Bloodborne: Here’s What Developers Think of the Game; from Naughty Dog to Sony Santa Monica

While you’re waiting for me to have played Bloodborne long enough to write my review (IE: for it to stop kicking my butt), there are others expressing their opinion, and while you’ve probably read plenty reviews already, it’s interesting to read what people that know a thing or two about game development think of the latest PS4 exclusive.

What can anyone say? The Japanese know how to make some damn good video games.

chrismichaels043312d ago (Edited 3312d ago )

Bloodborne is proving to be the biggest game release of March and is an excellent addition to the growing PS4 library. With all of these 9.0 and 10.0 review scores across the board, I believe Bloodborne could definitely be an early contender for GOTY. I said it before and I'll say it again. Bloodborne just set the bar pretty high for the rest of 2015.

On a side note...its great to see even people from companies outside of Sony are praising the game including Microsoft, Respawn, Blizzard and Insomniac.

AndrewLB3312d ago

When was the last time you heard a developer talk trash on another when both studios had contracts making games for the same platform? You do know there are rules of conduct agreed upon in such contracts right?

Thou shall not disparage those who draw your paycheck, or any of their business interests. Or in more simplistic terms... don't sh*t where you eat.

chrismichaels043312d ago (Edited 3312d ago )

@AndrewLB - Im not saying competing developers would talk trash about another studios game. They just usually dont go out of their way to publicly compliment the game either or say anything about it all.

I just think its nice to see when a game like Bloodborne is so well respected throughout the entire gaming community that even companies outside of Sonys first party studios are publicly saying good things about it.

Sevir3311d ago

Andrew! Developers went out of there way to comment on other games when they released, the order, sunset overdrive, infamous second son all got praise from development teams in other companies. ND, GG, Rockstar and many more flocked to comment on Second Son's performance and game play.

Just settle down, it isn't anything about ethics. Jaffe and Cliffy B blow up on Twitter about the industry and on games both positively and negatively and nothings happened. Keep thinking they are barred contractually from giving an honest view about a game. Lol if Jaffe and Cliffy and even Ninjas Theory Devs can bash a game on Twitter, others can.

stragomccloud3311d ago

Why do you sound like a spokesperson for Sony. I'm not calling you a fanboy. It's just that your comment sounds like that of a Sony rep.

chrismichaels043311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

@stragomccloud - A job working as a videogame spokesperson would be awesome. Getting paid a nice salary while just sitting around playing and talking about videogames all day? For some reason, I can see myself doing that. LOL

Unfortunately for me, im just another gamer in a long line of gamers that is super impressed with how awesome of a game Bloodborne is.

TheDrunkenJester3311d ago

Honestly I bought my PS4 a couple months back for this game. I was initially upset at my purchase because of the lack of exclusives, but this game makes it soooo worth it.

DragonKnight3311d ago

Can't believe I'm saying this but, I have to agree with AndrewLB on this one, at least partially.

Abriael included far too many first party studios devs in this story. They would never bite the hand that feeds. He should have looked for more independent sources to get a better view.

Yetter3311d ago

I haven't played it and I'm not really a souls fan but it really looks like a fantastic game. It certainly is getting some great scores but its also a niche game that definitely isn't for everyone. GOTY is voted on by the editors for the vidoegame new outlet and because it isn't for everyone, I doubt it will pull of that many GOTY awards

chrismichaels043311d ago

@Yetter - Its those same editors and reviewers of videogame news outlets that have been giving Bloodborne all of those incredible 9.0 and 10.0 review scores. So why wouldnt they nominate Bloodborne for Game of the Year if they consider it one of the best videogames of 2015?

Ever since Demon's Souls clicked with hardcore gamers I knew instantly that Miyazaki's back to video game roots and basics campaign will do something good to gaming, is gonna catch on and revolutionize gaming as we know it.
It does bring back gamers to what made the 8-bit and 16-bit era fun-challenge.
It will change the mentality of millions of gamers in an era of vasual gaming.
It will restore the industry's confidence on Japanese game makers again.
It will revolutionize the JRPG genre or RPGs in general in the west to both veteran and new generation of gamers.
It will prove that it not all shooters this generation.
It will revitalize the horror genre.
It will inspire and teach western developers to think out of thw box again. Like what The Ring movie did to Hollywood.
Heh, most western developers can't even match the authentic western level designs im this game.

What Uncharted 2 did for last gen, Bloodborne is this game that will usher a new era of gaming and game creation.

TheRedButterfly3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

"What Uncharted 2 did for last gen, Bloodborne is this game that will usher a new era of gaming and game creation."

Okay bro, slow your roll. Bloodborne is everything we expected out of a Miyazaki game, but why would it make such a huge impact on gaming when the three games that it is practically identical to (Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2) had little affect on any game outside of Lords of the Fallen?

The Souls (and now Blood) franchises are incredibly popular within their nichés -- and that includes me (check my DS achievements http://www.trueachievements... ) -- but they really are sort of their own sub-genre of gaming. They aren't for everyone, and anyone who's played any of the 4 installments knows this.

Do I wish more games would take notes out of Miyazaki's playbook? Honestly, I'm not sure. A part of me is all "Hell yeah! The more awesome games we get the better!", but another part of me realizes that there is only one Miyazaki, and without him these games would only be shells.

Because it's so relevant, imagine the next Metal Gear without Kojima. Would it be the same? And if so, for how long? Eventually the 'inspiration' that any game takes from it will (most likely) be deluded and used as an example of how the sub-genre "has devolved" or whatever...

tl;dr: Miyazaki's talents are some of the best, but let's not pretend that an incredibly good game with a niché audience will "usher in a new era of gaming" or whatever.

wsoutlaw873311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

@ butterfly the souls games had a huge impact. Just search all the games that devs were influenced by the souls games. It doesn't need to look like the game (lotf) to be influenced by it. How many games last gen looked like uncharted? There have been a ton of games that mention souls multiplayer as an influence for their games. The drop in multiplayer and messages was unique. I don't get the people that call it niche all the time ds2 sold like 2 million in a couple of weeks. if that's niche then most game must be very niche. Of course they arent for everyone but what game is. Their difficulty is way over blown because anyone can beat it, it just takes patience and maybe a little bit of help.

Jayjayff3312d ago

Never played the soul series, nor am I familiar with the genre but you guys are kinda making me want to buy this game.
I just don't know if I would appreciate the game for what it's trying to accomplish.

Tex1173312d ago

Hard to know if it will click with you before trying it.

IMO, its worth the 60 bucks just to see if the game is for you. Because if it is...it will be one of the best gaming experiences ever.

I'd gladly pay 200 bucks for stuff like this.

jznrpg3311d ago

If you do end up enjoying Bloodborne, it is worth much more than 60$

MysticStrummer3311d ago

You could probably find Demon's Souls or Dark Souls 1 pretty cheap and see what you think. They aren't exactly the same but you'd get the idea. Those are my two favorite games from last generation.

UltraNova3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

@Tex117 &jznrpg

Jesus Christ guys ok we get it you like the game I know I like the game, hell we all like the game but don't go out saying stuff like that!!

What if Activision or EA read that and went "Hmm maybe we should charge 200 bucks for really good games since people are willing to fork that amount!!!"

I had to swallow my pride and buy the only available equipment from the little ghoul in Hunter's Dream for a bit more defence. It definitely helps!

Ozmoses3312d ago (Edited 3312d ago )

you can bypass the wolves on the bridge and come out on the otherside or better yet my personal favorite; you can trap the wolves in the stairwell that goes into the library type building that has enemies inside.. not to far from I believe the central yharnam lantern

I'm stuck in between I guess it would be boss 3 and 4... I can fight either one whenever just need to level up a little more.

I've fought the one Vicar one time so far and the other one BS-B a few times (maybe 5)

kraenk123311d ago

Never attack more than one enemy at once. Lure one of them away with a stone throw.

wsoutlaw873311d ago

Ya they designed a way around them if you explore. In souls and bloodborne if something seems unfairly impossible, it's probably by design and look for another way. There are tons of shortcuts and other areas to discover in that area. Also never just run in and attack 2 enemies lure one out and kick its ass. Divide and conquer lol.

TheDrunkenJester3311d ago

smolinsk3312d ago (Edited 3312d ago )

Not me, The games looks so boring, arcady and hack and slash like. but hey not everyone like the same things in life, just do not understand the hype for this game? anyone care to explain to me what is so great and special about this game?

SpinalRemains1383312d ago (Edited 3312d ago )

No its not hack and slash.

Bayonetta, Castlevania, DMC and God of War are Hack and Slash. Press X repeatedly to win.

Souls and Bloodborne are not.

Of you try to do that, you will lose, and lose, and never win.

This game is nothing even remotely resembling hack N slash. You may use an edged weapon, but the similarity ends there.

huckle3312d ago

arcady? How on earth does it look arcady? I am interested to know.

christian hour3312d ago (Edited 3312d ago )

"but hey not everyone like the same things in life"

"do not understand the hype for this game"

The first part of your sentence should answer that last part. For people who are in to these types of games, it has raised the bar for the genre.

I had a similar remark from a friend who doesn't like 3rd person games (primarily a cod/FPS and Fifa player) 2 years ago.

"I just don't understand the hype of TLOU, I get people have different tastes but its just another 3rd person cover shooter with zombies. Big whup".

Not an exact quote but it was along those lines...

Is ignorance really bliss? I often wonder.

And as others have pointed out, its not a hack and slash, anyone going in and playing that way is not going to get far either.

scientificreasoning3312d ago

?? It is nothing like that, you clearly are speaking from ignorance and HTF does it look boring? Incredibly tight mechanics, incredible design world design, amosphere...... Arcadey is the last word to describe it as is boring. The reviews are high for a reason.

Der_Kommandant3312d ago

I consider the Souls games to be more survival horror than RPG.

THC CELL3312d ago (Edited 3312d ago )

SpinalRemains138 I'm shocked you are not getting slated for basically calling God of war a button mashing game and God of War has a lot of depth to it's combat, unlike a traditional, repetitive H&S.

Whirlwind_Fanfare_083311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

@smolinsk
‘Anyone care to explain to me what is so great and
special about this game?'

Even if somebody did, you still wouldn't understand it, and i'm not gonna waste my time on you to explain it since you think it looks so boring and arcady and hack and slash like. Judging from your disagrees, why would anybody want to?

alvgamin4lif3311d ago

"...boring, arcady and hack and slash like."
Hahaha someone please kill me now. Hacking and slashing won't take you very far in this game.

DanteVFenris6663311d ago

Just for people above ripping on hack and slash games. Yes the movie licensed hack and slash suck as well as the low budget one. But it is in no way a bad genre and in fact one of my favourite. God of war, devil may cry are excellent games that are very fast and take quick on the spot thinking and combos to do well.

On a side note bloodborne does not have the speed of hack and slash games so it isn't one. However bloodborne does seem like it has a tad influxes from dmc with the low damage guns and more priority of evasive combat. However it just seems like it has a tad not enough to be called hack and slash. Though I probably would call it a survival hack and slash. That terms seems appropriate unless anyone has a better term to define the genre.

The 7 Best Souls-Like Games - Mastering the Challenge

The Souls-like genre remains popular, along with FromSoftware's classics there are many contenders. But which are the best Souls-like games?

toxic-inferno18d ago

Hmm... In my opinion, the 7 best are the 6 made by FromSoftware (DeS, DS1, DS2, DS3, BB and ER), then Lies of P. But each to their own.

kevco3318d ago

Still DS1? You don't feel it's been surpassed yet?

Demon's Souls has the remake of course, but DS1 has surely been outdated?

Smellsforfree17d ago

I think that the DS1 remake is better looking than DS2. The interior lighting matched with the low resolution textures in DS2 is very garish, IMO.

Besides graphics, what do you mean by DS1 being "outdated"? I'm someone who played through Elden Ring and just recently played through the DS series, and as far as gameplay went, there were all very similar.

Cacabunga17d ago

I haven’t played many but Bloodborne and NIOH1 are on top of my list.. had a blast with these 2

toxic-inferno17d ago

For world design and interconnectedness (that's a word, right?) DS1 is yet to be beaten.

9 Years Later, Does Bloodborne Deserve All The Praise It Gets?

jznrpg19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Yes, yes it does. It’s still a great game. Elden Ring isn’t better just different and a bit easier . I like that you have to be aggressive but smart in Bloodborne

thorstein19d ago

I literally replayed it recently and it's better than I remember. I think it's like going back to a beloved book and noticing things I hadn't before.

raWfodog19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Yo! I was getting ready to reply with the exact same four words you started with lol. Yes, I think Bloodborne has withstood the test of time and remains a great game. That’s why all the fans are hoping for a sequel someday. Hoping that we can catch that magic again with a new storyline.

Leeroyw19d ago

Yes. Just replayed it a few days ago. My first Platinum. And yes. I rage quitted so many times and called it BS too when I started. It's tight. The combat is amazing and the lore is rich.

GamingSinceForever19d ago

Elden Ring was easier? I don’t know about that at all. I remember leveling up in Bloodborne and breezing through it. In Elden Ring no matter how powerful I got I was still catching a beat down from every boss.

thorstein19d ago

That's due to scaling enemies. I remember not doing Haligtree untill near the end and having enemies withstand almost a full blast from Azur's Glintstone Staff Comet Azure. My level was quite high.

Melee characters are not fun in that game, especially for the Elden Beast.

Bloodborne's Potential Remaster Continues To Be Sony's Biggest Missed Opportunity

"Sony is missing out on a hugely profitable opportunity by ignoring fan demands for a Bloodborne remaster and PC port," says Ahmed from eXputer.

thorstein48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Bloodborne came out on the PS4. It is owned by From Software. What missed opportunity? I am sure the people at From Software know what they are doing. Especially since they are hiring devs instead of laying them off.

Maybe do an article about that instead of writing a hit piece on them acting like they don't know how to run their business.

48d ago
-Foxtrot47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

To be fair Hidetaka Miyazaki said in an interview

“Unfortunately, and I’ve said this in other interviews, it’s not in my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically. We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware.”

So the ball kind of is in Sonys court, it feels like a missed opportunity because it’s something people really want and Sony just hasn’t really been bothered to get it off the ground. There was rumours it was at one point but it all went silent.

Cacabunga46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Sony has been missing nothing but opportunities for a few years now.. since GOW release, it’s worrying silence we’ve been getting..

As for Bloodborne, imo it would be too soon to release it because PS4 game still looks phenomenal..

Bloodborne REMAKE I think will be PS6 launch title by Bluepoint. I truly hope so! 2 gens later we can get the same wow effect as Demons Souls.

Eonjay46d ago

He is right because it is Sonys IP but a little further back he also explained that they only work on one game at a time. This means that From must also be available. In other words it could already be in the pipeline. Ecen if that is the case, it's still up to Sony to reveal it when they are ready. As ever, I prefer not to hear about it until it's about 3 to 6 months from releasing.

CrashMania47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

'Bloodborne came out on the PS4. It is owned by From Software'

Actually Sony owns the IP, same with Demon's Souls. I think they'd prefer if From did the work on any future of both of those though, but if Sony wanted to they could have those off to anyone else to work on them, like the DS remake.

thorstein47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Yeah. Thanks for the info.

But I still think that remasters should wait a generation. And Blue Point did Demon's Souls which was superb.

It can be a huge risk. And I think Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted that it would be a PS6 title. I don't he has no say in what happens, it's a partnership.

--Onilink--46d ago

To be honest, if there is a remake/remaster (not that it needs one) I would prefer someone else to handle it, like they did with Demon Souls

From many perspectives From Soft is an amazing developer, BUT, on a technical level they are far from impressive, both in terms of dated visuals (again, on a technical level, not art/design) and usually poor performance.

And what is the point of a remake/remaster if not to provide a visual and performance enhancement to a game that already nailed the rest?

Michiel198946d ago

@thorstein what huge risk? Part of one of the most well known ip's in gaming nowadays, there's not much risk there when it comes to a remake.

thorstein46d ago

@Michiel

I meant remasters in general are a huge risk, not Bloodborne.

Bloodborne isn't, but I think it's going to be on PS6, like how Demon's Souls went from PS3 to PS5.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thorstein,

Wow, your post seems angry..relax it's an opinion.

And btw, it is on Sony, they have the exclusive right to the game, on top of that, they could have easily, at bare minimum, offered an official 60fps patch, with a few extras and charged people $10 to upgrade or $30-40 for new buyers.

I believe I saw an interview where , FromSoft said it was all up to Sony on a sequel and other dealing with the game.

A "hit peice", that serious huh?..relax lol.
