Does the PS4 Really Need Big Holiday Exclusives?

Holidays for PlayStation is all about 3rd party games ever since the original PSX. It may sound weird but 3rd party is PlayStation's priority over 1st party. This has always been the PlayStation mandate.
When will gamers realize this?

I like how everyone continues to use this "they have exclusives coming out all year unlike..." what did they have last christmas? Drive club Vs Halo MCC, Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2. What is really happening is Sony's schedule got messed up by the Order being delayed. The Order should have come out last fall which would mean they were only gonna have Bloodborne as their AAA title for the first half of the year. And imagine if Drivelcub had made its original release in 2013...that would mean they could have had nothing christmas 2014!

That said it would have been nice for something like Quantum Break to come out around now on xbox but that looks to be something they're going to address in 2016 with QB, Crackdown and Scalebound which should launch first half of next year.

Looks like two different approaches. MS seems to want to launch games when more customers are out buying consoles at christmas but going up agains the annual releases like COD, Assassins, Fifa. While Sony seem to let those big names sell then throughout the rest of the year pepper in the odd game.

depends on what we mean by "NEED" ps4 is selling great without them and probaly will continue too sell great . that doesn't mean ms won't tighten the gap in the US and UK if they don't , but both are going to be healthy gaming ecosystems , so it doesn't really matter to sony . people forget that these player bases can only grow so fast based on production , so having too much demand really doesn't make them anymore money .

Yeah, what drew me to the PS3 was the exclusives and so far the PS4 has been disappointing except for Bloodborne. Last holiday season had nothing of worth and now that Uncharted 4 has been pushed back it looks like another year with a dry holiday lineup. Sure you can name games like Until Dawn and Tomorrow Children I guess, but they don't exactly look promising. The wait for Uncharted 4 is gonna be painful, and I hope Sony start funding more good exclusives in the future rather than wasting cash on rubbish like The Order. I'm really hoping they're commissioning another game like Bloodborne from From Software.

1. Release an Uncharted Collection that includes a demo and a beta access to UC4.

2. Release UC4 in Feb or March.

Not really. Sony outselling MS the gen prior, last gen and now this gen sorta shows that the whole holiday exclusives thing is a bit of an exaggeration. Gamers play games all year round, not just for 3 months out of the year.

I'm sorry but Sony starting to release games in spring a couple years ago was one of the best moves done in gaming. Do you know how many were doubting Motorstorm,Heavy Rain and God Of War III selling based on releasing in spring?

Yet...they did huge millions and showed that indeed, a spring release is something gamers are ok with. Sony lets 3rd parties shine during the fall, then during the spring releases many titles during what used to be seen as droughts years prior.

Sony has proven time and time again that a library of games sells systems and not just 1 game during the fall. Consider Sony doesn't have a Halo nor Mario type IP...

The closet thing might be GT and even GT isn't just releasing 4 titles a gen or anything lol. I'm fine with PS not having a huge fall game, it doesn't really need one.

Very few of those appeal to the casual gamers. If anything is going to REALLY help Sony this year it'll be marketing Battlefront and Black Ops 3 like they are exclusives. I knew several casual players who bought a PS4 because they thought Watch Dogs and Destiny as they thought they were exclusives.

Sony have been more consistent in terms of releasing exclusives. .. This shouldn't even be questioned. Big exclusives do matter but they would matter more if there weren't other exclusives to choose from during the year or any other given period. Having the bare minimum releases for the majority of the year then rereleasing a glut of games in the holiday season can only fool people for so long.

Sunset Overdrive, Halo MCC, and Forza Horizon 2 from last year. That's because besides Bloodborne, PS4 has very little for it to write home about. The Order 1886 is one forgettable experience with the graphics doing most of the work in compensating for the most basic of gameplay I've ever seen in a shooter in a long time. Sony dropped the ball on DriveClub, no doubt about that one. InFamous SS has the most divided reception of the series and I've yet to try it for myself. Knack...yeah, don't want it. Killzone is arguably the weakest of the franchise since the first game on PS2, but it's an okay game in its own right, just poor Killzone fan service to say the least.

TLOU: Remaster launching after only a year of the original version is quite strange and screams of instant cash grab, but to be fair, it's a great choice for non-PS3 gamers, double dippers, and the most die-hard of Sony fans.

Right? It's funny when it's just a PS vs XB debate exclusives don't matter. But when PC comes into the picture all the sudden it's well where is so and so game on PC? What makes a console appealing (to me) is the games it offers that I can't get anywhere else, and the features. Otherwise what is the point, and what separates it that makes it better than the competition? Better hardware? Please. For less than $250 I could get a GPU that fits into an existing non gaming PC, and turns it into a gaming machine. With better image quality and performance than said plastic box. Even basic Walmart PC's are coming with i5's or 7's with 8 gigs of ram. Once you replace the integrated card you are set for years. Don't settle folks, demand more for your system(s) instead of praising these guys. We're not in launch year anymore.

Holiday exclusives are kind of a waste. Yes sales pick up during the holidays but it's the annual releases which gather moat of those sales cannabilizing sales of 1st party exclusives.

Its depends on what you mean by need...

Lets look at last year (GLOBAL SALES).

From Jan 1, 2014 to Sept 6, 2014:

PS4 sold 6.25mm units - or 695k per month.
Xone sold 2.41mm units - or 268k per month.
That is a ratio of 2.6x.

From Sept 6, 2014 to Dec 31, 2014:

PS4 sold 8.32mm units - or 2.08mm per month.
Xone sold 5.64mm units - or 1.41mm per month.
That is a ratio of 1.5x.

Xone had some good exclusives launch around that time. HMCC, SSOD, FH2. There monthly sales increased 426%

PS4 had very little. There monthly sales STILL increased 200%.

I would expect that given MSFT is coming with Halo 5 MSFT will see another 400%-500% increase in sales.

But even if Sony has another year with few Holiday exclusives - a 200% increase in sales, and outselling the XBone 1.5 to 1.0 (GLOBALLY) isn't bad.

Another stat I thought was worth mentioning:

From Jan 1, 2014 to March 22, 2014
PS4 sold 2,541,556 units
Xone sold 980,551 units

From Jan 1, 2015 to March 22, 2015
PS4 sold 2,379,157 units DOWN 6.4% YoY
Xone sold 1,042,713 units UP 6.3% YoY

So while PS$ is still DOMINATING Xmas sales could be lower for PS4 YoY and higher for Xone YoY leading to something like a 1.25x ratio.

PLEASE NOTE SONY FANBOYS - I am not claiming that Xone will out sell PS4 GLOBALLY for even a single month - much less catchup. I'm simply giving statistics.

OT: Sony already has lots of exclusives for the next months like Ratchet & Clank, Until Dawn, The Tomorrow's Children, Everybody's gone to the Rapture,Persona V, No Man's Sky, God of War 3 Remaster and so on.
Not to mention games like The Order and BloodBorne are already out.

The mass media and fanboys strangely enjoy focusing on the holidays because for some reason they believe that it's more important to have big games during the great American holiday than balanced throughout the year....

As someone who owns both a PS4 and an X1 and plays them both regularly. I have to say if anyone actually thinks that either of these 2 have the console market locked down are completely wrong. One big holiday season with big exclusives can change tides in a matter of a couple months. Xbox has always listened and took feed back,how else do you think the xbox 360 lasted so long,they continue to add features people wanted. It must be pretty frustrating to want a simple feature like appearing offline and having no idea or any kind of feedback system if its coming soon. The sony fans did it to themselves they have sony believing they created this god like perfect machine. The ps4 is way behind on features only thing saving now is the percieved notions that everything runs better when 90% of people cant tell the difference and you except the xbox one to surpass the ps4 in terms of fps and resolution in a year or so

Yes they need it. There is no time to lolligag and let Xbox back in the competition. Sony should wrap this generation up and own it if they stay on it. From what people say about their business it sounds like they need the Ps4 to keep dominating in order to help save the larger parent company. Ps4 has done wonders to help keep Sony afloat during the tough times they went through earlier.

Probably not,public perception is that the PS4 is the must have item,multiplats are helping PS4 sales and there are plenty of those out that look and run better on PS4,you could quite literally buy nothing but multiplats on either console and have plenty to play,then there are all the great indie and f2p games plus exclusives lined up all year round on PS4 that X1 does not have.I buy exclusives only for my X1 the rest I buy for PS4,the bad taste that MS has left in gamers mouths has definatly hit the general public,I have talked to tons of casual gamers who knew all about E3 and the disasterous X1 unveil,and the terrible policies and direction MS tried to go in,this added up to the fact that PS is a more global brand with a bigger diversity of games and superior horsepower means that even if Uncharted and other big hitters dont come until 2016 then PS4 is still the best choice,Bloodborne has not been too bad for the consoles portfolio either

From a gamers perspective yes of coarse. From a sales perspective no they dont. Sony has done a remarkable job of moving ps4 without a single must have game last xmas. As a mater of fact the ps4 has been selling ridiculously well without a killer app. Hell until bloodborne came out i really didnt even use must ps4. Basically sony could put a pile of bricks in the box and it would still out sale the competition.

No it doesn't, exclusives aren't influencing this sales war as much as people would like to think. Ps4 is simply the console to have and nothing is gonna change that
