I finally bought a PS4 - so how does it stack up against my Xbox One?

However, as you can plainly see, there was a gaping hole in my console collection: the PS4. Though a handsome machine, it simply didn't offer enough exclusive clout for me to justify the expense back in 2013, while the games that I was excited about -- Transistor, Uncharted 4, Planetside 2, Bloodborne and the like -- were either already available on PC or months away from release. Since my colleagues both have one, I was content to let it slide.

Then Bloodborne launched. So I bought a PS4. And I love it.

So after owning a PS4 for a fortnight or so, I thought it might be fun to pen an impressions piece. Not a review, rather what strikes me as the features and functionality that set the PS4 apart from the Xbox One I've used over the last 18 months, both good and bad, and what initially grabs me about the device as a gamer as well as a reviewer."

Decent article though I disagree on the controller. The DS4 is a big step up from the DS3, but still lacking behind the 360/Xbox One controllers.

He nailed Kinect, it does feel strange not using it. The fact that I can say either "Xbox On" or hit the center button on the controller and my Xbox, TV, surround sound, and cable box all turn on and i am ready to rock is truly awesome. Switching inputs has literally become a chore, having to dig out a separate remote sucks, it feels so outdated, like using a flip phone in a smart phone world.

I disagree, I think the PS4 controller is much better than the X1's. It feels better/more comfortable and has a better dpad.

Plus it has the light (which is used in many games for effects like the police siren effect in GTA5), a touchpad, speaker, standard 3.5mm headphone jack and a rechargeable battery which can be recharged using your android phone's power charger or a PC. None of which the X1 controller has.

Also, you do know that both the PS4 and PS3 (since the Slim, through HDMI-CEC) can also turn on your TV and Receiver (if its HDMI-CEC also) when you turn on the PS4, right?

Haha, yeah, I think choosing two and a handheld is the best way to shoot for. Any two of the PS4, XO and Wii U will sort you out, potentially with a 3DS or Vita.

@Moldiver: I'd highly recommend the 3DS. Fantastic system. If you're in Europe I'd recommend the New 3DS over the New 3DS XL, it's more comfortable, though I admit that I have smaller hands.

I too think it is great, but I won't lie. After many long hours playing Destiny, it can make my hand hurt in the bones that connect to my ring and pinky fingers. When I grab the controller, I have a bad habit of trying to use my middle fingers to pull the triggers. Holding the controller this way causes my ring and pinky fingers to hang freely below, as there is nothing to support them there. So, after a while that lack of support causes soreness in my aging hands. It should be noted I have a history of joint problems, these hands like to complain a lot.

Just a personal experience, I've never met anyone else who said they've had issues. I retrained myself to only use my index fingers for the shoulder buttons, and that helps some. That enables the remaining fingers to more easily grab the handles of the controller and keep that grip.

The problem would be fixed for me if the bottom of the hand grips were fatter on the back side, giving those 2 fingers something to rest against while playing. Pick up your DS4 and hold it with your index and middle fingers on the triggers, you'll notice how the other 2 fingers kinda hang freely (you can grip the handles, but you have to actually try, it isn't the natural resting position), and how only an inch or so extension on those hand grips towards your fingers would fix the problem.

Hell, I might even duct tape the handgrips until they're wide enough at the bottom.

A small gripe, but it's an issue I've had none the less.

I think the DS4 is the weakest part of the console personally. From the way the share and options button are sitting on the curved corner like they were afterthoughts. And how the controller makes my hands sweat, and the thumbsticks feel slippery over time.

Heck, I even control netflix (and other media apps) with my TV remote... Sure, there is no "xbox on" but if the rest of the sysyem is clunky, hard to navigate and install tines slower what good is it really?

I am going to disagree with you on this.

If you are like me and prefer Action/Adventure RPG's or just RPG's then you would know how long some of these games take to play and with say 4 to five games this could be enough to last you many months to the exclusion of the other consoles so it becomes rather pointless and expensive to own them all.

I think it would be a simple matter of just picking a console that has or will have the games you like and will want to play.

Still if you like relatively short games (I am not counting on-line games here) and you have the money as well as the time then by all means get all the consoles that will have the games you like.

I'm enjoying both of them. I had been playing XB1 more for awhile, but after Bloodborne got released and the new PSPlus games, I've been playing my PS4 a lot more. Both systems have lots of great games to play on them. If I were still working, I'd have a Wii U by now as well. Already own both a 3DS and PSVita. The article was well done.

They are both good. It is not like one is extremely better than the other. Gaming media sensationalists would like to think so, but in reality, the choice comes down to what you value and preferences more than it comes down to one is better than the other.

I started the gen with all three consoles. I have gone with X1, but I could've gone just as easily with PS4. Nintendo games are great, but the Wii U is junk.

I did it the otherway round . Bought the PS4 at launch then got an Xb1 at xmas. I agree with the article that the XB1 has the better exclusives and that the differences on multiplat games are nothing to shout about. I also Agree that its the Ps4 exclusives that really show of the hardware. But even when that novelty of good visuals wears off...I find myself going back to halo, forza and my friends on XBL. Just seems to be how I spend my gaming time.

OBVIOUSLY others will feel different, and I should not even have to state that, but I will just to save certain folks the hassle of wasting their bubs by stating the obvious.

I play all of my multiplats on ps4 (and i prefer sony exclusives) some of ms exclusives are good its that there few and far between.

1. reasons. (controller) grand theft auto has the flashing lights on the controller, and the speaker which is fn awesome in the gta games, and the touchpad is sick. thats just one example of how they impliment the dualshock on multiplat games.

2. the performance, the ps4's performance on games are just better, need i say more?

The PS4 controller is not superior the x box 1 controller fits way better in the hands i have used both. The PS4 controller is an improvement over the PS3 one, but it still not a better quality. Before people think i am bias don't disagree try both out for yourself and give an honest view then!

It's horses and I think a lot of it comes down to hand size. Both controllers are excellent for sure. In this case, though, the DS4 does have more features such as the battery and audio connection that require you to pay out extra.

I honestly have no issues going back and forth from the Dualshock to the Xbox controller. Both to me feel very good in the hand and have a nice layout. The touchpad on the back of the Dualshock and the blue light are about useless, but they don't detract from an otherwise excellent controller.

Until an Xbox controller is made to the specification of symmetrical human hands, then the DualShock 4 will be better. And by that I mean that the analogue stick placement of Xbox controller has never made complete sense to me, as much as the DualShock's placement. A person's thumb doesn't naturally rest higher on your left side of the controller, so you have to reach up to use the left analogue, when it's something that is used so often that it should be placed where your thumb naturally rests (lower down). Sony fixed the issue of DS3 sticks being to close together. The general placement was never the issue. That's my opinion of course.... or science and mechanics?

I feel that PS4 has the better rated games, a larger quantity of current and upcoming games and more diversity in their lineup, and more innovative gaming features such as Remote Play and Share Play. The PS4 OS is so much quicker and less needlessly bloated than the XB1 OS. Again, that's my opinion.... or something that can be measured with facts and logic?

I personally feel Xbox has the better games that a lot more gamers want to play, more exciting titles and has the better anticipated titles yet to launch and be announced. And MS has definitely proved that they have the more diverse line up especially at launch.

Their OS on the other hand could use more of an improvement, but their features are great and a welcome addition to gaming that Sony has taken a lot from and added it to their own system. That is also my opinion...with a bit of logic and facts...?

Likewise with the PC for me, which is my primary gaming system. The PC being my primary game station is why I actually bought the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 late in their cycle,... I bought them in October of 2012. In this current generation, I decided to get the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One much much earlier. It's all about opinions. I play xb1 more at the moment, but i think ps4 has better exclusives. I'd say driveclub is a good bit better than fh2 for example, and well xb1 has nothing to compare to bloodborne and the order at the moment. I really liked infamous, and unless you want to compare sunset overdrive to that, xb1 doesn't really have an infamous type game. That being said, ori and the blind forest is great, and titanfall is fun. I also prefer xb1 u.i. At the moment the ps4 to me is better for the neutral, but maybe microsoft will have a strong E3. Exclusives like tomb raider and quantum break are significant. I'm also keen on both consoles indie plans.

It's very hard to compare Driveclub to Forza Horizon. Other than having cars with wheels, the two don't have much in common. The exclusives on each console are different enough where you really can't make direct comparisons. Having both consoles right now is very nice in that regard.

Personally, I like the heavier X1 controller and think that the trigger feedback is amazing.

As you are gripping around corners in the Forza games and feel the triggers acting like the car it is truly an amazing experience, or in shooters having the feeling of recoil on guns is also amazing.

Ive always said both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. As a gamer that owns a PS4, PC and WiiU, Ive always believed in enjoying the best of all worlds and I have had the privilege of enjoying some of the best games Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have to offer.

Article seems very well written, very fair and very well thought out. I am surprised he came down on the side of Dual Shock as I love the Xbox controller. And the important points are 1. The PS4 has better looking exclusives. 2. The Xbox has more and more fun exclusives. 3 Kinect really is cool. I cant tell you how much I miss it when Im in the living room or bedroom instead of my office. Xbox On. Xbox watch Comedy Central, Xbox pause, Xbox Rewind, Xbox Fast Forward. Xbox snap to TV. Xbox Goto Vudu. Or in Madden being able to call timeouts and audibles.

It's all personal opinion, and frankly I feel both PS4 and Xone have enough exclusives to justify the purchase.

I wanted DR3 and F5 at launch. So I got an Xone. I already played TLOU on PS3, so that didn't attract me. ISS might be a bit of fun, but no one spends $450 just for that. TF more then filled the lack of a shooter to compete with KZ. DC? I have F5, and I personally think it's the superior game. The came SSOD, FH2 and HMCC vs LBG3 and the Show? And The Order is basically Ryze - pretty but not much of a game. Until Bloodborn I had no desire for a PS4. Now I will pick one up in the next few weeks. Xone does not currently have a single game as impressive as BB from what I have heard.

That's not true. I see achievements and trophies as a way to track my record in the game and let people see that record even if they don't see me play or have that game.

To me, achievements and trophies are just as much a social feature as Facebook, Twitch, and Twitter integration.

It's like the "stats" you have when you play a sport. Some people care about those stats... Some people don't... I don't think age is a determining factor though.

I recently bought a ps4 again after getting rid of it a year ago. I was very against the ps4 for a various of reasons, but they seem to have fixed a lot of my issues and the console is great. I haven't touched my Xbox for a week other than the 1 time I played cod in 3 weeks. I think I will make it my preferred console for multiplats until I get my PC since it runs games better and I like the controller better for everything except FPSs, though I do like the Xbox One controller also. The system's speed was one of my problems but that has been fixed, only thing they need to do is fix the store, though I haven't had any problems with it I know others have. I can't wait to see what Sony announces and I hope they have something else I am interested in coming this year

obviously get nintendo for their 1st party games, but excluding them I don't even know how M$ has such a wide consumer audience.

sony has turned out great games with each generation, always providing the most throughout each iteration.

M$ has a tendency to release a few good games then quit support in the final 2-3 years, basically not offering any more solid games until the next system.

Of course new systems will never have all the great exclusives available just yet, but we know which system is going to get them eventually. And in the meantime you can play whatever multiplatform game there is...or in my case catch up on my ps3 backlog of too many games I got from ps+ discounts and freebies...

I still believe if ps3 was the first next gen system to release instead of 360 then M$ would be out of the console business by now. That 1 year early release by the 360- took all the impulse "next gen" buyers away from sony because "NEXT GEN!"...

But, like I said earlier get the system with the games you like. I have a 3ds, a wii u that never gets played, but it has some of my favorite games, and a ps3 and ps4 that are my two primary choices. There's nothing out there on an xbox console for me. And I'm not buying one...even if all my friends did just because...

Pretty much all Flagship Tv models got DLNA.
Soon all mid-tier Smart tv's as well will have DLNA.
Download a movie, put it on a External HDD and plug it to you're Tv, Done.

Media was great back in 2005-2012, but since then? all the media features we once had on the Ps3 have become a major thing on all Tv's. I would rather have as much RAM dedicated to gaming, then to Media.

Interesting article as i didn't know the install time was that big on xb1...i don't own either but when i do it will be just 1. I'm still on last gen and the gen before that and i'm enjoying my time there thank you very much. I still think today's games aren't that good enough for me to shell out 400-500 bucks to play them.

I've recently done the reverse (owned a ps4, just bought an xbone) and honestly feel the same way.

I think the menu system etc is far more convulted on the xbone, its not very user friendly. However this might be because i'm without kinect, I know the machine was designed around having one.

Either way I don't really care. The little things that bother me about the consoles are far outweighed by the fun i'm having on them.

Can someone please shed some light on these "excellent exclusives"? Ryse is boring, halo mc are rehashed games, forza is okay but full of dlc. Nothing stacks up to bloodborne, driveclub, killzone, and even TLOU just to match a remaster. Ill give xbone disney fantasia though, that game is tight.

I really love it, when someone say: I didn't buy the Ps4 because most of it's game are either on PC, or far away from Release.
and the fun part is? 80% of all XB1 games is on PC. I would pick the other way around. But that is because i am not a Forza or a Halo gamer. That really did cut my list short, and yes, having a XB360 for 9 year's still didn't convince me to like any of these games. It's just not for me.

Apps? I guess if people buy a system for the apps, are okye with it. but PC and Smart Tv's got it all covered.

Overall, if you don't own a gaming PC, a XB1 is a good deal. if you do own a good Gaming PC, you wasted 400$ on a early access box.

I will never buy an xbone, just have zero interest in it, most of its games have come or will come to PC anyway per Microsoft's own comments so there's really no need, and what remains isn't worth buying a system for. Congrats on finally getting a PS4 though, it truly is a great piece of tech and the best console out this gen, enjoy it!
