I don't know about it being pushed in this context. It seems pretty subtle and no announcement was made regarding Kung Jin's sexual proclivities before some perceptive gamers drew that conclusion. Even then, NetherRealms just did people a solid and confirmed any suspicions. Doesn't really seem like an attention-bolstering move. That said, I don't think anyone should ever mind a character being gay. Not all characters in games really make their sexuality known very often. It's often assumed (particularly, Nintendo's characters).

I don't think it really matters as long as it isn't obvious like having a strong supporting character of the opposite sex that's clearly a romantic interest (i.e., Elena Fisher of Uncharted fame). They could be homosexual/heterosexual/bisexu al/pansexual/asexual, as long as they aren't in-your-face about whatever they may be, that could explain characters like Mario's and Link's endless cycle through the friend zone.

Personally, I like it when games are ambiguous in regards to that. Leaves a lot to the imagination.

Not sure why people are bothered by this. This was such a tiny part to his story (one i missed on my first play-through). He is actually one of the more interesting characters (and one of the strongest). There is no agenda in this game, they have a single gay character, hell they even have a reptile man, a bug women (who kisses another women in the game but you dont see people bitching about that) and a 4 armed dragon man. If you are upset that this is in the game you really need to rethink your life and why you play video games.

According to the article, and some of the comments, it has nothing at all to do with game play. I guess there was a scene where it was hinted at briefly as an aspect of the character...for character development I assume...or just some filler to flesh out the scene. So really it didn't have much to do with anything.

If they beat the message over and over again in the story then I could understand what you are saying. But how long did it take before someone noticed this and mentioned it for it to be confirmed? That seems pretty subtle to me.

So, no, being gay may not add content to the story, overall or otherwise, but it does add personality to the character. It makes them into something less two dimensional, and helps the viewer become connected to them in some way, which is most definitely part of telling a compelling a story...but can't say if this MK has a good story given it's a fighting game so I wouldn't expect much to begin with.

Anyhow, it seems that him being gay didn't really matter to the story...it only seems to matter to people who want to make a fuss about it.

Reading through the comments, I must say, I'm really surprised to see so many people against this sort of thing.

People threw a bit of a fit when they realized Samus Aran was revealed to be a woman, but things have simmered down a lot with more female protagonists. Hopefully the same can be achieved here.

As an aside though...who determines what's being shoehorned into a game? Because it wasn't common before? With time, we see an increase in many things: female/ethnic characters, characters with "nontraditional" sexual orientations, even bald characters. I think the diversity of what a character can be could really hit home for many people it otherwise would not without that kind of "shoehorning". The Phantom Pain's touching on the subject of child soldiers and blood diamonds might not resonate with many of you, but for those of that culture, it's enormous. I really like the different effects a character's origin/behaviors can have on degree of empathy, especially with story becoming a big thing in games today.

You have to make a stand somewhere. Frankly, I would consider Far Cry 4 to be making far more of a statement. Sounds to me like you would never know about Kung Jin if you missed that one line of dialogue between him and Raiden.

For instance games should have more female leads or include gay charecters or this or that. Whatever serves the story best then thats what should be done, devs or anyoome shouldnt have to feel like they need to include something because they get crap if they dont.

perfect example of a game that pushed no agendas but was just simply a great game and that was the story they wanted to tell is GONE HOME. Thats how things should be done not just little token throw in charecters just to say hey we have diversity.

To use one of my least favorite comic book writers as an example, Dan Slott. He introduced a character in his Spider man books, Max Modell. In one issue, he made a comment about a gift he received from his partner, allowing you to figure it out without making a big deal about it. And on the other hand, does anyone remember when DC Comics did when revealing the new Batwoman? We should be less "OMG, WOW!! THAT'S SO GREAT!" And more like "Great. Now on to other things."

When Raiden questioned why Kung Jin didn't join the academy his response coupled with Raiden saying what he said hadn't really registered to me until a few moments after. My response..."OH, because he's gay!"

Nothing more or nothing less...well I did think it was a little bit cool, to be honest I was just glad they didn't do the cliche thing of trying to push Cassie & Kung Jin into a relationship since they had animosity in the beginning.

Takeda & Jacqui was good enough since they already had chemistry with one another apparently. Though I'm sure is some douchehead really wanted to stir the pot not only would they mention Kung Jin being gay, but also Takeda and Jacqui being a believable interracial couple.

Regardless, good times when diversity in games is done "Because" and not because "Someone said so", it has a better effect when it's just done to be done, unlike how Bioware's PR pushed Dragon Age having the first homosexual character ever(which is a lie) down your throats for unnecessary publicity.

If you notice, Raiden actually points out that it isn't relevant to the story by saying that the Shaolin don't care who his heart desires. It's never mentioned again, so I don't understand why people are getting in a tizzy. I think its great that he's gay. Adds an interesting quality to a new character and hopefully one people can embrace since he's clearly a flawed "real" character. He lets his vulnerabilities show. And no, gay isn't the flaw, his self loathing is.
