I doubt the reviewer is pretty good in fighting games when I read sentences like: "The first round of the fight will be rather sluggish and poorly paced, as you will see yourself constantly frozen in place by Sub-Zero’s relentless attacks"

Also not one word about how good or bad the netcode is, about all the custom items/rules that can be enabled in multiplayer modes, the Krypt or the Kombat Challenge Towers.

lockedongamer13299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

Does it matter if the reviewer is good at fighting games or not? I'd find that useful as I'm not that proficient at fighting games as the reviewer's opinion is more equal to where I am as a gamer.

CorndogBurglar3299d ago

It kind of does matter in a way. Simply because he says that your first fight with Sub-Zero will be slow and sluggish as you continually get frozen by his traps.

You dont even have to be good at Mortal Kombat. If you play fighting games in general then you should be able to avoid most of what a computer controlled Sub-Zero throws at you. That being the case, a whole lot of people's experience won't be slow and sluggish at all.

So, it isn't really fair to make the assumption that just because his experience with a certain match went one way, that means everyone's experience will also be like that.

Genki3299d ago

Don't mind him. Fanatics always try to discredit a reviewer if they say something they don't wanna hear. Attacking the person rather than the criticism.

Hoffmann3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

For me it does matter, I am some of the guys that play fighting games since 1991 and I doubt that I will have any problems there against the AI.

Other problems in this review are that the reviewer is also not mentioning some of the other big parts of the game like the whole online mode, the arcade mode and all the unlockable rules/features that can be used for multiplayer matches.

There is also no mention of the Krypt and the Challenge Towers.

@Genki. Yeah..totally like seen in my comment here, where I totally attack a person, rite? Calling me indirectly a "fanatic" is totally the opposite of course.

MASTER_RAIDEN3299d ago

It absolutely does matter. If I wrote a review on an fps and made the point that "from the beginning, your always getting shot at!", that would be the stupidest, most redundant point ever. That's what's supposed to happen in in the game and it's your job as the player to master the defensive and offensive mechanics. Just because you're not good at it doesn't make It a bad game.
Most legit review sites only allow reviewers to review games they enjoy playing/specialize in. Not every reviewer on the team is asked to review the latest JRPG for example. It seems as if this person spends little to no time playing fighting games and is just confused and upset at the fighting game pace. Any fighting game thrown at this guy would garner a bad review. Don't review something you wouldn't play on your own time.

OhMyGandhi3298d ago

initially, I felt that it wouldn't matter. But the reality is, I don't want the reviewer to be the handicap, and knock back a game that may otherwise be good. Especially if said reviewer isn't honest about it up front.

For me, and as others have mentioned, If I play a shooter, I'd like to think that the gamer themselves are skilled, and if the game they play is deemed difficult for "the average player", they could mention that within the article. That way, those players know what they are getting into, and not letting an otherwise inexperienced gamer passively aggressively score an otherwise excellent game.

Revolver_X_3298d ago (Edited 3298d ago )

Im a Sub Zero user, so Im afraid the situation will be the other way around.

@N4GFulla
I didn't see him complain about the score. An 8 is really good. He complained about the ACTUAL content of the review. It honestly lacks telling us anything about the new stuff. But looking at your name, I can tell what kinda reactions you look for. Be careful that one bubble sneaks up quick.

Griever3298d ago

How would you feel if a Geography teacher gave you an F in your Biology quiz? The person reviewing the test needs to have to necessary knowledge to evaluate it. How can a Geography teacher know if your Biology exam was good or bad? IMO it matters if the reviewers like or understand the intricacies of a genre or not.

masa20093299d ago

The writer is talking about how the fight serves as a tutorial.
It must be done on purpose that he is frozen often, it's not related to the writer's ability.

I do agree that the review is not very thorough or well written, but it did have a few nuggets of info.

Dhampir3298d ago

The first fight isn't a tutorial...

After reading the article, it's clear the person reviewing this never played a fighting game before. Nor did he take the time to actually learn the game.

"Another factor that has a negative impact on the game, is the similarity between some characters. Not to spoil the game completely, I will only state that some characters only differ from one another with their appearance, and visualization of their moves. And while there are only two or three cases of this phenomena, they are most prominent during the campaign and make you feel at times like you have been playing with the same character for prolonged periods of time."

The whole "review" is quite long-winded and incredibly vague. You could change the names and it would fit soul calibur easily. It makes me think of a high school kid who read only a summery of a book, and tried to write an essay about it.

Revolver_X_3298d ago

Mortal Kombat does NOT give you tutorials.

fanboysmackdown3299d ago

So you're an expert and he's an amateur? I'll take his word for it, he's actually played the game.

Super_ike3298d ago

dude, you are on N4G, your opinion is only as good as your bubble count, no matter how right you are.

Azzanation3298d ago

Everytime a game gets a poor or average review, the N4G community blame the skill set of the reviewer. .theres more to a review then just playing the game.

tekksin3298d ago

Did anybody stop and think that perhaps the first fight was sluggish because it was scripted? Like, "you were hit by sub zero's freeze attack! Some attacks don't hurt, but effect how your player moves during kombat."

Regardless, an ad hominem is no way to assess the credentials of a reviewer. As a gamer you should be exposed to reviews from all walks, not just the niche that fancies anything out of the genre.

Revolver_X_3298d ago

We'll just have to agree to disagree there. I want a fan of that genre to review a game. This is why back in the day magazines had many reviewers and writers, not 1 youtube guy reviewing everything. A fan of the genre can relate mechanics to other similar games, and give me a better picture. A fan of the genre most often knows what details are more important to share over others in their review. Last thing I want is an FPS guy reviewing an RPG Im interested in. I would most likely feel like there are gaps in his coverage, which would probably be an accurate assumption.

KosherNostra3298d ago

The reviewer is playing with a stolen game. He can't comment on things that will only be available after the official release, such as netcode and other multiplayer aspects.

Revolver_X_3298d ago

"IF" that's the case and If he is otherwise unable to review certain portions due to embargo or online functionality, then his review is invalid or incomplete, end of story.

Loadedklip3298d ago

Wow I am shocked that u have more disagrees than agrees. Do these people not understand that that quote doesn't just show the reviewer is not just "not good" at fighting games but is actually evidence this reviewer is lacking the basic fundamentals to even qualify to provide an even remotely decent review of a genre he/she clearly doesn't grasp at all.

The reasoning behind me leaving some features out of the review is simple. Most have figured within the franchise for years, and even if the game is filled to the brim with such, it doesn't make it good. Dragon Age Inquisition is full of senseless additions, however duo to its poor mechanical composure such are nothing but unnecessary bother. Therefore I have decided to concentrate on mortal komabt's design and mechanics as they make the game what it is. And towers, and challenges that you have all mentioned are nothing more than mere additions to Netherrealm superior display of creativity.

antz11043298d ago (Edited 3298d ago )

Well shouldn't you mention it anyway and leave it to the reader to decide if it's important to them? It just makes your review seem suspect if you leave out aspects like that.

theshredded3299d ago

Oh Netherrealm how u have fallen

ginsunuva3298d ago

LOL_WUT3298d ago

I'll take the score still have this pre ordered can't wait for tomorrow

kama8103298d ago (Edited 3298d ago )

Your complaints, and constant arguing is simply futile. If you are self-centred enough to think that everyone who is a potential Mortal Kombat customer is a professional with tournament like abilities, you are simply deluded. I agree, I've played through the entirety of the game on 'medium', and some because of it treat me like a heretic unworthy of Mortal Kombat.

However, while acknowledging that the game is full of features, your overall stance have only further proved my argument that mention of such is unnecessary. Most of you can recite the said features from the back of your head, making provision of such wasteful as in your minds only pros such as yourselves will play the game.

When writing a review I am constrained by an undisclosed word limit, if I was to write about everything that Mortal Kombat has to offer the review would be 3 to 5 thousand words long, and then its length would be the main complaint. Therefore I decided to use the 1000 words, which I had at my disposal to describe game’s design and mechanics, as most players are not 'pros' and will have no, to little experience with the franchise.

On a side note, I'd like to say that the copy of the game that I have used for my review is not from an illicit source, as it was simply delivered early from a well-known retailer.

If you are still overflowing with bitterness, then I'd like to familiarize yourself with my final words, which you can consider to be my epitaph for this thread.

''Well, that's just too f... bad, SUNSHINE''

Storm23937d ago

Cool. Wanted to play Hell Let Loose and I always enjoy a good golf game. Mortal Kombat X should have been 11 IMO though.

NoFanBoy937d ago

HLL seems a bit of a mess on console, I hope it improves but didn't have fun with the beta.

EvertonFC936d ago

Same was looking fwd to the beta but it was not a great experience

1nsomniac936d ago

Yea HLL is great on PC but is really hard to enjoy currently on console.

NeoGamer232937d ago

Ya, I really wanted to play PGA 2K21 but didn't want to pay the price.

Eonjay936d ago

Agreed. MKX should have been 11. I will play PGA though. Haven't played since Tiger Woods. This month feels lacking.

Ashunderfire86936d ago

I know right lol!!! Mortal Kombat X is free on PS5, but I understand PS4. Heck the PS4 version should be easy to get for just $20 or even less $10 dollars on ebay or selling stuff apps.

Profchaos936d ago

You can play it right now open beta is live and free

SegaSaturn669937d ago

MKX was already in PS Plus Collection. This is the second time they've double dipped. Thank god the golf game lets u hit balls into the crowd.

BrainSyphoned937d ago

At least twice this year they have double dipped into PS Now games as well.

Christopher937d ago

Two separate services isn't double dipping. People do understand that, right? Subscribing to one or the other doesn't give you benefits to the other in any way.

jznrpg937d ago

Fine with me I don’t sub to PS now

ocelot07937d ago

You don't know PS Collection is not available to PS4 only owners right? Only way they can claim this is by buying a PS5 or logging into a PS5 and claiming them.

So am pretty sure a fair few of the 100+ million PS4 owners are thankful.

Knushwood Butt937d ago

Mortal Kombat X was never released in Japan so this is another one that won't be included in the lineup for Japan and will probably be swapped for some crap but I'll remain optimistic.

Silly gameAr936d ago

I'm pretty sure MK has never been on plus. In the US anyway.

Not sure what PS Now has to do with PS Plus.

Profchaos936d ago

CorndogBurglar936d ago

BLow936d ago

And like clockwork, you always have some complaining. Happy Gaming

Ozzy2407936d ago

Only PS5 owners get the PS plus collection which majority of playstation owners don't have

TheExecutioner936d ago (Edited 936d ago )

Not every one have ps+ collection

When u will stop thinking like a child

Knushwood Butt935d ago

Update

Japan gets Castlevania Requiem instead of MKX

Not crap then!

kneon936d ago

3 games I won't play even when they are free

lipton101931d ago

Really? They’re all legit good games

kneon931d ago

I've never liked those kinds of fighting games so mortal combat is out. Golf? I don't know why such a game even exists. the last time I played a golf game was on the Apple ][. And finally hell let loose looks like just another in the endless stream of ww2 shooters, I already have enough of those in my backlog that I will probably never play either

SurgicalMenace936d ago

You know when you actually buy your games you wouldn't be so ungrateful for the free ones. Just a thought.

LiViNgLeGaCY936d ago

This month just didn't appeal to ME personally. If it's a good a good month for others, hey more power to them. And please, I'm willing to bet I've bought more Playstation games than you have. Probably shouldn't make assumptions about people without really knowing them, just a thought.

SurgicalMenace936d ago

How much you willing to wager, sir? I've purchased just over 20 games this month alone. Have over 830 games in my digital library 250 on my shelf and that is only the PS4. We'll skip the PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, VITA, and PS5 just to keep it fair. Who's counting though?🤷🏾‍♂️

936d ago
LiViNgLeGaCY934d ago

Whatever you'd like. Since the PS1 days, my collection is in the thousands, just on Playstation alone. Pissing match aside, again, you shouldn't make comments in the future where you look stupid (ex. Telling someone you don't know that they don't buy games)

SurgicalMenace934d ago

Or perhaps, since you have such the healthy collection, stop whining about the charity. If they don't give it, then buy it.

Pocahontas931d ago

WhT do you do for a living to afford 20 games in one month

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 931d ago
RedDevils936d ago

Shit games this month. Mortal Kombat X is already on PS+ Collection what the point of have it again. Throwing some indie and would be more happy.

Ozzy2407936d ago

Because the PS+Collection is only for PS5 owners which majority of playstation owners don't have

KyRo937d ago (Edited 937d ago )

Hell Let Loose looks great but it's not a casual game and a bit of a acquired taste. It's nice for people to dive in a d try it though. MKX is already on PS5 for free with the PS collection so that bad for PS5 owners and it was only two months ago everyone complained about a sports title being included as a game but yet they follow suit with another one 🤦🏻‍♂️

PS Plus started so well at the beginning of the year too.

SurgicalMenace936d ago

I never thought I'd see a day when people complain about what they get for free. Hey, there is another great alternative to settling for free games, BUYING what you want.

How much do you think a market leader is going to be willing to cut into their own pockets? How many games do you actually purchase or do you just wait for them to hit plus?

We actually are grown enough to know that we have to pay for greatness over here. You have an option to go to MS if you'd like as well. Otherwise, add it to your library, say thank you, and move on. How old are we here?🤔

KyRo936d ago (Edited 936d ago )

I've been subbed to PS plus since the very day it started when all we'd get is PS1 and minis on PS3. PS Plus as a service was always about the games. Now they've made it a requirement for online play you mistakingly think these games are the bonus. They're not. We pay for access to the games via the subscription. They're not free so before running your mouth and giving it the big one, please educate yourself before calling people out.

SurgicalMenace936d ago (Edited 936d ago )

Well sir, I too have been a PS+ member since it's inception and own well over 3,000 games on PS3, 1200 of PS4, and close to every game available on PS5. I speak from a supporting standpoint and I'm strongly against people who do more talking with their mouths than their wallets.

If you've not invested into the best experience possible, then why should your opinion be acknowledged? Plus is 70 dollars a year that equates to about $6 dollars a month....what do you expect to get, a choice?🤣

The day that beggers become choosers is the day that gaming dies. How many of the new releases have you purchased? If the answer is none, be happy with what is given. When you're playing the latest, you have little concern for the hand outs. Just a thought, champ.🤣

936d ago
Kurt Russell936d ago

Personally I am looking forward to Hell Let Loose. I don't think I would have dived in with a purchase for that one, but I am dead curious to play it... I am hoping it is just the kind of MP I have been hoping for since R6S went doolally.

KyRo936d ago

Yeah it looks great for sure. I've watched a few people play it on PC and I'm interested to know it's transitioned to console.

outsider1624937d ago

Yesss!! Played HLL open beta and it was amazing. The immersiveness, the one bullet shot, you can't just go running around shooting like in CoD or Bf.

NoFanBoy937d ago

The beta has a low framerate, lag, loads of pop in textures, flickering shadows etc. It felt horrible to control and aim. If they could improve it then there potential.

Majin-vegeta937d ago

Thry are aware. They made a post yesterday

FPS_D3TH936d ago

It’s not really optimized too well on pc yet either. Lots of flickering
