still think the lack of communication for an online game is not the best strategy. While I can understand what they are saying about all the negativity (go play a Call of Duty game online), it's still nice to be able to coordinate with your teammates.

Although I've never really been a fan of voice chat, I do think it should at least be an option. If I don't want to use it, I can just turn it off. And if they're worried about children's safety, they should place an age restriction on it. Oh, well! Maybe they'll patch it in when they release Ranked Battle. I'm still really hyped for this game!

The game pad map constantly updates to show which sections you own and which need work, so coordination will happen naturally as team mates "zone check" and converge to cover them.

For coordination, it's unneeded.
But for FRIEND MATCHES, where there's no vitriolic element like there is in public online matches and people wanna chat because it increases the fun of it, that's a whole different story.
Friend matches are filled with fun conversations that, normally, don't end up ruining friendships by being as horrible as in public matches.

VC for Friend matches should most definitely be a thing.

Still, I'm sad that its the traditional shooter community that made him feel this was necessary.
It really says a lot about how horrible that side of the community can be, when they drive a dev to want to take away a tool everyone enjoys just to put the ass-hats in their place.

" Splatoon has no voice chat and never will. Amano says: “This is coming from personal experience. When I played online games, I didn’t like the negativity I got and people telling me ‘You’re crap. Go away’. So we wanted to focus on the positive aspects of online gaming”."

putting personal preferences over overal user exp. Shameful.

So what stopped him from doing friends only voice or default mute?

Why Is Splatoon So Popular In Japan?

How, exactly, did Splatoon reach heights rivalled only by Pokémon in Japan? New IPs from the House of Mario appear as often as shiny Pocket Monsters, yet typically move comparatively mediocre numbers or fall into relative obscurity behind the premium marques of Mario, Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Pokémon. Take Pikmin and ARMS, for example, which we adore but struggle to compete with the tentpole franchises when it comes to sales numbers or mainstream mindshare.

So, again, how has Splatoon risen to become one of Nintendo's most important series in Japan?
