The PlayStation 4 is doing well as the console continues to fortify its foothold this generation, and with exclusive hit Bloodborne just released. But trouble is on the horizon. The are currently no first-party titles officially scheduled for the system during the all-important holiday season. This will surely change, but the company could be in for a rough Christmas.

I think it's fair to give Sony and Microsoft the benefit of E3 to surprise us with some new 2015 holiday games. It's just too early to know what they have planned for the holidays.

Same thing the PS4 does every Christmas. Celebrate the end to a very successful year. Last holiday season, xbox also had a Halo and Forza game and it did nothing to stop the PS4's worldwide lead from growing even bigger. In fact, Sony "gambled" on DriveClub and LBP3 and the PS4 was just fine and still sold very well over the holidays.

It amazes me how some people think November in the U.S. is all that matters. They forget the year has 11 other months. Sony has already dropped 3 AAA retail games (including possibly a major 2015 GOTY contender). Plus they have a few more games already planned out and a ton of quality indie games. PS4 is already having a solid year and doesnt need to worry about any one specific month.

SO we are NOT going to take into account the games that Sony will release troughout the year? those games stop existing for new PS4 users? there could be no way that a new Ps4 owner would want to buy an 8 month old game like bloodborne, EW!!! OLD!!!. For this year we still have ahead E3/Gamescom/TGS, not only for Sony, but for Microsoft too, we still don't know exactly what this winter season will look like.

Kill Strain, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Tomorrow's Children, Alienation, Until Dawn, God Of War 3 HD (whatever, but it still exist), Persona 5, Dragon Quest Heroes, MLB: The Show 2015 (new Ps4 owners that like Baseball), Tearaway Unfolded, Disgaea 5, Ratchet And Clank. Plus whatever new they announce at game shows.

it will be the best selling console once again worldwide. the xbox one may sell better in the u.s. and maybe the u.k. but only if microsoft takes drastic measures again with pricing and bundling.

i have a feeling sony will have the uncharted collection prepared for release to take up the spot of the new uncharted game. or gran turismo 7 prologue. the god of war 3 remaster isn't going to be a big seller but those will be.

we could also see no mans sky ready by then. the tomorrow children looks excellent too so they have other games coming down the pipe. plus the makers of killzone have something and we dont know how far along it is. same with david cage.

sony's strategy (which seems to be working well for them) could be to leave the fall line-up more open for third party games. the ps4 is the best seller so why not allow those games to breathe more and then release high profile aaa games throughout the year with less competition.

As a 40+ gamer I must say it feels strange talk about x-mas this early...as if the rest of the year didn't matter, that's how it is when you are young, how many times haven't read that someone wants to "spool forward" a whole year just to play a game...that's an scary thought!! :S

You are right it is to early to assume what the holiday can bring since E3 will give us more insight. What is baffling is how many gamers have consistently confused sales with overall lineup of games. Also, how many keep saying that MS provides games for the holidays when you look at it we are already in April and MS has provided some solid titles.

If we look at one territory and ignore what could be for E3, sure, Microsoft may have the better holiday. Since it never works like that, not much is set in stone - except that the PS4 will dominate mostly everywhere, outside of the United States, for certain.

Lest we forget that Sony also slashed the system's price (a price it continues to annihilate the competition with, at that).

Things will be fine for the PS4.

Sony hasn't really needed huge ips to sell PS systems.

Halo, Mario Kart, Smash etc normally do HUGE millions and move mega units for Nintendo and MS, Sony on the other hand hasn't really depended on such ips to actually sell units.

They'll be fine this fall as most PS systems sell based on many ips vs 1 single ip.

Sony still has some great games coming this and they will likely keep outselling XONE.

Consider such a lineup didn't have MS outsell Sony last gen....

I dunno. The PS4 is overdue for it's first official price cut. Given how it's selling, it's not really necessary, but all Sony would have to do is drop the price by $50, which they could likely afford, throw in some game as a bundle, and probably take the holiday just fine.

I dunno if Sony will feel the need to given that they aren't slowing down at their current price, and I don't think Sony is worried about losing one month in the US when compared to the revenue they'd lose by dropping the price. They're already "winning".

Guerrilla probably has a new Killzone ready (Since they've been releasing one every 2 years since KZ2 came out), likely a PS4 version of Mercenary since so many gamers have been asking for it!

I wouldn't be shocked if The Last Guardian was ready this holiday as well.

There's plenty of games that could fill that quarterly slot, even Sony Bend's new IP could be ready or anything of any of Sony's other studios besides Naughty Dog, maybe even God of War could be ready (although I think that one's likely a March 2016 release, because a 3 year gap is usual between releases).

I only own the PS4 and Wii U for next gen, but this whole discussion about what will Sony do this Xmas is completely ridiculous.

I'm all for topical discussion about business going-ons, but so many people are acting like Sony is completely doomed because they don't have any 1st party exclusives to market.

In the mean time, there are 3rd party exclusives they could easily push, or just market the general library of the PS4 like they do anytime they don't have a big game coming out.

I'd imagine most people looking for a console at Xmas time aren't thinking..."hmmm...I wonder what games are coming out this month to make a decision on what to buy". I'd imagine most of them have already made the decision long before based on the games that are out or are coming out. If they're getting it as a gift, the person buying it was probably told what to get. These aren't stocking stuffer impulse buy gifts, but main things to stick under the tree. If people care about Halo, they'll get X1. If people care about some Sony exclusive, they'll get a PS4. If they want a general gaming system, they'll look at general line up. Many of them will go by what they hear about the system, which generally is more positive for Sony in the real world away from N4G.

Yeah it's not like Destiny moved a million units last year. You know this little series called Batman being bundled and selling out in a day probably won't be that important either. Witcher 3 also is not first party or exclusive so we should probably pretend they won't move units and be on our merry way. They probably won't even be considered for gifts or any during Christmas because they'll be like 6 months old by then.

It's absolutely laughable to think that there couldn't be anything in the way of a Sony owned IP that Worldwide Studios has been working on for enough to time to release it this holiday.

Guerrilla Games has been releasing something every 2 years since KZ2 came out, they probably have a new Killzone to release or their new IP could very well be ready this holiday (Horizon has been in development for over 3 and a half years).

God of War has been in development since Cory Barlog went back to SSM in August 2013, so that could be ready.

GT7 could be ready.

Ratchet & Clank was meant to be coming out in the 1st half of this year, but Insomniac hasn't shown anything about the game yet. That's likely been pushed back for a Fall 2015 release and will be marketed heavily because of the movie getting a major cinema release.

If GT7 isn't ready then it's possible Sony has a team working on a new Motorstorm game or another racer.

Sony Bend have a new IP in the works, maybe that's ready.

As much as I doubt they'd release 2 big games in one year it's possible that Media Molecule's new IP could be released this year, it's been in development for around 4 years.

Level 5 has a game in development for PS4, maybe it's a new Ni No Kuni, White Knight Chronicles or a completely new IP, that could be ready for this holiday.

Sony has tonnes of potential games that could be ready, anything announced at E3 could have been in development for years, since World Wide Studios have been dead quiet for ages the 1st party developers could have at least a dozen potential games that could be ready for the holidays.

3rd party exclusives are also a possibility, along with the likes of Quantic Dream or other new 2nd Party AAA releases.

It's also possible that a big indie release like WiLD or Rime could be printed onto disc and marketed as a AAA release.
WiLD has Michel Ancel at the helm, so it's likely going to be a masterpiece and the sheer scale makes it worthy of a retail release IMO.

Most gamers- outside of some Xbox fanboys, it seems- buy games all year round. Unless I really screwed up, I've bought about 8 games in the past month, and we're a long way from the holidays.

Tell me: why does the rest of the year not matter? Isn't it even more advantageous- if you're looking ONLY at the holidays- for games to come out earlier in the year so that they'd be cheaper by around November, and thus have a stronger pull?

News flash, there are more months in the year than Christmas. I would rather be playing games all year.

I just finished The Order, playing Guilty Gear Xrd , Bloodborne, Metal Slug, Helldiver and soon I will play Bastion and Shovel Night. Then Toukidan, followed by J Stars and a bunch of other exclusives.

Fall will have Ratchet reimagined, Until Dawn and Tearaway from Sony with Disgaea 5, Persona 5, Dragon quest Heroes, God Eater 2, Jojo Bizarre, Everyones gone to Rapture, Rime, and a bunch of 3rd party exclusives.

Whereas you got what to play since November? Scream Ride?! Followed by what for the next 6 months? There have already been 5-6 1st and 3rd party exclusives on PS4 and we're just over 3 months into the year.

You want Smoke it's the idea that only the U.S. sales matter and only the holidays matter. While we're playing exclusives right now you guys got only Scream ride and a couple of Beta's. It's laughable at Best.

2013 had tons of 6 month lead time reveals...Killer Instinct being a big one, but that was the start of a new console gen, so it was out of the ordinary.

6 months is all one really needs. A game people want will be hyped whether it releases in one day or 10 years(The Last Guardian anyone?). If it's a big gun, have no doubt that it'll be added to why people were wrong to count out Sony in the holidays. I mean they're wrong now given how many 3rd party exclusives they have this holiday, but that's just semantics I guess because 1st party is all that matters apparently.

Given that people are pretty much looking at E3 for Sony to give an answer to the question that this article poses(in terms of 1st party exclusives), I would have no doubt that they bring in something to try and counter Halo. Simple price drop would do it TBH.

On a side note, found this an interesting point of view. Think I'll go look up how many games get revealed at E3 for release the same year, or early in to the next year.:)

I still don't think Uncharted was delayed because they needed time, but sure, they'll take it.

In my opinion, this primetime slot has been freed for a game that needs more exposure than Uncharted does.
