figure out it's impossible to find the ones you want! Then there's the fact you see adults line up for these things hours before release & even fight over there toys & can't forget the guys that try to sell them for triple the price. Disgusting! People need to wake up, three ntn special about these things!

There are 3 amiibos that I wanted, to actually USE them in the game!

Samus was easy to find. I still haven't found a damn Metaknight despite over a dozen trips to Best Buy. And I doubt I'll give 2 sh**s about trying to find Charizard when its released, because I already know what's going to happen with him. I'm tired of these things and I'm not even collecting them.

I love the Amiibos and all the benefits they've given me across various games, but that price hike is uncalled for.
At $12 they were worthwhile because it didn't take long for their benefits to outweigh their price.

Actually the in the uk prices for gaming stuff tend to be close to a 1 to 1 conversion (as opposed to being adjusted for actual conversion rates) with the us. So over here they're worth £15 normally which would be $23. Our games tend to be around £50 which is $75 and our consoles tend to be priced the same as the us but in pounds instead of dollars. So a console that costs the us $300 usually costs us £300 (which converts to $450). It's shit but at least we're not australia...

They're figurines with NFC chips in them.
Their function changes depending on the game they are used on.

For example, in Super Smash Bros, a Link Amiibo will activate a customizable AI training partner that you can gear up to make them stronger, and unlike normal CPU's, they learn and change how they fight over time, even after getting to their max, level 50. (normal NPC's only go as high as lvl 9, and don't learn anything new.)

While in Hyrule Warriors, that same Link Amiibo will unlock a new weapon with the first use, and will gift new random weapons once per day with each use after that.

I could go on, but the general gist is that it's not just a pretty figure.

There are only a few amiibos that I want, but because of the extremely low quantities, the amount of effort required to beat out scalpers/other consumers, and my last resort being to pay 2x or 3x for the amiibo I want completely killed it for me. I really wanted Rosalina, Marth, and Lucina but guess what? Nintendo only made 100 of them or something! If I want one of them now, it will cost about $40~90. For that same price I can get a Samus or Link figure that poses. I can buy a game or two.

I liked them because it was a nice set of figures at a low cost. I never had anything nintendo related aside from the games/console. I like having them on my shelf.

But yeah, Amiibos would be great if it wasn't such a pain in the butt to get the ones people want. There are a billion marios and bowsers out there, but only 100 lucinas and other characters people like? That's bullcrap. Worse of all nintendo plans on releasing amiibo cards! So instead of a marth figure, you can get the marth card....

That's a crazy price! If that really does translate to $40, that would mean I got a three-pack of Amiibo for cheaper than one in the UK. I have two for Smash and I pre-ordered the Splatoon ones (because they look really cool and I love Splatoon), but I think that'll be all for me. Finding Amiibo is too stressful.
